Call for Manuscripts: Play, Games, and Sociality G.H. Mead discussed his well-known versions of play and the game in the context of development, as necessary activities regarding the pragmatic and empathic orientations of the self to others. However, his notion of sociality, which delves into the temporal connection between past, present, and future, is connected to the importance of emergence and novelty. Implicitly, Mead's notion of sociality accentuates the importance of play and games as processes that "break on through" the present, creating serendipitous futures and transforming stale versions of the past. In effect, play and games are neither confined to a linear development of role-taking abilities nor events that occur apart from the everyday experiential realities that make up our life courses. Rather, play and games not only become useful activities that contribute to self-awareness and awareness of others, but also serve as foundational activities connected to shared pasts, shared futures, and varieties of shared foci. Volume 67 of Studies in Symbolic Interaction, edited by Michael Katovich, invites manuscripts that explore how human interaction is initiated, maintained, and transformed through playful dynamics. By linking classical foundations with contemporary digital and physical playgrounds, this volume aims to map the evolving landscapes of modern sociality. In light of the aforementioned foci, we invite submissions that build upon the following insights contributing to our understanding of play, games, and sociality. Call for Manuscripts: Symbolic Interaction and Migrants Many countries have created and adopted policies that close their doors to asylum seekers and migrants. Far right electoral gains In European countries, for instance, have created the political climates capitalizing on fear and anxiety. In the U.S., large-scale community raids and sweeps in "sanctuary cities" rapidly accelerated shortly after President Trump's January 2025 inauguration. Large-scale ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids occurred across multiple U.S. regions, targeting both worksites and residential communities. The raids included a widespread campaign, named Operation Metro Surge, that deployed over 3,000 agents entering into established refugee communities in Minneapolis. This Operation drew national attention when ICE agents shot and killed two individuals, and spurred protests across the country. Civil Rights activists also criticized ICE for engaging in discriminatory practices, including racial profiling. Activists emphasizing constitutional rights also expressed concerns regarding the absence of due process. Religious leaders have stood in stark contrast against the hard-lined crackdown of migrants in the U.S. Across the country, citizens aligned themselves with the stance of the religious leaders, forming grassroots organizations to aid migrants. Despite the criticism from the religious leaders and the grassroots oppositions from volunteer groups across the U.S., the U.S. Senate recently passed a $70 billion bill to fund President Trump's immigration crackdown in support of the Trump administration's dogmatic immigration stance. This stark contrast regarding opinions on migrants will, in all probability, continue throughout the remaining years of Trump's administration. Given the fact that opinions on immigration in the U.S. as well as in other countries share similar polarizing debates, Volume 66 of Studies in Symbolic Interaction provides a spotlight on the contrast between legal, civil, and religious claims and a political party's opposition to such claims. However, these same technologies have also enabled the widespread dissemination and amplification of abusive and harmful content, such as hate speech, harassment, and misinformation. Given the sheer volume of content shared online, addressing abuse and harm at scale requires the use of computational tools. Yet, detecting and moderating online abuse remains a complex task, fraught with technical, social, legal, and ethical challenges. The 10th Workshop on Online Abuse and Harms (WOAH) invites paper submissions from a diverse range of fields, including but not limited to natural language processing, machine learning, computational social science, law, political science, psychology, sociology, and cultural studies. We explicitly encourage interdisciplinary research, technical and non-technical contributions, and submissions that focus on under-resourced languages. Non-archival papers and civil society reports are also welcome. Topics covered by WOAH include, but are not limited to: * New models or methods for detecting abusive and harmful online content, including misinformation; * Biases and limitations in existing detection models or datasets for abusive and harmful content, especially those in commercial use; * Development of new datasets and taxonomies for online abuse and harms; * Novel evaluation metrics and procedures for detecting harmful content; * Analyses of the dynamics of online abuse, its propagation, and its impact on different communities; * Social, legal, and ethical considerations in detecting, monitoring, and moderating online abuse. Special Theme: ?Ten Years of WOAH: Reflecting on Progress and New Frontiers? In its 10th edition, WOAH highlights the theme ?Ten Years of WOAH: Reflecting on Progress and New Frontiers?. Over the past decade, WOAH has become a central interdisciplinary venue for online harms research. As harms and enabling technologies have evolved, the field has moved beyond an early focus on textual hate speech and harassment to address more complex phenomena. Advances in AI and online ecosystems have expanded the scale and diversity of harms. Transformer models, multimodal platforms, and recommendation systems have contributed to the escalation of issues like misinformation, radicalisation, child sexual exploitation, identity-based abuse, algorithmic bias, privacy violations, and AI-mediated harms. Methods tackling this have evolved from monolingual lexicon-based approaches to deep learning, multilinguality, multimodality, interpretability, and interdisciplinarity. Despite this progress, fundamental challenges remain. There is limited consensus on what constitutes ?harm?, how context and thresholds should be defined, or how harms vary across cultures and modalities. These ambiguities affect datasets and models, constrain comparability, and often marginalise affected communities. The past decade also calls for critical self-reflection. Research has frequently prioritised detection, high-resource languages, and narrowly defined phenomena over intervention, global perspectives, and systemic or structural harms, with insufficient attention to user agency, platform incentives, lived experience, and participatory approaches. Finally, ten years of work have underscored that interdisciplinarity is essential for addressing the sociotechnical nature of the phenomenon. Addressing future online harms will require deeper integration across NLP, ML, social sciences, law, policy, and HCI. WOAH 10 seeks to consolidate lessons from the past decade, identify enduring gaps, and connect research, practice, and policy to guide the next generation of work on online harms. Participating in the conference would give a chance to meet and discuss with a wide selection of researchers and other industry experts in the area. Topics of Interest Topics of interest include development, analysis methods and models throughout the software development lifecycle, from an industrial and practitioner-oriented perspective. Ask yourself this: Is the work grounded in real-world systems, operational experience, or industrial practice, and does it address reliability or dependability concerns? Use cases, practical experiences, lessons learned, improvement programs in reliability or dependability. ? Foundations of reliability and dependability, including process, technology, methods, metrics and lessons learned. ? Design for reliability or dependability, failure and incident case studies, including experiences in security, testing, verification, and related practices in the field. ? Reliability in AI-driven and autonomic systems or AI techniques used for Reliability Engineering. ? Software reliability in any system domain. ? Trustworthiness, security, and Responsible Software Engineering. ? Human-centric focus on reliability and dependability. ? Adoption of reliability standards, measurements and similar experiences. We look for papers with good evaluation, honest data, new insights and practical experiences that can be used to help others. We also encourage submissions reporting negative results, unexpected outcomes, and lessons learned from real-world practice. Submission Guidelines and Instructions We invite three kinds of submissions to the Industry Track: ? Enlightening Talk or Tool Demo: 1-2 page abstract (OR a Power Point presentation OR a video for a tool demo). ? Short paper: 4-pages (including references). ? Full paper: 6-pages (including references). All the submissions will be reviewed by members of the Industry Track Program Committee. Accepted papers (with an abstract) will be included in the ISSRE Supplemental Proceedings and submitted for publication to IEEE Xplore. Papers are submitted via Easy Chair https://easychair.org/conferences?conf=issre2026 . Submissions must adhere to the IEEE Computer Society Format Guidelines (for more Information, please refer to the relevant part on the conference website: https://cyprusconferences.org/issre2026/industry-track/) Note that: ? A paper must include the title, the name and affiliation of each author, an abstract of up to 150 words, and up to 4 keywords. Thus, submissions are not anonymous. ? Reviewers will use the abstract during the bidding process for peer-review. Thus, the abstract should state the paper goals clearly, along with the means used to achieve them. ? The first page is not a separate page, but is a part of the paper (i.e., it has technical material in it). Thus, this page counts toward the total page budget for the paper. ? Symbols and labels used in the graphs should be readable as printed, without requiring on-screen magnification. ? Limit the file size to less than 15 MB (for Video?s ? provide a live link). Papers that exceed the page limits specified, on topics not in the scope of ISSRE, or that do not follow the formatting guidelines will be rejected without review. Authors of accepted papers will have the chance to present their work at ISSRE 2026. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register for the conference and to give the talk, if the paper is accepted. Best Paper Awards The Industry Program Chair will select three candidates among top-ranked papers presenting and motivating novel and disruptive ideas that address problems relevant for industry. Selection will be based on the reviewers? feedback, novelty and potential impact of the results. The final selection of the best paper will be done by the audience attending the presentation of the candidate papers. Self-Expression, Self-Actualization, and Media Experimentation (SESAME): A Dialogue and Ruminations A symposium at the ASIS&T 2026 Annual Meeting (Bangkok, Thailand) ( https://www.asist.org/am2026/am26/) Sponsors: U.S. West Chapter, SIG-USE Website: https://sesame-asist.github.io/ Background Social media platforms provide opportunities for people to connect not only with others, but also with themselves. Posting to and engaging with social media can be viewed as a form of active self-making - through content creation and content feed curation, people can form better understandings of themselves by constructing and exploring different realities (Takahashi, 2010). In online spaces, the interactions that contribute to identity and personality development are hyper-responsive and hyper-mediated: social feedback is nearly instantaneous and can be amplified by the platform itself, becoming a form of currency that is used, whether consciously or subconsciously, as a component of self-reflective identity formation processes. However, there is tremendous diversity in how people interact with and engage in self-expression using digital media. Some might use video or images, such as creating TikToks or uploading to Instagram; others may vent their frustrations or engage in discussions via text-based media, like Reddit. Some may share stories of health challenges (Chen, 2016; Lundy, 2024), while others focus on professional or personal self-representation (Van Dijck, 2013). Still others see social media as ?civic laboratories? for political expression (Lane et al., 2019). Not all of us produce visible traces of ourselves online; for example, there are yet others who receive and consume information through these social networks and use it to inform their own experiences, perspectives, and understandings of themselves. What stories do we all have to tell? In this symposium, we invite everyone to contribute to a collective exploration of self-making and communication through different forms of media. Relevant considerations include: - How do people express themselves online and contribute to their own online experiences? To what extent do these forms of self-expression change over time? - What are the processes that underlie identity formation and development in online spaces? To what extent are they iterative, dynamic, or even static? - How does the structure and design of social media platforms mediate self-expression online? How have these platform-mediated venues and self-reflective processes changed over time? - What can we gather from the self-expressive content and interactions on social media platforms (e.g. genuine expressions of self vs. formatted, algorithm-minded content vs. reposts/remakes of other users? content)? - What might the future of self-expression online look like, given the general motivations and direction of social media platforms? How do these motivations aid or hinder users in relation to self-expression? - What are the important considerations for information and library science professionals as these platforms evolve? How can information- and behavioral frameworks inform our understanding? About the Symposium & Pre-Symposium Participatory Experience This symposium is an in-person event co-located at the ASIS&T 2026 annual meeting. We seek to bring together researchers, practitioners, and students interested in exploring the intersection of media and self-expression, aiming to welcome a diverse audience of experiences, perspectives and disciplines. No technical expertise or prior formalized experience with research is required. Additionally, we encourage interested attendees to engage in a participatory experience in the timeframe leading up to the workshop, where they will have an opportunity to create their own social media content as a way to engage with self-expressive and self-reflective processes firsthand. This symposium strives to be a venue to discuss existing as well as new work/creations, and foster a collective dialogue. Call for Participation We will accept three different types of submissions. Attendees may also participate in the workshop without engaging in Options A to C below. - Option A (?Demo?): Submit content of your own reflecting Self-Expression, Self-Actualization, and Media Experimentation (SESAME)! If you do not already have content in mind that you want to submit, you can engage in the pre-symposium content creation experience. - Option B (?Reflection?): Submit a summary, introduction, and/or a reflection on your SESAME content creation experiences.
