Dear Colleagues, I am thrilled to announce that Rice University's anthropology department is hiring an anthropologist of AI. Please circulate this ad to anyone who might be appropriate. The Department of Anthropology at Rice University (Houston, Texas), invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin July 1, 2027. We seek a cultural anthropologist whose research examines artificial intelligence as a social, cultural, political, ethical, and material issue, and who contributes to ongoing interdisciplinary conversations about the societal implications of algorithmic systems, data infrastructures, and automation writ large. This position is part of a cluster hire initiative across the university focused on the responsible use and development of AI. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research agendas examine the impact and intersection of AI with medical anthropology, disability studies, environmental impacts, surveillance studies, communication, media and semiotics, design anthropology, and anthropology of work but will also consider other research agendas focused on the broader social implications of AI. The geographical area of focus is open and should complement the department’s existing faculty expertise. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses. Candidates must currently have a Ph.D. or complete the Ph.D. by July 1, 2027. The application deadline is October 15, 2026. Digital Intersectionality & Marginalization in the Majority World - Journal of Online Trust & Safety Special Issue

We are excited to announce the release of the Journal of Online Trust and Safety <https://tsjournal.org/index.php/jots> Special Issue: Digital Intersectionality & Marginalization in the Majority World <https://tsjournal.org/index.php/jots/issue/view/12>. Although the Global Majority makes up most of the world's online population, the governing harm frameworks, benchmarks, oversight mechanisms, and tools were developed elsewhere with different users in mind. This structural marginalization persists across three distinct levels: the infrastructure that was never tailored to Majority World communities, the governance structures that fail to validate or account for local experiences of harm, and academic environments that present hurdles for in-region scholars striving to share their research. Equally critical is the role of intersectionality. Online risks and harms for Majority World populations rarely stem from a single source; instead, they compound across gender, language, political setting, and geography. At the same time, the field must navigate another dimension of intersectionality—the divide in data, resources, and knowledge separating academia from industry—a gap this Journal is explicitly attempting to address. Organized into three main clusters, the eight papers in this issue highlight how digital safety systems break down across these structural levels when designed around specific language demographics, user profiles, and threat models. The project advances the political economy of neurotechnology and brain-computer interfaces from a global comparative perspective, with a focus on Europe, the US, and China. Regenerating Approaches for Qualitative Research in the Age of Artificial Intelligence Organized by: Andrea Guzman (Northern Illinois University), Miriam Sweeney (University of Alabama), Payal Arora (Utrecht University), Stefanie Duguay (Concordia University), Sarah Florini (Arizona State University), Daniela Jaramillo Dent (University of Zurich), Catherine Knight Steele (University of Maryland) This workshop examines the methodological opportunities and challenges of qualitative approaches to studying artificial intelligence, defined broadly to include generative AI, voice assistants, artificial companions, smart devices, predictive technologies, and recommendation systems. It focuses mainly on AI as a research subject, while also addressing AI as a tool in qualitative inquiry. Facilitators will share their expertise, then attendees will discuss questions from their own research in small groups before the group identifies key considerations for qualitative AI research. The session highlights approaches that challenge dominant epistemologies, including qualitative methodologies from the Global South. Technology and Dependency: A Glossary for the Twenty-First Century Organized by: Luciana Musello (Universidad San Francisco de Quito), Juan Ortíz-Freuler (University of Southern California), Guilherme Cavalcante Silva (York University), Agustín Ferrari Braun (University of Amsterdam), Miriam Millán (Centro de Cultura Digital), Raúl Zambrano (Independent Researcher) This workshop revisits the work of Latin American dependency theorists and reinterprets their ideas about unequal development in light of current technological transformations. Proposed by the "Dependency Theory and Techno-Imperialism" study group of the Non-Aligned Tech Movement (NATM), it surveys key concepts from the dependency literature and evaluates their relevance to contemporary technological dependency. After a 15-minute introduction, participants break into discussion groups, each working from a pre-selected excerpt and building a conceptual map through a collage activity (about 90 minutes), followed by a 45-minute closing plenary. The aim is to produce a first draft of The Dependency Theory Glossary for the Twenty-First Century and to establish a Dependency Theory Network. Open to all backgrounds; of particular interest to those working on digital sovereignty, political economy, internet governance, and infrastructure studies. Maximum 25 participants across 5 groups. Wednesday, 1:00–4:00 pm PC0004. Women* in AI Research: A Critical Data Sprint Organized by: The Women* in AI, Humanities, and Social Sciences (WAIHSS). Facilitated by: Nadja Schaetz (University of Hamburg), Vasilisa Kuznetsova (University of Bremen) This half-day workshop turns critical AI inquiry inward, asking how AI research itself is structured by gendered patterns of representation and recognition across citation, funding, and public discourse. It draws on Critical AI Studies and on evidence of persistent inequalities in academic knowledge production: a stalling publishing gender gap, women's work cited less often even when they publish more, and female scholars less often heard as expert voices in public. Participants work in groups on one of three foci — authorship and citation, research funding, or public recognition — in an exploratory data sprint using pre-prepared datasets and visualization tools, with no advanced technical skills required. A 30-minute synthesis closes the session, and outputs feed a paper and a follow-up wikithon aimed at reconfiguring gender imbalances in public knowledge infrastructures. Capped at 24 participants. WAIHSS uses self-identification as a guiding principle and welcomes trans women and non-binary individuals who feel aligned with its mission.. PC0005. Researching Search: Conceptual and Methodological Approaches to the Study of Online Search Practices and Systems Organized by: Axel Bruns (Queensland University of Technology), Kateryna Kasianenko (Queensland University of Technology), Victoria Vziatysheva (The University of Bern), Mykola Makhortykh (The University of Bern). Additional organizers: Ashwin Nagappa (Queensland University of Technology), Daniel Angus (Queensland University of Technology) This workshop brings together conceptual and methodological perspectives on the study of search engines, which increasingly merge conventional search with conversational AI overviews and other AI modes. The first hour consists of four short opening talks sketching the state of search studies. The second hour is a set of hands-on exercises on formulating realistic, diverse search queries — simulating the information-seeking practices of distinct social groups and repurposing SEO tools (Google Trends, People Also Ask) and digital trace data from Q&A fora. Participants work in groups and present their observations, which feed into an open-ended brainstorming session in the final hour on new and alternative ways to study search across disciplines. In Defense of the Commons Organized by: Zachary McDowell (University of Illinois – Chicago), Fenwick McKelvey (Concordia University), Nathalie Casemajor (Institut national de la recherche scientifique), Matthew Vetter (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) This workshop builds capacity in the Critical Commons Research Network (CCRN), an international collective examining the sharing of digital public knowledge through infrastructural, political-economic, and policy lenses. It addresses threats to the internet commons — Wikipedia and its sister projects, open-source software, shadow libraries, and interoperable interfaces like RSS and APIs — including corporate free-riding and the extraction of volunteer labor and open data by large language models. The pre-conference opens with a mentorship workshop pairing graduate students and junior scholars with senior scholars through elevator pitches and feedback sessions, followed by five-minute lightning talks and discussion. This is the rousing inside story of their movement—and the way it spawned an anti-worker backlash now reshaping the industry. After Donald Trump’s election in 2016, the tech industry sprang into action to oppose his right-wing agenda, with workers and CEOs alike joining mass mobilizations against the new president’s anti-immigrant policies. But it wasn’t long before the tech bosses started to fall in line with the new administration. In response, tens of thousands of tech workers protested against their own employers for betraying the progressive values that once defined the industry—including organizing against military contracts, walking out to protest sexism, and even launching a wave of union drives. By the early 2020s, these workers had sparked what observers were calling the tech worker movement, one that seemed capable of checking the industry’s reckless growth and reactionary drift. But as their struggle grew, so did the employers’ backlash. A new class consciousness took root among tech's billionaire owners. Hell-bent on stamping out any and all dissent, tech executives embraced Trumpism, fired organizers, and began lashing out against the “woke” ideology they blamed for turning their once loyal employees against them—and replacing the good tech jobs of the 2010s with incessant layoffs, grind culture, and a management style that treats workers as disposable. To date much of the attention to research with LLMs has been in the service of supporting or even supplanting existing methodological instrumentaria. In earlier discourse, these substitutive means would have been called the virtualisation of methods, referring to their emulation in a new realm. Whether working with LLMs, chatbots or agents, the question has been how (well) they can do our analytical work the way we usually do it. There are core analytical tasks AI is asked to perform. Can they annotate and classify data sets, extracting overt as well as latent meanings, narratives and discourses? Can they affirm or find fault with findings made by more standard qualitative and quantitative means? Can they synthesise data to a degree that it more or less mimics real-world material? Can they produce reference lists on a subject matter? But there is also some work that strives to repurpose their intended use, plumbing the vector space for social structures and cultural trends. For example, can their biases be studied as societal indicators? Can they show extant and emerging social and cultural associations? This webinar treats AI governance as a political and cultural question rather than a technical one: who sets the rules, whose values are encoded in them, and what accountability is possible when systems operate across borders and communities. Drawing on applied ethics, media and communication studies, and labor-centered approaches to AI policy, the conversation traces how regulation is shaped from above, through legislation, industry self-governance, and international bodies, and contested from below, through worker organizing, civil society advocacy, and grassroots demands for digital sovereignty. Moderated by John Wihbey, the session brings researchers into dialogue with each other and the audience around the tensions, possibilities, and stakes of governing AI as a medium of social and political life.
