Online Convening: LLMs are the Third Wave of Automated Content Moderation

Hello AoIR colleagues (with apologies for cross-posting), I’m writing to invite you to Penn MEDIATED’s online convening, LLMs are the Third Wave of Automated Content Moderation. You can see the overview, agenda, and speaker lineup below—it has researchers (including own affiliated faculty Yphtach Lelkes and Danaé Metaxa) and technologists who will examine how LLMs are changing online platform’s content moderation, how they compare to prior automated systems, and what the emerging research in this space tells us. We’ll also hear from practitioners building a new ecosystem of custom LLM-based moderation systems. LLMs are the Third Wave of Automated Content Moderation Content moderation is critical to protecting users against harmful and illegal online content, although it may also restrict free expression. Over the past two decades, platforms have increasingly turned to automation to perform content moderation at scale. First through hashing algorithms and later through predictive machine learning methods, many large platforms have automated over 90% of content moderation actions. Today, online platforms are increasingly exploring using large language models (LLMs), as a new component of the content moderation technology stack. With online platforms conducting mass layoffs of trust and safety teams, while also increasing investments in their AI development, this convening will explore how LLMs fit in the content moderation landscape and what that means for platforms, policymakers, and users. This convening brings together researchers, technologists, and practitioners to examine what this third wave of automated content moderation means in practice. We will explore how LLMs are being deployed by platforms today, how they compare to prior automated systems, and what the emerging research in this space tells us. We will hear from experts who are building their own custom systems using LLMs for content moderation and researchers who study their implications for information integrity. The conversation will also examine the policy environment shaping adoption: regulatory frameworks in the EU, Brazil and India, are setting new expectations for the speed and transparency of content moderation decisions, incentivizing further automation by online platforms. We will share a pre-read working paper on this topic in advance of this event. XSifter - Open for Academic X Research and Teaching

Limited but reliable and legal academic access to X data from the previous 30 days is available via XSifter. For now, the USD pricing model is: - $100 to license the first 5,000 posts and take a free training session. - $15/1,000 to license additional posts for academics or non-profits. - $25/1,000 to license additional posts for commercial users. - 5% discount if you license 100,000 posts or 10% if you license 500,000. - For now, there is a relatively low monthly quota for the XSifter application as a whole. - Query testing and refinement currently requires a free full serve meeting. - The X data is stored and analyzed in DiscoverText, where you can collaborate with unlimited peers for free. - The phrase "replicate, replicate, replicate" was popularized by political scientists Gary King, Robert O. Keohane, and Sidney Verba (often abbreviated as KKV). It emphasizes that scientific transparency, open data, and the ability to reproduce research findings are the ultimate safeguards of scientific validity in social science. Per the KKV maxim "replicate, replicate, replicate," this is an X-compliant replication platform. Other academics can replicate your study without need to "rehydrate" and datasets can be used in the classroom for teaching a variety of methods. Deleted, suspended, and protected posts are not displayed. - While data downloads are not permitted, graphml files for network visualization can be generated. - There are some interesting new metadata fields supplied by X, such as public metrics bookmark count and public metrics impression count. - We append certain hybrid metadata fields for filtering. One is the number of followers per day a user has acquired over the life of the account. Filtering for accounts that acquire 100+ followers a day always unearths something interesting about X affordances. - Self-serve access with free microsampling and AI-assisted query refinement is 2-3 weeks away. - The most recent experiment (keyword: data centers) yielded just under 17,000 posts (excluding retweets) from the last 14 days. New book: The Danmei Culture in Chinese Media and Society (Authored by Tingting Hu and Liang Ge)

Dear colleagues and friends, I’m very pleased to share the publication of a new book that Tingting Hu and I have co-authored, **The Danmei Culture in Chinese Media and Society: Male-Male Romance, Resistance and Representation<https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003705741>**, published by Routledge as part of its Transmedia series. The book grows out of our long-standing research on Chinese danmei (boys love) culture and asks what this cultural formation can tell us about gender, sexuality, media industries, fandom, and cultural governance in contemporary China and East Asia. Rather than approaching danmei simply as a literary genre or asking whether it should be understood as inherently feminist, queer, misogynistic, or homophobic, we treat it as a historically evolving and internally contradictory cultural ecology. We trace its development from the late 1990s onwards, from online fiction and reader communities to web dramas, audio dramas, manga and animation. Across these different media forms, we are particularly interested in the uneven relations among women’s and queer desires, commercial adaptation, platform capitalism, fandom practices, and state regulation. One of the book’s central arguments is that danmei can be understood as 'a vital yet ambivalent counterpublic': a cultural space capable of unsettling dominant heteronormative and gendered scripts, while remaining vulnerable to commercial incorporation, ideological neutralisation, and its own exclusions and contradictions. We also develop the idea of a 'fractured transmedia system' to describe what happens when queer narratives move across media under conditions of censorship: official adaptations frequently erase or displace queer intimacy, while fans undertake forms of narrative and affective repair across platforms. Empirically, the book draws on several years of immersive digital ethnography, alongside survey research and extensive interviews with readers, fans and cultural producers. We write throughout from the position of aca-fans, taking seriously both the analytical possibilities and reflexive complications of studying a cultural world in which we have ourselves participated. Although the book is grounded in the Chinese context, we hope it will speak more broadly to conversations in media and cultural sociology, gender and sexuality studies, queer studies, fan studies, digital culture, and East Asian popular culture—especially debates about how intimate and political possibilities are made, constrained, commodified and repaired through popular media. Dear Friends, The Technology, Internet, and Policy Group (TIP) [https://psatip.uk] and the Media and Politics Group at the Political Studies Association invite you to participate at our latest workshop titled ‘Growing Up Digital: Young People & Technology’. It’s a pivotal moment for in the regulation of young people's technology use, with social media bans already implemented, and recent consultations in the United Kingdom on what actions the government should take to protect young people online. In a direct response to this, we are hosting a workshop develop a shared understanding of the current evidence base and to build the cross-sector relationships and to bring experts together to build the cross-sector relationships is something which is deeply needed. Second Call for Papers: ‘Age-appropriate design of online platforms: questions for EU law and children’s rights’

** Second Call for Papers: ‘Age-appropriate design of online platforms: questions for EU law and children’s rights’ ** -- Sharing this for a second time now that the academic year has started -- Governments and parents throughout Europe are demanding that minors are better protected when they go online. So far, much of the debate has concentrated on social media age limits. France has adopted statutory social media age restrictions. Similar efforts are being made in other European countries. There is also increasing political pressure on the EU to take action. In response to that, the European Commission established a panel of experts to advise on child safety online. After the co-chairs of the panel presented their final report in July 2026, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her support for ‘phased and gradual access for different age ranges’. When it comes to protecting minors online, social media age limits are just one possible solution to a complex and broad problem. First, the problem is broader than social media, as online games and AI chatbots present similar risks to social media, including exposure to harmful content, manipulation, grooming, and problematic or addicted use. Second, social media age limits presume there is a single ‘right’ age to start using these services, whereas a children’s rights perspective requires age-appropriate design of online services that respects children’s evolving capacities. The final report of the co-chairs of the special panel acknowledges these issues. It speaks of ‘social media+’ instead of just social media and calls for ‘age-appropriate regulation’ of such services, which signals the policy debate may be moving beyond simple age limits. Age-appropriate design of online services raises many questions on the intersection of children’s rights and EU law. For instance, what is the role of EU platform regulation and data protection law in ensuring age-appropriate design of social media, online games, and AI chatbots? Furthermore, how do different solutions to ensure age-appropriate design relate to children’s human rights? For example, if countries implement statutory age limits of 16 years for social media, then is the interference this poses with children’s right to freedom of expression justified in light of its aim? Another question is to what extent the EU has competence to legislate EU-wide design or access requirements for online services used by minors. At the same time, it can be asked how social media age limits and other solutions at the national-legal level relate to the Digital Services Act’s fully harmonised regime. It is also an open question which services should be addressed in protecting children online, and how the targeted services should be defined. The fast developments around social media age limits and the protection of minors online necessitate critical reflection from different legal perspectives. It is crucial that the discussion does not narrow itself to statutory age limits as the only solution available to EU and national lawmakers, and that the interaction between children’s rights and EU law is sufficiently considered. Therefore, we are organising a workshop to bring together scholars working on the protection of minors online, from the perspective of either children’s rights or EU law. The goal of the workshop is to bring together these different perspectives and explore how children’s rights should inform the implementation of existing EU laws (platform regulation, data protection, media regulation) and possible new legal solutions, including social media age limits. ** Submissions ** Are you interested in presenting your work during this workshop? Please also include a short biography of up to 150 words in your submission. We specifically welcome work in progress so that authors can benefit from the wide range of views we aim to bring together. [AoIR HQ] Call for 2027 Flashpoint Symposium Proposals

The Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) is seeking proposals for one-or two-day AoIR Flashpoint Symposia to take place before the end of August 2027. As the 2027 AoIR conference takes place in Rimini, Italy, a preference is given to proposals for locations outside of Europe and North- America. An AoIR Flashpoint Symposium is a small event that provides an opportunity to deepen or foster conversations about internet research among regions, groups, and/or thematic research areas that have thus far been underrepresented in the Association of Internet Researchers and its conferences. The Association is making available funding of up to US$8,000 for the purpose of supporting a maximum two-day symposium that will contribute to the life and mission of AoIR and feed into its annual conference. Each symposium will be a standalone event to take place in a region of the world that differs from that of the 2027 annual conference. Preference will be given to regions and locations where an AoIR conference has not yet been held, but where at least one active AoIR member, who will be on the Flashpoint Symposium planning committee, resides. We also require that the symposium make a contribution to the main 2027 AoIR conference in some way (e.g., a panel, pre-conference workshop, or another format that presents key contributions and outcomes from the symposium). In addition to local participants, all AoIR members are invited to attend the Flashpoint Symposium. Deadline for the submission of this proposal is 2 November 2026, with a decision returned as soon as possible. Proposals should be emailed to symposia [at] aoir [dot] org by 2 November, 2026. Proposers are invited to engage in conversation with Sarah T. Roberts (prez [at] aoir [dot] org) and Andra Siibak (vp [at] aoir [dot] org) if you have questions or anything you’d like to discuss. Proposals should: * Be no more than 1-2 pages in length. * Outline a distinct issue or theme to be addressed by the symposium. * Include a proposed date(s) (between 1 April and 31 August) and schedule for the one- or two-day event, and identify potential keynote speakers (keeping in mind AoIR’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity). Note: the proposal should ideally not suggest parallel sessions but rather envision a day of consecutive sessions (i.e. a single stream only). * Include a brief description of the leadership team’s history with AoIR and their plans for future involvement. * Demonstrate how this Flashpoint Symposium will connect with AoIR more broadly. * Include a preliminary budget that demonstrates in-kind support and/or sponsorship from the host institution(s) and creates a preliminary plan for cost items. Please note that AoIR funding is not to be allocated for the funding of participant travel costs, staff costs in support of the symposium’s organization, or indirect costs (such costs must be borne by local sponsorship), but may include keynote honoraria, travel of keynote speakers, meals, venue or labor costs. * Indicate how regional and transnational graduate students will be encouraged to participate. * Include a discussion of projected outcomes from this symposium and its potential for ongoing benefit to AoIR more broadly (e.g., AoIR conference panel, special issue, etc.). A selection of organizers and delegates should make a firm commitment to present key contributions and outcomes from the Flashpoint Symposium at the year’s annual conference AoIR’s commitment to the symposium will include: * Support for promotion and administration through our various channels and platforms (e.g. via organization social media accounts and email lists), as well as limited AoIR administrative support. * Up to $8,000 USD disbursed in the form of reimbursements and invoices to cover costs related to organizing the symposium. * Mentorship from members of AoIR Executive Committee related to the organization of the symposium and subsequent deliverables/outcomes. * Allocation of one session slot (panel, roundtable, fishbowl, experimental session, or pre-conference workshop) on the annual AoIR conference program to the symposium organizers. This session is invited and will be planned jointly by the symposium organizers, the AoIR Executive Committee, and the AoIR Conference organizers in order to present the symposium’s major themes and outcomes. It must involve several participants selected from among the organizers, keynote speakers, and/or other participants of the symposium in order to allow the symposium conversation to continue at the main annual conference. Proposals will be ranked in relation to their ability to: * Advance AoIR’s goal of diversification of membership and the expansion of geographical presence at the annual AoIR conference. * Address a theme, topic, or issue not yet prominent in AoIR’s annual conferences. * Demonstrate a commitment to encouraging graduate student participation, particularly from those in the host region. * Demonstrate capacity for carrying out the symposium in a manner that contributes to the benefit of AoIR and the individual organizer(s). * Demonstrate a commitment to present outcomes at the annual AoIR conference. Education is continually evolving as technologies, theories, disciplines and social contexts reshape how we teach and learn. *Focus on Pedagogy 2026* explores this changing landscape across art, design, social sciences, STEM, health, media, humanities, environmental sciences and beyond. Themes include AI, studio teaching, problem-based learning, flipped classrooms, ungrading, peer learning and more. Goffman in the Open, September 18: Three OA books and a series launch

mediastudies.press invites you to join Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz and Yves Winkin for the launch of the Goffman in the Open book series. The free, one-hour onlineevent will highlight the first three books in the series: Winkin’s From Erving to Goffman: A Work in Performance? (2026), Leeds-Hurwitz’s Mapping Goffman’s Invisible College (2025), and Goffman’s 1953 dissertation, Communication Conduct in an Island Community (2026, with an introduction by Winkin)—all diamond open access. Leeds-Hurwitz and Winkin will speak about the backstories of their books, with Winkin adding details about his visit to Unst, the Scottish island-siteof Goffman’s dissertation fieldwork. Tenure-Track position in AI policy and governance at Bowdoin College

Assistant Professor of Government and Legal Studies - Bowdoin College - Public Policy and Regulation of AI Bowdoin College’s Department of Government and Legal Studies invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment in comparative public policy or governance at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1, 2027. We seek candidates whose research involves the law or regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) or the use of AI in policy-making; comparative research across countries or policy areas is a plus. The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester across a range of offerings, including participation in the rotation of the department’s introductory course in comparative politics or international relations. Bowdoin is particularly interested in candidates dedicated to undergraduate teaching and with a promise of long-term successful research. A Ph.D. in political science or related fields is expected by the date of the appointment. Bowdoin’s Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity aims to critically examine, thoughtfully utilize, and ethically guide AI’s trajectory. A $50 million dollar gift by Reed Hastings funds ten new faculty positions – including this position – across disciplines; supports faculty in AI-related teaching, research, and creative work; sponsors workshops, symposia, and student research; and prepares the next generation of leaders to engage responsibly with the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence.
