Dear colleagues, This is a call for papers for a special issue of Communication and Change<https://link.springer.com/journal/44382> on Algorithms, AI, and Computational Communication: Frontiers in Agent-Based Research. Guest Editors: Dr. Jinhui Li, Professor, Jinan University, China Dr. Wen Shi, Associate Professor, Jinan University, China Dr. Mario Haim, Professor and Chair, LMU Munich, Germany Overview: Agent-based approaches have emerged as an important frontier in journalism and communication research. By constructing simulated entities (i.e., agents) capable of interacting within digital environments, scholars are now able to investigate algorithmic systems in ways previously unavailable through conventional surveys, experiments, or content analyses (Shi et al., 2026). These approaches commonly include both Agent-Based Testing (ABT) — which deploys simulated users to audit and measure real-world algorithmic systems (e.g., Haim, 2020; Shi & Li, 2025)— and Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) — which simulates communication dynamics within virtual environments to explore emergent social phenomena (e.g., Sohn, 2022; Waldherr & Wettstein, 2019; Zhong et al., 2023). This special issue seeks to advance empirical, methodological, and theoretical discussions surrounding agent-based approaches in journalism and communication research. We welcome empirical studies that apply ABT, ABM, and combinations of generative AI and agent-based approaches to substantive communication problems across diverse domains, including journalism studies, health communication, science communication, platform studies, or digital media research. We also welcome contributions that develop, reflect upon, or critically evaluate agent-based methods. Themes of Interest (include but are not limited to): Algorithmic systems and digital media environments * Human–algorithm interaction and feedback loops in digital environments * AI-mediated journalism, automated news production, and synthetic media ecosystems * Algorithmic bias, digital inequalities, and platform governance Communication processes and social dynamics * Communication processes, public discourse, and social interaction in digital environments * Information diffusion and networked communication dynamics * Revisiting relevant communication theories in the context of emerging media technologies Methodological developments and reflection * Methodological developments in Agent-Based Testing (ABT) and Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) * Integration of ABT, ABM, and generative AI in communication research * Ethical, epistemological, and Open Science challenges in agent-based communication research This special issue particularly welcomes empirical studies, while also inviting methodological and theoretical review papers. Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives are especially encouraged. We strongly support open science practices, including transparency in data, code, simulation design, and research materials. Although several attempts have been made to establish and study a sort of standard variability modeling language (e.g., OVM, CVL, TVL, .) there is still no consensus on a simple feature modeling language. There can be many motivations to have one but among others, there is one that is very important: information sharing among researchers, tools, or developers. Following the spirit of the previous MODEVAR workshops, this meeting plans to be a full-day, interactive event where all participants shall share knowledge about how to build up a simple feature model language that the community can agree on. Call for Proposals: ASIS&T SIG-AI Workshop "Building AI and Navigating AI Regulatory and Policy Landscapes"

The Association for Information Science and Technology Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (ASIS&T SIG-AI) is seeking proposals for the the ASIS&T Annual Meeting pre-conference workshop, "Building AI and Navigating AI Regulatory and Policy Landscapes,” which will be held on November 6, 2026 at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Riverside Hotel Bangkok, Thailand. This workshop aims to bring together researchers, practitioners, and users to examine experiences and perceptions of AI development and governance across diverse settings. It comprises (i) a hands-on training session in which participants will build and evaluate AI tools and agentic systems using both code-based and no-code approaches within the TACTIC framework, and (ii) research presentations accompanied by critical discussion of ongoing challenges and emerging research. The key question guiding this workshop is: What is the scope of AI regulations, including material (what is regulated?), personal (who is regulated?), territorial (Where do they apply?), and temporal (when do they apply?) dimensions? Who Should Submit? We encourage submissions from a wide range of voices, including scholars, practitioners, students, and first-time ASIS&T presenters. What are Proposal Requirements? An 800-word proposal (excluding references) that aligns with or builds upon the workshop's guiding questions should be submitted via the Google Form linked below. Dear AoIR colleagues, We're hiring a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Amsterdam for the Horizon Europe project ANTIGONE: From Antagonism to Agonism in Digital Ecosystems. The position focuses on “speech grey zones” — contested forms of online communication that blur the boundaries between misinformation, harmful content, political expression, and legitimate democratic disagreement. The project approaches the tension between free expression and disinformation as a broader question of how disagreement is institutionally and technologically shaped in digital environments. We're particularly interested in candidates working across internet/platform studies, digital methods, online political communication, platform governance, disinformation, digital cultures, and qualitative/computational approaches to digital media research. The CFP is intended for the academic community of internet researchers and may be of interest to members of AoIR. Call for Papers - Digital Culture & Society (DCS): The Targeting State: AI, Surveillance, and Predictive Power Vol. 12, Issue 2/2026 Following the first issue of the 12th volume of Digital Cultures & Society on Critical AI: Rethinking Intelligence, Bias, and Control (eds. Reichert & Deiß) the second issue focuses on "The Targeting State: AI, Surveillance, and Predictive Power (eds. Reichert & Hussein). In migration enforcement regimes across the Global North, AI-driven systems are increasingly institutionalized as technical-media infrastructures. Cases like the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the U.S. exemplify the convergence of large-scale policing with advanced forms of automated data processing, machine learning, generative AI, and the strategic deployment of commercially sourced datasets. This issue examines the entanglement of artificial intelligence, surveillance infrastructures, and contemporary policing, bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from critical AI studies, digital literacy, media archaeology, and political science. The contributors interrogate how algorithmic systems reconfigure the scale, scope, and operative logics of state power and conceptualize AI not merely as a tool of governance but as a constitutive element in the transformation of governmental rationalities, since AI-based policing systems are frequently trained on historically biased datasets, reproducing and intensifying racialized forms of discrimination and structural inequality. Hence, a central concern of the volume is the potential for critical interventions and media-political initiatives, exploring how practices such as counter-mapping and critical data activism might challenge or reconfigure these infrastructures of control. This issue welcomes contributions that engage questions of migration regulation, automated border enforcement, and the expansion of computational governance under contemporary capitalism. We are particularly interested in work that examines how AI systems operationalize exclusion through predictive profiling, detention infrastructures, and anticipatory policing. Authors may consider how digital bordering practices intersect with histories of colonial administration, neoliberal governance, and the management of surplus populations under global regimes of mobility control. We encourage submissions grounded in historical and digital materialism and dialectical materialist approaches that interrogate the political economy of data infrastructures and technological accumulation. How might algorithmic governance be understood not as a rupture from prior systems of domination, but as an intensification of capitalist relations through logistical optimization, extraction, and dispossession? We welcome analyses attentive to labour, class formation, platform economies, and the contradictions embedded within techno-solutionist state projects. The issue also invites engagements with abolitionist thought, Black geographies, and critical spatial theory. We are interested in scholarship that explores abolition geography as a framework for resisting predictive regimes and imagining alternative social relations beyond carceral data systems. Contributions may address the spatialization of surveillance, environmental racism, digital enclosure, and the production of calculable populations through state and corporate infrastructures. Call for Abstracts, Internatiional Scientific Conference EMERGE 2026: Contested Futures

EMERGE is an international conference and forum dedicated to exploring the social, ethical, political, environmental, and cultural implications of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. We welcome interdisciplinary contributions that critically engage with questions of technological power, governance, inequality, sustainability, media, education, and alternative futures. The conference is organized by the Digital Society Lab<https://ifdt.bg.ac.rs/digilab/?lang=en> of the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, University of Belgrade, in collaboration with the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia.
