Dear AoIR-ists, Some of us at the [1]Futures + Literacies + Methods Lab are starting a new short turnaround analysis of sociotechnical imaginaries regarding GenAI in higher education. We are seeking your help to crowdsource GenAI policy and/or guidelines documents from universities around the world to identify common trends or themes. Please contribute! Why? In an effort to respond to the evolving landscape of the use of Gen AI for knowledge-making processes, Universities are rapidly revising or developing new policies to adapt to GenAI use by students, educators, staff, and researchers. How do these documents situate and imagine AI in the context of higher education, knowledge production, and epistemic authority? You can still sign up!* Time: December 3rd, 2025 at 8pm (CET) - 3pm (Buenos Aires) - 2pm (Ottawa) - 11am (Vancouver) Location: Online Registration: https://forms.gle/ux8RFWQvYg6J9PV7A Deadline for registration: *October 19th* With this call, we invite practitioners, academics, and activists who work from and alongside Indigenous communities on digital media, most broadly conceived, to join us for an online workshop to share ideas, insights, and challenges with one another. We are non-Indigenous academics working alongside Quechua and Inuit communities in Argentina and Canada. It is our intention to create a space for forming reciprocal relationships across projects and locations. We would like to bring together people from diverse backgrounds to discuss shared concerns and interests in this field, join our forces, and raise awareness of each others’ work, positions, experiences, and uncertainties. We believe that the concerns and practices of Indigenous peoples are not well represented in current discussions about the politics of digitization, although these standpoints are needed to understand its role in how people relate to each other and the world. While big tech fastens its grip on more and more areas of everyday life, and “data colonialism” (Mejias and Couldry 2024) and a push toward extractive AI technologies seems to be the sign of the times, this development is arguably not a new experience for many Indigenous peoples around the world who have been dealing with similar corporate colonialist strategies for centuries. Galloway (2012) argues that computers are “ethical machines” that make certain ideologies of objectification, individualization, calculability, and compartmentalization the very basis of everyday economic, social, and political processes. At the same time, Indigenous actors are at the forefront pushing for sovereignty over data and infrastructure to contend with extractivism that encroaches upon both data and land. In this situation, how are these multi-layered digital logics understood by Indigenous actors? How do they engage with digital technologies in the face of their colonizing tendencies? And how do Indigenous peoples leverage them to pursue their own cultural, economic, and political priorities? In this workshop, we aim to create a space for collective reflection rather than privileging formal presentations. To that end, we are organizing an online meeting structured in two parts. In the first part, participants are invited to select an image as a starting point for a brief (10-minute) story related to their research, experiences, and/or concerns on the topic. This initial segment is intended to set the tone for the encounter and help identify shared issues. In the second part, we will revisit the questions that emerged, engaging in a collective discussion to exchange perspectives, articulate challenges, offer advice, and develop ideas collaboratively. The goal is to establish a set of common concerns that can serve as a basis for further work. Call for Papers: Gender and Sexuality Research in Times of Crisis Symposium @ Birkbeck, University of London Friday, 13 February 2026 The CHASE Gender and Sexuality Research Network (CHASE GSRN) is happy to announce its inaugural symposium, Gender and Sexuality Research in Times of Crisis. This symposium aims to showcase the work of early career researchers, and facilitate connections and collaborations between scholars working on gender and sexuality, broadly defined, across the arts, humanities and social sciences. CHASE GSRN is a new interdisciplinary network established to support early career gender and sexuality scholars at a time when our work is under incredible pressure, both financial and political. Gender and Sexuality Research in Times of Crisis will create spaces of dialogue and opportunities for community-building between ECRs and established scholars in the field, who will be invited to participate as interlocutors. We invite abstracts from postgraduate research students, postdoctoral researchers, and early career scholars working across feminist theory, gender studies, queer and trans studies and related disciplines. In particular, we invite papers that work with these literatures and frameworks as they intersect with: * Far-right politics and movements * Race and racial capitalism * Migration, diaspora, and border regimes * Disability activism and ableism * Neoimperialism, militarism, and authoritarianism * Popular feminism and misogyny * Transphobia and trans exclusionary movements * Inclusion politics and DEI * Feminist and/or queer political economy * Queer poetics * Bodily autonomy and reproductive justice * Community and care in times of crisis * Queer media * Queer digital cultures * Local and transnational solidarities * Protest and resistance * Queer and feminist utopias * LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing * Gendered and sexual harm and violence * Censorship, misinformation, disinformation, and post-truth politics * Research methodologies, ethics, and obstacles To submit, please send an abstract (max. 300 words) and a short bio (max. 100 words) to chase.gsrn(a)gmail.com<mailto:chase.gsrn@gmail.com> by 1 December 2025. About CHASE Gender and Sexuality Research Network Struggles over the rights and freedoms of women, queer and transgender people are increasingly at the centre of the political zeitgeist, yet academic research that equips us to understand and navigate these struggles is increasingly politicised and systemically threatened. CHASE GSRN is a peer-to-peer support infrastructure for scholars engaged in gender and sexuality research, with a particular emphasis on building capacity across institutions and uplifting postgraduate researchers (PGRs) who are working in a national context of decreased prioritisation and institutional support for producing robust knowledge about non-normative sexualities and genders, and the inequalities attendant to those identities. The CHASE Network recognises that political assaults on non-normative sexualities and genders are increasing alongside pressures on scholars working in so-called ‘controversial areas’. This is particularly important for gender and sexuality studies, which not only includes many researchers working on contentious topics and with marginalised communities, but also involves a high number of scholars who are women, queer, and impacted by sexual and gendered violence. The Network is grounded in a fundamental commitment to the importance of nurturing inclusive and solidaristic communities for marginalised and minoritised scholars who are often (as is the case for LGBTQ+ scholars) facing threats to their basic rights and freedoms alongside fighting for their scholarship. Our ethos is grounded in a feminist ethics of care and a commitment to nourishing inclusive, and (where possible) intergenerational, formations of queer community. The co-directors of CHASE GSRN are Professor Tanya Serisier (Birkbeck), Dr Zeena Feldman (King’s College London) and Dr Kat Higgins (Goldsmiths).

Three new roles at the ANU HASS Digital Research Hub

We're advertising three pivotal new roles tailored to help our new HASS Digital Research Hub build capability at the Australian National University, and nationally in partnership with the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC). The research fellow roles would suit candidates interested in developing academic and/or research software engineering careers in the humanities and social sciences. The successful applicants will work with me and our community of scholars to define a digital strategy that will work now and into the future. The ARDC RSE-CEP RSE role will support the Research Software Engineering Capacity Enhancement Project (RSE-CEP), a co-investment partnership with the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) through the HASS and Indigenous Research Data Commons (DOI: 10.3565/x5f6-mw53). Announcing the *Critical Commons Research Network*

Hello AoIR, It is my pleasure to announce a new project, the *Critical Commons Research Network* (CCRN). This project is funded by a Wikimedia Foundation Research grant to help us gather researchers who examine the digital commons and its connections from infrastructural, political-economic, policy, and other critical approaches. This network aims to examine the role, importance, and impact of different aspects and areas of the digital commons and to foster relationships and mentorships for researchers in this area. I know many of y'all on this list align with this type of research, and it is our hope that this can help connect us together in ways that can elevate each other's work. Dear scholars! I am organising a panel for ICA26, and would like to invite interested panelists. Please see details below if you would be interested. *Panel: Addressing Inequalities in Inter-Ability Communication: Explorations of Practice, Performance, and Presentation* *Topic Description: *This panel will explore how disabled individuals, scholars, performers, and artists center their narratives through communication that incorporates or conveys their perceptions, navigation of the world, or sense of reality. The common social scripts for communication require communicators to be matched within "norms" of ability and access. This expectation creates pressure to conform with conventions of delivery that effectively marginalize any expression that does not fit the culturally sanctioned scripts, whether due to necessity (e.g., bodily or neurological limitations) or comfort (e.g., what feels natural within a particular body). This panel explores what happens when that pressure to conform is relaxed, and disabled individuals find or create space to freely to express themselves according to what they can do very well, their lived and embodied experiences, and what feels natural for their bodies or minds. *Looking for panelists who feel their work intersects with this topic including:* research, practice, presentation, art, humor, or performance --- *About me: *My Name is Emmanuel-Sathya Gray. My interdisciplinary work in communication and community psychology currently focuses on what performers and artists teach us about breaking patterns of deference to dominant narratives, and bringing our realities from the margins to the center stage. More on the Anthropic deal for academic authors

Thanks, danah for mentioning the deal with Anthropic to (minimally) compensate authors whose books were pirated. First, before you start eyeing a new yacht, keep in mind that the promised $3K per book settlement is split between authors and publishers. They are recommending a 50/50 split but that will be up to the publisher. I'm trying to find out what academic publishers plan to do and will share that information if/when I get it. Also, the fact that they ripped off your books is not enough: the "list" represents a narrow time frame. In my case, 6 books are in the database of stolen books but only one was taken during the time period covered by the settlement. The process is a little different for authors of textbooks, monographs, or books published by university presses. FYI educational/textbook and university press/academic authors represent almost half of the close to 500,000 works infringed in the class! The Textbook and Academic Authors Association collaborated with the Authors Guild to make sure our special issues were addressed. TAA's Kim Pawlak was in the hearing room and is actively involved in getting correct information to all of us.
