Dear colleagues, We invite you to submit papers for the Special Issue: Messaging Applications and Global Cultures of Mobility in the journal Mobile Media & Communication, an international and interdisciplinary journal dedicated to publishing academic research analyzing the intersection of communication and mobility. This special issue, edited by Rose Marie Santini (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), James Fitzgerald (Dublin City University), Rosana Pinheiro-Machado (University College Dublin), and Débora Salles (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), seeks papers that critically analyze the intersections between messaging applications and practices of mobility in both local and global contexts. Once conceived as simple alternatives to SMS, messaging applications have transformed into multimedia ecosystems central to contemporary life, with uses ranging from real-time tracking to political and economic organization across different cultural contexts. While much of the academic literature emphasizes their risks—such as disinformation, surveillance, and illicit activities—it is equally important to examine their productive potential, from reducing social isolation to integrating businesses and increasing the visibility of marginalized groups. This special issue thus aims to bring together contributions that deepen the understanding of these multiple dynamics and their local and global impacts. The CFP encourages regional and interdisciplinary contributions from scholars at all career stages, to investigate how and why messaging applications intersect with mobility, while analyzing their impacts on individuals, politics, culture, and society. We welcome single-platform case studies as well as comparative analyses of two or more applications, with a special emphasis on contributions from the Global South to ensure geographical and conceptual diversity. We are particularly interested in articles that address topics such as: - Cultures of mobility on messaging applications in the Global North and South; - Messaging applications as tools for real-time political resistance and organized protest; - Messaging applications as sites of (state or private) surveillance; - Differences in cultures of mobility across different messaging applications, within the same territory or across different regions; - The impact of specific business models on mobility within messaging applications; - The use of messaging applications for formal and informal economic activities, and their implications for boundaries between legal/illegal and formal/informal practices; - How messaging applications shape the geographies of commercial activities; - The effects of artificial intelligence integration on new or transformed practices of mobility. The Department of Media Production, Management, and Technology (MPMT) at the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications invites applications for one assistant professor position and one associate/assistant professor position with a focus on media technology and/or management, starting August 2026. We are looking for two faculty members who conduct original research that examines the psychological processing, and/or the economic, societal, ethical, and cultural implications of media technologies, including, but not limited to, the following areas: • Entertainment media • Artificial Intelligence (AI)-related technologies, such as social robots, generative AI, recommendation systems, and algorithms • Social media/mobile media/user analytics • Digital culture and strategy • Platform studies • Science and Technology Studies • Law and policy • Media and technology startups, organizations, and industry development Applicants are expected to demonstrate a solid theoretical basis for understanding media technologies and use diverse traditional or innovative methods to analyze and explain media practices and/or media management strategies. VARIABILITY aims to be the premier forum for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and results in all aspects of software and systems variability management, reuse, software configuration, and customization. As software and systems become increasingly configurable, reusable, and adaptable, managing their variability across all lifecycle phases is more critical—and more challenging —than ever. VARIABILITY 2026 seeks to bring together the diverse communities that address these challenges from theoretical, technical, and practical perspectives. Submissions must clearly articulate the problem, its relevance, the proposed contribution, and validation results. • Short Papers (6 - 8 pages excluding references): Short papers present early-stage research, novel ideas, or conceptual proposals that are not yet fully developed or validated but offer promising directions. These papers should articulate the vision, motivation, and potential impact. Submissions will be double- blind and reviewed by at least three experts. Submissions will be evaluated based on their novelty, relevance, rigor, transparency, and presentation. Authors of submissions to the first deadline might be invited to submit a revision of their papers to the second deadline, which will be reviewed as a revision. Accepted papers will be published in the VARIABILITY 2026 proceedings by Springer in the LNCS series. Revisions Research-track papers can be submitted to the first or second cycle. In the first cycle, papers can receive the following decisions: accept, revision, or reject. Revision means that the reviewers believe that the paper has potential, but that its quality or contribution is not yet ready for publication. Such papers are offered lightweight shepherding by a community member, who is not necessarily a PC member or reviewer. Revised papers should be submitted to the second cycle together with a response letter, explaining how the reviewer comments were addressed. They are then reviewed by the same PC members. Papers rejected in the first cycle can be resubmitted in the second cycle, but need to contain an appendix “Changes to First-Cycle Submission” at the end of the PDF (after references, regardless of the page limit) that lists the major changes in bullet-point format. Journal Special Issue Selected accepted papers will be invited to submit extended versions with at least 30% additional and original material, to be published in a special issue in a reputable Software Engineering journal (currently under negotiation). First Book Review: "an exciting and engaging read"!

Dear Colleagues, The reviews are starting to come in for the Routledge Handbook of the Influence Industry (edited by myself and Vian Bakir and with many excellent contributors). I am pulling out a few extracts here for you. In doing so, it offers a unique blend of theoretical insights and well-curated case studies by formulating a conversant reflection on the subject and a comprehensive framework to help navigate the complexities of the modern influence industry." And I was particularly delighted to read this! "The book has an academic flavour, but there is a journalistic investigative approach to various chapters, sharing exclusive facts and presenting analysis, making it an exciting and engaging read." Exciting and engaging is of course what we always aspire to, but is often a tall reach for a scholarly book! :) And Dr. Asif also observes that "For practitioners of public diplomacy and strategic communication, the book offers a pedagogical range of options and understandings to enhance new insights and practical guidance at the same time" Vian Bakir particularly liked the reviewer's insight that it's ''an indispensable pedagogical reference tool for students, academia and whistleblowers. The book’s global scope and detailed empirical, in-depth case study approach have positioned it at the nexus of political communication, strategic influence and digital governance, beyond what was once the usual PR and propaganda."
