DiscoverText is a research tool, for advanced Boolean search, metadata filtering, human coding, reporting inter-rater reliability, clustering, duplicate detection, n-grams, annotation validation, CoderRank, and machine-learning. It was built by academics for academics to support multi-disciplinary, multi-lingual, analysis of text. We are fully confident that IBM Watson may have Bob Dylan locked down, but we have the tools and methods to make your research and your classroom better. Most text analytics software packages work well with English text and a handful of other languages; however, many of these tools fail when analyzing non-Latin, multilingual texts, such as Arabic, which appears correctly only in a right-to-left format. Further, many software solutions have additional problems tokenizing text when it is an ideograph-based language (e.g. Chinese or Korean). Texifter’s software, DiscoverText, is unique in that it is capable of effective operations on multilingual texts and the coding platform builds effective custom machine classifiers on the fly and at scale for these corpora. Competition: Ethics in Computer Science, with up to $3.5 Million in Prizes
by Richard Forno 11 Oct '18

11 Oct '18

FYI..... https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2018/10/10/announcing-a-competition-for-ethic… The Responsible Computer Science Challenge — by Omidyar Network, Mozilla, Schmidt Futures, and Craig Newmark Philanthropies — calls on professors to integrate ethics into undergraduate computer science courses < - > Through the Responsible Computer Science Challenge, Omidyar Network, Mozilla, Schmidt Futures, and Craig Newmark Philanthropies are supporting the conceptualization, development, and piloting of curricula that integrate ethics with computer science. Our hope is that this coursework will not only be implemented, but also scaled to colleges and universities across the country — and beyond. Between December 2018 and July 2020, we will award up to $3.5 million in prizes to promising proposals. The challenge is open to both individual professors or collaborative teams consisting of professors, graduate students, and teaching assistants. We’re seeking educators who are passionate about teaching not only computer science, but how it can be deployed in a responsible, positive way. The challenge consists of two stages: In Stage 1, we will seek concepts for deeply integrating ethics into existing undergraduate computer science courses, either through syllabi changes (e.g. including a reading or exercise on ethics in each class meeting) or teaching methodology adjustments (e.g. pulling teaching assistants from ethics departments). Stage 1 winners will receive up to $150,000 each to develop and pilot their ideas. Winners will be announced in April 2019. In Stage 2, we will support the spread and scale of the most promising approaches developed in Stage 1. Stage 2 winners will receive up to $200,000 each and will be announced in summer 2020. Projects will be judged by an external review committee of academics, tech industry leaders, and others, who will use evaluation criteria developed jointly by Omidyar Network and Mozilla. Judges include Bobby Schnabel, professor of computer science at the University of Colorado Boulder and former president of ACM; Maria Klawe, president of Harvey Mudd College; Joshua Cohen, Marta Sutton Weeks Professor of Ethics in Society at Stanford University; Brenda Darden Wilkerson, president and CEO of the Anita Borg Institute; and others. We are accepting Initial Funding Concepts for Stage 1 now through December 13, 2018. < - > https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2018/10/10/announcing-a-competition-for-ethic… --- Dr. Richard Forno Senior Lecturer, CSEE Director, Graduate Cybersecurity Program Assistant Director, UMBC Center for Cybersecurity UMBC Veterans Faculty Fellow

Got ethics?
by Charles M. Ess 09 Oct '18

09 Oct '18

Of course you do. In addition: if you have internet research ethics on your mind, on behalf of my co-chairs and the AoIR Ethics Working Group, you are warmly invited to our open discussion of the DRAFT overview/introduction to IRE 3.0: Thursday, 11/Oct/2018 2:00pm - 3:30pm Sheraton - Salon 4 The document in its current state represents some two years of work by many hands, including organizers and participants at the ethics-related sessions at AoIR in 2016 and 2017, as well as subsequent conferences and workshops organized in Aarhus, Denmark, and Oslo, Norway. We are especially grateful to Anna Jobin and aline franzke for their extensive work on setting up our Slack space, the beginnings of a Zotero repository of documents, and substantive contributions to the structure and content of many of these documents. The opening summary is appended below to give you an initial sense of how the overview /introduction is shaping up, along with affiliated documents. We will make the document available in electronic format at the beginning of the session, accompanied by a brief introduction and overview from the co-chairs. The idea is to solicit your further critical comments and suggestions for improving the document over the coming year, with a view towards final submission at the AoIR 2019 meeting. We know the conference schedule is packed full of compellingly interesting panels and presentations - but we hope many of you will be able to find the time and energy to attend the session on Thursday. As with our previous ethics documents, this work depends centrally on your individual and collective wisdom and experience for its further development. Safe travels and see you there, - charles ess, Co-Chair, AoIR IRE 3.0 Ethics Working Group; Anja Bechman (Aarhus), Co-Chair, aline shakti franzke (University of Duisburg-Essen), Co-Chair Michael Zimmer (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Co-Chair Anne Hove Henriksen (Aarhus), Research Assistant and Administrator The AoIR IRE 3.0 Ethics Working Group, including: David J. Brake, Ane Kathrine Gammelby, Nele Heise, Annette Markham, Katrin Tildenberg, and Paul J. Reilly. == Summary This document introduces Internet Research Ethics (IRE) 3.0. We begin with a review of the AoIR ethical approaches and guidelines that we now designate as IRE 1.0 (Ess and the AoIR ethics working committee, 2002) and IRE 2.0 (Markham and Buchanan 2012; Ess, 2017): while driven by on-going changes and developments in the technological, legal, and ethical contexts that shape internet research, IRE 1.0 and 2.0 ground a basic ethical approach that continues as foundational for IRE 3.0. IRE 3.0 is then illustrated by way of two emerging elements – namely, greater attention to stages of research and what has become a standard problem of informed consent in Big Data research approaches. We then list and more briefly discuss the primary additional ethical challenges in IRE 3.0 as identified by the AoIR Ethics Working Group (EWG). We offer a general structure for ethical analysis, designed to help identify the ethically-relevant issues and questions, along with additional suggestions for how to begin to analyze and address these challenges in more detail. We aim to take up and exemplify this general structure as guiding more extensive analyses of specific modules in IRE 3.0, to be developed by teams made up of EWG members. Our first module on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is being developed by Anja Bechmann and Bendert Zevenbergen. A second module on Corporate Data is being developed. These specific modules will be included in a second series of documents, to be made available as they are ready as well as modified in light of subsequent developments. In these ways, we aim to produce “living documents,” i.e., documents that remain open to expansion and revision as ongoing technological developments demand. == -- Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/people/aca/charlees/index.html> Postboks 1093 Blindern 0317 Oslo, Norway c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no

Shenzhen forum-communication innovation, new media, digital journalism
by Rolien Hoyng 09 Oct '18

09 Oct '18

I hope this forum, which includes three separate tracks, is of interest to some of you! Rolien Hoyng ----- *THE SHENZHEN FORUM 2019* COMMUNICATION INNOVATION, NEW MEDIA, AND DIGITAL JOURNALISM Shenzhen, China, June 26 –28, 2019 Co-sponsored by the Shenzhen University (SZU) of China and the National Communication Association (NCA) THE SHENZHEN FORUM WILL BRING TOGETHER SCHOLARS AND MEDIA PRACTITIONERS from around the world to engage in conversations about cutting-edge communication-based issues. The Forum will include three “tracks”: TRACK 1: EXPERIMENTS IN COMMUNICATION INNOVATION, led by Dr. Rolien Hoyng, Chinese University of Hong Kong, rolienhoyng(a)cuhk.edu.hk (the NCA representative), and Dr. Chen Changfeng, Tsinghua University, fengchen5266(a)163.com (the SZU representative) Despite critiques of the ongoing glorification of “innovation” within multiple corporate spheres, scholars remain committed to both studying and practicing inventiveness, newness, and difference. This track accordingly reflects on how different communicative habits emerge from within processes of technological standardization, global integration, and digital innovation. It looks across the front-end experiences of users and the back-end infrastructures of digital and global communication to prompt participants to consider the dilemmas and opportunities of innovation and inventiveness. On the one hand, the globalization of infrastructures and platforms seems contingent on their ability to accommodate different practices and uses, even while doing so within increasingly standardized settings. On the other hand, new technological applications may not simply partake in ongoing processes of globalization, but also can change where globalization is headed. This track will ask: Does “innovation” support or compromise existing corporate control and statecraft? Does it fuel targeted struggles for social justice in the age of globalization? Or, does “innovation” call forth new communicative possibilities that transcend our understanding? This track will pursue these questions by inviting scholars to share specific case studies of communication “innovation” in practice. TRACK 2: INTERSECTIONS IN NEW MEDIA AND HEALTH COMMUNICATION, led by Dr. Yuqiong Zhou, Shenzhen University, yuqiongzhou(a)126.com (the SZU representative), and Dr. Amy Hasinoff, CU Denver, amy.hasinoff(a)ucdenver.edu (the NCA representative) Traditional health communication scholarship has focused on face-to-face interactions, yet the proliferation of new media technologies means that many patients now speak with their doctor or nurse-practitioner via online messaging platforms, while many health care seekers resort to online systems for information and advice. At the same time, public communication about family health, dieting, gender and sexuality, and aging is now widely practiced via new media platforms, few of which are refereed for accuracy, and many of which are little more than marketing scams. Thus, while there has never before been so much information available to users regarding their health, there has also never been so much disinformation waiting to send users into tailspins of bad advice, risky behavior, and financial ruin. In addition, in both China and America, questions of new media and health communication hinge on access to the internet, meaning these issues touch upon class, wealth, and debates about how “public” the internet really is. In short, health communication and new media are now interlaced in empowering, alarming, and confusing ways. This track will enable participants to study the interweaving of new media and health communication via specific case studies drawn from American, Chinese, and other international contexts. TRACK 3: THE DIGITAL JOURNALISM CHALLENGE, led by Dr. Qingwen Dong, University of the Pacific, qdong(a)pacific.edu (the NCA representative) and Xiaojin Gu, Shenzhen University, gxj(a)szu.edu.cn (the SZU representative) A digital revolution is transforming how we think about journalism. “Legacy” outlets such as the New York Times and People’s Daily face challenges from a vast array of websites and emerging new media platforms. Some of these new outlets offer exciting opportunities for producing “citizen journalism” or “backpack journalism,” thus furthering the cause of social justice. Yet many of them have become the purveyors of lies, conspiracy theories, and calls for violence, meaning the world of journalism is fracturing. For example, in America, the “news” is now produced not only by credible journalists but also by propagandists at Fox, neo-Nazis at the Daily Stormer, and a reality-challenged tweeter from the White House. In China, the “news” is now produced not only by the Party’s many outlets, but by separatists in Xinjiang and radicals in Tibet. In India, Myanmar, and Iran, digital outlets have called for riots and stoked ethnic and religious violence. Many observers are therefore calling ours a “post-truth” age. Indeed, all around the world, we are facing a crisis in journalism that is underwritten by a crisis in notions of evidence, trust, and credibility—with the whole process being driven by revolutions in digital media production and distribution. This track will pursue the causes and consequences of this digital revolution in journalism, and will feature case studies of both negative and positive examples. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS NCA participants will arrive in Shenzhen on the evening of Wednesday, June 25. On Thursday, June 26, we will lead a morning excursion to the international headquarters of TenCent, one of the largest media companies in the world, where participants will interact with China’s new social media leaders. That afternoon, NCA will lead a pre-Forum workshop to discuss best practices in international communication, offering participants an opportunity to engage in open conversation regarding the complicated terrain of academic and political life in contemporary China. The Shenzhen Forum will then hold sessions all day on Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28, concluding Saturday evening with an NCA-hosted reception. Participants will depart from Shenzhen on Sunday, June 29. In an act of great generosity, SZU will cover hotel accommodations for the nights of June 25, 26, 27, and 28, as well as all conference registration fees. To support the travel needs of NCA-member graduate students and early-career faculty members, NCA will award 10 $1,000 travel grants to selected individuals. APPLICATION INFORMATION We invite submissions that address any of the “tracks” cited above. Applicants should submit a project proposal of roughly 1,000 words. Submissions can be made in English or Chinese and should indicate the submitter’s home institution. Submissions should be in Microsoft Word or Adobe.pdf format. The deadline for all submissions is February 1, 2019. Applicants will be contacted with results by March 1, 2019. Please note that we assume all applicants are making good-will submissions and will, if accepted, attend the Forum. Submitters should send their materials to the appropriate “track leader” listed above (with all English language submissions going to the NCA representative for that track and all Chinese language submissions going to the SZU representative for that track). RESULTING PUBLICATIONS Following the model used to publish Imagining China: Rhetorics of Nationalism in the Age of Globalization (Michigan State University Press, 2017), the track leaders will edit two volumes, with one in English (NCA in charge) and another in Chinese (SZU in charge). These are not conference proceedings, but academic books wherein each chapter is an expanded version of the original conference presentation. The track leaders will solicit chapters from the conference presenters and will handle all subsequent book-publishing tasks working in conjunction with the series editor, Stephen J. Hartnett.
