The top candidate will be able to contribute expertise, leadership, and imagination to the department’s efforts to theorize and prefigure responses to the future of the human being. Candidates should be highly collaborative, exploratory, and hardworking, with a humanities-oriented research specialization in one or more of the following areas: the environment (natural or built), fabrication (material, biological, electronic), health (cellular, systemic, societal), technology (digital, analog, biological), or storytelling (place-based and/or digital). Experience with and an understanding of international and/or foreign language content creation, or Indigenous/First Nations/Native lifeways will be of particular interest given the Department’s institutional and geographic location. The teaching load is two courses per semester. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as curricular design and program innovation. The Department of Public & Applied Humanities is one of 18 units in the University of Arizona’s College of Humanities. The Department works to translate the personal enrichment characteristic of humanities study into public enrichment and the direct and tangible improvement of the human condition. Assistant Professor in Digital Cultures at University of Denver The Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies at the University of Denver invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Digital Cultures to begin September 1, 2019. We seek candidates with research agendas addressing far-reaching societal and cultural shifts emerging alongside the growing pervasiveness of digital technologies, with focus on cultural and ideological dimensions and impacts in areas such as: networked and digital journalism, tech industry studies, multimedia storytelling, and/or technology in everyday life. We are particularly interested in those whose research methods and/or creative applications are evolving to meet the challenges of studying digital production, practices, data collection and use, etc. Candidates should be prepared to help equip students with the multimedia production and editing skills necessary to engage with the ways that digital technologies have transformed communication-related fields across multiple platforms, and will be asked to teach a combination of theory, skill/production, and additional undergraduate and graduate classes according to area of expertise. The normal teaching load is 5 courses spread across 3 academic quarters in an academic year, prior to receipt of tenure. Dear colleagues, this is a reminder for the Call of Papers for the conference "Journalism and Platforms" that we're organising in Toulouse, France, on January 23-25 2019. In particular, the conference aims to study the impact of Google, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Apple News and others on journalistic practices, on editorial and business strategies of publishers, on the nature and form of news and on audiences. Proposals will analyse socio-economic, technical, legal and political dimensions of the relations between media and platforms. Oral presentations and proposals can be in English but will be no translation service will be available. So a minimum level of comperehension in French is necessary for participation. A special issue of the Journal Sur le journalisme - About Journalism will be edited after the conference with papers in French, English, Portuguese and Spanish. The early web is now simply another object of nostalgia. Tech anniversaries are a dime a dozen, while once cool digital aesthetics have made several ironic comebacks. All of this reinforces a sense that we’ve left behind a digital history that was as clunky and slow as it was idealistic and naïve. How can we rethink this relationship to the web’s past and the past web? This question is crucial today as the open web continues to lose ground to platforms and apps. How can this history be reconstructed and re-evaluated, and how are web archives and web histories impacted by technological change? What do traditional problems of preservation and historiography look like at scale? And what stories capture the diverse transformations and continuities that mark nearly 30 years of web history? There is of course no single web history, materially or conceptually speaking. There is instead a politics of archives, technologies and discourses that needs to be uncovered. How can we expand our view of web history beyond Silicon Valley and celebrated cases? And how can we reveal the technological, social and economic contexts that have shaped not just the present web, but how we access its past? What role do archives play in uncovering the histories of the web, platforms and apps, as well as their production and usage contexts? This conference aims to bring together scholars, archivists and artists interested in preserving, portraying and otherwise engaging with the web that was. In addition to paper submissions, we invite proposals for audiovisual installations, posters, software demos, or other media that connects to the conference themes.
