However, such research risks remaining isolated within disciplinary silos, often despite the similar processes, practices and materials studied. This conference aims to inspire greater dialogue across disciplinary boundaries in order to develop a richer understanding of the role of the digital in creating and sustaining diasporic connections and communities, and of how diasporic groups and individuals transform and shape digital tools and technologies for their own creative and strategic purposes. Through this dialogue it is hoped that new transdisciplinary ways of working may develop which challenge knowledge fragmentation in order to confront the complexity of the contemporary context of intensified cultural and linguistic flows and new patterns of human mobility. At the same time, drawing attention to diasporic narratives and approaches to digital culture and technologies can function as both critique and challenge to centralised narratives of digital progress and development often restricted to predominantly Anglophone contexts. We especially welcome research which pays attention to the linguistic and cultural dimensions of digital technologies and media. This is, however, not restricted to any specific geographical area, language or type of community. Equally, the digital is intended to encompass the fullest range of digital practices, materials and technologies, while the conference aims to include methodological and analytical approaches ranging across, for example, ethnographic, cultural studies and computational approaches. Areas of particular, but not exclusive, interest include: * Social media and migration focused research; * Multilingualism and digitally mediated communications; * Histories of the internet and web archives research; * Ethnographies of the internet and uses of digital technologies (including research combining offline-online methods); * Digital media, cultural and visual studies; * Digital and diasporic cultural memory; * Digitally mapping and visualising migrations and diasporic networks, with attention to ethical and political concerns. Abstracts should be between 150-300 words in length (the bibliography does not count towards the word limit). Presentations can be on previously published research or ongoing projects. We intend to develop a Special Issue or edited volume which will include an invited selection of the research presented at the conference. Please consider joining us on Sunday, November 4, 2018 for our workshop, “Rural Computing: Beyond Access and Infrastructure” at CSCW 2018 in Jersey City, NJ. There is increasing interest in the fields of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), social computing, and human computer interaction (HCI) in rural areas. new open "diff" catalog of global online news changes

For those interested in measuring the fluidity of the online sphere and in particular how much online news coverage changes over time (from 404's to redirects to title and text editing), we've released this morning the new GDELT GDG, which recrawls every article monitored by GDELT again after 24 hours and after one week and catalogs all of the changes it observes. Text changes record only changes to the article text itself, not the surrounding page. Changes are reported at the "word" level for space delimited languages and character level for others (currently for Burmese, Chinese, Dzongkha, Japanese, Khmer, Laothian, Thai, Tibetan and Vietnamese, with more being added shortly). We're particularly excited about the ability to assess change globally across countries and languages and at scale, across everything GDELT monitors each day. The resulting global change log is all open data and available in one minute updates as JSON files, a BigQuery table and an RSS feed for web archives (allowing them to recrawl changed pages). *CFP: #Talkingpoints – Twitter and civic debate* With its hashtags, trending topics, and 280-character messages, Twitter has become the place to watch ideas, movements, and communities develop and become part of a global consciousness. While some scholars and social commentators are excited at the increased visibility of groups and ideas commonly excluded from mainstream discourse, as well as the possibility of dialogue between groups, others have expressed concern about the presence of echo chambers and filter bubbles, as well as the lack of “real” interaction. This raises the question what discussions on Twitter actually look like. Is there real engagement? What voices are heard and magnified, and which ones are backgrounded, or missing altogether? What kinds of conversations unfold on the platform, and do they contribute to or even qualify as civic debate? This volume, edited by Gwen Bouvier and Judith E. Rosenbaum, seeks to shed light on the nature of the debates witnessed on Twitter through a consideration of a multitude of methodological and theoretical viewpoints. We are seeking contributions from a variety of backgrounds that consider the various types of conversations on Twitter, the users who engage in these conversations, and the impact these conversations have. We welcome abstracts from across disciplines and methods, although proposals that present findings based on empirical analysis, including quantitative, qualitative, ethnographic or political economic, are preferred. Studies can focus on a range of aspects, from the smaller details of conversation to trends that point to broader changes and patterns in use and participation, as well as issues of resistance, marginalization of voices, off-line/ on-line relations, community management, patterns in uses of platforms and campaigning and/or activism. *Sites Queer: Technologies, Spaces and Otherness* *University of Puerto Rico School of Architecture, Río Piedras Campus* *Abstract Submission Deadline: 31 August 2018* *Conference Date: February 7-9, 2019* Much of queer theory, history, art and performance have been discussed from Anglo American and European perspectives. *Sites Queer* is an interdisciplinary three-day conference exploring the multiple ways in which LGBTQ+ spaces and identities get reconfigured, performed and contested through the technologies and spatial politics of diverse ethnic cultures. Although we welcome submissions from all cultural backgrounds, we are particularly interested in inviting research projects rooted in Latin American, Asian, Aboriginal and African cultures. >From within the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, *Sites Queer* will be a space to discuss, foreground and analyze divergent queer histories, narratives and spatial practices. Subsequently, playing off the word 'site' as a physical locale as well a digital space, the conference will problematize the ways the Internet, digital technologies, mobile apps and social networks are informing, changing, shaping or contesting queerness for ethnic minorities at urban and rural levels. The outcome of the conference will be to create a book proposal acting as a critical, cultural memory; a written and visual record; and a speculative, spatial cartography of queer spaces for ethnic minorities, drawing them out from their Otherness and situating them within contemporary sociopolitical debates. Since 2001, he has been involved in research that explores intersections between digital media technologies, gender and sexuality. He is the author of *Gaydar Culture: Technology Embodiment and Gay Male Culture* (Ashgate, 2010), which offered one of the first detailed explorations of gay men’s digital culture outside of the USA. He was one fo the first scholars to publish research on hook-up app culture, and he has worked with health organisations, commercial enterprises and public institutions. He was a visiting researcher at Microsoft Research New England in 2017, and a visiting scholar at Stanford University in 2018. Richard Miskolci is Associate Professor of Sociology at the Federal University of São Paulo and researcher of the National Council on Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). He is also the coordinator of Quereres - Research Group on Differences, Human Rights and Health ( www.quereres.sites.unifesp.br) One of the founders of Queer Studies in Brazil, Miskolci has published in 2017 *Desejos Digitais: uma análise sociológica da busca por parceiros online *(*Digital Desires: a sociological analysis of the online search for partners*). Ben Campkin is the author of *Remaking London: Decline and Regeneration in Urban Culture* (IB Tauris, 2013), which won the Urban Communication Foundation’s Jane Jacobs Award, 2015.
