For further information, please contact the series editors, Josh Braun and Ramon Lobato (details below and at https://distributionmatters.net) Many Thanks, Josh and Ramon DISTRIBUTION MATTERS A new MIT Press book series Distribution Matters explores how media content, ideas, and information move through the world — and to what effect. Distribution networks — from postal services to social media platforms — affect in essential ways who has access to cultural resources, and on what terms. The Distribution Matters book series explores the impact of strategies, business models, and infrastructures for distribution across the media industries, including screen, print, broadcast, and digital media. It seeks to publish cutting-edge, critical scholarship that offers new ways to understand the movement of media through time and space. The series is open to media scholars within a range of humanities and social science fields, including media studies, communication history, anthropology, sociology, science and technology studies, internet studies, and cultural studies. We welcome proposals from scholars whose work explores how access to cultural resources is variously enabled, constrained, choreographed, and contested in and through distribution. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: * the histories of media distribution networks, their path dependencies, and social consequences * distribution dynamics within particular sectors, such as games, video, publishing, and advertising * logics of digital distribution (platformization, aggregation, recommendation, filtering, blocking, etc.) * governance and regulation of distribution networks * theoretical debates about circulation, networks, mobility, virality, and other issues everyday working practices and cultures of distribution * informal distribution and piracy For further information, please contact the editors: Dr Joshua Braun (University of Massachusetts Amherst) - jabraun(a)journ.umass.edu Dr Ramon Lobato (RMIT University, Australia) - ramon.lobato(a)rmit.edu.au More information and a printable version of this flyer are available at <https://distributionmatters.net/>. -- Josh Braun, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Journalism Studies Journalism Department University of Massachusetts Amherst @josh_braun Skype: wideaperture http://wideaperture.net/ book: http://yalebooks.com/book/9780300197501/program-brought-you "Maybe the only gift is a chance to inquire, to know nothing for certain. CFP: Platform Surveillance (Special Responsive Issue of S&S)
by Monahan, Torin 01 Oct '18

01 Oct '18

Call for Contributions: Platform Surveillance A special responsive issue of Surveillance & Society http://www.surveillance-and-society.org<http://www.surveillance-and-society.org/> edited by David Murakami Wood and Torin Monahan https://ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/surveillance-and-society/announcem… Responsive issues are a new initiative by Surveillance & Society to deal with urgent current global priorities and transformations. They present a larger number and range of contributions than for a typical issue but each contribution is typically much shorter (around 2500 words), more current and polemical, and written to a tighter deadline. The idea is that the issue will serve as a concise guide to a particular debate or development. Our first responsive issue was on ‘Surveillance and the Global Turn to Authoritarianism’,https://ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/surveillance-and-society/issue/view/authority. This issue of Surveillance & Society calls for short contributions from scholars analyzing the surveillance dimensions and politics of large-scale digital platforms. Recently, the profound influence digital platforms has been thrust—once again—into the public imaginary with controversies surrounding issues as diverse as Facebook’s data-sharing practices, censorship on Chinese social media, and cities’ profligate courtship of Amazon’s second headquarters, but surveillance-driven digital platforms possess the capacity to remake social, economic, political and cultural life in multiple arenas, typically without significant public awareness or debate. This responsive issue will feature papers that grapple with different dimensions or types of platform surveillance. Contributions can focus on: * specific platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitch, Uber, Airbnb, etc.) * domains (e.g., policing, transportation, education, etc.) * concepts and technologies (internet of things, smart cities, blockchain, the cloud etc.) * practices (e.g., cultural production, consumption, appropriation etc.), or * politics (ideologies, democracy, cooperativism, utopianism, etc.) However, the emphasis should be on the surveillance functions and ramifications of digital platforms. We are especially interested in submissions that acknowledge the social, political and economic importance of platforms and do not fall back on simple technological determinist arguments (whether for or against). Submissions will be considered in a two-stage review process. 1. In the first instance, we invite brief proposals in the following format: * Name(s) * Affiliation(s) * Contact e-mail * Platform or Theme to be covered * Brief abstract (150 words) The deadline for proposals is October 24th 2018 to: dmw(a)queensu.ca <mailto:dmw@queensu.ca> <mailto:dmw@queensu.ca>The editors will then generally select one proposal per platform or theme (there may be exceptions for proposals which cover different aspects of a specific platform) and get back to the chosen authors by October 31st 2018. At this stage we may ask authors to adjust, narrow or expand their focus a little depending on other proposals. 2. Selected contributors should deliver papers of around 2500 (to a maximum of 4000) words by November 30th 2018. These should be uploaded to the website as any normal submission. See here: http://ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/surveillance-and-society/informatio… Papers will be mutually reviewed by another author in the same issue, so authors will be expected to review one other paper from the issue. This process will be complete by January 14th 2019. Any revisions will be expected by February 7th 2019. Issue publication: February 2019 https://ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/surveillance-and-society/announcem… Torin Monahan, Ph.D. Professor Director of Graduate Studies Department of Communication The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill www.torinmonahan.com<http://www.torinmonahan.com/> Co-Director, Surveillance Studies Network<http://www.surveillance-studies.net/> Editor-in-Chief, Surveillance & Society<http://www.surveillance-and-society.org/> Recent Publications: Monahan, T. 2018. Recommendations on histories of 3 web communities
by Simon Murdoch 30 Sep '18

30 Sep '18

Hi all, Long time subscriber, first-time emailer. I consistently find this list is useful for my work in many unexpected ways, thank you all for this. I am a researcher at HOPE not hate<http://hopenothate.com>, Britain's largest anti-racism and anti-fascism organisation. As part of my work, I am currently researching the histories of three web communities with important ties to the alt-right. If anyone has any recommended reading on any of these three, it would be much appreciated. They are the 'manosphere', the 'reactosphere' or NRx community, and the broader online 'chan culture' associated with 4chan but which has a very broad and preexising scope. Any studies mapping constituent blogs/boards within these communities and their interactions over time would be especially helpful. Thanks again, Simon

by agruzd＠gmail.com 29 Sep '18

29 Sep '18

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND SOCIETY Toronto, Canada (JULY 19-21, 2019) THEME: Rethinking Privacy and Trust in the Social Media Age IMPORTANT DATES Full papers (6-10 pages) Due: Jan. 28, 2019 WIP papers (1000-word extended abstract) Due: Jan. 28, 2019 Panels, Workshops, & Posters Due: Mar. 18, 2019 PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITIES Full papers presented at the Conference will be published in the conference proceedings by ACM International Conference Proceeding Series (ICPS) and will be available in the ACM Digital Library. All conference presenters will be invited to submit their work as a full paper to the special issue of the Social Media + Society journal (published by SAGE). SUBMISSION DETAILS: http://socialmediaandsociety.org/submit/ ABOUT THE CONFERENCE The <http://socialmediaandsociety.org/> International Conference on Social Media & Society (#SMSociety <http://socialmediaandsociety.org/> ) is an annual gathering of leading social media researchers from around the world. Now, in its 10th year, the 2019 conference is being held in Toronto, Canada from July 19 to 21. From its inception, the conference has focused on the best practices for studying the impact and implications of social media on society. Organized by the Social Media Lab <http://socialmedialab.ca/> at Ted Rogers School of Management <https://www.ryerson.ca/tedrogersschool/> at Ryerson University <https://www.ryerson.ca/> , the conference provides participants with opportunities to exchange ideas, present original research, learn about recent and ongoing studies, and network with peers. The conference's intensive three-day program features hands-on workshops, full papers, work-in-progress papers, panels, and posters. The wide-ranging topics in social media showcase research from scholars working in many fields including Management, Communication, Computer Science, Education, Journalism, Information Science, Political Science, and Sociology. CONFERENCE THEME: Rethinking Privacy and Trust in the Social Media Age Can we trust what we hear and see on social media? For a time, social media was viewed as a net positive for society. In their 2013 book, The New Digital Age, Google's Jared Cohen and Eric Schmidt wrote:"Never before have so many people been connected through an instantly responsive network." In 2015, Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder and CEO of Facebook, wrote a glowing endorsement of the internet and social media calling it "a force for peace in the world." He argued that connecting people through social media would help to bring about a "shared understanding" of the human condition and build a "common global community." Fast forward to 2018, social media is now embroiled in a series of ongoing public scandals involving data abuse and misuse-with the most infamous scandal involving the UK data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica. More troubling is fact that social media has emerged as fertile ground for fostering anti-social behaviour and is an important vector for disinformation, misinformation, and manipulation operations. These realities have further raised users' privacy concerns and challenged public trust in social media, which has resulted in a revitalized call for new legislation and regulation. Considering this context, the <http://socialmediaandsociety.org/> International Conference on Social Media & Society invites scholarly and original submissions that explore key questions and central issues related (but not limited) to the 2019 theme of "Rethinking Privacy and Trust in the Social Media Age." We welcome research from a wide range of methodological perspectives employing established quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods as well as innovative approaches that cross interdisciplinary boundaries and expands our understanding of the current and future trends in social media research, especially research that seeks to explore: * What does 'privacy' and 'trust' mean in the social media age? * How can researchers study and operationalize these constructs? * What is the relationship between users' trust in social media platforms, their privacy concerns, and their social media adoption and use? * What are privacy protective technologies that can help to rebuild users' trust in social media? * Can and how AI-based applications help to rebuild trust in social media and improve the credibility of social media content? * How does social media manipulation affect political trust and tolerance? * How is social media being used to help build and strengthen trust in political, economic, social and cultural realms of society? * What roles do alternative social networking services-such as Diaspora, Mastodon, and Gab.ai-play in the current social media environment where hashtag campaigns-such as #DeleteFacebook, #MAGA and #MeToo-have become prevalent? * What theoretical and methodological tools can researchers rely on for ethical and privacy-protective collection, analysis, and sharing of social media datasets? * What are the consequences of data regulations such as GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) on the industry and users? Are these regulations effective? * What are emerging successful user engagement models for governments, journalists, financial institutions, marketers, and others in today's social media landscape? * What is the future of social media research without APIs? * How can we measure authentic (or organic) user engagement while properly accounting for bot-driven (or paid) interactions? * How does algorithmic architecture influence how we discover and interact with others? * What is the role of algorithms played in creating divisive culture in social media? * What are the ethical concerns of algorithms (inclusion, accessibility, discrimination, bots) and how to mitigate them? TOPICS OF INTEREST Social Media Impact on Society * Privacy * Trust & credibility * Political mobilization & engagement * Extremism & terrorism * Politics of hate and oppression * Health and well-being Social Media & Business * Brand communities * Influencer & marketing * Public & customer relations * Cybervetting and HR * Risk management Social Media & Public Sector * Government social media management * Adoption, use, strategies and policies * Trust towards public agencies * Citizens' engagement * Citizens' privacy & security concerns Social Media & Academia * Alternative metrics * Learning analytics * Teaching with social media * University branding Online/Offline Communities * Online community detection * Influential user detection * Identity and anonymity * Case studies Social Media & Mobile * Appification of society * Privacy & security issues in a mobile world * Encrypted messaging apps * Fake news & misinformation Theories & Methods * Qualitative approaches * Quantitative approaches * Mixed methods * Opinion mining & sentiment analysis * Social network analysis * Theoretical models Big & Small Data * Value of small data * Data mining and analytics * Sampling issues * Visualization * Scalability issues ORGANIZING COMMITTEE * Anatoliy Gruzd, Ryerson University, Canada - Conference Chair * Priya Kumar, Ryerson University, Canada - Conference Chair * Philip Mai, Ryerson University, Canada - Conference Chair * Jenna Jacobson, Ryerson University, Canada - Full Paper Chair * Raquel Recuero, Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel), Brazil - Full Paper Chair * Hazel Kwon, Arizona State University, USA - WIP Chair * Jeff Hemsley, Syracuse University, USA - WIP Chair * Anabel Quan-Haase, Western University, Canada - Panel Chair * Luke Sloan, Cardiff University, UK - Panel Chair * Jaigris Hodson, Royal Roads University, Canada - Poster Chair ADVISORY BOARD * Susan Halford, University of Southampton, UK * Caroline Haythornthwaite, Syracuse University, USA * Zizi Papacharissi, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA * Barry Wellman, INSNA Founder, The NetLab Network, Canada
