Teens in Europe were migrating from Facebook to a variety of social media platforms like what's app and Line to avoid their parents' presence (and also lack of prestige, as others on here have mentioned). https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/dec/27/facebook-dead-and-buried… best, Jessika Tremblay On Fri, Sep 28, 2018 at 3:09 AM <air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org> wrote: > Send Air-L mailing list submissions to > air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > air-l-owner(a)listserv.aoir.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Air-L digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Annamari Martinviita Postdoctoral researcher, University of Oulu ************************* Second Call for Papers Interaction and discourse in flux: Changing landscapes of everyday life COACT Conference 2019 University of Oulu, Finland, 24-26 April, 2019 This conference explores how changes in society emerge in interactions and discourses. How do these changes influence, and how are they influenced by, participants in various contexts of work and everyday life? We warmly welcome contributions that outline future trends and present new perspectives on interaction and discourse studies. Presentations may investigate the complexity of different settings, data, methods and theories. We invite papers and posters from different viewpoints, such as: - Methodologies in flux: developing and combining different methods and materials, covering also big data and thick data - Research approaches in flux: reconsidering theories, societal impact of research, researchers' responsibility in engaging in public discourse - Technologies in flux: relationships and interactions with, via and within ubiquitous technologies - Participation in flux: examinations of togetherness, encounters and human sociality in different settings; how access and participation may be redefined, e.g., in working life, education and online environments The theme can be examined from, but is not restricted to, the following research approaches and strategies: action research, activity theory, content analysis, conversation analysis, cultural-historical activity theory, discourse analysis, ethnography, mediated discourse analysis, multimodal interaction analysis, narrative analysis and nexus analysis. The invited keynote speakers address the conference theme from their respective viewpoints: Jon Hindmarsh, King’s College London Teamwork in flux: Interactional practices and new technologies Rodney Jones, University of Reading Negotiating the Right to Look: Power, technology and visability Leena Kuure, University of Oulu Capturing complexity in change: Theoretical and methodological challenges Paul McIlvenny, Aalborg University Staging and inhabiting spatial video and audio data: Towards a scenographic turn in the analysis of complex sites of social interaction and discourse The main language of the conference is English, but presentations in other languages are also welcome. New book: Media dynamics of cultural conflicts in Scandinavia
by Knut Lundby 28 Sep '18

28 Sep '18

AoIR Vice President Lynn Schofield Clark is one of the distinguished scholars offering an international perspective on this study by Norwegian, Danish and Swedish colleagues: CONTESTING RELIGION.The Media Dynamics of Cultural Conflicts in Scandinavia. The book is available open access from www.degruyter.com/viewbooktoc/product/478981<http://www.degruyter.com/viewbooktoc/product/478981> and also as paperback from De Gruyter. It explores conflicts related to religion as they play out in public broadcasting, social media, local civic settings, and schools. It examines how the mediatization of these controversies influences people’s engagement with contested issues about religion, and redraws the boundaries between inclusion and exclusion. Mona Abdel-Fadil’s study of the contested discussion in a Facebook group may be of particular interest to the AoIR community: https://www.degruyter.com/view/books/9783110502060/9783110502060-011/978311… But there are also other chapters of relevance to internet researchers. The book is edited by Knut Lundby, with 16 contributors from the CoMRel project Engaging with Conflicts i Mediatized Religious Environments https://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/research/projects/comrel/index.html ________________________________________________ Knut Lundby Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo <knut.lundby(a)media.uio.no<mailto:knut.lundby@media.uio.no>>

Facebook's class divide - implications
by David Brake 28 Sep '18

28 Sep '18

Dear all, I am writing a piece for The Conversation about the social implications of the recent sharp decline in the use of Facebook in the US by wealthier teens https://qz.com/1355827/do-teens-use-facebook-it-depends-on-their-familys-in…, speculating on the social implications of this shift. I made some conjectures about this but the editors wanted some empirical backup for these if possible, so here are some of the issues I raise - I would be interested if anyone could suggest good references that relate to any of them! * Do we have any idea why wealthy American teens are leaving Facebook? It surprised me since it was wealthier MySpace users who migrated to Facebook in the first place. * Do we have evidence that widespread Facebook use may have helped facilitate inter-cultural or inter-class communication/understanding? I speculate it might because even if FB tends to show you strong tie information, you might still get glimpses of the lives and concerns of people you knew whose lives have taken different paths. If the wealthy leave FB they might lose some of that information and empathy? My second half is about the shift from a textual to a visual ‘culture’ which a move away from FB towards Instagram and Snapchat might represent. * Do we have any quantitative evidence for this shift (eg shortening length of text used in online communication?) * Do we know anything about whether richer/more well-educated people are more effective at getting their message across using social media video and images than poorer? I would argue yes because they have the time and resources to learn and employ editing techniques and use better hardware and software to do so while poorer people might tend just to put out ‘raw’ video. Visible minorities also may find their message sidelined because of their visible lower ’status’. Whereas text is meant to be more of a status leveller than f2f (though of course we know this is not entirely true). Pardon the rant. If there is no good scholarship on some of these points, I will be making the point that more scholarship is needed which may help some of you to get grants ;-) Regards, David -- Dr David Brake, Researcher and Educator http://davidbrake.org/, @drbrake Author of "Sharing Our Lives Online: Risks and Exposure in Social Media” https://www.facebook.com/sharingourlivesonline <https://www.facebook.com/sharingourlivesonline>

CFP: Studying Incidental News: Antecedents, Dynamics and Implications
by Hermida, Alfred 27 Sep '18

27 Sep '18

Please share widely with colleagues. Thank you, Alfred CALL FOR PAPERS: A themed issue of Journalism: Theory, Practice, Criticism Studying Incidental News: Antecedents, Dynamics and Implications Co-editors: Neta Kligler-Vilenchik, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel; Alfred Hermida, University of British Columbia, Canada; Sebastián Valenzuela, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile; Mikko Villi, University of Jyväskylä, Finland Theme rationale and scope The term 'Incidental News' refers to the ways in which people encounter information about current events through digital media when they were not actively seeking the news. The past few years have seen a significant increase in incidental news consumption on digital platforms and social media, accompanied by heightened scholarly attention to the phenomenon. The aim of this issue is to contribute to and develop research on this phenomenon, and its implications on areas such as media consumption habits, journalistic practices, and democratic participation. Research in mass communication and political communication has examined issues related to incidental news consumption since the pioneering work of Downs (1957). Since then, and in particular in relation to the rise of social media, there has been growing interest among scholars related to understanding the causes, dynamics, and consequences of consuming news in an incidental fashion online. The editors invite contributions related to the topic of incidental news, including both rigorous empirical articles (using quantitative, qualitative, computational and/or mixed methods) as well as theoretical articles with conceptualizations and synthesis of relevant literature. Articles should clearly define and delineate their use of the concept incidental news and/or its relation to other concepts used. We are interested in contributions that examine the topic through different methodologies, perspectives (e.g. audiences, texts, media platforms) and contexts. Possible areas of interest include but are not limited to: - Causes and Dynamics of incidental news consumption - Incidental news consumption across different media channels, platforms and devices - Incidental news consumption and journalistic practices - Effects of incidental news consumption - Conceptual elaboration, historical comparison Instructions for contributors and tentative timeline We invite contributors to send a 750 word abstract and an abbreviated author(s) bio describing previous and current research relating to the special issue theme. Please submit proposals to Neta Kligler-Vilenchik at neta.kv(a)mail.huji.ac.il<mailto:neta.kv@mail.huji.ac.il> by November 30, 2018. The abstract should address the relevance of the proposed article to the special issue theme, detail its methodology and the current status of the research. The editors will then notify authors whether they will be invited to contribute a full article by December 30, 2018. Articles should be submitted by April 30, 2019. Note that all invited articles will still go through full and anonymous peer review, and that being invited to submit a full article is no guarantee of final publication in the themed issue.
