My new book is out now!
by Nancy Baym 10 Jul '18

10 Jul '18

Hi all, I'm happy to share the news that my new book, Playing to the Crowd: Musicians, Audiences, and the Intimate Work of Connection is now officially out from NYU Press. I would appreciate your help spreading the word and, if you are so inclined, giving it online ratings. Here is the website for it where you can get a PDF of the introduction and order it direct from the press: https://nyupress.org/books/9781479821587/ Here is its chapter about audiences which was republished today in WIRED: https://www.wired.com/story/book-excerpt-playing-to-the-crowd/ Here is a Spotify playlist I made to go with it so you can hear the music I write about: https://open.spotify.com/user/popgurl/playlist/51Jo8zp4xSF2Ew8xwRZcTz?si=l7… And last but not least, here are the blurbs and an early review: * "Nancy K. Baym's Playing to the Crowd is a major advance in our understanding of new media, music and audiences. Through careful ethnographic and historical work, Baym offers a definitive reception history of popular music as it went online. She also offers a transformative theory of music in the age of social media. Methodologically rich, beautifully written, and full of great storytelling, Playing to the Crowd explains the novel aspects of our emergent online environment, all while linking it to music as a cultural practice that transcends any one context, and insisting that we understand online relationships as fundamentally human relationships. It will change the way you think about music, technology and people." -Jonathan Sterne, author of MP3: The Meaning of a Format * "Nancy K. Baym was researching the impact of emerging technologies and music when most of us did not have the foresight to anticipate the changing music landscape. This is not her first pioneering work, and it certainly won't be her last, but it is, as always, fun and intriguing. An innovative wordsmith and an engaging storyteller, Baym explains how musicians transition from technologies designed to render them remote deities to those that invite them to be irrevocably intimate. Her observations carry weight and her interpretations are timely and timeless. She is a sharp researcher with a curious mind-the type that unfailingly seduces, educates and inspires you with their writing." -Zizi Papacharissi, University of Illinois at Chicago * "Baym's enthusiasm and experience makes this academic study accessible to professional musicians as well as musicology and communication scholars." -Library Journal Thanks! Nancy

CFP CLaw: Legal and Technical Issues in Cloud and Pervasive Computing (IoT)
by Dr C.J. Norval 10 Jul '18

10 Jul '18

======================= Call for papers ====================== CLaw: 4th Workshop on Legal and Technical Issues in Cloud and Pervasive Computing (IoT) www.claw-workshop.org 8 Oct 2018, Singapore in conjunction with Ubicomp (www.ubicomp.org) and ISWC 2018 (www.iswc.net ) ========================================================== *** CLaw takes an interdisciplinary approach to explore the tech-legal challenges of emerging technologies *** We are moving towards realising the broader visions of ubiquitous and pervasive computing, such as smart cities that seamlessly support a vast range of applications. At the same time, we see technology subject to increasing public commentary, political scrutiny and regulatory attention. As a result, existing (and proposed) regulatory and governance regimes place obligations on those who manage (process, use and collect) data; a high-profile example is the EU General Data Protection Regulation. In many cases, the end-users of applications have certain ‘rights’ that must be respected—and those developing, providing, offering and using technology bear various degrees of responsibility, which must be properly managed. Managing these rights and responsibilities is becoming increasingly complex, both technically and legally. Many of the challenges stem from the increasingly, composite, automated, dynamic and often opaque nature of technology and its supporting ecosystems. The challenges are set to increase, as computing becomes increasingly pervasive and ubiquitous, and as visions of smart cities and the IoT become a reality. Building on the successes of the previous workshops, CLaw 2018 aims to facilitate an interdisciplinary exploration of the technical and legal challenges as regards emerging technology, with a particular focus on its increasingly pervasive and ubiquitous nature. =========================================================== The key goal of this workshop is to stimulate a multidisciplinary discussion and new directions on these important issues. As such, we welcome a wide range of submissions, whether technical, legal or thought pieces to stimulate debate. Note that for those technically-oriented - fully implemented and evaluated systems are not essential, and application-specific papers are welcome. All accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Some suggested topics, in no particular order, include: * Considerations re the sensing/collection, storage and management of personal data * Technical approaches for managing legal obligations (privacy, user rights, SLAs, government access, …) * Accountability, audit and proof of compliance with regulation * Transparency in pervasive computing environments * Compatibility issues between regulation and technical implementation * The interplay of sensors, cloud, privacy and surveillance * Privacy and security in ubiquituous and cloud computing environments * Forensics and investigation (failures, security breaches) * Emerging cloud technologies (decentralised clouds: cloudlets, droplets; containment mechanisms) * Implications of fog and edge computing * Emerging cloud and infrastructure service models (X as a Service) * Issues relating to big data, analytics and machine learning * Data localisation: from centralisation to regional data stores (data stays in country X) to personal data stores (data stays at 'home') to micro-data stores (per-device). * Liability and safety aspects of automated systems and actuation * Encryption, security technologies and responsibility * Machine learning, profiling and analytics considerations * Distributed analytics and machine learning * Usability, interfaces, and the tech-legal implications * Fairness, anti-discrimination, human rights, privacy and power issues regarding emerging technology * Interaction between cloud and IoT and consumer-facing business models * Fairness, anti-discrimination, human rights, privacy and power issues regarding emerging technology * Application / sector specific considerations; e.g. wellness, healthcare, finance, law enforcement Important dates * Paper submission: 22 Jul 2018 * Author notification: 8 Aug 2018 * Final camera ready: TBD * Workshop date: 8 Oct 2018 Submissions: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=claw2018 For further details, including formatting instructions, please see http://www.claw-workshop.org/

CFP: Spectator (Small Media and Everyday Life: Digital Media Beyond Big Data)
by Anirban Kapil Baishya 09 Jul '18

09 Jul '18

Hello All, I am currently editing an issue of *Spectator*, University of Southern California, Cinema and Media Studies Division's journal ( http://cinema.usc.edu/mediastudies/spectator/index.cfm) The issue is titled "Small Media and Everyday Life: Digital Media Beyond Big Data". Please find the CFP pasted below: *Call for Papers* *Small Media and Everyday Life: Digital Media Beyond Big Data* *Volume 38.2 and Fall 2019* Contemporary discussions on digital media and its effects often tend to focus on “big data” as the primary locus of conversation. Such discussions tend to range from the uncritical embracement of the possibilities of big data in areas such as the advertising and entertainment industries, to doomsday scenarios of surveillance and privacy risks under the increasing interconnections between corporate and state structures. This focus on big data structures often tends to overlook the numerous smaller changes that have taken place in social and communication practices with the advent of digital media. Such changes involve the emergence of “smaller” media forms that integrate themselves into practices of everyday life through routinized usage and habit. One caveat here: “smaller” media is not a judgment on the scale of the media, or their structural complexity, but rather serves as a pointer to the forms of their adoption and adaptations that elude the “big” sweep of corporate and state structures. While such media may indeed be produced by corporations and conglomerations, they may be used in unintended and even subversive ways by their target audiences. This issue of *Spectator* dedicates itself to such forms of adaptations, repurposing and habit that run counter to the utilitarian motivations behind the production and distribution of media forms. How have digital media affected our contemporary conversation styles, both online and offline? In what ways has the integration of network communication devices in everyday life changed our experience of urban spaces? How have online shopping portals and apps changed our practices as consumers? What is the impact of new media on contemporary forms of religiosity and faith-practices? What changes in film and televisual media consumption have taken place with the emergence of both legal streaming options, and underground access through torrent-sites and illegal streaming? This issue is also interested in works that look media practices beyond the West, especially those that diverge from seemingly “normative” uses of media through re-assemblage and tactical usage. Works that interrogate digital media forms through an integration of theory and practice are also encouraged. *Deadline for Submission: November 27, 2018* *Spectator* is a biannual publication and submissions that address the above topics in the following areas are now invited for submission. *Possible topics* include, but need not be limited to: - *Social media, cellphones and conversation style* - *Navigation Apps and everyday life in the city* - *“Binge watching” and the new spectator/cinephile.* - *Dating Apps and digital intimacy* - *Sexting, Camsites and digital-smut* - *Digital Media and the organization of protests* - *Social media and virtual communities* - *Habit, routine and the new-media ecology* - *Digital Media, Space and Temporality* - *Surveillance and self-tracking practices* - *Digital technology and health* - *Smart technology, domesticity and the “connected home”* Include your contact information - Name - Address - Phone - E-mail Manuscripts to be considered for publication should be sent to: Anirban K. Manuscripts should include the title of the contribution and the name(s) of authors. As well as the postal address, e-mail address, and phone numbers for author who will work with the editor on any revisions. All pages should be numbered consecutively. Contributions should not be more than 5,000 words. Please include a brief abstract for publicity. Authors should also include a brief biographic entry. Articles submitted to the Spectator should not be under consideration by any other journal. Book Reviews may vary in length from 300 to 1,000 words. The Audience and Business of YouTube and Online Videos
by Louisa Shu Ying Ha 09 Jul '18

09 Jul '18

Dear AOIRs: I am pleased to announce the release of my new edited book: “The Audience and Business of YouTube and Online Videos.” Use LEX30AUTH18 as the 30% discount code when ordered online at https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781498576482/The-Audience-and-Business-of-YouTube-… Below is a blurb for your reference. If you are interested in reviewing the book, please contact me directly. The book will be available at the AEJMC Conference in Washington DC this August. This book is a thorough analysis of digital natives as YouTube audiences as well as creators of online videos. Using a mixed method approach, the authors examine the underexplored business side of YouTube: its audience in the form of product review videos, comments on videos, YouTube and other social media and online video services such as Netflix and Hulu, brand videos, sponsored videos and online video advertising. It will also be the first book that examines YouTube Red (now called YouTube Premium) and other YouTube services such as subscription, pay TV, and movie services. YouTube is conceptualized as a global video portal and the go-to video encyclopedia and demonstration site for the online generation. Although general media attention has focused on the most popular channels and the YouTube influencers, this book calls for audience empowerment through active input to the metrics that determine the algorithm of YouTube’s video recommendation system and identify the weakness of the chase of the most viewed videos which facilitates sensationalism and star power. The availability of both professional and user-generated content on YouTube is what made YouTube so special. The boundary between amateur content and professional content diminishes as popular YouTubers are cultivated and professionalized by YouTube and its intermediary networks to be star producers and influencers. YouTube’s diverse ecosystem and its global audiences and video creators are facilitating the formation of a global village where we see people in other countries in action without censorship. Different organizations, including governments, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, media organizations, and businesses, set up their YouTube channels to reach national and foreign audiences. YouTube is the only global platform that can accommodate so many videos from all over the world. Instead of facilitating a participatory culture that past YouTube research emphasized, this book presents YouTube as the cultivator of a promotional and entrepreneurial culture through its open policy to various individuals and organizations to promote themselves through posting and sharing videos. YouTube is part of the online video industry. The online video audience behavior revealed and analyzed in the book lays the foundation for future research on online video audiences. Table of Contents 1. YouTube as a Global Online Video Portal and an Alternative to TV 2. Users and Non-users of YouTube and Online Video Services 3. What Do Digital Natives Watch on YouTube 4. How Digital Natives Watch Online Videos: Digital Divide and Media Devices 5. YouTube Product Review Videos as eWOM 6. Comments on YouTube Product Review Videos 7. YouTube and Other Social Media 8. Brand Videos on YouTube 9. Sponsored Videos on YouTube 10. Online Video Advertising Viewership and Avoidance on YouTube 11. Most Popular YouTube Channels 12. Is YouTube Red the Ultimate Viewing Experience and What is the Future of Online Video Audience Research? CFP: Understanding the social in a digital age (correct years)
by Zoetanya Sujon 09 Jul '18

09 Jul '18

This one contains the correct dates (my apologies for repetition and cross-posting) *Understanding the social in a digital age: **An interdisciplinary conference on media, technology, and the social* The pervasiveness of social media has led to both the rise and erasure of ‘the social’. The social is increasingly evasive, at once found everywhere and nowhere. Social media are widely lauded for connecting people and enabling richer, more dynamic socialities yet many critique these processes as emptying out social connection in favour of data accumulation, self-promotion, and platform capitalism. Similarly, these new ways of experiencing, augmenting, and understanding the social are rife with their own socio-cultural and socio-economic biases, born out through designers and users, meaning not every user experiences these spaces and relates to these technologies in the same manner. It becomes apparent that ‘the social’ presumes a singular experience, when realities are far more diverse. Current research on social media draws in an interdisciplinary manner from a wide range of thinking on what the social means, and is increasingly challenging extant theories and conceptions of the social. This poses a number of questions for how we consider, define, and explore the social, and crucially what our responsibilities are as researchers and educators. This also poses a number of opportunities to work across disciplinary boundaries to explore and reframe our understandings of media, technology, and the social. *Keynotes will be given by Professor Nick Couldry, London School of Economics and Professor Gina Neff, Oxford Internet Institute.* This event aims to critically examine not only the meanings of the social in contemporary digital practices across cultures, but also challenges underlying epistemologies of the social in research and popular cultures. Papers may approach the topic from theoretical, conceptual, and/or empirical positions. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: · Challenges of and negotiations around agency and structure · The relationship between technology, self, and society · Educational challenges and responsibilities in the digital age · Changing socialities in the face of platform capitalism, the sharing economy, the gig economy, the rise of mediation, & networked selves · The embedding and disembedding of socio-cultural resources online · Resistance and transgression on, in, with, and through technology · The role of designers, users, researchers and the public in the framing, conceptualisation, and representation of ‘the social’ online · Extant and emerging social structures in the digital age · Boundaries between online and offline social practices · Affordances and mediation of social practices · Alternative media and sub-altern communities · Technological mediation of public / private · Digital citizenships and the politics of belonging · Emerging technologies and digital futures This list is merely suggestive of the range of topics of interest to the organisers and is not in any way restrictive of possible interpretations of the theme. We encourage contributors to be imaginative in formulating ideas and paper proposals. Abstracts of no more than 300 words and a short bio of 100 words should be submitted via email by *28th August 2018. * You will receive notification of the outcome of your submission by September 30.
