Participations: Journal of Audience and Reception Studies has just released its latest issue! This particular issue coves a wide array of issues and questions: on top of its usual selection of articles focusing on participatory audiences, this open-access journal features two themed sections and a debate and response article. In the first themed section, "Toxic fan practices", a collection of 13 articled, including an extended foreword by Matt Hills, consider trolling practices, the circulation of alt-right memes, the "puppygate" controversy, heternormativity in Harry Potter fandom, and the pleasure of spoiling. The second special themes includes four articles on documentary audiences, featuring works on truth claims in a post-truth era, activism in action, and a critical analysis of documentaries in VR environments. Furthermore, this issue contains articles on cinema-going as practice, *Cinéma Verité*, social media and participatory television production, and the Shanghai International Film Festival. Including works from a variety of scholars from all around the world, Participations has once again brought together diverse perspectives and approaches into the study of media reception. Dear community, I'd be grateful to receive some good advice. I’ll be teaching an undergraduate course on social media and would like to hear some recommendations on books (manuals) and articles to build my syllabus. I’d also appreciate any suggestions of film segments, videos, or analytical tools to use in class assignments. Thank you, _______________________________ Teresa Gil-Lopez PhD Candidate, Communication University of California, Davis tgillopez(a)ucdavis.edu (530)746-1688

CfP: CIKM 2018 Workshop on Rumours and Deception in Social Media
by Arkaitz Zubiaga 02 Jul '18

02 Jul '18

--------------------------- Call for Papers ---------------------------------------------- 2nd International Workshop on Rumours and Deception in Social Media (RDSM) co-located with CIKM 2018 October 22, 2018 in Turin, Italy https://www.pheme.eu/rdsm2018/ **Submission Deadline: 15th July, 2018** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ AIMS AND SCOPE -------------------------- The 2nd edition of the RDSM workshop will particularly focus on online information disorder and its interplay with public opinion formation. Information disorder has been categorised into three types: (1) misinformation, an honest mistake in information sharing, (2) disinformation, deliberate spreading of inaccurate information, and (3) malinformation, accurate information that is intended to harm others, such as leaks. The spread of this information can play an important role in shaping public opinion, as well as the formation of public opinion can feed back into the production and sharing of information disorder. The challenges posed by online information disorder and its ability to shape public opinion has evoked the occurrence of important political phenomena of worldwide impact in recent events. This is the case of recent political events such as Brexit and Trump’s election, where social media played a significant role in shaping public opinion and issues now known as “fake news” and “post-truth” had an impact that is yet to be understood. It is a fact that social media is an excellent resource of mining all kind of information varying from opinions to actual facts. However, it is also fact that not all pieces of information are reliable and thus their truth is highly questionable. One such category of information types are rumours where the veracity level is not known at the time of posting. Although rumours can be true many of them are classified as false and such false rumours are a powerful tool used to manipulate public opinion. It is therefore very important to detect and verify false rumours before they are spread and influence the public opinion. In this workshop the aim is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in social media mining and analysis to deal with the emerging issues of rumour veracity assessment and manipulation of public opinion. TOPICS OF INTEREST -------------------------------- Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Detection and tracking of rumours. * Rumour veracity classification. * Fact-checking social media. * Detection and analysis of disinformation, hoaxes and fake news. * Stance detection in social media. * Qualitative user studies assessing the use of social media. * Bots detection in social media. * Measuring public opinion through social media. * Assessing the impact of social media in public opinion. * Political analyses of social media. * Real-time social media mining. * NLP for social media analysis. * Network analysis and diffusion of dis/misinformation. SUBMISSION ------------------- We solicit full research papers (5-10 pages), and short papers (2-4 pages) both in the ACM camera-ready templates: http://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template Please use sample-sigconf.tex as the template but removing the authors during submission. Full papers cannot exceed 10 pages in length and short papers cannot exceed 4 pages in length, including all references and appendices. But election meddling is only one aspect of this growing phenomenon. From Mexico to Egypt and Vietnam, human rights organizations, journalists, activists and opposition groups have been targeted by digital attacks. How can civil society defend itself against such threats? The DATACTIVE project (University of Amsterdam) invites you to hear from leading experts on questions of digital espionage, cybersecurity and the protection of human rights in new technological environments. This public event aims to provide a global view of digital threats to civil society and discuss what can be done to fight back. Ron Deibert (University of Toronto) will present the work of the Citizen Lab, which has pioneered investigation into information controls, covert surveillance and targeted digital espionage of civil society worldwide. He will be in conversation with Seda Guerses (KU Leuven) and Nishant Shah (ArtEZ University of the Arts/Leuphana University). Ronald Deibert is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto. Seda Guerses is an FWO post-doctoral fellow at COSIC/ESAT in the Department of Electrical Engineering at KU Leuven, Belgium. She works at the intersection of computer science, engineering and privacy activism, with a focus on privacy enhancing technologies. She studies conceptions of privacy and surveillance in online social networks, requirements engineering, software engineering and algorithmic discrimination and looks into tackling some of the shortcomings of the counter-surveillance movements in the US and EU. Nishant Shah is the Dean of Graduate School at ArtEZ University of the Arts, The Netherlands, Professor of Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media at Leuphana University, Germany, and the co-founder of the Centre for Internet & Society, India. His work is informed by critical theory, political activism, and equality politics. He identifies as an accidental academic, radical humanist, and an unapologetic feminist, with particular interests in questions of life, love, and language. Critical/opinion papers/articles on user engagement
by Lior Zalmanson 02 Jul '18

02 Jul '18

Hello, I'm teaching a seminar on "Understanding User Engagement" and while most studies will be more empirical work on the nature of online user behavior, I want to encourage discussions around critical notions of user engagement, social media, and online participation. I would love any recommendations you might have. Of course, I've added thinkers such as Lovink and Lanier, but I'm looking for as many points of view as possible, representing an array of cultures, genders, etc. They don't have to be academic journal papers. Articles in Wired/Atlantic and similar publications will be even better. Looking forward and thank you in advance, Dr. Lior Zalmanson, Assistant Professor Dept. of Information and Knowledge Management University of Haifa, Israel
