Interaction between users and computers occurs at the User Interface (UI). Now, computers become pervasive, they are embedded in everyday things and UIs are the main value-added competitive advantages. UIs should be more natural for users. NUI (natural user interface) expands forms beyond formal input devices like the mouse and keyboard to more and more natural forms of interaction such as touch, speech, gestures, handwriting, and vision. Unlike speech, handwriting and vision, which have been researched for decades and put into practical use recently, touch and gestures are interaction tasks related, and yet lack of study. This talk will introduce methods of modeling user input action based on data with the random noise for fast touch input and natural gestures. - Robots that listen to people's hearts: the role of emotions in the communication between humans and social robots, by Prof. Ana Paiva, University of Lisbon, Portugal - Running Recommendations: Personalisation Opportunities for Health & Fitness by Prof. Barry Smyth, University College Dublin, Ireland Abstract: The history of personalisation and recommender systems is, in large part, a web-tale: a story of sites and services that learn about users, in order to provide more tailored experiences. The rapid rise of mobile computing, combined with wearable sensors, and an increasingly connected IoT world, has begun to shift the potential for personalisation, from the virtual world of the web, to the physical world in which we live, work, and play. This talk will consider exciting new application opportunities for user modelling, personalisation, and recommendation in the area of personal health and fitness, with a particular emphasis on how these technologies can help people to exercise more effectively, and by drawing from recent results for marathon runners.

Hi Kat Nili Steinfeld and myself just publised a piece in Social Science Computer Review analyzing activity in Facebook groups dedicated to "miscarriage of justice" campaigns calling for justice for (arguably) innocent people who were wrongly convicted. Social media constitute useful and effective platforms for miscarriage of justice campaigners to challenge state authorities and decisions taken by the criminal justice system. To characterize such endeavors, this study analyzes the activity in such a major group dedicated to the murder case of Tair Rada and the trial of Roman Zadorov, one of the most controversial legal cases in Israel’s history. Using digital data extraction and linguistic analysis tools, we focus on five themes: (1) the central role of group administrators in directing the discourse and setting the group agenda; (2) correspondence of group activity with off-line events and mainstream media coverage; (3) skewed distribution of post publications per user and engagement measures per post; (4) prominent topics in group discussions, revolving around key figures, institutions and officials, making justice, considering alternative theories and examining investigative and forensic materials; and (5) the framing of key figures, institutions, and values in portraying a somewhat dichotomous image of a corrupted justice system, an innocent man wrongly convicted and a Facebook group in the search for the truth. Dear All, the Bavarian Ministry of Science and the Arts is going to fund five new junior research group leaders for young postdocs (requirement: excellent PhD degree, "excellent achievements in research and teaching, based on an excellent publication record (quality and originality), awards and honours, third party funding, collaborations, etc.") to establish an independent research group working on "innovative projects with high practical impact" in the wider field of digitalisation research (see link). Reminder Call for Papers: The International Symposium on Media Innovations 2018 (ISMI18) - Deadline 31 May Theme: Media Innovations and Good Lives Dear list members, we are pleased to announce that the seventh International Symposium on Media Innovations (ISMI18) will take place in Oslo, Norway on Friday 31st August and Saturday 1st September, 2018. Join us, along with a small group of international academic researchers and industry representatives, to discuss how innovations are developed in, influence, and transform contemporary media. We will discuss innovation and change in media technologies and services, organisational structures and management, and policies. We will also focus on questions relating to media production, journalism, media consumption and use. The theme for ISMI18 is ‘Media Innovations and Good Lives’. Software or tool for video analysis, forum-scraping

Dear all, I am a PhD candidate in Science, technology, society at UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal) as well as the coordinator of a research infrastructure we are putting in place to study the use of digital technologies and medias through thick data approaches. As such, we plan to have a lot of video data - wether on field or at the lab - and we are looking for a software or a tool that would help us analyze this data. Basically, we are looking for something where we could annotate the video (something like NVivo but better suited for video) while integrating other layers of data (ex. the verbatim of the interview), possibly by synchronizing these layers together (if that is possible). We were wondering if such a tool might exist, and if yes, what might be some of your suggestions? We are also planning to have data extracted from social media, web sites or forums. About the forums, we were wondering if there was any tool (like a web-scraper maybe?) that could help us extract publications/conversations automatically through some filters? These technologies include features on social media sites such as Facebook Live, standalone smartphone apps (e.g., Periscope), and websites dedicated to live streaming, such as the gaming platform Twitch.tv. Although live streaming has been possible for many years (e.g. Senft, 2008), the evolution of recording devices, data transfer speeds, mobile apps, and other digital technologies has contributed to a recent proliferation of live media. Live platforms encourage spontaneous sharing but controversial incidents raise questions about what should be shared in a live context. Live streaming game platforms showcase modes of self-presentation and self-promotion (Consalvo & Altizer, 2017), which social media influencers also adopt when broadcasting content to adoring fans (Abidin, 2016). Gamers and influencers alike benefit from the commercialization of these practices, generating revenue from brand promotion and boosting attention to advertisements. Clearly, live streaming and live digital technologies have social, political, economic, and cultural impacts. However, research into these areas is still developing and there have been few opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars researching live streaming. We invite you to tackle these topics with us at this pre-conference workshop, taking place at Concordia University’s cutting-edge Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology. The day will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. T.L. Taylor, Professor of Comparative Media Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Taylor is an internationally recognized scholar in game studies, having written field-defining books about online games, the rise of competitive esports, and the business of live streaming. Watch our website for additional speaker announcements as we finalize our schedule. The day will also include paper sessions for presenting and receiving feedback about works-in-progress. --------------------------- Call for Papers ---------------------------------------------- 2nd International Workshop on Rumours and Deception in Social Media (RDSM) co-located with CIKM 2018 October 22, 2018 in Turin, Italy https://www.pheme.eu/rdsm2018/ **Submission Deadline: 15th July, 2018** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ AIMS AND SCOPE -------------------------- The 2nd edition of the RDSM workshop will particularly focus on online information disorder and its interplay with public opinion formation. Information disorder has been categorised into three types: (1) misinformation, an honest mistake in information sharing, (2) disinformation, deliberate spreading of inaccurate information, and (3) malinformation, accurate information that is intended to harm others, such as leaks. The spread of this information can play an important role in shaping public opinion, as well as the formation of public opinion can feed back into the production and sharing of information disorder. The challenges posed by online information disorder and its ability to shape public opinion has evoked the occurrence of important political phenomena of worldwide impact in recent events. This is the case of recent political events such as Brexit and Trump’s election, where social media played a significant role in shaping public opinion and issues now known as “fake news” and “post-truth” had an impact that is yet to be understood. It is a fact that social media is an excellent resource of mining all kind of information varying from opinions to actual facts. However, it is also fact that not all pieces of information are reliable and thus their truth is highly questionable. One such category of information types are rumours where the veracity level is not known at the time of posting. Although rumours can be true many of them are classified as false and such false rumours are a powerful tool used to manipulate public opinion. It is therefore very important to detect and verify false rumours before they are spread and influence the public opinion. In this workshop the aim is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in social media mining and analysis to deal with the emerging issues of rumour veracity assessment and manipulation of public opinion. TOPICS OF INTEREST -------------------------------- Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Detection and tracking of rumours. * Rumour veracity classification. * Fact-checking social media. * Detection and analysis of disinformation, hoaxes and fake news. * Stance detection in social media. * Qualitative user studies assessing the use of social media. * Bots detection in social media. * Measuring public opinion through social media. * Assessing the impact of social media in public opinion. * Political analyses of social media. * Real-time social media mining. * NLP for social media analysis. * Network analysis and diffusion of dis/misinformation. SUBMISSION ------------------- We solicit full research papers (5-10 pages), and short papers (2-4 pages) both in the ACM camera-ready templates: http://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template Please use sample-sigconf.tex as the template but removing the authors during submission. Full papers cannot exceed 10 pages in length and short papers cannot exceed 4 pages in length, including all references and appendices.
