CfP iCS Symposium on Challenges to Studying Disinformation (27-28 October 2018), The IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark
by Mercea, Dan 26 Jun '18

26 Jun '18

Dear All, We are happy to announce the keynote speakers at our upcoming iCS symposium (27-28 October 2018, IT University of Copenhagen). They are: Axel Bruns (Queensland University of Technology), Lina Dencik (University of Cardiff), Claes de Vreese (University of Amsterdam), Katrin Weller (GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences). Call for Papers: Locked out of Social Platforms: An iCS Symposium on Challenges to Studying Disinformation (27-28 October 2018), The IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark Deadline for abstracts: 31 July 2018. Abstracts/biographies/contact details should be sent to dan.mercea.1(a)city.ac.uk. A selection of papers presented at the symposium will be published in a special issue of the journal Information, Communication & Society (iCS). More info: https://blogit.itu.dk/ics2018/. After years of exalting rhetoric praising the democratisation of public discourse with the diffusion of the internet, informed observers have sounded a note of alarm about the scope for the distortion of electoral processes in democratic countries. The Brexit campaign, along with recent elections in the US and France have been linked to disinformation, misinformation or propaganda campaigns seeking to strategically diffuse content that heightens partisanship and erodes the general trust in democratic institutions. In the run-up to the 2018 US mid-term elections, the aftermath of the Irish abortion referendum and the Italian general elections, this two-day symposium aims to address the topical question of how independent, ethical research on dis/misinformation in political communication can be conducted in a corporate environment that favours platform 'lockdowns' and the throttling of API access in response to the strategic use of data analytics, bots, trolls, fake news, and dis/misinformation operations in electoral politics, public information campaigns, and activist communication. What are the challenges for independent academic research examining these developments? How can researchers investigate disinformation in a context of narrowing access to trace data? How can these challenges be met, and what meaningful ways can be imagined for making social media platforms more accountable to the democratic constituencies where they operate? How is such disruptive communication designed, executed, with what effects and how are these measured? What data policies can be envisaged to strike a balance between safeguarding privacy and enabling academic research into the impact dis/misinformation or propaganda campaigns have on social media and beyond, in the attitudes and behaviours of their users? We encourage submissions that address but are not limited to the following aims: * reflect on the structural and contextual factors that have acted as fertile ground for dis/misinformation and propaganda; * determine the scope and intricacies of dis/misinformation and propaganda campaigns; * explore the relationship between dis/misinformation and the polarization of public opinion; * consider the weaponization of social media platforms and discuss the interdependencies among the vast plurality of newsmakers operating in the current hybrid media ecosystem; * reflect on the political, cultural or socio-economic costs of distortive communication, the relevance of such research to industry and public policy and the ethical implications attendant to such studies; * untangle technological design choices and ideological leanings that shape platform communication, enable dis/misinformation and propaganda and their bearing on independent research; * examine the implications for academic research of controlled access by private owners of data produced in public communication spaces such as the Facebook page of a political candidate, and methodological solutions for sustaining the investigation of these topics; * consider the changing social media research landscape as the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force in May 2018; We invite 500-word abstracts outlining empirical, theoretical or policy-orientated papers that address these or cognate topics. Abstracts should be accompanied by a 100-word biography of the presenter(s) together with contact details.

CFP CLaw: 4th Workshop on Legal and Technical Issues in Cloud and Pervasive Computing (IoT)
by Dr C.J. Norval 26 Jun '18

26 Jun '18

======================= Call for papers ====================== CLaw: 4th Workshop on Legal and Technical Issues in Cloud and Pervasive Computing (IoT) www.claw-workshop.org 8 Oct 2018, Singapore in conjunction with Ubicomp (www.ubicomp.org) and ISWC 2018 (www.iswc.net ) ========================================================== *** CLaw takes an interdisciplinary approach to explore the tech-legal challenges of emerging technologies *** We are moving towards realising the broader visions of ubiquitous and pervasive computing, such as smart cities that seamlessly support a vast range of applications. At the same time, we see technology subject to increasing public commentary, political scrutiny and regulatory attention. As a result, existing (and proposed) regulatory and governance regimes place obligations on those who manage (process, use and collect) data; a high-profile example is the EU General Data Protection Regulation. In many cases, the end-users of applications have certain ‘rights’ that must be respected—and those developing, providing, offering and using technology bear various degrees of responsibility, which must be properly managed. Managing these rights and responsibilities is becoming increasingly complex, both technically and legally. Many of the challenges stem from the increasingly, composite, automated, dynamic and often opaque nature of technology and its supporting ecosystems. The challenges are set to increase, as computing becomes increasingly pervasive and ubiquitous, and as visions of smart cities and the IoT become a reality. Building on the successes of the previous workshops, CLaw 2018 aims to facilitate an interdisciplinary exploration of the technical and legal challenges as regards emerging technology, with a particular focus on its increasingly pervasive and ubiquitous nature. =========================================================== The key goal of this workshop is to stimulate a multidisciplinary discussion and new directions on these important issues. As such, we welcome a wide range of submissions, whether technical, legal or thought pieces to stimulate debate. Note that for those technically-oriented - fully implemented and evaluated systems are not essential, and application-specific papers are welcome. All accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Some suggested topics, in no particular order, include: * Considerations re the sensing/collection, storage and management of personal data * Technical approaches for managing legal obligations (privacy, user rights, SLAs, government access, …) * Accountability, audit and proof of compliance with regulation * Transparency in pervasive computing environments * Compatibility issues between regulation and technical implementation * The interplay of sensors, cloud, privacy and surveillance * Privacy and security in ubiquituous and cloud computing environments * Forensics and investigation (failures, security breaches) * Emerging cloud technologies (decentralised clouds: cloudlets, droplets; containment mechanisms) * Implications of fog and edge computing * Emerging cloud and infrastructure service models (X as a Service) * Issues relating to big data, analytics and machine learning * Data localisation: from centralisation to regional data stores (data stays in country X) to personal data stores (data stays at 'home') to micro-data stores (per-device). * Liability and safety aspects of automated systems and actuation * Encryption, security technologies and responsibility * Machine learning, profiling and analytics considerations * Distributed analytics and machine learning * Usability, interfaces, and the tech-legal implications * Fairness, anti-discrimination, human rights, privacy and power issues regarding emerging technology * Interaction between cloud and IoT and consumer-facing business models * Fairness, anti-discrimination, human rights, privacy and power issues regarding emerging technology * Application / sector specific considerations; e.g. wellness, healthcare, finance, law enforcement Important dates * Paper submission: 22 Jul 2018 * Author notification: 8 Aug 2018 * Final camera ready: TBD * Workshop date: 8 Oct 2018 For further details, including formatting and submission instructions, please see http://www.claw-workshop.org/

Digital Intimacies 4: abstracts close JUNE 30
by Tama Leaver 25 Jun '18

25 Jun '18

Dear Colleagues, Just a reminder that *abstracts close June 30 for Digital Intimacies 4*. Please consider joining us for what promises to be a very exciting event. See details below, and please share widely! All best wishes, Amy Dobson and Tama Leaver *Digital Intimacies 4: Porousness & Permutations* *December 5**, 6 & 7, Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia* Digital Intimacies is now in its fourth year and continues to bring scholars of digital culture together from across Australia and beyond, across disciplines including media and communication, cultural studies, sociology, and gender studies. This year’s symposium is convened by Amy Dobson and Tama Leaver, and is hosted by Curtin University’s Centre for Culture and Technology and the discipline of Internet Studies in the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry. As social media open up intimate lives and practices to public and semi-public gazes, we are in the midst of important cultural contestations over the meaning of intimacy. How intimacy plays out in, and in relation to, the digital has become a prominent concern in scholarship of digital cultures, as well as in broader public debate. Intimacy is generally understood as to do with the ‘personal’ and with ‘closeness’ — as describing feelings or relationships that are most ‘inward to one’s personhood’ (McGlotten, 2013). But, as much queer and social theory tells us, intimacy is also socially and culturally constructed and sanctioned, defined by institutions, laws, and social and cultural norms and practices. Norms around various kinds of intimacies and intimate practices involving media increasingly play out online, and via social media platforms. Digital platforms are structured by a ‘like’ economy (Gerlitz and Helmond, 2013), by drives towards the quantification of self (Lupton, 2016), and algorithms, as well as algorithmic ‘imaginaries’ (Bucher, 2018; Carah and Angus 2018). Digital intimacy has been described in this context as a new kind of social capital (Lambert, 2016), as well as new media ‘genre’ (Raun, 2018). Practices of certain kinds of intimacies via the digital are increasingly seen as vital to ‘successful’ and economically productive use of social media, especially for cultural intermediaries and ‘internet celebrities’ (Abidin, 2018). Simultaneously, many forms of intimacy and communication are being encoded, aggregated, analysed and commercialized as forms of big data, provoking difficult and unsettling questions about new forms of surveillance, influence, and control, as well as distinct lack of transparency around new practices and forms of governance, made publicly visible around recent Cambridge Analytica scandals (Andrejevic, 2013; Leaver, 2017). We are calling for paper abstracts on the themes of digital media, digital cultures, and intimacy, with particular interest in porousness and permutations of every kind; that is, papers that map the flow between boundaries – shifts and permeations of practice and understanding towards new forms, new configurations, and the unsettling existing norms in unexpected and as yet unnamed ways. Within these broadly understood boundaries of digital culture(s) and digital intimacies we invite particular exploration of: * how existing structures, boundaries and norms of intimacy are constituted, reconstituted and made porous in terms of identities, practices and platforms; * how practices of intimacy via the digital can be challenged, changed and new permutations emerge in terms of the social, cultural, and political; * how ‘digital disruption’ (of various sorts) shapes, configures, constitutes and impacts intimacy of every kind. The single stream symposium will formally run for two days, December 5 and 6. Following the successful implementation at last year’s symposium, an optional third day for more focused workshopping, writing, and project planning, driven by the intersections made visible during the two conference days, will be available of December 7th for those who wish to participate. *Keynote speakers:* *Professor Jessica Ringrose,* University College London; *Associate Professor Shaka McGlotten*, Purchase College, State University of New York. Please submit *abstracts of 250-300 words to **digitalintimacies(a)gmail.com* <digitalintimacies(a)gmail.com>* by June 30, 2018*. We will send notifications of acceptances out by the end of July. We are hoping to make this a low-cost event, especially for students, but there will be a small registration fee to cover costs. *Details at **https://digint18.tumblr.com/cfp* <https://digint18.tumblr.com/cfp> Tama Leaver BA(Hons) (W.Aust) PhD (W.Aust) Associate Professor & Internet Studies Discipline Lead School of Media, Creative Arts & Social Inquiry Curtin University GPO Box U1987 Perth, WA 6845, AUSTRALIA. Call for Papers - ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency
by danah boyd 22 Jun '18

22 Jun '18

Hi y'all! FAT* is an interdisciplinary ACM conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency. The 2019 conference will be held in Atlanta in Jan or Feb or 2019. (I'm co-general-chairing it.) Rooted in computer science (this conference emerged out of a conference focused on machine learning), there are multiple tracks for different CS sub-disciplines, but we are also seeking papers across the social scientific, legal, and humanistic perspectives. There are two tracks dedicated to these - one on empirical research on FAT topics and one rooted in policy/critical analysis methods. While papers at FAT* can be archival, you can also have the opportunity to treat this as a workshop and submit your paper for publication elsewhere. I'd love to see amazing research from this community presented at FAT*2019 so I want to invite you to submit a paper. Papers (8-10 pages, due August 23) are double-blind peer reviewed and published in conference proceedings in the ACM Digital Library if you'd like. (As mentioned you can also opt for non-archival submission, but are still subject to the same rigorous review process.) Please forward this call to other people or groups you think may be interested. I am very excited by how this conference has started to bridge different conversations and I'm excited that we'll be able to take it to the next level this year! For more details, see https://fatconference.org/2019/cfp.html <https://fatconference.org/2019/cfp.html> danah
