Reminder - CFP for Going Live AoIR pre-conference
by Stefanie Duguay 18 Jun '18

18 Jun '18

Hi folks - Just a reminder that the Call for Papers for our AoIR pre-conference "Going Live: Exploring Live Digital Technologies and Live Streaming Practices" closes on June 29, 2018. Please send your abstract (250 words) and bio (50 words) to goingliveconf(a)gmail.com before then! Thank you! (full CFP below) Call for Papers and Participants Going Live: Exploring Live Digital Technologies and Live Streaming Practices October 10, 2018 9:00am - 4:30pm (registration from 8:30am) Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology Concordia University 1515 rue Sainte-Catherine W EV Building, 11.455 Montreal, Quebec, Canada H3G 2W1 Organizers: Dr. Mia Consalvo & Dr. Stefanie Duguay, Concordia University Website: https://goingliveconf.wixsite.com/goinglive As a pre-conference event affiliated with the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) annual conference, this full-day workshop will bring together game studies scholars and social media researchers to discuss the increasing popularity of live digital technologies. These technologies include features on social media sites such as Facebook Live, standalone smartphone apps (e.g., Periscope), and websites dedicated to live streaming, such as the gaming platform Twitch.tv. Although live streaming has been possible for many years (e.g. Senft, 2008), the evolution of recording devices, data transfer speeds, mobile apps, and other digital technologies has contributed to a recent proliferation of live media. Live platforms encourage spontaneous sharing but controversial incidents raise questions about what should be shared in a live context. Live streaming game platforms showcase modes of self-presentation and self-promotion (Consalvo & Altizer, 2017), which social media influencers also adopt when broadcasting content to adoring fans (Abidin, 2016). Gamers and influencers alike benefit from the commercialization of these practices, generating revenue from brand promotion and boosting attention to advertisements. Clearly, live streaming and live digital technologies have social, political, economic, and cultural impacts. However, research into these areas is still developing and there have been few opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars researching live streaming. We invite you to tackle these topics with us at this pre-conference workshop, taking place at Concordia University's cutting-edge Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology. We encourage participation from a range of scholars, from graduate students to early career researchers and established academics. If you are an AoIR member, you must register through the AoIR conference website to reserve your place. If you are not an AoIR member or if you are not attending the AoIR conference, please register through our website <https://goingliveconf.wixsite.com/goinglive>. The day will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. T.L. Taylor, Professor of Comparative Media Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Taylor is an internationally recognized scholar in game studies, having written field-defining books about online games, the rise of competitive esports, and the business of live streaming. Watch our website for additional speaker announcements as we finalize our schedule. The day will also include paper sessions for presenting and receiving feedback about works-in-progress. We invite abstracts from scholars researching live streaming and live digital technologies across a range of topics, including but not limited to: - Gaming and esports - Platform infrastructures, algorithms, and automation - Communities, practices, and audiences - Microcelebrity and self-branding - Political economies and labour - Ephemeral and everyday media - Data, policy, privacy, and governance - Transnational liveness Selected presenters will have the chance to submit their work-in-progress papers prior to the workshop for circulation to attendees. If you are interested in presenting, please submit an abstract of 250 words along with your name, title, affiliation and a brief bio (50 words) to goingliveconf(a)gmail.com by June 29, 2018. Ecologies of Internet Video: Beyond YouTube (new book)
by John Hondros 18 Jun '18

18 Jun '18

Dear colleagues, Some of you may be interested in my newly published book, Ecologies of Internet Video: Beyond YouTube, which is part of Routledge’s Research in Cultural and Media Studies series. The book explores the complex, dynamic, and contested webs of relationships in which three different groups of video makers found themselves when distributing their work on the Internet. It draws upon both the Deleuzian notion of "assemblage" and Actor-Network Theory, which together provide a rich conceptual framework for characterizing and analysing these webs. The groups examined are a UK video activist project, a community of film and television fans originating in the US, and an association of US community television producers. Rather than taking YouTube as its point of departure, the book centres on the groups themselves, contextualizing their contemporary distribution practices within their pre-Internet histories. It then follows the groups as they drew upon various Internet technologies beyond YouTube to create their often-complex video distribution assemblages, a process that entangled them in these webs of relationships. Through the analysis of detailed ethnographic fieldwork conducted across a period of several years, this book demonstrates that while the groups found some success in achieving their various goals as video makers, their situations were often problematic and their agency limited, with their practices contested by both human and technological actors within their distribution assemblages. More information on the book is available here: https://www.routledge.com/Ecologies-of-Internet-Video-Beyond-YouTube/Hondro… <https://www.routledge.com/Ecologies-of-Internet-Video-Beyond-YouTube/Hondro…> Dr John Hondros School of Media, Film and Music University of Sussex

Call for Panel - Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) 2019
by Camille . 15 Jun '18

15 Jun '18

Dear all, The usual apology for cross-posting but this may be of interest to some on the list. Call for Panels CPDP2019 – Data Protection and Democracy This call for panels is aimed at academic consortia, research projects, think tanks and other research organisations. (Another call, to individuals for academic research papers, will go out towards mid June 2018) The overarching theme of the 2019 edition is "Data Protection and Democracy". The Cambridge Analytica exposé reminded the world once again that data protection is vitally important for the health of our democracies. It thus protects not only the individual but also the core values and the common good. The GDPR has gone into effect on May 25 and is expected to change how companies and governments handle personal information. With growing user backlash after the recent privacy debacle, will the GDPR serve as a model for a new standard of data privacy around the world? Will the new data protection and privacy frameworks in Europe and elsewhere make a difference? Could they be effectively enforced? What is data protection beyond legislation? CPDP2019 will highlight data protection as a core element of a democratic society. We welcome cutting edge panels in all areas related to technology, privacy and data protection, but particularly invite proposals that fit the general conference theme. We encourage panels that are well-balanced, multidisciplinary and geographically and gender diverse. More information about rules for panel composition and submission can be found here: http://www.cpdpconferences.org/callforpanels.html Please note: chosen institutions, organisations or EU research projects will become CPDP2019 event partners. This implies that the event partner is able to finance all costs of the panel speakers (travel and lodging) in addition to paying a conference contribution of €1200. In return, the event partner’s logo will be visibly displayed on the CPDP website and the programme brochure. The partner will also have the option of putting a flyer or advertisement in the conference bag. All panelists will get free registration for the three conference days. Organizations such as nonprofits for whom the panel fee would cause financial hardship can get in touch after submitting their panel proposal. Panel proposals should be submitted through the online form at: http://www.cpdpconferences.org/callforpanels.html#form Please fill in the form as completely as possible. Key Dates Final panel submission/suggestion: Thursday, 21st June 2018 Notification sent to panel proposers: Thursday, 12th July 2018 Panel organisation finalised: Friday, October 19th, 2018 Dates of CPDP2019: 30th January to 1st February, 2019 Contact If you have an innovative idea for the set up of a panel or workshop or have any questions regarding potential panel topics, please contact the organisers at info(a)cpdpconferences.org<mailto:info@cpdpconferences.org> Best wishes, Camille on behalf of the CPDP2019 Programme Committee Camille Van Puymbroeck Communication & Community Manager Privacy Salon and CPDP Join us for the next edition of the CPDP conference on 30th January - 1st February in Brussels: http://www.cpdpconferences.org/
