Software for collecting info from e.g. facebook?
by Nina Lasek 11 Jun '18

11 Jun '18

Dear all, this is the first time that I (dare to) post something here - it would be great if someone might help me out. Specifically, it seems to be rather straightforward to combine certain facebook graph search commands to build complex queries. For example, I found out that people who are named "Ronny" and who like the the AfD Sachsen Anhalt - a regional chapter of a german right-wing political party- might be identified using this syntax https://www.facebook.com/search/str/ronny/users-named/363842953730453/liker… OK, so facebook will deliver a number of results. But the results from this syntax are presented in facebook itself, and it is tedious to scroll down the page time and again in order to get an overview over the resuts. So how can I store these results e.g. as a .csv or json file? Isn't there any useful software available to conduct such syntax-driven request and to systematically store the results ? Best, Nina

CfP: Designing learning for high-impact, high stakes distance contexts (IJDL Special Issue)
by Tonia A. Dousay 11 Jun '18

11 Jun '18

o you design instruction or learning environments for high-stakes/high-impact distance or online learning environments? Then we have a publication opportunity for you! The *International Journal of Designs for Learning *( https://scholarworks.iu.edu/journals/index.php/ijdl/index) is a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed online journal dedicated to publishing descriptions of artifacts, environments and experiences created to promote and support learning in all contexts by designers in any field. AECT's Division of Distance Learning is sponsoring a special issue of IJDL dedicated to online and distance design cases that detail the key moments in the design process for learning with high-stakes/high-impact implications. These contexts often have regulated initial and continuing education requirements that require special considerations. For some, the length of the learning experience must meet minimum requirements or be accessible offline only. For others, the content may be particularly sensitive, requiring a delicacy with respect to content presentation not often encountered in other learning designs. Common learners who experience these designs include emergency responders, active duty military, incarcerated populations, medical professionals, crisis counselors, classified security personnel, and utility and public works employees. This special issue will be guest edited by Dr. Tonia A. Dousay, University of Idaho (tonia(a)uidaho.edu) For the full call for proposals, including how design cases differ from traditional publications, visit http://bit.ly/IJDL18. *Important Deadlines* - July 15, 2018 Deadline to submit 250-word abstract to http://bit.ly/IJDL-DDL - August 01, 2018 Notification of abstract acceptance - September 15, 2018 Deadline to submit full/brief paper - November 15, 2018 Notification of paper acceptance and revisions - December 15, 2018 Final manuscripts due - February 2019 Projected publication -td- Tonia A. Call for Submissions: DATASET CHALLENGE at the 2nd European Symposium on Societal Challenges in Computational Social Science
by Weller, Katrin 11 Jun '18

11 Jun '18

2nd European Symposium on Societal Challenges in Computational Social Science: BIAS AND DISCRIMINATION --------------------------- DATASET CHALLENGE - CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS ----------------------------- Euro CSS Symposium #eurocss December 5-7, 2018 Cologne, Germany Website: http://symposium.computationalsocialscience.eu Easychair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=csssymposium18 For inquiries: css.eurosymposium(a)gmail.com<mailto:css.eurosymposium@gmail.com> ----------------------------- IMPORTANT DATES ----------------------------- * Deadline for abstract submissions to the dataset challenge: September 1, 2018 * Deadline for travel grant applications: September 1, 2018 * Notification of acceptance: September 15, 2018 * Pre-conference day (incl. dataset challenge presentations): December 5, 2018 * Main Symposium: December 6-7, 2018 Please watch out for our additional calls for * main symposium contributions (talks/posters) * workshop and tutorials * phd consortium (forthcoming) ------------------------------------------------------ ABOUT THE DATASET CHALLENGE ------------------------------------------------------ For the first Dataset Challenge as part of our European Symposium on Societal Challenges in CSS, we invite researchers and practitioners from the spectrum of Social and Computational Sciences to approach a common dataset. The aim of this challenge is to encourage creative engagement with data from pluralistic perspectives in order to foster dialogue across disciplines. We envision that this challenge will lead to fruitful, in-depth discussions during the symposium, as participants will have a shared basis through interaction with the dataset(s), but varying ideas of where to go with it. The research questions and methods applied to the dataset(s) can be drawn from the broad spectrum of Computational Social Science. They should ideally be related to this year's symposium topic 'bias and discrimination' and approach new ways of learning about bias, be it by putting forward new research designs and questions, or by applying state-of-the-art methods to identify data patterns that can inform theory building. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Comparisons of user/political actor behaviour * Unequal structures and political action * Biases in Web data * Missing data * Coverage bias on different platforms / through different collection methods We ask participants of the dataset challenge to be creative in their approach to the data. The work presented at the symposium can be early stage, but should be methodically sound and provide either preliminary insights into an interesting research question or first inductively-reached conclusions of systematic patterns of bias in the dataset. These can also be on a meta-level or may be designated to positioning the work in broader theoretical contexts, e.g., about biases in the data collection. We especially invite inventive combinations with other datasets (e.g., digital trace data, survey data, multimedia data, multilingual data, data from other case studies). Submissions selected by our review committee will be presented in a special dataset challenge session at the pre-symposium day (December 5, 2018). A jury will select the best presentation (including any created resources, such as secondary datasets or analysis code) to be awarded the very first Euro CSS Dataset Challenge Award. ------------------------------------------ SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ------------------------------------------ Extended abstracts of work in progress or completed projects based on the suggested dataset(s) should be submitted in English in PDF format via the EasyChair submission system: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=csssymposium18 Submissions should be abstracts of approx. 2-3 pages (maximum up to 1000 words plus references and figures). The abstract submissions will be evaluated based on originality and the potential to stimulate interesting discussions, but should also consider the feasibility of the proposed idea. Please consider that reviewers will be from an interdisciplinary community, therefore describe your ideas, approaches and potential complementary datasets in sufficient detail. Deadline for submissions to the dataset challenge is September 1, 2018. The final work will be presented at the symposium. Please see the website for additional information on how to apply for travel grants. ------------------------------------------ THE DATASETS ------------------------------------------ The provided datasets all relate to the topic of political communication in Germany, particularly around the German federal election which took place in September 2017. Participants of the challenge should make use of one or more of the main datasets listed below and are encouraged to combine them or compare them among each other. Additional datasets listed on the website may also be used, as well as any other datasets of the participants' choice (qualitative, quantitative, textual, multimedia, etc.). Main Datasets (participants must choose at least one of these): [1] Algorithmwatch's user-donated search results dataset for the German Federal Elections 2017. Personalized search results when looking up political topics. [2] Abgeordnetenwatch.de - All members of the German parliaments and their votes, description of vote contents and much more metadata. [3] Social media content generated by candidates during the German federal election 2017 and resonance with their follower-base. Please see our website for detailed information about the datasets: http://symposium.computationalsocialscience.eu/2018/#data. It also lists further auxiliary Datasets. ------------------------------------------ FAQ / ASSISTANCE ------------------------------------------ For any questions related to technical aspects, data structure and especially German language that might come up with these datasets, please do not hesitate to contact us! Please feel free to use our Google Group / mailing list 'CSSnet' for discussions about the dataset challenge, for looking for potential collaborations, or to ask questions to the community: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/cssnet Specific questions can also be sent to us directly at css.eurosymposium(a)gmail.com<mailto:css.eurosymposium@gmail.com>. --- Dr. Katrin Weller GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences Dept. Reminder: CfP Symposium Dis/Connection: Conflicts, Activism and Reciprocity Online and Beyond, Sept 27-28, Uppsala University, Sweden
by Magdalena Kania Lundholm 11 Jun '18

11 Jun '18

-------Apologies for crossposting--------- Dear Colleagues, Here comes the final reminder about the symposium organized by The Cultural Matters Group at the Department of Sociology, Uppsala University on Sept. 27-28 this year. The symposium is called Dis / Connection: Conflicts, Activism and Reciprocity Online and Beyond and we look forward to receiving your papers! Deadline for submissions is next week- June 18, 2018. The symposium focuses on a fundamental aspect of social relationships, namely the idea of connection. We invite abstract submissions on the possibilities of connectivity, but also the problems and promises of the act of disconnection. Digital networks embedded in everyday lives have transformed virtually every aspect of social life – from intimate relations with family and friends to the collective acts of digital activism. Digital relations and connections are our starting point for a broader discussion of notions of connectivity and how they are developing, failing, or simply being reproduced. Therefore, we also focus on the idea of disconnection as a voluntary act to take control over one’s use of digital technologies, as an act of resistance and of saying no to the opaque structures of power and control in the networked society. The goal is to further the discussion on the gains, costs and possibilities of ethical life in the culture of hyperconnectivity. The symposium also aims to address destructive functions of connected living, such as surveillance, trolls, selfies, fake news, fake news accusations, sexual harassment, click baiting, commercialism, terrorism, viruses, spam, and the colonization of private life. In other words, we are interested in how connectivity and disconnectivity can give rise to and facilitate social inclusion and democratic processes, as well as exclusion, isolation and conflict. Confirmed keynote speakers: Annette Markham (Aarhus University and Loyola University) Adam Fish (Lancaster University). Artist Mako Ishizuka will put her thoughts on the themes of the symposium into a mind-map on site, in dialogue with the symposium participants. For more information please see: http://soc.uu.se/forskning/forskargrupper/cultural-matters-group/dis-connec… Papers could address but are not limited to the following themes: * What is ‘connectivity’ and how can we analyze it? * Sexism, peer pressure and online harassment * Digital activism / hacktivism * Bad connection – communication networks gone awry * The digital underclass – outsourced journalists, click farm and troll factory workers, and networking refugees * “Someone is very wrong on the internet” – risk, edgework, and the rise of the internet as a polarized political space * Digital afterlives and post-humanism * Digital intimacies * Online radicalization and extremism * Epistemic enclosures (so called “Google Bubbles”) and the future of representative democracy * The colonization of attention and attention economy * The self promotion video as a technique of the self * 1337 h4x0rz * Politicians’ tweets, dick picks, inappropriate tagging and other downsides of being connected * Analog relationships offline – embodied relationships between humans (and other animals) as a way to opt out of the digital * Voluntary disconnection Abstract submission and fees: The symposium will be free of charge, including coffee and a dinner in the evening of the 27thSeptember. The number of participants is limited. Please submit your abstract to disconnection(a)soc.uu.se<mailto:disconnection@soc.uu.se> together with your name, affiliation and contact details. Use the same address for queries, and if you want to attend the conference without presenting a paper. Abstracts should not exceed 250 words. You will be notified concerning your participation in the beginning of July. Deadline for submissions is June 18, 2018. We’ re looking forward to receiving your papers! Postdoc position Russian Media Lab - University of Helsinki - 10 days left to apply
by Mariëlle W. 08 Jun '18

08 Jun '18

Second call for applications: apply by 18.06.2018 The Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki invites applications for an enthusiastic and creative POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER <https://www.helsinki.fi/en/open-positions/postdoctoral-researcher-russia-me…> for a fixed term from 3rd of September 2018 to 30th of June 2019, to work within the project 'Russia MediaLab: Freedom of speech and critical journalism in Russia'. The employment contract will include a trial period of six months. If measured according to conventional parameters, freedom of speech and expression in Russia has deteriorated. However, such development is not uncontested and without contradictions. Instead, actions and measures taken can prove inefficient or have unintended outcomes, which can be either negative or positive in terms of freedom of speech. Likewise, freedom of speech can also unintentionally shrink due to reasons such as the strained economic situation or increasing commercialization. To formulate a fuller picture of freedom of speech in Russia today, it is therefore not enough to study measures of control and questions of implementation, but also to adopt the opposite perspective – that is, to study freedom of speech and expression from the perspective of the areas of relative freedom. See: http://blogs.helsinki.fi/russianmedialab. Potential candidates can approach the subject matter from several different perspectives: - Media regulation and self-regulation - Legislation and media - Media culture and -politics - Russia’s political culture and media - Media economy - Cultural institutions The subject matter can be approached from the angle of different humanities or social science disciplines. A strive for multidisciplinarity and willingness to partake in interdisciplinary discussions are appreciated. According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, the appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field, have the ability to conduct independent scientific research and possess the teaching skills required for the position. The candidate should have a proven capability to publish in scientific journals, have excellent analytical and methodological skills, and be able to work both independently and as a part of a multidisciplinary scientific community. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent skills in written and oral English, as well as have a good command of Russian. The salary for the position will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. The starting gross salary of a post-doctoral researcher is around 3180 € per month, depending on the qualifications and experience of the applicant. Applications must be accompanied by the following English-language documents submitted as a single pdf file: - CV (max. 3 pages) - list of publications (max. 3 pages) - 1–2 page summary of the applicant’s motivation to join the Russia MediaLab -project and the scientific community of the Aleksanteri Institute - innovative research plan concerning freedom of speech and expression in Russia (max. 5 pages) - sample of academic writing (max. 10 000 words) - contact information of 2– 3 referees Please submit your application through the University of Helsinki Recruitment System <https://www.helsinki.fi/en/open-positions/postdoctoral-researcher-russia-me…>. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to submit their application via the SAP HR portal. The deadline for applications is June 18th 2018. Applications will be evaluated by a preparatory commission, consisting of representatives of different disciplines. The applicants will be informed about the choices by e-mail within two months from the application deadline. Further information about the position may be obtained from Director of the Project, Professor Markku Kangaspuro, tel. +358 50 5223393, markku.kangaspuro(a)helsinki.fi.
