Call for Papers: CODE A Media Conference of Platforms, Devices and Screens
by Esther Milne 12 Jun '18

12 Jun '18

Dear Colleagues, CALL FOR PAPERS: CODE A Media Conference of Platforms, Devices and Screens Swinburne University Melbourne, AUSTRALIA 19-20 November 2018 Keynote Speakers: *John Cheney-Lippold, University of Michigan (author of _We Are Data: Algorithms and the Making of our Digital Selves_ NYU Press, 2017). *Anna Munster, University of New South Wales (author of _An Aesthesia of Networks_ MIT Press, 2013). For contemporary media studies in the so called age of social media, the role of data has never been more complex. At the inaugural CODE conference six years ago, a collective of digital media academics and creative practitioners were negotiating the rapid emergence of new platforms and devices, and exploring new approaches to theorising, researching and doing digital media. Under the banner of software studies, platform politics, and digital media practice, the first CODE conference interrogated the multifaceted nature of code itself. At that stage, we only had an inkling of the coming impact of algorithms, automation, natural language processing, machine learning and neural nets, and the new wave of artificial intelligence. The time has come to take stock of our data streams. And, in particular, to ask how the notion of code, both materially shaped and conceptually understood, helps to orient media studies in 2018. CODE: A Media Conference of Platforms, Devices and Screens is a two day event consisting of workshops, studios, industry panels and papers. There are lots of opportunities to participate but specifically now we are seeking short research snapshots or provocations of five minutes. We are keen to move away from the old broadcast model of conference format with its death by PowerPoint approach. Instead, we want to hear about research plans, projects, methods, tools or critical perspectives. Whether it's an idea looking for partners, or the report from a project just completed, we encourage you to submit your work. Possible topics could include but are not limited to: *Automation and work futures *The ethics of algorithms *Data visualisation and the shifting boundaries of public and private life *Screen estate and making meaning *The literacies and uses of data analytics *Second screen and new audience measurements *New developments in machine learning *What is data driven media studies? *New screen texts: aesthetics and forms of the digital age (eg VR, the TVIV era) *On-demand screen cultures *Curatorial culture and the classificatory imagination *Shifting boundaries of screen performance (eg motion and performance capture) *Cultural heritage and GLAM industries *Pedagogies of code *Digital making and maker culture *Digital archives, archaeologies, and histories *****Preliminary Schedule***** DAY 1: MONDAY 19 NOVEMBER OPENING KEYNOTE KEYNOTE FORUM 10 min responses to the keynote RESEARCH SNAPSHOTS & PROVOCATIONS Five minute presentations from attendees DAY 2: TUESDAY 20 NOVEMBER WORKSHOP: Methods for ECRs and PhD students WORKSHOP: Data literacies PANEL: DECRA applications INDUSTRY FORUM PANEL: Screen research and practice PANEL: Concepts, methods, keyworks CLOSING KEYNOTE KEYNOTE FORUM 10 min responses to the keynote *****Submission Guidelines***** Please submit proposals for individual (up to 500 words) or collaborative presentations (up to 2,000 words) by Friday 29 June 2018 to: codeconference(a)swin.edu.au Proposals must contain the following information: Name(s) of presenter; email address; brief bio; five keywords. analytical tools for emojis, textual expressions of emotions?
by Charles M. Ess 11 Jun '18

11 Jun '18

Dear AoIRists, one of our MA students is exploring the role of diverse emotions - first of all, anger - in responses to news stories on three major Norwegian news sites. The broad hypothesis is that anger will be most prevalent and effective in catalyzing further response (including sharing, likes, etc.) - but four emotions total are taken on board: sadness, anger, surprise, and happiness. 1) There is an online tool available for analyzing the emotive content of texts - "The SATI API enables to perform Sentiment Analysis from Textual Information", etc. Comments and observations on its utility, validity? 2) Recommendations, please, for either useful examples of similar research, especially with a view towards methods of accumulating and then analyzing emoticons, and/or other suggestions regarding possible tools? Many thanks in advance, - charles ess -- Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/people/aca/charlees/index.html> Postboks 1093 Blindern 0317 Oslo, Norway c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no

The symposium is called Dis / Connection: Conflicts, Activism and Reciprocity Online and Beyond and we look forward to receiving your papers! Deadline for submissions is next week- June 18, 2018. The symposium focuses on a fundamental aspect of social relationships, namely the idea of connection. We invite abstract submissions on the possibilities of connectivity, but also the problems and promises of the act of disconnection. Digital networks embedded in everyday lives have transformed virtually every aspect of social life ? from intimate relations with family and friends to the collective acts of digital activism. Digital relations and connections are our starting point for a broader discussion of notions of connectivity and how they are developing, failing, or simply being reproduced. Therefore, we also focus on the idea of disconnection as a voluntary act to take control over one?s use of digital technologies, as an act of resistance and of saying no to the opaque structures of power and control in the networked society. The goal is to further the discussion on the gains, costs and possibilities of ethical life in the culture of hyperconnectivity. The symposium also aims to address destructive functions of connected living, such as surveillance, trolls, selfies, fake news, fake news accusations, sexual harassment, click baiting, commercialism, terrorism, viruses, spam, and the colonization of private life. In other words, we are interested in how connectivity and disconnectivity can give rise to and facilitate social inclusion and democratic processes, as well as exclusion, isolation and conflict. Confirmed keynote speakers: Annette Markham (Aarhus University and Loyola University) Adam Fish (Lancaster University). Artist Mako Ishizuka will put her thoughts on the themes of the symposium into a mind-map on site, in dialogue with the symposium participants. For more information please see: http://soc.uu.se/forskning/forskargrupper/cultural-matters-group/dis-connec… Papers could address but are not limited to the following themes: * What is ?connectivity? and how can we analyze it? * Sexism, peer pressure and online harassment * Digital activism / hacktivism * Bad connection ? communication networks gone awry * The digital underclass ? outsourced journalists, click farm and troll factory workers, and networking refugees * ?Someone is very wrong on the internet? ? risk, edgework, and the rise of the internet as a polarized political space * Digital afterlives and post-humanism * Digital intimacies * Online radicalization and extremism * Epistemic enclosures (so called ?Google Bubbles?) and the future of representative democracy * The colonization of attention and attention economy * The self promotion video as a technique of the self * 1337 h4x0rz * Politicians? tweets, dick picks, inappropriate tagging and other downsides of being connected * Analog relationships offline ? embodied relationships between humans (and other animals) as a way to opt out of the digital * Voluntary disconnection Abstract submission and fees: The symposium will be free of charge, including coffee and a dinner in the evening of the 27thSeptember. The number of participants is limited. Please submit your abstract to disconnection(a)soc.uu.se<mailto:disconnection@soc.uu.se> together with your name, affiliation and contact details. Use the same address for queries, and if you want to attend the conference without presenting a paper. Abstracts should not exceed 250 words. You will be notified concerning your participation in the beginning of July. Deadline for submissions is June 18, 2018. We? re looking forward to receiving your papers! Closing date: 19 June 2018 King?s College London is in the third year of making a significant investment in the Department of Digital Humanities as part of an ambitious programme of growth and expansion in existing and emergent research areas and student numbers across its five MA programmes and the BA Digital Culture. We are seeking to recruit exceptional candidates to join the Department no later than 1st September, who can enthuse and inspire our students, and contribute to the life and reputation of the Department. The Department of Digital Humanities is an international leader in the research of digital theories and practices in the arts and humanities and related social sciences. King's College London has a long tradition of research in the Digital Humanities, going back to the early 1990s. King's is one of the few places in the world where students at all levels can pursue a wide range of inter-disciplinary study of the digital. Digital Humanities is trying to expand the opportunities for scholars in the relatively new fields of digital culture, digital humanities and digital economy and society. With the support of King?s College, we are therefore able to offer multiple career-developing Teaching Fellowships in these areas. Please, note that we are looking for multiple posts with at least one appointment in each of the areas below. We are hiring for * Teaching Fellow in Digital Humanities and Heritage:https://www.hirewire.co.uk/HE/1061247/MS_JobDetails.aspx?JobID=79203<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hire…> * Teaching Fellow in Digital Media and Culture:https://www.hirewire.co.uk/HE/1061247/MS_JobDetails.aspx?JobID=79198<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hire…> * Teaching Fellow in Digital Economy and Society:https://www.hirewire.co.uk/HE/1061247/MS_JobDetails.aspx?JobID=79204<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hire…> ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2018 11:39:54 +0200 From: florian hadler <flohadler(a)gmail.com> To: Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] INTERFACE CRITIQUE JOURNAL: Initial volume out now Message-ID: <CAFJesTK4kr-1k6ihpMVRgtXu4f05c+0fs1aXxd3TeuB5dXcx3A(a)mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" *Initial Volume* The initial volume of *Interface Critique Journal* is now available as open access and print. The aim of this challenge is to encourage creative engagement with data from pluralistic perspectives in order to foster dialogue across disciplines. We envision that this challenge will lead to fruitful, in-depth discussions during the symposium, as participants will have a shared basis through interaction with the dataset(s), but varying ideas of where to go with it. The research questions and methods applied to the dataset(s) can be drawn from the broad spectrum of Computational Social Science. They should ideally be related to this year's symposium topic 'bias and discrimination' and approach new ways of learning about bias, be it by putting forward new research designs and questions, or by applying state-of-the-art methods to identify data patterns that can inform theory building. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Comparisons of user/political actor behaviour * Unequal structures and political action * Biases in Web data * Missing data * Coverage bias on different platforms / through different collection methods We ask participants of the dataset challenge to be creative in their approach to the data. The work presented at the symposium can be early stage, but should be methodically sound and provide either preliminary insights into an interesting research question or first inductively-reached conclusions of systematic patterns of bias in the dataset. These can also be on a meta-level or may be designated to positioning the work in broader theoretical contexts, e.g., about biases in the data collection. We especially invite inventive combinations with other datasets (e.g., digital trace data, survey data, multimedia data, multilingual data, data from other case studies). Submissions selected by our review committee will be presented in a special dataset challenge session at the pre-symposium day (December 5, 2018). A jury will select the best presentation (including any created resources, such as secondary datasets or analysis code) to be awarded the very first Euro CSS Dataset Challenge Award. ------------------------------------------ SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ------------------------------------------ Extended abstracts of work in progress or completed projects based on the suggested dataset(s) should be submitted in English in PDF format via the EasyChair submission system: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=csssymposium18 Submissions should be abstracts of approx. 2-3 pages (maximum up to 1000 words plus references and figures). The abstract submissions will be evaluated based on originality and the potential to stimulate interesting discussions, but should also consider the feasibility of the proposed idea. Please consider that reviewers will be from an interdisciplinary community, therefore describe your ideas, approaches and potential complementary datasets in sufficient detail. Deadline for submissions to the dataset challenge is September 1, 2018. The final work will be presented at the symposium. Please see the website for additional information on how to apply for travel grants. ------------------------------------------ THE DATASETS ------------------------------------------ The provided datasets all relate to the topic of political communication in Germany, particularly around the German federal election which took place in September 2017. Participants of the challenge should make use of one or more of the main datasets listed below and are encouraged to combine them or compare them among each other. Additional datasets listed on the website may also be used, as well as any other datasets of the participants' choice (qualitative, quantitative, textual, multimedia, etc.). Main Datasets (participants must choose at least one of these): [1] Algorithmwatch's user-donated search results dataset for the German Federal Elections 2017. Personalized search results when looking up political topics. [2] Abgeordnetenwatch.de - All members of the German parliaments and their votes, description of vote contents and much more metadata. [3] Social media content generated by candidates during the German federal election 2017 and resonance with their follower-base. Please see our website for detailed information about the datasets: http://symposium.computationalsocialscience.eu/2018/#data. It also lists further auxiliary Datasets. ------------------------------------------ FAQ / ASSISTANCE ------------------------------------------ For any questions related to technical aspects, data structure and especially German language that might come up with these datasets, please do not hesitate to contact us! Message-ID: <web-98227729(a)cgp2.pu.ru> Content-Type: text/plain;charset=utf-8; format="flowed" **Apologies for cross-posting** Dear AoIR members, this is a friendly reminder that the dealdine for the 5th Internet Science conference (INSCI'2018) is approaching! The conference in St.Petersburg, Russia, is gathering academics, policymakers, and industry representatives to discuss digital freedoms and user empowerment in various regions of the world. The 2018 deadline has been extended to June 15. With all the recent controversies, we consider Russia to be a hot spot for discussing these topics. Springer LNCS series is publishing the INSCI proceedings, and we will also publish a special issue of Media and Communication (SJR Q2) in the aftermath. Please see the full info on insci2018.org - see 'Proceedings' for submission instructions. Hoping for your participation, INSCI'2018 team ------------------------------ Message: 10 Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2018 09:00:30 -0700 From: "Tonia A. Then we have a publication opportunity for you! The *International Journal of Designs for Learning *( https://scholarworks.iu.edu/journals/index.php/ijdl/index) is a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed online journal dedicated to publishing descriptions of artifacts, environments and experiences created to promote and support learning in all contexts by designers in any field. AECT's Division of Distance Learning is sponsoring a special issue of IJDL dedicated to online and distance design cases that detail the key moments in the design process for learning with high-stakes/high-impact implications. These contexts often have regulated initial and continuing education requirements that require special considerations. For some, the length of the learning experience must meet minimum requirements or be accessible offline only. For others, the content may be particularly sensitive, requiring a delicacy with respect to content presentation not often encountered in other learning designs. Common learners who experience these designs include emergency responders, active duty military, incarcerated populations, medical professionals, crisis counselors, classified security personnel, and utility and public works employees. This special issue will be guest edited by Dr. Tonia A. Dousay, University of Idaho (tonia(a)uidaho.edu) For the full call for proposals, including how design cases differ from traditional publications, visit http://bit.ly/IJDL18. *Important Deadlines* - July 15, 2018 Deadline to submit 250-word abstract to http://bit.ly/IJDL-DDL - August 01, 2018 Notification of abstract acceptance - September 15, 2018 Deadline to submit full/brief paper - November 15, 2018 Notification of paper acceptance and revisions - December 15, 2018 Final manuscripts due - February 2019 Projected publication -td- Tonia A.
