Public Seminar: ‘Jobs in the Data Industrial Complex: Four Stories from the Field’
by Scott Rodgers 05 Jun '18

05 Jun '18

Jobs in the Data Industrial Complex: Four Stories from the Field Professor Vicki Mayer, Tulane University Friday 8 June 2018, from 6pm School of Arts, Birkbeck, University of London 43 Gordon Square Room B04 London WC1H 0PD Register here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/jobs-in-the-data-industrial-complex-four-sto… Abstract What Would Google Do? This is the question that government managers, educational administrators, and business leaders have pondered for nearly twenty years of data center development and innovation marketing in Groningen, the Netherlands. In 2014, this question became public when Google formally announced it would expand there by building its largest data center in Western Europe. Since then, I have been following the stories of Google’s coming. In this talk, I offer the infrastructural prehistory of these cloud dreams, followed by three perspectives on what Google does. This event is part of Data Materiality<http://www.publiclysited.com/data-materiality-collaborative-birmacvasari-pr…>, a three-year collaborative project co-sponsored by the Birkbeck Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Media and Culture<http://www.bbk.ac.uk/birmac/>, and the Vasari Centre for Art and Technology<http://www.bbk.ac.uk/vasari/>.

Hi listers, The European Journalism Centre is crowdsourcing advice on crowdsourcing. If you've worked on a crowdsourcing project, be it for research, journalism, or something else, we would love to hear about your experience. We're particularly interested in the answers to the following questions: - how did your approach towards crowdsourcing contribute to the project's success? - If you could go back in time and do something differently, what would it be? - if you faced any challenges, specifically in relation to crowdsourcing, what were these and how did you overcome them? Thanks! CfP: The Web that Was: Archives, Traces, Reflections (Amsterdam, June 2019)
by Michael Stevenson 05 Jun '18

05 Jun '18

The Web that Was: Archives, Traces, Reflections A three-day conference, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, June 19-21, 2019. The third biennial RESAW (Research Infrastructure for the Study of Archived Web Materials) conference. Organized by the University of Amsterdam. *** Keynote speakers *** Megan Ankerson, University of Michigan Florian Cramer, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences Olia Lialina, Merz Akademie Fred Turner, Stanford University *** Special event *** The conference will host a lecture-performance by Geert Lovink (Institute of Network Cultures, Hogeschool van Amsterdam) and guests on the history and preservation of Amsterdam’s early internet culture. *** Call for contributions *** As the first generation of web users goes grey, it's clear that the internet they remember is no longer around. The early web is now simply another object of nostalgia. Tech anniversaries are a dime a dozen, while once cool digital aesthetics have made several ironic comebacks. All of this reinforces a sense that we’ve left behind a digital history that was as clunky and slow as it was idealistic and naïve. How can we rethink this relationship to the web's past and the past web? This question is crucial today as the open web continues to lose ground to platforms and apps. How can this history be reconstructed and re-evaluated, and how are web archives and web histories impacted by technological change? What do traditional problems of preservation and historiography look like at scale? And what stories capture the diverse transformations and continuities that mark nearly 30 years of web history? There is of course no single web history, materially or conceptually speaking. There is instead a politics of archives, technologies and discourses that needs to be uncovered. How can we expand our view of web history beyond Silicon Valley and celebrated cases? And how can we reveal the technological, social and economic contexts that have shaped not just the present web, but how we access its past? What role do archives play in uncovering the histories of the web, platforms and apps, as well as their production and usage contexts? This conference aims to bring together scholars, archivists and artists interested in preserving, portraying and otherwise engaging with the web that was. In addition to paper submissions, we invite proposals for audiovisual installations, posters, software demos, or other media that connects to the conference themes. Submissions in the form of an abstract may relate to, but are not limited by, the following topics: * Web and internet histories * Historicizing the web and digital culture
 * Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and critiquing periodizations
 * Past futures and paths not taken * Platformization and the changing structure of the web * Social imaginaries of the early web * Archives and access * Research methods for studying the archived web * Methods for platform and app histories * Ethics of (studying) web archives * Technicity of web archives * Software histories * Archived audiences and histories of internet use * Identity, intersectionality and web history * Digital activism and web history * Histories of net criticism * Media industries and their online histories * Web histories elsewhere: forgotten and marginalized web cultures * Realtime, time travel and other web temporalities * Future histories and the archive of tomorrow
*** Submissions *** Submissions are welcomed from all fields and disciplines, and we would particularly encourage postgraduate students and early career researchers to participate. * Individual papers of 20 minutes length (750-word abstract and a short author bio of 100-150 words). * Panel sessions consisting of three individual papers, introduced by a chair (750-word abstract for each paper, a brief description of 300 words of the purpose of the panel, and a short author bio of 100-150 words for each speaker).
 * Posters, demonstrations, and audio/video/interactive installations (short abstract of no more than 300 words, a list of A/V or other requirements, and a short author bio of 100-150 words) * Workshops (a 500-word rationale for the workshop, including discussion of why the topic lends itself to a workshop format, and a short author bio of 100-150 words for the workshop organiser(s)). Deadline for submission is 19 October 2018. Acceptance will be on the basis of double-blind peer review. *** Timetable *** May 2018 - dates out June 2018 - first call for papers July 2018 - second call for papers August 2018 - third call for papers September 2018 - final call for papers and submissions open 19 October 2018 - submission of abstracts December 2018 - notification of acceptance 19–21 June 2019 - conference *** Organizing Committee *** Anne Helmond, University of Amsterdam, NL Michael Stevenson, University of Amsterdam, NL In collaboration with the RESAW Conference Committee: Niels Brügger, Aarhus University, DK (organiser 2015) Jane Winters, University of London, UK (organiser 2017) Valérie Schafer, University of Luxembourg, LU (coming organiser 2021) *** Program Committee *** Susan Aasman, University of Groningen, NL Gerard Alberts, University of Amsterdam, NL Megan Ankerson, University of Michigan, USA Anat Ben-David, The Open University of Israel, IL Josephine Bosma, independent art critic and theorist, NL Sally Chambers, Ghent University, BE Frédéric Clavert, C2DH Luxembourg Annet Dekker, University of Amsterdam, NL Matthew Fuller, Goldsmiths, UK Sophie Gebeil, Aix-Marseille University, FR Robert W. Call for Participation: Archives Unleashed Datathon, Vancouver, 1-2 November 2018
by Ian Milligan 04 Jun '18

04 Jun '18

Apologies for cross-posts - and please forward to any interested parties! Archives Unleashed: Call for Participation Web Data at Scale with the Archives Unleashed Toolkit: Web Archive Datathon Harbour Centre, Simon Fraser University Vancouver Campus 1-2 November 2018 http://archivesunleashed.org/vancouver/ The World Wide Web has had a profound impact on how we research and understand the past. The sheer amount of cultural information that is generated and, crucially, preserved every day in electronic form, presents exciting new opportunities for researchers. Much of this information is captured within web archives. Web archives often contain hundreds of billions of web pages, ranging from individual homepages and social media posts, to institutional websites. These archives offer tremendous potential for social scientists and humanists, and the questions research may pose stretch across a multitude of fields. In short, web archives offer the ability to reconstruct large-scale traces of the relatively recent past. *Archives Unleashed Toolkit* The Archives Unleashed Team has partnered with SFU Library and KEY (SFU’s Big Data initiative) to host the next Archives Unleashed datathon. This event is tailored towards web archives practitioners and researchers. The Archives Unleashed datathon presents an opportunity for librarians, archivists, researchers, computer scientists, and others to collaboratively work with web collections and explore cutting-edge research tools through hands on experience. This event will bring together a small group of approximately 15-20 participants to experiment with the newest release of AUT (Archives Unleashed Toolkit) and the Archives Unleashed Cloud, and to kick-off collaboratively inspired research projects. Participants will have access to analytics software and specialists, and will be exposed to the process of working with web archive files at scale. For more information on AUT and the Cloud, please visit http://archivesunleashed.org/. This will be our second Canadian event, with two additional datathons happening in eastern and western area of the United States. Accordingly, the Vancouver datathon will prioritize regional applicants from western and central Canada and the northwestern United States. *Sponsors + Travel Grants* This event is possible thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Simon Fraser University Library, SFU Key, University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Arts, York University Libraries, Compute Canada, and Start Smart Labs. The Archives Unleashed team is pleased to offer modest travel grants to help attendees participate in this event. These grants can cover up to $1,000 CAD in travel expenses. If you require financial assistance to attend the event, please indicate in your statement of interest that you would like to be considered for the travel grant. *Submission Guidelines* Those interested in participating should send a 250-word expression of interest and a short one-page CV to the Archives Unleashed Team (archivesunleashed(a)gmail.com <mailto:archivesunleashed@gmail.com>) by midnight (EST) on 16 July 2018. This expression of interest should address your background and interests in web archiving, and what you would hope to get out of working with tools and web archive data at scale. Applicants will be notified by 27 July 2018. On behalf of the organizers, Ian Milligan (University of Waterloo), Rebecca Dowson (Simon Fraser University), Nick Ruest (York University), Jimmy Lin (University of Waterloo), and Samantha Fritz (University of Waterloo) -- Ian Milligan | Associate Professor | Department of History University of Waterloo | 200 University Ave W Waterloo ON N2L 3G1 +1 (519) 888-4567 x32775 | http://ianmilligan.ca <http://ianmilligan.ca/> | @ianmilligan1 <https://twitter.com/ianmilligan1>

Any #metoo research out there?
by Karin Hansson 04 Jun '18

04 Jun '18

Dear all, I am looking at Swedish #metoo activism from a HCI perspective and would love to compare this with research on #metoo activism in other countries. (We have started to compile a list of ongoing research and publications here http://metoo.blogs.dsv.su.se) The context is in an interdisciplinary project where we are comparing the development in different areas, and my focus is the organisation of the activism. I am especially interested in methodologies for studying communication that takes place on multiple platforms and contexts online/offline. Happy for any advice! Best regards, Karin Hansson https://people.dsv.su.se/~khansson/
