CFP: Towards an Ethics of Community Management
by Scott Wright 26 May '18

26 May '18

Apologies for cross-posting. Towards an Ethics of Community Management: SWARM Research Symposium 2-5pm Friday 31st August 2018, The Dream Factory, Melbourne, Australia Over the past two years, the role of social media and online communities has come under increased scrutiny. Whether this be about the implications of interface and algorithmic design, the toxicity of communities, the spread of false information, or the use of psychographic data to micro-target individuals, it has become clear that we need to reconsider the public responsibility of social media platforms. This includes imagining new and more ethical approaches to effective online community management. The Swarm Research Symposium, hosted by the Media and Communications Program at the University of Melbourne, is designed to bring together academic and industry thinkers to exchange ideas and research on the topic of ethical community management. The symposium will be capped off with a keynote presentation from Associate Professor Tarleton Gillespie<https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/people/tarleton/>, currently Principal Researcher at Microsoft in the Social Media Collective<https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/group/social-media-collective/>. Professor Gillespie will talk on his new book: Custodians of the Internet: Platforms, content moderation and the hidden decisions that shape social media. We invite academics and practitioners to submit 2-400 word abstracts for papers on the symposium theme: ‘Towards an Ethics of Community Management’. Specific areas of interest include: * Humane technology design * Measures for establishing healthy online communities * The processes of online content management * The power of platforms and algorithms in shaping online community * Human, automatic and AI-based moderation and management processes * The ethics of algorithms, including gender, racial and political bias * Inclusion and diversity in online communities There is no registration fee for the research symposium. Proposals are due by 22 June and successful applicants will be informed by the start of July. Please send proposals to: Dr Jennifer Beckett jennifer.beckett(a)unimelb.edu.au<mailto:jennifer.beckett@unimelb.edu.au> or Associate Professor Scott Wright scott.wright(a)unimelb.edu.au<mailto:scott.wright@unimelb.edu.au> SWARM is Australia’s online community management conference. It was founded in 2011, and runs over two days. More details about the conference can be found here: https://www.swarmconference.com.au/. The Media and Communications Program at the University of Melbourne is top-ranked in Australia (QS 2018) and is a research leader in online community management. www.scott-wright.net Associate Professor Scott Wright Deputy Head, Media and Communication Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Advancing Journalism School of Culture and Communication University of Melbourne Melbourne VIC, 3010 Australia https://scholar.google.com.au/citations?user=VzWDwiEAAAAJ&hl=en https://findanexpert.unimelb.edu.au/display/person640922

Re: [Air-L] Content Analysis of Historical Tweet Set
by Kevin Driscoll 25 May '18

25 May '18

Hi Fran, NVivo might still do the trick if you can shrink the size of your population. Depending on the questions you are trying to answer with the content analysis, perhaps you can find a way to collapse some of these 250,000 tweets into a smaller set and then sample from the resulting subpopulation(s). (My hunch is that you may not need to load up every single message to get a robust account of the discourse.) Without knowing the details of your sample, here are some questions that have helped me to reduce my sample in the past: - Are all of the tweets "original" or are some of them "retweets"? Can you analyze retweets separately from original messages? - Are there other redundant or duplicate messages in your corpus? Automatically generated messages sometimes follow patterns that are (relatively) easy to spot. For example, a weather bot or a news aggregator might spit out an update every 60 minutes. Is it necessary to code everyone one? - Can you group the tweets around certain URLs or meaningful phrases or @-mentions and then treat these groups as single cases? Ideally, these preliminary/exploratory analyses will reduce the size of the corpus without sacrificing the validity of your sample. I hope this is helpful. Please do let us know what you find! Best of luck! New Book: Networked Press Freedom (MIT Press)
by Mike Ananny 25 May '18

25 May '18

Hello, Please excuse the cross-postings, but I'm excited to share that my new book is now shipping: */Networked Press Freedom: Creating Infrastructures for a Public Right to Hear/* (MIT Press) Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Networked-Press-Freedom-Creating-Infrastructures/dp/… Read introduction for free: http://mike.ananny.org/ananny_introduction_networkedPressFreedom_2018.pdf The full description and endorsements are below, but the book essentially asks: * What does press freedom mean today, and why does it matter? * As lines blur between publishers and platforms, how can we think about what the networked press /should/ be? * As news organizations, philanthropists, regulators, and technologists all jockey for power to create the networked press, how do their moves create particular types of press freedom, and publics? * How can a reinterpretation of the First Amendment and press freedom history offer new ways to think about the press freedom journalists and technologists are creating today? I tried to make the book accessible not only to media and technology scholars, but also to students, journalists, policy-makers, philanthropists, technologists, and regulators looking for new ways to think about the press, its freedoms, and journalism's relationships to technology. I'd be extremely grateful if you could please help spread the word, and share with folks you think might be interested. All the best, -- Mike. ***** *NETWORKED PRESS FREEDOM* /Creating Infrastructures for a Public Right to Hear/ By Mike Ananny Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Networked-Press-Freedom-Creating-Infrastructures/dp/… Read introduction for free: http://mike.ananny.org/ananny_introduction_networkedPressFreedom_2018.pdf *Key questions:* * What does press freedom mean today, and why does it matter? * As lines blur between publishers and platforms, how can we think about what the networked press /should/ be? * As news organizations, philanthropists, regulators, and technologists all jockey for power to create the networked press, how do their moves create particular types of press freedom, and publics? * How can a reinterpretation of the First Amendment and press freedom history offer new ways to think about the press freedom journalists and technologists are creating today? *OVERVIEW* In Networked Press Freedom, Mike Ananny offers a new way to think about freedom of the press in a time when media systems are in fundamental flux. Ananny challenges the idea that press freedom comes only from heroic, lone journalists who speak truth to power. Instead, drawing on journalism studies, institutional sociology, political theory, science and technology studies, and an analysis of ten years of journalism discourse about news and technology, he argues that press freedom emerges from social, technological, institutional, and normative forces that vie for power and fight for visions of democratic life. He shows how dominant, historical ideals of professionalized press freedom often mistook journalistic freedom from constraints for the public’s freedom to encounter the rich mix of people and ideas that self-governance requires. Ananny's notion of press freedom ensures not only an individual right to speak, but also a public right to hear. Seeing press freedom as essential for democratic self-governance, Ananny explores what publics need, what kind of free press they should demand, and how today's press freedom emerges from intertwined collections of humans and machines. If someone says, "The public needs a free press," Ananny urges us to ask in response, "What kind of public, what kind of freedom, and what kind of press?" Answering these questions shows what robust, self-governing publics need to demand of technologists and journalists alike. *ABOUT THE AUTHOR* Mike Ananny is Associate Professor of Communication and Journalism in the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California and a Faculty Affiliate in USC’s Science, Technology, and Society initiative and a Fellow with Columbia University’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism. *ENDORSEMENTS* "By interrogating the public's right to hear as a critical complement to speech rights, Networked Press Freedom offers one of the most original accounts of the power and possibilities of journalism. Ananny masterfully blends a wide array of literatures and a textured understanding of the news. The result is a must-read text poised to make a major contribution for decades to come." --- *Pablo J. Boczkowski*, Professor, School of Communication, Northwestern University; coauthor of The News Gap; author of Digitizing the News and News at Work "This book is a brilliant analysis of how to interpret freedom of the press in the age of the real-time social web. At a time when technology companies, press institutions, and the public are mired in confusion as to their rights and roles in preserving democracy, Networked Press Freedom is a beacon of clarity, shedding light and bringing definition to this foggy landscape." --- *Emily Bell*, Director, Tow Center for Digital Journalism; Professor of Professional Practice, Columbia Journalism School ***** *--- MIKE ANANNY* + /NEW BOOK:/ "Networked Press Freedom: Creating Infrastructures for a Public Right to Hear" [Amazon <https://www.amazon.com/Networked-Press-Freedom-Creating-Infrastructures/dp/…> | MIT Press <https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/networked-press-freedom>] + /Associate Professor of Communication & Journalism/ | Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, University of Southern California + /Faculty Affiliate/ | Science, Technology, and Society, University of Southern California + /Fellow/ | Tow Center for Digital Journalism, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism mike.ananny.org <http://mike.ananny.org> | ananny(a)usc.edu <mailto:ananny@usc.edu> | @ananny

Pressure groups and influence on Twitter
by Alette Schoon 24 May '18

24 May '18

Hi members I am currently supervising a PhD student who is examining how pressure groups like NPOs get their talking points into the mainstream media and public domain through using social media, especially Twitter. I was hoping members could provide some guidelines on useful literature to frame this discussion. The student is looking at public spheres and networked publics, but this seems not to engage sufficiently with the idea of actively strategizing around constructing messages to be taken up by the public. I was hoping there is literature that takes theories of agenda setting and influence/persuasion into the social media realm. I will really appreciate your suggestions. All the best Alette Alette Schoon (PhD) Senior Lecturer Video and Multimedia Production School of Journalism and Media Studies Rhodes University South Africa https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Alette_Schoon

CFP: Family and the Media
by Francisco Seoane 24 May '18

24 May '18

Call for Submissions: “Family and the Media: Cultural Politics and Public Narratives” Special June 2019 Issue of The International Journal of Media & Cultural Politics edited by Andrea Carosso, Tetiana Havlin and Eva-Sabine Zehelein Deadline for submission of abstracts (500 words, add 200 words bio) or, if possible, full articles (8,000 words): June 15, 2018 Notification of acceptance: July 15, 2018 Final deadline for submission of full article: October 30, 2018 All articles undergo a double blind peer review process. Family as a form of social coexistence is widespread in political, cultural and media debates; cultural politics with respect to family can stir elections, fill media content, sell products and (re)construct socio-cultural and -political discourses. The presentation of families in the media is contextual, culturally encoded and socially determined in accordance with or opposition to predominant cultural politics and political ideologies. The International Journal of Media and Culture (The IJMCP) invites contributions to the June 2019 special issue dedicated to “Family and the Media: Cultural Politics and Public Narratives.” The focus of this issue is on the analysis of (re)representations of family matters in diverse media. We ask: How and with which effect are family/families constructed/reflected in cultural politics and public narratives, in media as diverse as TV-series and film, (print) journalism and photography, blogs and microblogs (Twitter), social media apps (Snapchat or Instagram), radio and podcasts, or computer games? How do these media narratives construct, shape and/or influence public (political) discourses? We employ a very broad understanding of “family” – one that includes yet goes well beyond the culturally and discursively enshrined “nuclear family” paradigm: e.g. heteronormative as well as homonormative families, pluripaternal and monopaternal families, patchwork networks, “dysfunctional” families; families based on genetic bonds or emotional belonging. We invite comparative transcultural perspectives. Please address queries and submissions no later than June 15, 2018 to andrea.carosso(a)unito.it, havlin(a)soziologie.uni-siegen.de and zehelein(a)em.uni-frankfurt.de. -- Francisco Seoane Pérez Assistant Professor / Profesor Visitante Lector Co-Editor, International Journal of Media & Cultural Politics Departamento de Periodismo y Comunicación AudiovisualUniversidad Carlos III de MadridFacultad de Humanidades, Comunicación y DocumentaciónDespacho 17.2.03Calle Madrid, 133. 28903 Getafe (Madrid) SpainTel. +34 91 624 85 55 Ext. 8555E-mail: fseoane(a)hum.uc3m.es Buy my book 'Political Communication in Europe' here: http://a.co/91Ufz4k
