Postdoc position Russian Media Lab - University of Helsinki
by Mariëlle W. 21 May '18

21 May '18

The Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki invites applications for an enthusiastic and creative POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER <https://www.helsinki.fi/en/open-positions/postdoctoral-researcher-russia-me…> for a fixed term from 3rd of September 2018 to 30th of June 2019, to work within the project 'Russia MediaLab: Freedom of speech and critical journalism in Russia'. The employment contract will include a trial period of six months. If measured according to conventional parameters, freedom of speech and expression in Russia has deteriorated. However, such development is not uncontested and without contradictions. Instead, actions and measures taken can prove inefficient or have unintended outcomes, which can be either negative or positive in terms of freedom of speech. Likewise, freedom of speech can also unintentionally shrink due to reasons such as the strained economic situation or increasing commercialization. To formulate a fuller picture of freedom of speech in Russia today, it is therefore not enough to study measures of control and questions of implementation, but also to adopt the opposite perspective – that is, to study freedom of speech and expression from the perspective of the areas of relative freedom. See: http://blogs.helsinki.fi/russianmedialab. Potential candidates can approach the subject matter from several different perspectives: - Media regulation and self-regulation - Legislation and media - Media culture and -politics - Russia’s political culture and media - Media economy - Cultural institutions The subject matter can be approached from the angle of different humanities or social science disciplines. A strive for multidisciplinarity and willingness to partake in interdisciplinary discussions are appreciated. According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, the appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field, have the ability to conduct independent scientific research and possess the teaching skills required for the position. The candidate should have a proven capability to publish in scientific journals, have excellent analytical and methodological skills, and be able to work both independently and as a part of a multidisciplinary scientific community. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent skills in written and oral English, as well as have a good command of Russian. The salary for the position will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. The starting gross salary of a post-doctoral researcher is around 3180 € per month, depending on the qualifications and experience of the applicant. Applications must be accompanied by the following English-language documents submitted as a single pdf file: - CV (max. 3 pages) - list of publications (max. 3 pages) - 1–2 page summary of the applicant’s motivation to join the Russia MediaLab -project and the scientific community of the Aleksanteri Institute - innovative research plan concerning freedom of speech and expression in Russia (max. 5 pages) - sample of academic writing (max. 10 000 words) - contact information of 2– 3 referees Please submit your application through the University of Helsinki Recruitment System <https://www.helsinki.fi/en/open-positions/postdoctoral-researcher-russia-me…>. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to submit their application via the SAP HR portal. The deadline for applications is June 18th 2018. Applications will be evaluated by a preparatory commission, consisting of representatives of different disciplines. The applicants will be informed about the choices by e-mail within two months from the application deadline. Further information about the position may be obtained from Director of the Project, Professor Markku Kangaspuro, tel. +358 50 5223393, markku.kangaspuro(a)helsinki.fi. Call for Papers: Image is the New Text Electronic Journal of Communication Submission Date: June 15, 2018 (revised date) Today, the written word is no longer the principal mode of communication. Instead, a stream of digital visuals, in the form of pictures, photos, GIFs, infographics, memes, and videos, floods users' smartphones, iPads, laptops, and other digital devices. This special issue addresses the rising importance of digital images in communications as citizens across the globe transition from a textual communication landscape to a dawning visual era. We welcome research drawing on all theoretical and methodological perspectives. Research on newer and understudied social media platforms, such as Instagram and SnapChat, is particularly encouraged. Questions: Please address any questions to the Special Issue Editor, Professor Terri L. Towner, Oakland University, email: [towner at oakland dot edu] For the full call for papers, see: http://www.cios.org/www/ejc/calls/digvis.htm

Call for Papers - (In)Equalities and Social (In)Visibilities in the Digital Age – Journal Interações
by Inês Amaral 21 May '18

21 May '18

*Call for Papers - (In)Equalities and Social (In)Visibilities in the Digital Age – Journal Interações* The influence of new technologies in public and private spheres of society, rather than a reformulation, has given rise to a new social field and directly interferes with how we perceive the world, relate to it and others. In Pierre Bourdieu's (2001) theory, field arises as a configuration of socially distributed relations. Progressively, a universe of socialisation has emerged and consolidated: cyberspace. Although virtual, it exists and produces effects. It can be defined as the space boosted by the different digital communication platforms and assumes itself as an individual communication model, allowing the receiver to be simultaneously emitter. Space of flows (Castells, 1996), cyberspace translates the social dimension of the Internet enabling the diffusion of communication/information on a global scale. This causes an intense process of inclusion and exclusion of people in the network. The reference to info-inclusive and info-excluded societies of the digital scenario is imperative when it is reflected in the geography of the new socio-technological spaces. The dynamics of these territories are directly associated with the way social, demographic, economic and technological variables condition each other, revealing the potential for dissemination of information and knowledge through technologies. In this special issue of the journal Interações we propose a reflection on (In)Equalities and Social (In)Visibilities in the Digital Age. Unpublished works that present research results and/or theoretical reflection on this theme are accepted (although this special issue is not limited to these topics): - Digital and social and economic inequalities in different geographical contexts; - Promoting equality by digital; - Visibilities and social invisible created by movements of exclusion or social inclusion, digital, media, economic, etc.; - Invisible social groups in the digital age; - Digital literacy and vulnerable social groups; - Digital as a geographical barrier; - Conditioning created by technology to the individual in a social context. Deadline for submission of articles: June 25 Notification of acceptance: July 10 Publication: July 31 The articles must be sent via email: interacoes(a)ismt.pt Any questions should be addressed to the same email. Guidelines and other instructions for authors can be found on the journal's website: http://www.interacoes-ismt.com/index.php/revista Interações is a scientific journal of Instituto Superior Miguel Torga with a biannual edition. The journal publishes original papers that present research results and/or theoretical reflection in the different fields of social sciences and humanities. From an interdisciplinary editorial perspective, Interações' primary objective is to foster the reflection and diffusion of knowledge in the areas of Social and Human Sciences, with a particular focus on Portuguese and Latin American spaces. The journal accepts articles of scientific investigation, reviews and critical essays.

Health Recommender Systems workshop co-located with ACM RecSys 2018: Call for Papers
by Christoph Trattner 20 May '18

20 May '18

** Please forward to anyone who might be interested ** *Apologies for multiple postings* -------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS International Workshop on Health Recommender Systems, *Deadline July 16th, 2018* to be held in Vancouver (Canada) co-located with ACM RecSys 2018 (https://recsys.acm.org/) Website: https://healthrecsys.github.io/2018 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Important Dates: ================ ** July 16th, 2018, Paper submission deadline ** August 13th, 2018, Author notification ** August 27th, 2018, Camera-ready version deadline ** October 6th, 2018, HRS Workshop ** 2nd-7th October 2018 RecSys conference Workshop Organizers: ==================== David Elsweiler (University of Regensburg, Germany) Bernd Ludwig (University of Regensburg, Germany) Alan Said (University of Skoevde, Sweden) Hanna Schaefer (TU Muenchen, Germany) Christoph Trattner (University of Bergen, Norway) Helma Torkamaan (University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany) Objectives & Topics: ==================== Information systems are becoming more and more intertwined with systems and approaches developed with the purpose of keeping us healthy and increasing our general wellbeing. In the two previous workshops on Health Recommender Systems (HRS), we elaborated a great variety of fields in which recommender systems can improve our awareness, understanding and behavior regarding our own, and the general public's health. At the same time, these application areas bring new challenges into the recommender community. Recommendations that influence the health status of a patient need to be liable, today, they often involve a human in the loop to make sure the recommendations are sound. To make the recommender liable, complex domain-specific user models need to be created, which creates privacy issues. While trust in a recommendation needs to be explicitly earned by e.g. transparency, explanations and empowerment, other systems might want to persuade users into beneficial actions that would not be willingly chosen otherwise. The variety of those challenges also results from the number and diversity of stakeholders involved in health systems. Taking the patient's perspective, simple interaction and safety against harmful recommendations might be the prioritized concern. For clinicians and experts, on the other hand, what matters is precise and accurate content. Finally, health care providers, insurance providers, and clinics are interested in other aspects, e.g. success rates, study results, and financial benefits of the new systems. This workshop goes deeper into the discussions started at the two prior workshops and works towards further development of the research topics in Health Recommender Systems. Our aim is to enhance the results of the last two workshops in the following areas: ** Elaborate discussion topics of the previous workshops on health promotion, health care as well as methods ** Strengthen the community of researchers working on Health in RecSys ** Attract representatives from e.g. health, psychology, medicine, nutrition, fitness ** Find cross-domain collaboration projects and funding targets ** Exchange and share infrastructure (datasets and tools) We invite submissions that may include the following topics but are not limited to: ** Algorithms and Recommendation Strategies ** Domain Knowledge Representation ** Regulations and Standards ** Medical Evaluation Techniques ** User Profiling ** Pervasive Systems ** Personalization ** Behavioral Interventions ** Persuasion/Nudging/Behavioral Change ** Gamification and Serious Games ** Adherence ** Empowerment ** Trust ** Explanations ** Patient Needs/ Satisfaction ** User Interaction Design ** Human/ Expert-in-the-Loop ** Privacy The goal of this workshop is to share and discuss research and projects that reach beyond classic recommender techniques and discuss health domain related challenges of recommender systems. Submissions: ============ We solicit research papers ( up to 6 pages) and short position papers (2 pages), both in the ACM conference paper style. Participants can decide between a research-focused submission, resulting in a workshop presentation, and a project focused submission, resulting in a workshop poster. CfA: 13th IFIP Summer School 2018 on Privacy and Identity Management - Fairness, Accountability and Transparency in the Age of Big Data
by Jo PIERSON 18 May '18

18 May '18

CALL FOR PAPERS/ABSTRACTS EXTENDED SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 24TH MAY 2018 13th IFIP Summer School 2018 on Privacy and Identity Management - Fairness, Accountability and Transparency in the Age of Big Data - Vienna, Austria, 20-24 August 2018 https://www.ifip-summerschool.org/ Background and goals We are inviting contributions to this IFIP Summer School on Privacy and Identity Management from students who are at the stage of preparing a master or a PhD thesis as well as young researchers and practitioners. The school is interactive in character, and is composed of plenary lectures and workshops based around Master/PhD students’ presentations. The principle is to encourage young academic and industry entrants to the privacy and identity management world to share their own ideas, build up a collegial relationship with others, gain experience in making presentations, and potentially publish a paper through the resulting book proceedings. This Summer School is a joint effort between the IFIP Working Groups 9.2, 9.6/11.7, 11.6, and Special Interest Group 9.2.2, of different European and national projects. The 2018 IFIP Summer School will bring together junior and senior researchers and practitioners from multiple disciplines to discuss important questions concerning privacy and identity management and related issues in a global environment subject to change. This Summer School is not a “taught course”: it does enable, however, students to gain credit points for presenting and attending, and their paper to be considered as a candidate for a Best Paper award. Basic elements The Summer School takes a holistic approach to society and technology and supports interdisciplinary exchange through keynote and plenary lectures, tutorials, workshops, and research paper presentations. In particular, participants’ contributions that combine technical, legal, regulatory, socio-economic, social or societal, political, ethical, anthropological, philosophical, historical, or psychological perspectives are welcome. The interdisciplinary character of the work is fundamental to the School. The research paper presentations and the workshops focus on involving students, and on encouraging the publication of high-quality, thorough, research papers by students/young researchers. To this end, the School has a three-phase review process for submitted papers. In the first phase, submissions are short abstracts as a minimum (full papers are possible). Submissions within the scope of the call are selected for presentation at the School. For accepted submissions the full papers are to be submitted latest before the Summer School takes place and they appear in the (unreviewed) pre-proceedings. In a second review phase, the full papers are reviewed soon after the Summer School. The students are invited to resubmit their full papers, after they have revised them based on two sets of feedback: the discussions that took place at the Summer School, as well as a formal written review by programme committee members. In the third review phase, after the full papers are resubmitted, they are reviewed again for inclusion in the School’s proceedings which will be published by Springer. Submissions by senior researchers and participants in European, national, or regional/community research projects are also very welcome, and are generally published in a separate section of the book volume. Submitting papers / abstracts The abstract submissions should contain a concise problem statement, an outline, and clear messages (they should not be about work ‘to be done’). On acceptance of the abstract, authors are to submit their full papers of up to 16 pages in length in Springer LNCS format. These versions of the papers will be made available to all participants in the Summer School pre-proceedings. After the Summer School, authors will have the opportunity to revise and re-submit their full papers (again in Springer LNCS format, with a maximum of 16 pages). These versions should address the questions and discussions raised on the paper during the Summer School as well as in the detailed reviews provided by the Programme Committee members. These revised papers will be considered for publication in the Summer School proceedings published by Springer, the official IFIP publisher. The papers to be included in the final proceedings will again be reviewed and finally selected by the Summer School Programme Committee. Students are expected to try to publish their work in this volume. Call for Tutorials and Workshops The School also seeks contributions in the form of tutorials and workshop proposals from all disciplines (e.g. computer science, informatics, economics, ethics, law, psychology, sociology, history, political and other social sciences, surveillance studies, business and public management). The timelines for submission of these tutorials and workshops are the same as those of the student papers. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: concepts, technologies and applications, design, enforcement mechanisms, effects, attitudes, and user practices. Tutorials are expected to last one or two hours. Proposals should contain a short summary and state the level and background required for attendees to follow the tutorial. Workshops are expected to last one or two hours and must generate short papers that recapitulate the outcome and the kinds of discussions raised in the School, for inclusion in the post-proceedings. Proposals should contain a short statement summarising the topic(s) to be discussed and the expected contributions from the audience members e.g. responding to a questionnaire or conducting a small experiment. Proposers should indicate whether any special equipment is needed for the workshop, such as audiovisual systems or computational equipment and support. How to submit Extended abstracts (2-4 pages) must be made in PDF format, in the Springer LNCS template (https://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0) and using the Easychair System: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ifipsc2018. Deadlines Extended abstract (2-4 pages) submission, workshop & tutorial proposals: 24th May 2018 (extended) Notification of acceptance for presentation at the school: 4th June 2018 Full papers for pre-proceedings: 8 August 2018 Presentation at Summer School, feedback from participants: 20 – 24 August 2018 First feedback review to the authors: 20 September 2018 Paper submission for Springer proceedings: 10 November 2018 Notification to the authors: 10 December 2018 Camera-ready copy for proceedings: 10 January 2019 General Chairs: Stephan Krenn (AIT Austrian Institute of Technology), Simone Fischer-Hübner (Karlstad University) Programme Committee Co-Chairs: Eleni Kosta (Tilburg University), Jo Pierson (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), Daniel Slamanig (AIT Austrian Institute of Technology) IFIP Summer School Steering Committee: Jan Camenisch (IBM Research – Zürich), Simone Fischer-Hübner (Karlstad University), Marit Hansen (ULD), Anja Lehmann (IBM Research – Zürich), Igor Nai Fovino (JRC), Charles Raab (University of Edinburgh), Kai Rannenberg (Goethe University Frankfurt), Diane Whitehouse (The Castlegate Consultancy).
