New Special Issue of Internet Policy Review *Networked publics: multi-disciplinary perspectives on big policy issues <https://policyreview.info/articles/analysis/networked-publics-multi-discipl…>* Guest-edited by William H. Dutton We’re pleased to announce the publication of our newest special issue, bringing together the best policy-oriented papers presented at the 2017 annual conference of the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) in Tartu, Estonia. The issue – on the broad theme of networked publics – was edited by guest editor William H. Dutton, Professor of media and information policy at Michigan State University. The seven papers in the special issue span topics concerning whether and how technology and policy are reshaping access to information, perspectives on privacy and security online, and social and legal perspectives on informed consent of internet users. As explained in the editorial to this issue, taken together, the papers reflect the rise of new policy, regulatory and governance issues around the internet and social media, an ascendance of disciplinary perspectives in what is arguably an interdisciplinary field, and the value that theoretical perspectives from cultural studies, law and the social sciences can bring to internet policy research. This special issue is the first major release of Internet Policy Review in its fifth anniversary year. The open access journal on internet regulation is a high-quality publication put out by four leading European internet research institutions: The Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), Berlin; the Centre for Creativity, Regulation, Enterprise and Technology (CREATe), Glasgow; the Institut des sciences de la communication (ISCC-CNRS), Paris; the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3), Barcelona. The release of this special issue officially kicks off the Internet Policy Review anniversary series of activities, including both an Open Access Minigolf during the Long Night of the Sciences (Berlin) and the IAMCR conference (Eugene, Oregon) in June, a Grand anniversary celebration (Berlin) in September and a participation in the AoIR2018 conference in October (Montreal). *CALL FOR PAPERS* A Special Issue on Digital Nations - Smart Cities, Innovation & Sustainability Nations are rapidly transforming by leveraging on information and communication technologies (ICTs). The access to information and knowledge across the web enables new innovations and the creation of smart cities. Organisations and governments at all levels initiate ICT-driven programmes to stimulate innovation and address the needs of the key stakeholders. This results in radical changes in the way nations are organized. In "Digital India” the Government of India is implementing a national transformation enabled by ICTs. A major focus in such transformation is the access and provisioning of digital services (including e-government services) across the urban and rural citizens of the country through the Internet. Another such notable initiative is the Smart City projects. Initiatives, like Smart Cities, are likely to play a critical role (hence is a core component of) in urbanisation and such transformation across the nation. Other examples of such regional and national level initiatives are the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities and the Smart Cities plan of Australia. In the era of smart technologies, like Internet of things and big data analytics, these are becoming essential components for creating Smart Cities. These technologies are changing the way organisations leverage on their information assets in the wake of digitisation of products and processes. Sensors embedded in smart devices, like mobile phones and wearables, used by consumers are creating a wealth of data which can be used for social welfare. There has been a huge focus on the emergence of innovative business models, service models and offerings, through which the stakeholder’s value is being maximised. Sustainability of the key assets for any nation, like water resources, energy and green resources, can also be addressed using technology-enabled transformation initiatives. Pollution can be measured, energy markets created and goods can be traced. With the emergence of such innovation and technology-driven transformation, the interests of the different stakeholders needs to be balanced. The different stakeholders are gradually engaging in public life participation using social media platforms. For example, social initiatives like MyGov in India and Australia, REACH in Singapore and Mann ki Baat in India, are enabled through Telephony, Web 2.0 and Mobile Apps, are taking inputs from concerned citizens for actually improving the provisioning of public utilities and services envisioned from the government. Public policymakers need to respond to these changing dynamics of digital nations, for creating an ecosystem which will be sustainable, resilient and addresses the social, economic and digital needs of the society. This special issue of ISF aims to bring together a variety of disciplines for the advancement of knowledge regarding the adoption, use, impact and potential cases to pave the path for Digital Nations. To achieve this goal, literature review, theoretical and empirical papers employing quantitative, qualitative, and/or critical methods are welcomed for consideration. Themes of submission may include but are not limited to the following: - Social media and Web 3.0 for public participation - ICTs for enabling smart cities - Digital and Internet policy for urbanization - Cyber security, privacy and Information risk management - Big data analytics for enabling digital nations - Innovation driven urbanisation - Digital services management - Critical information infrastructure management - Smart supply chain management - Smart logistics and mobility - M2M and M2H intelligence in urbanization - Public policy for supporting digital transformation - Socio-economic and digital inclusion and transformation - Smart ICT adoption studies - Public policy for digital economies - Emerging ICTs like IoT, Blockchains, smart contracts, etc - Innovative models for E-Business and M-Business - Sustainability amidst digitization and urbanization - Open innovation and open data initiatives - Electronic and mobile governance - Management of smart grids, energy, renewables, using ICTs - Service science and cloud computing for digital transformation - Innovative case studies. *Forms of submission* This special issue will consist of 1) the best papers from an open call selected on a competitive basis from the 16th IFIP-I3E; and 2) invited papers that are requested from the editorial members. All submitted papers and invited papers will go through peer review; if an invited paper does not receive a satisfactory review, the paper will not be considered for the special issue. *Submission Instruction* Manuscripts must be submitted in word or latex format to the ISF-Springer online submission system at http://www.editorialmanager.com/isfi/. Paper submissions must conform to the format and submission guidelines of ISF, which is available at http://www.springer.com/business/business+information+systems/journal/10796. Call for participation: PDW at Academy of Management on Work in the Age of Intelligent Machines
by Kevin G Crowston 16 May '18

16 May '18

Call for Participation Work in the Age of Intelligent Machines<https://waim.network/node/748> Academy of Management Professional Development Workshop 9:30-12:30 CT 11 August 2018 Swisshotel, Chicago IL Quick links: Position statement submission<https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=waimaom2018> Registration<https://secure.aom.org/PDWReg/logon.asp> (by 9 August 2018) How work will be impacted by rapidly increasing technological capabilities has been a long-standing concern of many researchers from numerous disciplines. However, growing interest in the impacts of automation on work is beginning to compel researchers to form new coalitions across traditional disciplinary boundaries. This professional development workshop (PDW) at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting aims to promote disciplinary convergence among its participants in relation to work in the age of intelligent machines. Convergence is defined by the National Science Foundation as “the deep integration of knowledge, techniques, and expertise from multiple fields to form new and expanded frameworks” (NSF, 2017<https://www.nsf.gov/od/oia/convergence/index.jsp>). Using this idea as an organizing principle, the PDW will introduce participants to the idea that by embracing research from other disciplines, researchers can inform our emergent conceptual foundations and concomitant strategies in relation to the transformation of work via artificial intelligence. Three issues illustrate the implicit interdisciplinarity of work in the age of the intelligent machine. * First, most people spend the majority of their time working, an act that provides them not only with material rewards, but, for many, personal identity, social status and psychological well-being. As a result, designing work in the age of intelligent machines implicates workers on variety of levels, including attitudinal outcomes such as satisfaction or motivation, behavioral outcomes such as performance or turnover, cognitive outcomes such as learning or identity, and well-being outcomes, such as anxiety, stress or burnout. * Second, automation may cause not only shifts in the type of jobs and needed qualifications, but also in their location. For example, knowledge work is normally associated with a a shift from rural to urban jobs, but more automated transportation may extend commutes. It is critical therefore to identify and monitor the differential impact of intelligent machines along a variety of specific facets, such as workforce diversity, regional unemployment variations, or other issues of education, social class and race. * Third, there are important organization-level issues to consider as the core of the organization is automated. How, for example, will career paths shift if a system automates entry-level work? These and a myriad of additional examples point to an urgent need for cooperative integration among disciplines. It is only by this means that a better understanding of the interrelationships among machines, people, tasks, and organizations can be adequately assessed. Goals The PDW will pursue three goals: 1) identifying specific research problems around work and intelligent machines that require an interdisciplinary, convergent approach; 2) discussing how to develop a common language base that can facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers; and 3) imagining the necessary resources to support convergent research, including information and cyber-infrastructure needs. Participation To participate, please submit a short position statement that expresses your interest in intelligent machines and their impacts on and implications for work. We encourage participation from any disciplinary perspective, including (but not limited to) urban planning, computer science, sociology, information systems, transportation, economics, psychology, law, media studies, engineering, public policy, artificial intelligence—any perspective that can help foster convergent thinking around this increasingly important topic in our society. The following types of position statements are welcome: Track 1: Current Empirical Research: What is happening now? Position statements in this track should report on studies that examine the current state of the art with regard to intelligent machines and work. Track 2: Research questions: What will happen next? Position statements in this track should identify generative research questions and potential study designs. For any particular question, we are especially interested in identifying necessary empirical requirements, including data, site access, etc. What would be needed to answer your question? Statements should be submitted at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=waimaom2018. The deadline to register online<https://secure.aom.org/PDWReg/logon.asp> for the PDW is 9 August 2018. Venue The PDW will be held in conjunction with the Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL. The workshop will begin at 9:30 am CT on Saturday 11 Aug 2018 in the Swisshotel and run to lunch. An optional off-site lunch and meeting will enable participants to continue their discussions. Organizers Kevin Crowston, Syracuse University Mary Beth Watson-Manheim, University of Illinois, Chicago Ingrid Erickson, Syracuse University Jeffrey Nickerson, Stevens Institute of Technology Sponsorship This workshop is part of a series sponsored by the Research Collaboration Network on Work in the Age of Intelligent Machines<http://waim.network/> (NSF IIS-1745463). Please forward among your colleagues and networks … Call for Papers Histories of Computing in Eastern Europe IFIP Working Group 9.7 Part of the 24th IFIP World Congress Poznan University of Technology, Poland 19-21 September 2018 The conference committee has begun to review papers for our history of computing workshop at the next IFIP World Computing Congress, which will be held in Poznan, Poland. Draft papers may be submitted any time before June 15. IFIP’s Working Group 9.7, which is dedicated to international histories of computing, is sponsoring a series of papers on 19-21 September as part of the next IFIP World Congress. Given the World Congress’s location, we are particularly interested in histories that reflect computing and informatics in eastern Europe. Academic historians and lovers of history, computing and informatics professionals, archivists, museum curators, and others are welcome to submit papers. More information about the workshop is available on the working group website (http://ifipwg97.org) As has been the working group's past practice, we request submission of draft papers for consideration. Accepted papers will be revised based on comments from reviewers and be distributed to participants before the workshop to ensure a lively conversation. After the workshop, authors will have the chance to incorporate feedback from the audience before submitting their final papers for consideration in the edited volume of selected papers for the proceedings, which will be published by Springer as a volume in the IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology (IFIP-AICT) series. In order to participate, please submit a draft of your paper via the Springer Online Conference Service. The OCS portal for this workshop is available at https://ocs.springer.com/ocs/home/HCEE2018. Review of draft papers will continue until June 15. Revised versions of accepted papers will be distributed to conference participants on September 1. Enquires in advance of your submission or questions about Springer OCS may be addressed to the chair of the working group, Chris Leslie (chrisleslienyc(a)hotmail.com<mailto:chrisleslienyc@hotmail.com>).
