three positions, Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo
by Charles M. Ess 16 May '18

16 May '18

Dear AoIRists, Screen Cultures is a teaching-driven research group centered around an international MA program, starting up at the Department in the fall of 2019 (<https://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/research/researchareas/screen-cultures/>) Three positions are now available for application, including the Associate Professor position which, while affiliated with the Screen Cultures for the first five years, is a permanent position: <https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/151862/associate-professor-i…> The project also entails a lecturer and a post-doc position: <https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/151860/lecturer-in-media-stu…> <https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/151857/post-doctoral-researc…> IMHO, the research project and MA program are most interesting and promising in any number of ways. I am especially enthusiastic as these include a strong focus on developing _critical_ perspectives and approaches. These are much needed, in my view, as both vital counters to tendencies towards techno-optimism and uncritical embrace of corporate-driven agendas, and, more positively, as contributing to rapidly developing frameworks for ICT design that are more squarely focused on human needs and interests for good and sustainable lives of flourishing. Last but not least: I don't think it is possible, even for me, to overstate the quality and fruitfulness of life and work at the Department and in Norway: the possibilities and opportunities for thriving here are simply exceptional. Hence, I cannot endorse these opportunities too strongly. Please pass along to potentially interested candidates. Many thanks in advance, - charles ess -- Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/people/aca/charlees/index.html> Postboks 1093 Blindern 0317 Oslo, Norway c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no

cases in which data-driven decision-making went awry
by Sheryl Grant 15 May '18

15 May '18

I apologize in advance that this is an imperfectly phrased query. In short, I'm looking for literature about terrible data governance and related issues. Basically, what happens when there are errors in automated data systems, how those errors might have occurred, and what institutions do (or don't) when they discover those errors. Ideally, cases would describe the technical bits as well as the human choices made. Another way to say it is that my colleagues and I are looking for investigations into data-driven decision-making gone awry. I've read Kathy O'Neill's Weapons of Math Destruction, which was excellent, and now I'm looking for more specific cases, if they exist. Thanks, Sheryl Grant

Internet research case study.
by Gerard Cheshire 15 May '18

15 May '18

Fellow AIR list members, Those of you interested in the power of the internet as a modern research resource may wish to read a couple of new papers. Recently the writing system of a Medieval manuscript known as MS408 was revealed to be proto-Romance: i.e. the origin of the Romance languages. In addition, it is written with a proto-Italic alphabet. It is the only known document of this kind and therefore has considerable linguistic value. Two papers have been issued, which explain the writing system and translate a number of excerpts as examples. They can be freely downloaded from the preprint website LingBuzz. 1. Linguistic Missing Links: http://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/003737 <http://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/003737>2. Linguistically Dating and Locating: http:<http://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/003808>//ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/003808<http://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/003808> The internet proved vital in discovering the writing system of the manuscript, as it enabled the cross-referencing of millions of documents - old and new. Also, various dedicated linguistics websites enabled searches for obscure words and terms. The manuscript revealed that the language is a simplified form of spoken Latin, with various foreign and local words introduced to the mix. In addition, the alphabet is phonetically based, but uses symbols from various points of origin. To all intents and purposes, the writing system would appear to be a constructed language, as it seems to have been used only within the region of the Tyrrhenian Sea, west of Italy and subsequently became absorbed into the evolution of the modern Romance languages It seems that the language came about rapidly due to trade, slavery, migration, royal marriage and exchange of ideas between many and various cultures, as a means of common communication: a lingua franca. Thus, it was collectively constructed due to socio-ecological pressures in the Mediterranean, which was the hub of Occidental civilisation at the time. Nearby Naples was the most important port city in the region. Having been constructed, it then became the template for the modern Romance languages, which evolved when the political map caused populations to become relatively isolated during the Renaissance. Regards, G. E. Cheshire. University of Bristol.

Re: [Air-L] question
by Sandra Markus 14 May '18

Hello! I am a doctoral candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University. My dissertation looks at craft, online crafting communities, and craftivism. I have a great deal of familiarity with these communities, both professionally and personally. I am trying to grapple with the issue of positionality in my research. How does my familiarity shape my interpretation? How do you reconcile an inner status with trying to retain a researcher’s impartiality or distance? Or is that impossible to expect? Any insights, thoughts, helpful article would be appreciated! Sandra Markus Doctoral Candidate || sm3291(a)tc.columbia.edu
