I'm thrilled to announce that we are hiring! At the University of Bergen in Norway, we are looking for a fulltime, tenured associate professor in Digital Culture (with a specialisation in aesthetic aspects of digital culture, for instance in digital art, computer games, or electronic literature), and we also have three PhD fellowships in my ERC project Machine Vision in Everyday Life, which are for aesthetic/cultural research on machine vision in digital art, computer games, and narrative fiction (e.g. sci-fi novels, movies or digital fiction). The application deadline for the associate professor position is May 27, and for the PhD fellowships, June 20. Another important difference from many other countries is that PhD fellows are well-paid (abut €45000 or USD 55000 annually) and treated as employees - but you MUST have a research-based MA before you can apply for a PhD fellowship. The games and art fellowships are three-year, research-only positions. The narrative fiction fellowship is four years with 25% teaching. The associate professor position is in practice open rank, as you can apply for promotion for full professor every September, and the requirement for full professor is that you have a PhD plus publications equivalent to another PhD (e.g. a book that is not a revision of your dissertation). The salary mentioned in the ad is a minimum, and would be adjusted based on qualifications. The position is 44% teaching, 44% research and 8% admin. CONVERGENCE The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies Special Issue CFP Gamifying News: Playful approaches to public engagement Guest Editors: Raul Ferrer-Conill (Karlstad University, Sweden), Maxwell Foxman (Columbia University, USA), Janet Jones (London South Bank University, UK), Tanja Sihvonen (University of Vaasa, Finland), and Marko Siitonen (University of Jyväskylä, Finland) Gamified and playful output that interacts with users (no longer audiences) is used pervasively to engage publics with the news agenda. Much of what is now communicated at a societal level has been subverted by the mechanics of social interaction and game-play, challenging legacy publishers and broadcasters to engage anew with their audiences, especially millennials, a generation accustomed to digital interactivity. The quality of public discourse needs to be scrutinised in the context of the take-up of these new technologies and new formats of journalistic distribution. Digital and AI (artificial intelligence) has the power to reinvent engagement with the public sphere through playful, social and immersive encounters, with the potential to both enhance and to diminish the importance of the content. As such, 'newsgames', classified as a broad body of work produced at the intersection of videogames and journalism [1], present possibilities and limitations as they emerge as a more prominent platform. This special issue seeks to interrogate these trends by examining the growth of 'newsgames' and playful approaches to journalism. As a natural continuation of the long-term trend of seeing 'news as entertainment', playful content, distributed virally, can easily influence political discourse and election outcomes, marginalising conventional gatekeepers. In addition, news consumers, in a post-trust age, are less likely to adhere to a traditional understanding of journalistic quality, struggling with the difference between algorithmic and editorial content. This special issue aims to further explore and investigate these and other interrelated factors, and how they relate to a 'fractured' public sphere. An increase in online sources and commentary; the diminished status of the 'expert'; the prevalence of self-affirming online communities slaved to the algorithmic logic of social media, alongside increased scepticism of established news media, all contribute to a shift in the way the public engages with news. The editors welcome submissions exploring these areas but not limited to: · Playful perspectives on journalism · Game mechanics, interactive newscasting, and playful affordances · The growing influence of viral newsgames and their role of reinforcing public opinion · Challenges to journalistic 'professionalism' and ethical considerations regarding the gamification of news · Trust in content that has been authenticated through the social sphere bypassing traditional news media · Growth of news personalisation and the dramatisation of journalism · Innovations in performance and modes of address to drive political engagement · Factual storytelling in immersive virtual environments (IVEs) · Attraction to news as spectacle and entertainment · Affective and emotional journalism, and what that might mean for news reception · The playful public sphere and (re)conceptualizations of publics · Historical analyses of gamified and playful journalism · Cultural components of play and journalism · Critical approaches to gamifying the news · News and artificial intelligence · Fake news and information pollution as 'dark play' Please send proposals of no more than 500 words to gamifyingnews(a)gmail.com<mailto:gamifyingnews@gmail.com> by September 7, 2018. Special collection Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe - published in Social Media + Society

Dear colleagues, I’m excited to announce a special collection Kevin Smets and I have edited titled “Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe” has now been published in /Social Media + Society <http://journals.sagepub.com/page/sms/collections/special-issues/forced-migr…>/. Digital migration has emerged as a contentious topic during the recent so-called “European refugee crisis.” The wide circulation of news images of smartphone carrying Syrian refugees, and Syrian refugees taking selfies upon their safe arrival on European shores became resources for various actors in Europe to imagine themselves and their relation to incoming others. Digital technologies have been mobilized and imagined in contrasting ways by different groups of state actors: for example, as a way of understanding contemporary migration, as a way to control mobility, as a way to attack it, as a way to esthetically capture it, and as a way to uncover agency. Focusing on the context of Europe, this special collection of /Social Media + Society /seeks to historicize, contextualize, empirically ground, and conceptually reflect on the impact of digital technologies on forced migration. We position our intervention in response to the recent upsurge of popular and emerging academic debate on refugees and digital technologies, and it is our specific ambition to recover and foreground again a shared commitment toward social change, equity, and social justice. By reflecting on what is specific about digital connectivity and refugee experiences but also by acknowledging parallels with other communities, we plea for reflexive politics of knowledge production on digital migration. This emerging research focus which seeks to understand the relation between migration and digital media technologies can be labeled digital migration studies. The collection consists of 14 pieces authored by 27 collaborators: alongside our introduction, there are 10 original research papers included, as well as 3 thematic book reviews that include a Q&A dialogue with the authors of the reviewed books. Authors draw on online and offline fieldwork and empirical data covering various forced migrant communities including Syrians, Somalis, Palestinians, Tamils, and Iraqis across contexts including Austria, France, Germany, Sweden, Somalia, the Netherlands, and Turkey In the introductory essay titled ‘Five questions for digital migration studies: Learning from forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe, we elaborate digital migration as a developing field of research. Taking the exceptional attention for digital mediation within the recent so-called “European refugee crisis” as a starting point, we reflect on the main conceptual, methodological and ethical challenges for this emerging field and how it is taking shape through interdisciplinary dialogues and in interaction with policy and public debate. Our discussion is organized around central questions: (1) Why Europe? (2) Where are the field and focus of digital migration studies? (3) Where is the human in digital migration? (4) Where is the political in digital migration? and (5) How can we de-center Europe in digital migration studies? Alongside establishing common ground between various communities of scholarship, we plea for non-digital-media-centric-ness and foreground a commitment toward social change, equity and social justice. In the more general literature on social justice, an important contribution has come from the capabilities approach developed by Indian economist Amartya Sen and US philosopher Martha Nussbaum. The theory challenges utilitarian narratives and liberal notions of redistributive justice and has become the cornerstone of the United Nations’ Human Development Index. Despite its potentially great relevance for media industries and production studies, information and communication for development, telecommunications and media policy, and digital media research, there has been limited use of the capabilities approach across the media, communication and cultural studies field. By bringing together for the first time scholars engaged in applying the capabilities approach to media and communications, this ICA preconference advances an agenda to create a new interdisciplinary focus in the field. It aims to build conceptual bridges across emerging frameworks for studying communicative capabilities, media practice, and digital literacies and to engage with normative debates about media justice, creative justice, and data justice. The preconference directly engages with the central theme of the ICA Annual Conference on “Voices” by inviting reflection on the ways we can address inequalities and enhance communicative opportunities for media workers and users in a global context. The preconference will open with a keynote address by Nick Couldry (London School of Economics) and feature panels from speakers applying the capabilities approach to policy debates, development interventions, and normative media theories.
