Social Networking and Communities @ HICSS (deadline June 15)
by Dan Suthers 03 May '18

03 May '18

Hoping to see AoIR community contributions to our minitrack at HICSS! ------------------------------------------------- CFP: HICSS Social Networking and Communities ------------------------------------------------- 52nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) January 8-11, 2019, Grand Wailea, Maui, Hawaii PAPERS DUE: June 15, 2018 via the HICSS conference system This HICSS minitrack has been ongoing since 2003. The focus is primarily on social media and other social technologies and their interrelations with networks and communities (online and offline). We call for papers that address social networks and communities supported and/or complemented by social media for work, learning, socializing, economic and/or political processes, and/or that address theory, design, practices, use or evaluation of such social media use. This year we are adding an interest in viral phenomena within social networks. In order to leverage an interdisciplinary perspective and enable dialogue between social and technological disciplines, papers may be motivated by a broad range of theory-driven or data-driven perspectives and methods, including for example but not limited to social network analysis, content analysis, ethnographic investigations, and agent-based simulations. We particularly encourage papers that: * advance our understanding of social network growth, formation, structure and outcomes through social media; * explore how socio-technical affordances relate to social media use and outcomes; * examine how information and misinformation spread in social media and networks, and how algorithms, bots, and social media design affect this spread; * evaluate design of social media technologies and practices for effective community development and maintenance; and * develop theories, models and principles of social media design, use and outcomes for networks and communities. We are particularly interested in papers that explore new models, theories and methods rather than re-applying and repeating established results. ABOUT HICSS The Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, in its 52nd year, is one of the longstanding scientific conferences and is highly ranked among information systems conferences. Diverse disciplines unified by a focus on information technologies are woven together in a matrix structure of tracks and themes. By attending HICSS you are not only reaching the audience of your track and mini-track; you also have the opportunity to learn about what is happening in related fields and meet leaders in those fields. Other mini-tracks within the Digital and Social Media track are particularly relevant: see http://hicss.hawaii.edu/tracks-52/digital-and-social-media/ Minitrack Co-Chairs: Karine Nahon (Primary Contact) The Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) at Herzliya and University of Washington karineb(a)uw.edu Dan Suthers University of Hawaii at Manoa suthers(a)hawaii.edu Twitter: #hicss_snc Please see http://www.hicss.org/ for conference, venue and submission information. Papers are due June 15, 2018. This conference does not offer extensions to the deadline. -- Dan Suthers Professor, Dept. of Information and Computer Sciences University of Hawaii at Manoa 1680 East West Road, POST 309, Honolulu, HI 96822 (808) 956-3890 office Personal: http://www2.hawaii.edu/~suthers/ Lab: http://lilt.ics.hawaii.edu/ Department: http://www.ics.hawaii.edu/

Social media (methods) literature list: ethnography, ethics, algorithms, overload, archive
by Daniel Kunzelmann 03 May '18

03 May '18

Dear all, I recently asked this Air-L for some literature advice on the following 5 themes: 1. Ethnographic-driven overviews/articles 2. Ethics (privacy vs. publicness) 3. Interacting with algorithms as a researcher ("my timeline is not your timeline") 4. Strategies to deal with ethnograhic information "overload" 5. Social media as an archive (Historical methods) Here are the results: https://danielderkunzelmann.piratenpad.de/socialmediaethnoenglish. Point 3 (algorithms) and 4 (ethnographic overload) seem to be the points where little literature exists (or simply little interest). For any further recommendations on 3 + 4 just write me and I update this list once again. Thanks all of you for your contributions! Of course, feel free to use this list for your own purpose :) all the best, Daniel https://unibas.academia.edu/DanielKunzelmann

Selfie book out
by Katrin Tiidenberg 03 May '18

03 May '18

Hi all, my book "Selfies: Why We Love (and Hate) Them" is out. It’s intended for “an intelligent lay reader,” but some of the early readers have said it would work well in teaching undergrads about social media practices. There’s a 30% discount if you use the code SELFIE in Emerald’s webshop http://books.emeraldinsight.com/page/detail/Selfies/?k=9781787437173 <http://books.emeraldinsight.com/page/detail/Selfies/?k=9781787437173> if you do read, I’d love to hear your feedback, thanks, Kat Tiidenberg Katrin Tiidenberg, PhD Aarhus University // Tallinn University kkatot.tumblr.com <http://kkatot.tumblr.com/> Selfies Why We Love (and Hate) Them By Katrin Tiidenberg April 2018, PB, £16.99 A SocietyNow title Selfie sticks, filters, Kardashians, online activism, the ‘duckface’, art, authenticity and teenage angst. ‘Selfie culture’ is not a flash in the pan, it’s a social phenomenon that shows no signs of surrender and one that evokes passionate reactions from many. Every day, Facebook users upload 350 million photos, Instagrammers share 95 million photos, and there are 3 billion Snapchat snaps. Not all of those are selfies, but selfies have come to be seen as the bane and boon of visual sharing online and they generate more attention than most other content on social media. Selfies are a conundrum of sorts. As humans, we have a long history of being drawn to images, of communicating visually, and being enchanted with (our own) faces, but the modern ‘selfie’s is often framed as unworthy of all of the attention. Many believe they lack artistic merit; indicate an unhealthy narcissism; lead to mental health problems or even to dangerous behaviour. Selfies can be incredibly imaginative or relentlessly repetitive. What selfies end up meaning depends on the social, cultural and technological context surrounding them. Selfies presents a rich and nuanced analysis of selfie culture. It shows how selfies gain their meanings, illustrates different selfie practices, explores how selfies make us feel and why they have the power to make us feel anything, and unpacks how selfie practices and selfie related norms have changed or might change in the future. This highly-accessible book written for the smart lay reader is grounded in years of academic research on selfies undertaken by author Katrin Tiidenberg. Selfies concludes by demonstrating how selfies, like most other cultural practices, are complex and multifaceted, and offers practical advice, ‘Keep Calm and Selfie On’ for those who do take and share selfies. Katrin Tiidenberg is an Associate Professor of Social Media and Visual Culture at the Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School of Tallinn University, Estonia and a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the School of Communication and Culture in Aarhus University, Denmark. Her research focuses on visual culture and social media, she has published extensively on selfies and is interested on the methods and ethics of studying visual self-presentation and sexuality.
