EXTENDED DEADLINE: CfA Digital Stuff 2018 – Digital Chaos: digital technologies and social disruption
by Chiara Poletti 30 Apr '18

30 Apr '18

Dear all, we have extended the Call for Abstract for the 2nd PG conference organised by the PG interdisciplinary group Digital Stuff<https://digitalstuffcardiff.wordpress.com/> at Cardiff University. The new deadline is 15/05/2018. Can you please forward it to anyone who might be interested? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR ABSTRACTS (deadline 15/05/2018) Digital Stuff 2018 – Digital Chaos: digital technologies and social disruption 2nd Interdisciplinary PG conference Cardiff, 14 June 2018 Over the past few years there has been a dramatic and intensifying shift in discourse around digital technologies. Public, politicians, journalists and commentators have increasingly emphasised the potential for the digital to disrupt, damage and undermine the foundational aspects of society, democracy and the political status quo. In the political sphere Facebook and Twitter are widely accused of undermining the democratic processes through the dissemination of propaganda via networks of bots. Two of the most profound democratic upsets in the recent history of the Anglosphere, Trump and Brexit, are increasingly attributed to the manipulation of voters through algorithms powered by illicitly collected data. Journalists and academics struggle to explain the rise of “fake news”, and what this concept means for the status of knowledge in online discourse. Progressive political activists are intensifying their use of social media to challenge the status quo, with notable examples such as #metoo<https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/metoo?source=feed_text> directly challenging patriarchal power across many sectors and institutions. Meanwhile, reactionary movements are using social media more than ever to spread hate speech and organise on public platforms that seem reluctant to shut down their activity. Outside of and inside social movements, new technologies may present fundamental challenges to monetary sectors and governments: the phenomenal growth of cryptocurrencies may offer new and disruptive technologies for banking and finance, while increasingly sophisticated encryption poses challenges to governments and judiciaries to regulate and intercept communications. In the midst of all this, many countries are stepping up efforts to control their citizens’ activity online, from an increasingly authoritarian Turkey attempting to force platforms to regulate content, to China’s ongoing program of fencing off their citizens’ experience of the internet. This interdisciplinary event funded by Cardiff University Doctoral Academy will bring together postgraduate and early career researchers from a variety of disciplines, to address and discuss the above issues in an intellectually diverse conference. Our conference will take place on June 14th 2018 in Cardiff and cover the above topics and other areas of disruption in contemporary digital studies. Digital Stuff is an interdisciplinary research group, and we encourage submissions from a wide variety of backgrounds: from STEM and computer science, to social science, humanities, journalism, politics, arts and literature. We welcome a wide variety of submissions, including presentations focusing on ongoing or completed research projects, methodological issues, case studies of events, ethical challenges, manifestos, and areas of personal academic interest or expertise. Applicants who are approved for presentation will take part in one of three thematic panels in a single stream conference, with opportunities for detailed discussion and networking alongside attendees, and an academic keynote speaker. Below is a summary of suggested topics, but we enthusiastically welcome and encourage submissions on other related topics: * AI, bots, and fake news * Cyberhate, racism and far-right movements * Online movements and campaigns (i.e. #metoo) * Cryptocurrencies and encryption * Government regulation and civil liberties/human rights abuse * User data, data rights and social media (i.e. Cambridge Analytica) Please use the link below to submit your abstract for ‘Digital Stuff 2018 – Digital Chaos: digital technologies and social disruption’ conference. We use EasyChair for the submissions of abstracts and papers so you will be required to create an account with EasyChair in order to submit to this conference. Link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ds2018 Abstracts should be 300 words, indicating name, institutional affiliation and title of presentation. Presentations will be 15-20 minutes, with Q&A sessions at the end of each block. Deadline for submissions 15/05/2018. Deadline MAY 1st! Visiting Postdoctoral Fellowships “Algorithmed Public Spheres” (Hamburg)
by Cornelius Puschmann 30 Apr '18

30 Apr '18

Dear colleagues, Please allow me to share this reminder regarding the visiting postdoc fellowships at my institute -- deadline is tomorrow! All best (and apologies for cross-posting), Cornelius ***Visiting Postdoctoral Fellowships “Algorithmed Public Spheres” (Deadline: May 1st)*** SUMMARY: The Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for international postdoctoral research fellows who will conduct innovative research on the social and cultural impact of algorithms during stays of 3-12 months in Hamburg in the academic year 2018/2019. DESCRIPTION: The Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research is a publicly funded research institute that focuses on the study of mediated public communication. Its research encompasses both broadcast and digital communication from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. The postdoctoral research network Algorithmed Public Spheres ( https://aps.hans-bredow-institut.de/) has been established to study the relevance of algorithms for the constitution of the public sphere. We emphasize in particular the importance of algorithms for filtering, ranking and selecting media content and for structuring digital communication. In contrast to the use of data mining in areas such as healthcare, credit scoring and general business analytics, where such techniques have a long tradition, the impact of algorithms on the public sphere poses novel challenges. How are communication, media, and public discourse impacted by transferring the dominant logics of consumption from other industries to news, information, and political deliberation, implemented in social media platforms, search engines, and on news websites? How do we adapt as individuals as well as as a society to the growing prevalence of algorithmic systems? Research in this area could include: - Governance of and by algorithms - Algorithm awareness and algorithm literacy - Measurement of algorithmic bias and discrimination - Algorithms in news production, distribution and consumption processes - User interaction with and rationalization of algorithms We invite applications for international postdoctoral research fellows from fields including, but not restricted to, computer and information science, communication and media studies, law, political science, sociology and philosophy, who will conduct innovative research on the social and cultural impact of algorithms during stays of 3-12 months in Hamburg in the academic year 2018/2019. We particularly welcome cross-cutting research proposals that integrate technical and social perspectives and result in concrete outcomes, for example in the form of peer-reviewed research articles or proposals for externally funded projects. Up to two funded fellowships will be awarded as result of this call. The fellowships cover airfare and a contribution to the accommodation and subsistence in Hamburg. In specific cases, we may offer a temporary employment contract instead of a scholarship. To apply, please send a cover letter (one page), a project proposal (up to three pages) and your CV (up to four pages), including a list of your most relevant publications (maximum of five), to Cornelius Puschmann ( c.puschmann(a)hans-bredow-institut.de) Please note that applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered. IMPORTANT DATES: Application deadline: May 1, 2018 Announcement of 2018/2019 Fellows: May 18, 2018

CfPs: Int. Workshop on Health Recommender Systems co-located with ACM RecSys 2018
by Christoph Trattner 30 Apr '18

30 Apr '18

** Please forward to anyone who might be interested ** *Apologies for multiple postings* -------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS International Workshop on Health Recommender Systems, *Deadline July 16th, 2018* to be held in Vancouver (Canada) co-located with ACM RECSYS 2018 (https://recsys.acm.org/) Website: https://healthrecsys.github.io/2018 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Important Dates: ================ ** July 16th, 2018, Paper submission deadline ** August 13th, 2018, Author notification ** August 27th, 2018, Camera-ready version deadline ** October 6th, 2018, HRS Workshop ** 2nd-7th October 2018 RecSys conference Workshop Organizers: ==================== David Elsweiler (University of Regensburg, Germany) Bernd Ludwig (University of Regensburg, Germany) Alan Said (University of Skoevde, Sweden) Hanna Schaefer (TU Muenchen, Germany) Christoph Trattner (University of Bergen, Norway) Helma Torkamaan (University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany) Objectives & Topics: ==================== Information systems are becoming more and more intertwined with systems and approaches developed with the purpose of keeping us healthy and increasing our general wellbeing. In the two previous workshops on Health Recommender Systems (HRS), we elaborated a great variety of fields in which recommender systems can improve our awareness, understanding and behavior regarding our own, and the general public's health. At the same time, these application areas bring new challenges into the recommender community. Recommendations that influence the health status of a patient need to be liable, today, they often involve a human in the loop to make sure the recommendations are sound. To make the recommender liable, complex domain-specific user models need to be created, which creates privacy issues. While trust in a recommendation needs to be explicitly earned by e.g. transparency, explanations and empowerment, other systems might want to persuade users into beneficial actions that would not be willingly chosen otherwise. The variety of those challenges also results from the number and diversity of stakeholders involved in health systems. Taking the patient's perspective, simple interaction and safety against harmful recommendations might be the prioritized concern. For clinicians and experts, on the other hand, what matters is precise and accurate content. Finally, health care providers, insurance providers, and clinics are interested in other aspects, e.g. success rates, study results, and financial benefits of the new systems. This workshop goes deeper into the discussions started at the two prior workshops and works towards further development of the research topics in Health Recommender Systems. Our aim is to enhance the results of the last two workshops in the following areas: ** Elaborate discussion topics of the previous workshops on health promotion, health care as well as methods ** Strengthen the community of researchers working on Health in RecSys ** Attract representatives from e.g. health, psychology, medicine, nutrition, fitness ** Find cross-domain collaboration projects and funding targets ** Exchange and share infrastructure (datasets and tools) We invite submissions that may include the following topics but are not limited to: ** Algorithms and Recommendation Strategies ** Domain Knowledge Representation ** Regulations and Standards ** Medical Evaluation Techniques ** User Profiling ** Pervasive Systems ** Personalization ** Behavioral Interventions ** Persuasion/Nudging/Behavioral Change ** Gamification and Serious Games ** Adherence ** Empowerment ** Trust ** Explanations ** Patient Needs/ Satisfaction ** User Interaction Design ** Human/ Expert-in-the-Loop ** Privacy The goal of this workshop is to share and discuss research and projects that reach beyond classic recommender techniques and discuss health domain related challenges of recommender systems. Submissions: ============ We solicit research papers ( up to 6 pages) and short position papers (2 pages), both in the ACM conference paper style. Participants can decide between a research focused submission, resulting in a workshop presentation, and a project focused submission, resulting in a workshop poster. Call for Papers in Special Issue: "Image is the New Text: The Rise of Digital Visuals in Communication" in *The Electronic Journal of Communication*: http://www.cios.org/www/ejc/ calls/digvis.htm Deadline for full manuscripts: June 1, 2018 Today, we have entered a post-text world where the written word is no longer the principal mode of communication. Instead, a stream of digital visuals, in the form of pictures, photos, GIFs, infographics, memes, and videos, flood users? smartphones, iPads, laptops, and other digital devices. Exposure to digital visuals happens everywhere? social media sites (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat), online newspapers, emails, blogs, and digital messaging applications. Recent reports indicate that by the end of 2018 a majority of all marketing communication will be visual. Scholars have concluded that visuals are more easily remembered, recalled, and recognized than words. In fact, on social media, visual content is far more likely to be shared than any other content. Despite the changing modes of communication, current communication research continues to focus principally on textual content while overlooking the role of digital visuals. This special issue addresses the rising importance of digital images in communications as citizens across the globe transition from a textual communication landscape to a dawning visual era. We welcome research drawing on all theoretical and methodological perspectives. Research on newer and understudied social media platforms, such as Instagram and SnapChat, is particularly encouraged. Possible topics and questions for papers might include, but are not limited to: - The distribution of digital visuals on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, SnapChat, Tumblr, Reddit, and YouTube - Who is creating and sharing digital visuals? - Audience engagement with digital visuals (e.g., likes, shares, and comments) - How do digital visuals set the mass media agenda? - What are the predictors of "viral" digital visuals? - What is the impact of audience engagement and attention to digital visuals? - How do digital visuals represent gender, race, class, disability, and age? How are social norms challenged with visuals? - Analyses of the meaning of the digital visuals - Construction of identity -- how do users visually present themselves online? - The rise and role of live digital video - How do digital visuals influence social movements, policy, events, and elite response? Deadline: Submit manuscripts through EJC's online submission system at http://ejcojs.cios.org by June 1, 2018, for consideration. Please be sure to submit to the journal section entitled Special Issue: "Image is the New Text: The Rise of Digital Visuals in Communication" Format: Papers should be prepared in APA 6th Ed. Style. Remove all author-identifying information from the main manuscript for blind review. CfP: ComplexRec 2018 (2nd Workshop on Recommendation in Complex Scenarios)
by Toine Bogers 27 Apr '18

27 Apr '18

======================================================== 2nd Workshop on Recommendation in Complex Scenarios (ComplexRec 2018) http://complexrec2018.aau.dk Co-located with RecSys 2018, Vancouver, Canada October 7, 2018 ======================================================== --------------- Important dates --------------- * Paper submission deadline: July 16, 2018 * Notification of acceptance: August 13, 2018 * Camera-ready deadline: August 27, 2018 * ComplexRec 2018 Workshop: October 7, 2018 ------------------------ Description & Objectives ------------------------ Over the past decade, recommendation algorithms for ratings prediction and item ranking have steadily matured. However, these state-of-the-art algorithms are typically applied in relatively straightforward scenarios. In reality, recommendation is often a more complex problem: it is usually just a single step in the user's more complex background need. These background needs can often place a variety of constraints on which recommendations are interesting to the user and when they are appropriate. However, relatively little research has been done on these complex recommendation scenarios. The ComplexRec 2018 workshop aims to address this by providing an interactive venue for discussing approaches to recommendation in complex scenarios that have no simple one-size-fits-all solution. It is the follow-up to the successful first ComplexRec workshop at RecSys 2017. ------------------ Topics of interest ------------------ We invite original contributions about recommendation in complex scenarios. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Task-based recommendation -- Approaches that take the user's background tasks and needs into account when generating recommendations * Feature-driven recommendation -- Techniques for eliciting, capturing and integrating rich information about user preferences for specific product features * Constraint-based recommendation -- Approaches that successfully combine state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms with complex knowledge-based or constraint-based optimization * Query-driven recommendation -- Techniques for eliciting and incorporating rich information about the user's recommendation need (e.g., need for accessibility, engagement, socio-cultural values, familiarity, etc.) in addition to the standard user preference information * Interactive recommendation -- Techniques for successfully capturing, weighting, and integrating continuous user feedback into recommender systems, both in situations of sparse and rich user interaction * Context-aware recommendation -- Methods for the extraction and integration of complex contextual signals for recommendation * Complex data sources -- Approaches to dealing with complex data sources and how to infer user preferences from these sources * Evaluation & validation -- Approaches to the evaluation and validation of recommendation in complex scenarios ----------- Submissions ----------- We encourage authors to submit short papers and position papers of 2-4 pages in length dedicated to any aspect of recommendation in complex scenarios. Accepted submissions will then be invited for short 10-minute presentations with equal time for discussion. Evaluation criteria for acceptance will include novelty, diversity, significance for theory/practice, quality of presentation, and the potential for sparking interesting discussion at the workshop. All submitted papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee. At least one author of each accepted paper must attend the workshop. All submissions should be in English and should not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Papers should be formatted in the ACM Proceedings Style (https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) and submitted via EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=complexrec2018) Submissions will be published in the workshop proceedings (CEUR-WS). ---------- Organizers ---------- * Toine Bogers (toine(a)hum.aau.dk) Aalborg University Copenhagen, Denmark * Marijn Koolen (marijn.koolen(a)di.huc.knaw.nl) KNAW Humanities Cluster, the Netherlands * Bamshad Mobasher (mobasher(a)cs.depaul.edu) DePaul University, USA * Casper Petersen (cap(a)sampension.dk) Sampension, Denmark * Alan Said (alansaid(a)acm.org) University of Skövde, Sweden For further questions, please contact a member of the organizing committee.
