Interacting with algorithms as a researcher ("my timeline is not your timeline") 4. Strategies to deal with ethnograhic information "overload" 5. First Call for Papers COACT Conference 2019 Interaction and discourse in flux: Changing landscapes of everyday life University of Oulu, Finland, 24-26 April, 2019 This conference explores how changes in society emerge in interactions and discourses. How do these changes influence, and how are they influenced by, participants in various contexts of work and everyday life? We warmly welcome contributions that outline future trends and present new perspectives on interaction and discourse studies. Presentations may investigate the complexity of different settings, data, methods and theories. We invite papers and posters from different viewpoints, such as: - Methodologies in flux: developing and combining different methods and materials, covering also big data and thick data - Research approaches in flux: reconsidering theories, societal impact of research, researchers' responsibility in engaging in public discourse - Technologies in flux: relationships and interactions with, via and within ubiquitous technologies - Participation in flux: examinations of togetherness, encounters and human sociality in different settings; how access and participation may be redefined, e.g., in working life, education and online environments The theme can be examined from, but is not restricted to, the following research approaches and strategies: action research, activity theory, content analysis, conversation analysis, cultural-historical activity theory, discourse analysis, ethnography, mediated discourse analysis, multimodal interaction analysis, narrative analysis and nexus analysis. The invited keynote speakers address the conference theme from their respective viewpoints: Jon Hindmarsh, King’s College London Rodney Jones, University of Reading Leena Kuure, University of Oulu Paul McIlvenny, Aalborg University The main language of the conference is English, but presentations in other languages are also welcome. Every day, Facebook users upload 350 million photos, Instagrammers share 95 million photos, and there are 3 billion Snapchat snaps. Not all of those are selfies, but selfies have come to be seen as the bane and boon of visual sharing online and they generate more attention than most other content on social media. Selfies are a conundrum of sorts. As humans, we have a long history of being drawn to images, of communicating visually, and being enchanted with (our own) faces, but the modern ‘selfie’s is often framed as unworthy of all of the attention. Many believe they lack artistic merit; indicate an unhealthy narcissism; lead to mental health problems or even to dangerous behaviour. Selfies can be incredibly imaginative or relentlessly repetitive. What selfies end up meaning depends on the social, cultural and technological context surrounding them. Selfies presents a rich and nuanced analysis of selfie culture. It shows how selfies gain their meanings, illustrates different selfie practices, explores how selfies make us feel and why they have the power to make us feel anything, and unpacks how selfie practices and selfie related norms have changed or might change in the future. This highly-accessible book written for the smart lay reader is grounded in years of academic research on selfies undertaken by author Katrin Tiidenberg. 8th annual International Symposium on Digital Ethics

Call for abstracts The Center for Digital Ethics & Policy at Loyola University Chicago (digitalethics.org) will be holding its 8th annual International Symposium on Digital Ethics on November 9th, 2018. The keynote speaker will be Catherine D'Ignazio, Principal Investigator at the Emerson Engagement Lab<http://engagementgamelab.org/>. She will be joined by toherfeautred speakers such as Mish Zimdars from Merrimack College and software engineer Susan J. Fowler. This year we are partnering with the Journal of Media Ethics on a theme: From the Margins. We are looking for papers on digital ethics that focus on the discrimination, harassment, marginalization of people because of gender, sexual orientation or racial-ethnic background. The best of these will be presented at the symposium and will be considered for inclusion in a planned special issue of the Journal of Media Ethics on the symposium theme. We will also consider other scholarly work on topics such as privacy, anonymity, griefing, free speech, intellectual property, hacking, scamming, surveillance, information mining, transparency, digital citizenship, or anything else relating to ethical questions and digital technology. This is an interdisciplinary symposium, we welcome all backgrounds and approaches to research. Abstracts should propose original research that has not been presented or published elsewhere. The abstract should be between 500 and 1,000 words in length (not including references) and should include a discussion of the methodology used. Authors of accepted papers will be eligible for up to $400 in travel funds to be able to attend the Chicago symposium. The author(s) of the top student paper will be eligible for up to $1,000 in travel funds. Abstracts are due by midnight CST on May 11th, 2018, and should follow APA or MLA style. As part of the DataONE federation, Member Nodes expose all or portions of their data products by implementing a common set of service interfaces. Member Nodes are typically existing data repositories within the earth science domain and often already fill an important role in their respective communities supporting data management, curation, discovery, and access functions. These preservation-oriented repositories invest time and resources to join DataONE’s persistent, reliable, and sustainable cyberinfrastructure with the common goal to unite environment-based research through its distributed architecture. The benefits of which can lead to better visibility and dissemination of their data, long-term data management, and broader community engagement. *Speaker Bios* As the Director for Development and Operations at DataONE, *Dave Vieglais* oversees development and implementation of architecture, computer science research, and technological evolution through the activities of the Working Groups and the Cyberinfrastructure CIT, including the staff of full-time developers and post-docs. Dave has extensive experience in developing technical infrastructure for integrating biodiversity information at the global level (i.e. DiGIR, Species Analyst). He also brings significant biodiversity modeling expertise and leadership experience in Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the Natural Science Collections Alliance. *Monica Ihli* is a DataONE developer operating from the Center for Information & Communication Studies at the University of Tennessee. She specializes in the systems which integrate contributing Member Nodes into the DataONE Federation. *Amy Forrester* is the DataONE Member Node Coordinator and located at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her main responsibility is relationship management between DataONE Cyberinfrastructure and both contributing and potential Member Nodes. *Mark Servilla* is Principal Investigator of EDI and is based at the University of New Mexico. Mark leads the development of the PASTA data repository software. Mark has a MS in Computer Science and a PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences. *Jim Duncan* serves as the director of the Forest Ecosystem Monitoring Cooperative, where he strives to improve access to information and monitoring of forested ecosystems in the northeast. He supports Cooperators by making long-term monitoring data on the region’s forested ecosystems more accessible, providing needed aggregation and syntheses of disparate data into products that are more useful for seeing and responding to change, and building new regional networks for greater collaboration in monitoring. He also supports interdisciplinary teams in UVM's Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources with spatiotemporal analysis and integration of social and ecological data, and serves on his towns tree board. He previously worked to increase transparency in the oil, gas and mining sectors by giving decision makers and citizens tools to map and interact with data, including in Mongolia and Ghana. *Ken Casey* is the Deputy Director of the Data Stewardship Division in the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and is currently fulfilling the role of the Director as well. Ken provides leadership and guidance to NCEI staff and sets the technical direction of division activities, projects, and programs. Nancy Baym to give lecture @ ICA in Prague

For those of you who are heading to the International Communication Association meeting in Prague later this month it’s my pleasure to invite you to Nancy Baym’s lecture, "New Media, New Work, and the New Call to Intimacy: The Case of Musicians,” this year's Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture. It will take place on Saturday, May 26, 14:00 to 15:15, at the Prague Hilton, floor M, in the Hilton Grand Ballroom. It is an honor to have Nancy give this year’s talk, and it is an honor to have this lecture series; I am grateful to ICA and to the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research for their continued support and sponsorship of it. The abstract describing Nancy’s talk is below. I hope to see many AoIR people in attendance - let’s have an AoIR meetup! Steve ------------------ "New Media, New Work, and the New Call to Intimacy: The Case of Musicians” The architectures and norms of new media push people toward sharing everyday intimacies they might historically have kept to close friends and family. As more people are pushed toward gig work, the original gig workers - musicians - provide an exemplary lens for exploring the implications of this widespread blurring of interpersonal communication into everyday practices of professional viability. This talk draws on nearly a decade of work to show how the pressure to be "authentic" in communicating with audiences, combined with the designs and materialities of new communication technologies, raises dialectic tensions that musicians - and many others - must manage as social media platforms become integral to professional life.
