ACM RecSys'18: Call for Tutorials (extended to June 4th)
by Yong Zheng 30 May '18

30 May '18

*** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers: ACM RecSys 2018 to be held in Vancouver, Canada, 2nd-7th October 2018 https://recsys.acm.org/recsys18/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Tutorials RecSys 2018 is pleased to invite proposals for tutorials to be given in conjunction with the conference. The goal of the tutorials is to provide conference attendees, including early-career researchers and researchers crossing-over from related disciplines, with an opportunity to learn about recommender system concepts and techniques. Tutorials also serve as a venue to share presenters’ expertise with the global community of recommender system researchers and practitioners. Tutorials focus on specific topics including, but not limited to: Introductions to recommender systems or to specific techniques (e.g., deep learning, feature engineering, tensorflow), Evaluation of recommender systems (e.g., system-centric and user-centric evaluation, experimentation), Context-aware (including location-based) recommender systems, Designing user experiences and interactions (e.g., virtual assistants), Ethical and legal aspects of recommender systems (e.g., privacy, fairness, accountability, transparency, and control of bias), Recommender systems facing real-world challenges (e.g., large-scale recommender systems or stream-based recommendation), Building and deploying recommender systems in specific domains (e.g., music, tourism, education, TV/video, jobs, enterprise, health, and/or fashion), Recommender systems supporting decision making, Recommendation for groups, tasks, or situations, including intent-aware recommender systems, Eliciting and learning user preferences, Recommender systems that take users’ emotional state, physical state, personality, trust, level-of-expertise, and/or cognitive readiness into account, Sensors and recommender systems (including mobile recommender systems and wearables), Intersections of recommender systems with other domains (e.g., information retrieval, machine learning, human computer interaction, or databases). This year we are experimenting with tutorials of variable length. You can choose to propose a regular tutorial of around 90 minutes, or suggest a half-day or full-day course. The length of your proposed tutorial should be commensurate with the presented materials and the projected interest of the RecSys community in the tutorial topic. We may work with accepted tutorial presenters to adjust the length of the tutorial. We actively encourage both researchers and industry practitioners to submit tutorial proposals that target different levels of expertise and different interests. We also encourage the submission of hands-on tutorials, for instance through the use of notebooks that combine theoretical concepts with practical exercises. You can get an idea for the interest of the RecSys community in different topics in the following survey carried out in RecSys 2017. You can still vote for the topics you would like to see this year. PROPOSAL FORMAT AND SUBMISSION The tutorial proposal should be a PDF document no more than 2 pages long, submitted by e-mail to tutorials2018(a)recsys.acm.org and organized as follows: Tutorial title. Tutorial length (tutorials are mostly 90 minutes, but we will consider half-day or full-day tutorials). Motivation for proposing this tutorial (why is it important for RecSys). Name, email address, and affiliation of tutorial instructor(s). Each listed presenter must present in person at the conference. Detailed bulleted outline of the tutorial (this point should take the most space). Targeted audience (introductory, intermediate, advanced) and prerequisite knowledge or skills. Importance of the topic for the RecSys community. Teaching experiences and history of prior tutorials by the presenter(s). List of relevant publications by the presenter(s). The following elements are not mandatory for the proposal, but encouraged: A short explanation of relationship of the tutorial proposal to “trends” at past RecSys conferences. A 2-minute video where the presenters introduce themselves and pitch their tutorial. Statement that the materials (slides, readings, and/or code) used/mentioned in the tutorial will be publicly available after the tutorial. Notebooks (e.g. iPython or Jupyter) that will be used during the course, if any. EVALUATION CRITERIA Tutorial proposals will be reviewed according to: ability of the tutorial to contribute to strengthening the foundations of recommender system research, or to broadening the field to look at important new challenges and techniques, experience and skill of the presenter(s), and the value of any materials released with the tutorial for the community. IMPORTANT DATES Tutorial proposal submission deadline: June 4th (extended deadline) Tutorial proposal notification: June 16th, 2018 Camera-ready tutorial summary deadline: August 6th, 2018 Deadlines refer to 23:59 (11:59pm) in the AoE (Anywhere on Earth) time zone. Graduate Conference CFP: Imagining Radical Futures, Princeton Oct. 5th
by EB Saldana 30 May '18

30 May '18

Dear AOIR, May be of interest to some in graduate programs - please circulate to anyone who might be interested. Thanks! EB *Imagining Radical Futures: Anthropological Potentialities?* Princeton Anthropology Graduate Conference October 5th, 2018 Princeton University *“The facts, alone, will not save us. Social change requires novel fictions that reimagine and rework* *all that is taken for granted about the current structure of society” (Benjamin 2016)* Anthropology has traditionally practiced restraint to speak only of what we know by virtue of "being there". Anthropologists have embraced the limitations of knowledge while demonstrating the power of attention to the specific and the particular, to contest positivism and moralizing normativity. Increasingly, governments and corporations attempt to mobilize anthropological knowledge about social change, geopolitical events, sustainability and resilience as a predictive tool. Yet productive recognition of indeterminacy that anthropological theory and practice evokes opens doors to the imaginary, the hopeful, the potential, and the dreamed. This conference will explore the potential of non-predictive futures in anthropological thought and the methodological complexities of imagining futures from the present. The binary of “dark anthropology” and “anthropology of the good” (Ortner 2016) belies complexities and tensions in anthropological approaches to social change: anthropology can report, embody, employ, and open toward or against utopian ideals. What are the implications of imaginative fictions for interlocutors, ethnographers, and the discipline? What radical possibilities can anthropology's fundamental questions about difference, relationality, and power open for us as we attempt to engage with futurity? We seek contributions from graduate students in anthropology whose work contributes to understanding imagined futures and extends the anthropological imagination. How can anthropology treat the imaginary as both a heuristic and a space of futurity? What social role can anthropology play in voicing potential futures otherwise? How can ethnographers engage differently with interlocutors’ imagined futures? Potential areas of inquiry include, but are not limited to, the following: - New technologies - Queering Progress - Novel Fictions/Anthrofictions - Nonhuman futures - Creativity and imagination - Climate and environment - Hope at the margins - Aging - Temporality of Markets - Policy Interested applicants should submit an individual abstract (250-300 words) in addition to brief biographies on or before July 1st to antcon(a)princeton.edu. Limited travel funds may be available TBD. *References* Benjamin, Ruha. “Racial Fictions, Biological Facts: Expanding the Sociological Imagination through Speculative Methods,” Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience: Vol 2, no. 2 (2016), 1-28. Public symposium with Richard Rogers, London, Thu 31st May 2018, 5pm
by Gray, Jonathan 30 May '18

30 May '18

Dear all, In case of interest, we have a public symposium with Richard Rogers (Chair in New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam and Director of Digital Methods Initiative) at King’s College London on “Repurposing social media for social research? Questions after the fake news debacle” coming up on this Thursday 31st May 2018, 5-6pm. There will be a talk with Richard, followed by questions and discussion with Cornelia Reyes Acosta, Alessandro Gandini and myself. See below and the following link for further details: http://repurposing-social-media.eventbrite.com/ Please feel free to share with friends and colleagues. All the best, Jonathan ## Repurposing social media for social research? Questions after the fake news debacle ## Thu 31 May 2018, 5-6pm ## Safra Lecture Theatre, King's Building, Strand Campus, King's College London ## Register: http://repurposing-social-media.eventbrite.com/ A symposium on the future of research with social media, with a public talk from Professor Richard Rogers, Chair in New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam, followed by questions and discussion with Cornelia Reyes Acosta, Alessandro Gandini and Jonathan Gray from the Department of Digital Humanities, King's College London. Social media data as source for empirical studies have recently come under renewed scrutiny, given the widespread deletion of Russian disinformation pages by Facebook as well as the suspension of Alt Right accounts by Twitter. Missing data is one issue, compounded by the fact that the ‘archives’ (CrowdTangle for Facebook and Gnip for Twitter) are also owned by the companies. Previously questions revolved around the extent to which corporate data collected for one purpose (e.g., advertising) could be employed by social science for another (e.g., political engagement). Social media data also could be said to be far from ‘good data’, since the platforms not only change and introduce new data fields (‘reactions’ on Facebook), but also increasingly narrow what’s available to researchers for privacy reasons. How to approach social media data these days? The symposium is an opportunity to debate the future of research with social media. Bio: Richard Rogers holds the Chair in New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam. He is Director of the Digital Methods Initiative, dedicated to the study of the ‘natively digital’ and online epistemologies. He is also the Academic Director of the Netherlands National Research School for Media Studies (RMeS). Among other works, Rogers is author of Information Politics on the Web (MIT Press, 2004), awarded the best book of the year by the American Society of Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T), and Digital Methods (MIT Press, 2013) awarded Outstanding Book of the Year from the International Communication Association (ICA). Rogers is a three-time Ford Fellow and has received research grants from the Soros Foundation, Open Society Institute, Mondriaan Foundation, MacArthur Foundation and Gates Foundation. -- Jonathan Gray | jonathangray.org<http://jonathangray.org/> | @jwyg<http://twitter.com/jwyg> Lecturer in Critical Infrastructure Studies Department of Digital Humanities King’s College London

Content Analysis of Historical Tweet Set
by f hodgkins 29 May '18

29 May '18

All- I am working on a qualitative content analysis of a historical tweet set from CrisisNLP from Imran et al.,(2016). http://crisisnlp.qcri.org/lrec2016/lrec2016.html I am using the California Earthquake dataset. The Tweets have been stripped down to the Day/Time/ Tweet ID and the content of the Tweet. The rest of the Twitter information is discarded. I am using is NVIVO- known for its power for content analysis -- However - I am finding NVIVO unwieldy for a data of this size (~250,000 tweets). I wanted each unique Tweet to function as its own case. But - Nvivo would crash everytime. I have 18G RAM and a Raid Array. I do not have a server - although I could get one. I am working and coding side by side in Excel and in NVIVO with my data in 10 large sections of .csv files, instead of individual cases- and this is working (but laborious). QUESTION: Do you have any suggestions for software for large-scale content analysis of Tweets? I Do not need SNA capabilities. Thank you very much, Fran Hodgkins Doctoral Candidate (currently suffering through Chapter 4) Grand Canyon University USA
