Dear Colleagues (Apologies for any cross-postings.) *You are cordially invited to submit to the workshop on Algorithmic Personalization & News (APEN 18) <https://apen18.hans-bredow-institut.de/> to be held at Stanford University on June 25th this year, in conjunction with the International Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM 18) <http://www.icwsm.org/2018/index.php>, a premier conference that brings together social scientists and computational methodologists in the study of online social media. * This workshop is intended to provide a platform to discuss the risks and opportunities of algorithmic personalization systems in the online news environments, and also to encourage design of auditing mechanisms for such news personalization algorithms. Our aim is to foster dialogue between the different communities interested in the topic by bringing together academics and researchers from the fields of computer science, media studies, journalism and communication sciences, as well as industry practitioners from mainstream media, social media organizations, and startups. *Main Themes of Discussion for the Workshop* The workshop program is structured around the two main themes of risks and opportunities of algorithmic personalization for news. Some relevant topics for each of these themes include (but are not limited to): *Theme I: Risks* - Societal risks of algorithmic personalization in relation to news - Auditing mechanisms for personalization in news dissemination and consumption pipeline - Developing systems for personalizing news while optimizing for other factors (e.g. opinion and topic diversity, news value, local interest, etc.) *Theme II: Opportunities* - Using personalization for increasing user engagement with current affairs or political news - Designing personalized recommendations for public service media - Leveraging geographic localization, or other user models for personalizing news *Submissions for the Workshop* We invite interested participants to submit *work-in-progress or position papers of up to 2 pages (excluding references)*. The workshop attendees will be invited based on the relevance of their submitted abstracts to the workshop’s agenda. CALL FOR PAPERS Global Digital Technology and Culture Conference August 17-18, 2018 Seoul, South Korea ________________________________________ In order to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Korean Association for Broadcasting and Telecommunication Studies (KABS) and to launch a new scholarly journal, KABS will hold a two-day conference with the general theme of “Global Digital Technology and Culture” in Seoul, South Korea, on August 17-18, 2018. The primary goal of the conference is to broadly discuss the changing digital technology environment and its cultural, social and/or psychological consequences from a global perspective. KABS will launch its international journal titled International Journal of Communication and Technology (tentatively with Routledge) in November 2018, and selected papers from the conference will be published in the inaugural issue of the newly launched journal. The new journal will focus on research on communication and technology with an international scope and diverse perspectives. It may cover any regions or countries, and all communication research topics related to the growing importance of technology will be considered for review, as long as they have international foci. Research papers relating to the general theme of Global Digital Technology and Culture, include but not limited to the following specific areas and topics: • Global communication and social change • Global media industries • Mass communication • Interpersonal communication • Intercultural communication • Journalism studies • Health communication • New media technologies • and Critical cultural studies Studies employing historical and comparative analysis focused on international perspectives as well as contemporary processes such as globalization are also welcome. Notification of accepted abstracts will be sent around the end of May. The authors of accepted abstracts should submit a completed paper by July 20, 2018. Completed papers are limited to 25 pages in length (Times New Roman, double-spaced excluding references, tables, and figures, with 12-font size and 1-inch margins). Completed papers will include a brief abstract (less than 200 words). Two anonymous reviewers will evaluate submitted abstracts with respect to quality of the extended abstract, including rigor of suggested theory and method, and significance of the expected findings. Three separate files are required for paper submission: (1) Title page, (2) Extended abstract, and (3) Manuscript (for accepted abstracts only). Title page: A separate title page is required. The title page should include the following information: • Paper title • 3 to 6 keywords • All author names, affiliations, and departments listed in the order • Corresponding author and contact information including e-mail address Extended abstract: For blind reviews of submissions, all author identification should be removed from the document except for the title page. Readings on online persuasion

Hello all, I am working on a module on online persuasion for an MSc module. It will cover the basics of persuasion and also look at some specific areas. The specific areas I want to cover are consumer persuasion, social engineering/hacking, online radicalisation, and political persuasion. I’m looking for some decent intro readings for those areas - bearing in mind that we won’t be able to cover it all in depth - it’s more of an overview that they can go further into themselves. If any of you have suggestions I’d be very grateful. If any of those are from underrepresented groups of researchers (BEM/women etc) that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance. Hoping to see AoIR community contributions to our minitrack at HICSS! ------------------------------------------------- CFP: HICSS Social Networking and Communities ------------------------------------------------- 52nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) January 8-11, 2019, Grand Wailea, Maui, Hawaii PAPERS DUE: June 15, 2018 via the HICSS conference system This HICSS minitrack has been ongoing since 2003. The focus is primarily on social media and other social technologies and their interrelations with networks and communities (online and offline). We call for papers that address social networks and communities supported and/or complemented by social media for work, learning, socializing, economic and/or political processes, and/or that address theory, design, practices, use or evaluation of such social media use. This year we are adding an interest in viral phenomena within social networks. In order to leverage an interdisciplinary perspective and enable dialogue between social and technological disciplines, papers may be motivated by a broad range of theory-driven or data-driven perspectives and methods, including for example but not limited to social network analysis, content analysis, ethnographic investigations, and agent-based simulations. We particularly encourage papers that: * advance our understanding of social network growth, formation, structure and outcomes through social media; * explore how socio-technical affordances relate to social media use and outcomes; * examine how information and misinformation spread in social media and networks, and how algorithms, bots, and social media design affect this spread; * evaluate design of social media technologies and practices for effective community development and maintenance; and * develop theories, models and principles of social media design, use and outcomes for networks and communities. We are particularly interested in papers that explore new models, theories and methods rather than re-applying and repeating established results.
