by Amelia Acker 03 Jun '18

03 Jun '18

Please forgive cross-posting *** Dear Colleagues, Please consider submitting a paper to the Critical and Ethical Studies of Digital and Social Media Minitrack at HICSS 52, which will take place January 8-11, 2019 in Maui. Paper submissions are due on *June 15*. This minitrack focuses on two themes: a) studies that critically interrogate how and when digital and social media (DSM) support existing power structures or realign power structures affecting underrepresented or marginalized groups, and b) studies that raise awareness of or illustrate the ethical issues associated with doing research on digital and social media. Papers may range in approach/methods and may explore the following topics and more: - Effects of DSM use in marginalized youth and other specified communities - Perpetuation of gender, race, ethno-nationalist and faith-based hostility and bullying in online environments - Presence of distinct values and worldviews in the design of DSM related hardware and software technologies - Challenges surrounding the relationship between data collection, use, and dissemination and DSM participation - Issues at the intersection of globalization and DSM development and use - Non-traditional, participatory, and/or experimental research methods developed for social media scholarship The minitrack seeks both conceptual and empirical approaches to the theme. Conceptual papers would contribute theoretical examinations of key sociotechnical issues surrounding social and digital media use and research. Empirical papers would draw on original studies of digital and social media that illustrate the critical or ethical dimensions of digital infrastructures, data creation and collection, social and digital media design, or metadata use and reuse. Please see the official minitrack CFP <http://hicss.hawaii.edu/tracks-52/digital-and-social-media/#critical-and-et…> for more information, and feel free to contact me or my co-chair Tonia Sutherland (tsuther(a)hawaii.edu) with any questions or ideas. CfP: ComplexRec 2018 (2nd Workshop on Recommendation in Complex Scenarios)
by Toine Bogers 01 Jun '18

01 Jun '18

======================================================== SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS 2nd Workshop on Recommendation in Complex Scenarios (ComplexRec 2018) http://complexrec2018.aau.dk Co-located with RecSys 2018, Vancouver, Canada October 7, 2018 ======================================================== --------------- Important dates --------------- * Paper submission deadline: July 16, 2018 * Notification of acceptance: August 13, 2018 * Camera-ready deadline: August 27, 2018 * ComplexRec 2018 Workshop: October 7, 2018 ------------------------ Description & Objectives ------------------------ Over the past decade, recommendation algorithms for ratings prediction and item ranking have steadily matured. However, these state-of-the-art algorithms are typically applied in relatively straightforward scenarios. In reality, recommendation is often a more complex problem: it is usually just a single step in the user's more complex background need. These background needs can often place a variety of constraints on which recommendations are interesting to the user and when they are appropriate. However, relatively little research has been done on these complex recommendation scenarios. The ComplexRec 2018 workshop aims to address this by providing an interactive venue for discussing approaches to recommendation in complex scenarios that have no simple one-size-fits-all solution. It is the follow-up to the successful first ComplexRec workshop at RecSys 2017. ------------------ Topics of interest ------------------ We invite original contributions about recommendation in complex scenarios. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Task-based recommendation -- Approaches that take the user's background tasks and needs into account when generating recommendations * Feature-driven recommendation -- Techniques for eliciting, capturing and integrating rich information about user preferences for specific product features * Constraint-based recommendation -- Approaches that successfully combine state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms with complex knowledge-based or constraint-based optimization * Query-driven recommendation -- Techniques for eliciting and incorporating rich information about the user's recommendation need (e.g., need for accessibility, engagement, socio-cultural values, familiarity, etc.) in addition to the standard user preference information * Interactive recommendation -- Techniques for successfully capturing, weighting, and integrating continuous user feedback into recommender systems, both in situations of sparse and rich user interaction * Context-aware recommendation -- Methods for the extraction and integration of complex contextual signals for recommendation * Complex data sources -- Approaches to dealing with complex data sources and how to infer user preferences from these sources * Evaluation & validation -- Approaches to the evaluation and validation of recommendation in complex scenarios ----------- Submissions ----------- We encourage authors to submit short papers and position papers of 2-4 pages in length dedicated to any aspect of recommendation in complex scenarios. Accepted submissions will then be invited for short 10-minute presentations with equal time for discussion. Evaluation criteria for acceptance will include novelty, diversity, significance for theory/practice, quality of presentation, and the potential for sparking interesting discussion at the workshop. All submitted papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee. At least one author of each accepted paper must attend the workshop. All submissions should be in English and should not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Papers should be formatted in the ACM Proceedings Style (https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) and submitted via EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=complexrec2018) Submissions will be published in the workshop proceedings (CEUR-WS). ---------- Organizers ---------- * Toine Bogers (toine(a)hum.aau.dk) Aalborg University Copenhagen, Denmark * Marijn Koolen (marijn.koolen(a)di.huc.knaw.nl) KNAW Humanities Cluster, the Netherlands * Bamshad Mobasher (mobasher(a)cs.depaul.edu) DePaul University, USA * Casper Petersen (cap(a)sampension.dk) Sampension, Denmark * Alan Said (alansaid(a)acm.org) University of Skövde, Sweden For further questions, please contact a member of the organizing committee.

Hello all, Long time lurker, first time sender. I am writing to ask for help in recruiting subjects for a research project I am working on examining the role that information and knowledge play in the professional design of websites. I am looking to talk with individuals for whom the aesthetic design of websites, page, or apps constitutes 50% or more of their work tasks, or who spend 50% or more of their time managing the aesthetic design work of others on web based projects. Participation consists of an approximately 45 minute interview and sketching activity, and will be conducted via Skype or similar platform. If you have any students who are web designers or who have gone on to work in web design, could you please forward the following link to them: https://goo.gl/forms/n1MrhraV5eD1jcmW2. It goes to an intake form I’ve created to help me manage the study. I’ll follow up directly after they’ve filled it out. If you have any questions regarding the study or my work feel free to reply off list and I will do my best to answer them. Best, T. Zachary Frazier, MLIS Doctoral Candidate College of Information and Communication University of South Carolina PS. If you are an active web designer, I would love to talk with you as well. Special issue on 'data activism'
by Stefania Milan 31 May '18

31 May '18

Dear colleagues, we are proud to present to you a special issue on ‘data activism’ of Krisis: Journal for Contemporary Philosophy, edited by myself and Lonneke van der Velden (University of Amsterdam). Our goal was to ‘reverse’ data politics, and the various articles take up the challenge from different disciplinary perspectives. And Krisis is an open-access journal, so the articles are and will remain free to download! Authors include Jonathan Gray, Helen Kenney, Lina Dencik, Stefan Baack, Miren Gutierrez, Leah Horgan and Paul Dourish, plus as many as three book reviews. See the brief description below. The whole issue is accessible from http://krisis.eu <http://krisis.eu/>. ENJOY and SHARE! Best, Stefania === Issue 1/2018: Data activism Digital data increasingly plays a central role in contemporary politics and public life. Citizen voices are increasingly mediated by proprietary social media platforms and are shaped by algorithmic ranking and re-ordering, but data informs how states act, too. This special issue wants to shift the focus of the conversation. Non-governmental organizations, hackers, and activists of all kinds provide a myriad of ‘alternative’ interventions, interpretations, and imaginaries of what data stands for and what can be done with it. Jonathan Gray starts off this special issue by suggesting how data can be involved in providing horizons of intelligibility and organising social and political life. Helen Kennedy's contribution advocates for a focus on emotions and everyday lived experiences with data. Lina Dencik puts forward the notion of ‘surveillance realism’ to explore the pervasiveness of contemporary surveillance and the emergence of alternative imaginaries. Stefan Baack investigates how data are used to facilitate civic engagement. Miren Gutiérrez explores how activists can make use of data infrastructures such as databases, servers, and algorithms. Finally, Leah Horgan and Paul Dourish critically engage with the notion of data activism by looking at everyday data work in a local administration. Further, this issue features an interview with Boris Groys by Thijs Lijster, whose work Über das Neue enjoys its 25th anniversary last year. Lastly, three book reviews illuminate key aspects of datafication. Patricia de Vries reviews Metahavens’ Black Transparency; Niels van Doorn writes on Platform Capitalism by Nick Srnicek and Jan Overwijk comments on The Entrepeneurial Self by Ulrich Bröckling. === Stefania Milan Associate Professor of New Media and Digital Culture, University of Amsterdam | https://stefaniamilan.net Principal Investigator, DATACTIVE (ERC Starting Grant 639379) | https://data-activism.net @annliffey | @data_ctive +31627875425 | +31(0)205252416
