CfP - Virtual Reality for Pro-Social Attitude Change - Special issue New Media & Society
by Tanja Aitamurto 19 Jun '18

19 Jun '18

Dear all, We are looking for papers about virtual reality for pro-social attitude change, to be considered for a special issue of New Media & Society. The approaches can be multidisciplinary and stem from several disciplines, including communication, psychology, digital humanities, and human-computer interaction. The submission procedure has two rounds: first *500 word abstracts by October 10, 2018,* and upon selection, a full paper by February 1, 2019. More information below. Please consider submitting and feel free to distribute the CfP, which is also available in this link. <http://bit.ly/VRSpIssue> Call for Papers: Special Issue of New Media & Society *Virtual Reality for Pro-Social Attitude Change* Guest editors - Tanja Aitamurto, Stanford University - Andrea Stevenson Won, Cornell University - Shuo Zhou, University of Colorado Tentative timeline - • Extended abstract submission deadline: October, 10, 2018 - • Notification on submitted abstracts: November 10, 2018 - • Article submission deadline: February 1, 2019 Call for Papers In the recent years, virtual reality (VR) has become a more common medium both in professional and personal consumer use. As a parallel development, the cost of producing and publishing VR content has become easier with new platforms such as YouTube Virtual Reality and Facebook 360°. VR is being produced, published and consumed more than ever, and as a result, virtual reality has permeated numerous domains. While entertainment and gaming remain the dominant contexts, VR is increasingly deployed also in a multitude of civic applications, including education, healthcare, and journalism. One common theme of these applications is using VR for pro-social attitude change. This potential is supported by decades of research showing that the traditional game-engine based VR may be a powerful tool for affecting people’s attitudes (Bailenson, 2018). With its immersive features, VR can help users to understand other people’s perspectives better compared with other media. Building on this work, the scholarly inquiry has expanded from traditional VR to cinematic virtual reality (CVR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), which combines several types of reality in one medium. The term XR refers to all aforementioned real-and-virtual combined environments. These developments create space for a multitude of research questions on VR. Many of the discussions about virtual reality center around its ability to change behavior, for good or ill. Such applications of VR may change or enhance users’ attitudes, leading them to contribute to society positively. This special issue calls for papers with both theoretical and empirical inquiries into the use of VR for pro-social attitude and/or behavioral change toward others. While there is much current interest in virtual reality as a tool for empathy driving prosocial behavior, we are particularly interested in empirical work which refines, defines or problematizes this concept. The research questions we are interested in include, but are not limited to the following: - • What is the role of VR, AR, and/or MR in contributing to pro-social attitude change? - • Under what circumstances does pro-social attitude change occur in VR? - • Under what circumstances might such interventions backfire? - • How can VR efficiently balance the sense of presence and pro-social attitude change? - • How should VR interfaces be designed to maximizing the positive effects of VR? - • What are the ethical aspects related to VR and pro-social attitude change? The approaches can be multidisciplinary and stem from several disciplines, including communication, psychology, digital humanities, and human-computer interaction. Information about submission Proposals should consist of an extended abstract of 500-750 words (not including references). The extended abstract should contain the key elements of the paper, including the problem statement with justifications, methodology and the main contribution of the submission. The proposal should also include an abbreviated bio of the authors that describes their main research interests and background. Please submit your proposal as a PDF to the e-mail address specialissuevr(a)gmail.com no later than October 10, 2018. By November 10, 2018, the authors will be notified whether their abstract has been selected, and consequently if they will be encouraged to develop and submit an article for peer review. Finally, full articles (8,000 words) will be due February 1, 2019, for full blind review, in accordance with the journal's peer-review procedure. The peer-reviews will determine whether the article is accepted for publication in the special issue. WOC/FEMMES JOB MARKET STUDY RECRUITMENT
by Apryl Williams 19 Jun '18

19 Jun '18

*Greetings! We are writing to invite people of color to participate in our research project exploring the academic job market experiences of cisgender and transgender women of color and nonbinary femmes/people of color who attended graduate school and/or applied for jobs within the United States in the last five years (since the 2013-2014 school year). We are also interested in people who are entering the job market this year (2018-2019). We are particularly interested in any experiences of microaggressions and how cisgender and transgender women of color and non-binary femmes/people of color prepared for, and coped with, being on the job market. Several studies have addressed the microaggressions and marginalized positions of women and people of color in academia, primarily as enrolled graduate students or employed full-time faculty. We hope to discover more details about the experiences of people of color seeking academic positions and what kinds of networks/knowledge are produced in order to better facilitate success and professionalization on the job market. Participation in our study consists of completing this survey https://fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bEqukQUiEvV0s6h <https://fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bEqukQUiEvV0s6h> and circulating this survey to colleagues of color who may be in our target population (we would like to hear from people in as many disciplines as possible). If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to contact the researchers: * *Dr. Apryl A. Williams (570-372-4758, williamsaa(a)susqu.edu <williamsaa(a)susqu.edu>) * *Dr. Shantel G. "Drones to Smart Homes" and "Data Justice" PhD scholarships
by Heather Ford 19 Jun '18

19 Jun '18

I’m excited to announce that I will be co-supervising up to four very generous and well-supported PhD scholarships at the University of New South Wales (Sydney) on the themes of “Living with Pervasive Media Technologies from Drones to Smart Homes” and “Data Justice: Technology, policy and community impact”. Please contact me directly if you have any questions. Expressions of Interest are due before 20 July, 2017 at the following link: https://www.2025.unsw.edu.au/apply/scientia-phd-scholarships/data-justice. Many thanks! Best, Heather. --------------------------- Dr Heather Ford Senior Lecturer, School of Arts & Media<https://sam.arts.unsw.edu.au/>, University of New South Wales w: hblog.org<http://hblog.org/> / EthnographyMatters.net<http://ethnographymatters.net/> / t: @hfordsa<http://www.twitter.com/hfordsa> University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) Scientia PhD scholarships for 2019 Living with Pervasive Media Technologies from Drones to Smart Homes https://www.2025.unsw.edu.au/apply/scientia-phd-scholarships/living-pervasi… Digital assistants, smart devices, drones and other autonomous and artificial intelligence technologies are rapidly changing work, culture, cities and even the intimate spaces of the home. They are 21st century media forms: recording, representing and acting, often in real-time. This project investigates the impact of living with autonomous and intelligent media technologies. It explores the changing situation of media and communication studies in this expanded field. How do these media technologies refigure relations between people and the world? What policy challenges do they present? How do they include and exclude marginalized peoples? How are they transforming media and communications themselves? (Supervisory team: Michael Richardson, Andrew Murphie, Heather Ford) Data Justice: Technology, policy and community impact https://www.2025.unsw.edu.au/apply/scientia-phd-scholarships/data-justice-t… With growing concerns that data mining, ubiquitous surveillance and automated decision making can unfairly disadvantage already marginalised groups, this research aims to identify policy areas where injustices are caused by data- or algorithm-driven decisions, examine the assumptions underlying these technologies, document the lived experiences of those who are affected, and explore innovative ways to prevent such injustices. Innovative qualitative and digital methods will be used to identify connections across community, policy and technology perspectives on ‘big data’. The project is expected to deepen social engagement with disadvantaged communities, and strengthen global impact in promoting social justice in a datafied world. Call for Papers - (In)Equalities and Social (In)Visibilities in the Digital Age – Journal Interações
by Inês Amaral 19 Jun '18

19 Jun '18

[With apologies for cross posting] *Call for Papers - (In)Equalities and Social (In)Visibilities in the Digital Age – Journal Interações* The influence of new technologies in public and private spheres of society, rather than a reformulation, has given rise to a new social field and directly interferes with how we perceive the world, relate to it and others. In Pierre Bourdieu's (2001) theory, field arises as a configuration of socially distributed relations. Progressively, a universe of socialisation has emerged and consolidated: cyberspace. Although virtual, it exists and produces effects. It can be defined as the space boosted by the different digital communication platforms and assumes itself as an individual communication model, allowing the receiver to be simultaneously emitter. Space of flows (Castells, 1996), cyberspace translates the social dimension of the Internet enabling the diffusion of communication/information on a global scale. This causes an intense process of inclusion and exclusion of people in the network. The reference to info-inclusive and info-excluded societies of the digital scenario is imperative when it is reflected in the geography of the new socio-technological spaces. The dynamics of these territories are directly associated with the way social, demographic, economic and technological variables condition each other, revealing the potential for dissemination of information and knowledge through technologies. In this special issue of the journal Interações we propose a reflection on (In)Equalities and Social (In)Visibilities in the Digital Age. Unpublished works that present research results and/or theoretical reflection on this theme are accepted (although this special issue is not limited to these topics): - Digital and social and economic inequalities in different geographical contexts; - Promoting equality through digital; - Visibilities and social invisible created by movements of exclusion or social inclusion, digital, media, economic, etc.; - Invisible social groups in the digital age; - Digital literacy and vulnerable social groups; - Digital as a geographical barrier; - Conditioning created by technology for the individual in a social context. Deadline for submission of articles: June 25 Notification of acceptance: July 10 Publication: July 31 The articles must be sent via email: interacoes(a)ismt.pt Any questions should be addressed to the same email. Guidelines and other instructions for authors can be found on the journal's website: http://www.interacoes-ismt.com/index.php/revista Interações is a scientific journal of Instituto Superior Miguel Torga with a biannual edition. The journal publishes original papers that present research results and/or theoretical reflection in the different fields of social sciences and humanities. From an interdisciplinary editorial perspective, Interações' primary objective is to foster the reflection and diffusion of knowledge in the areas of Social and Human Sciences, with a particular focus on Portuguese and Latin American spaces. The journal accepts articles of scientific investigation, reviews and critical essays.

Platforms or services that advance fundamental human rights
by Ansgar Koene 19 Jun '18

19 Jun '18

Hi all, I've been asked to contribute some suggestions to a book on digital/social media that are being used to advance fundamental human rights, including privacy. The question is: "Can you please name for me what you consider to be the top 5-10 apps, platforms, or services . . . created by NGOs or the private sector . . . that have done the most to actually protect privacy. We know Telegram is at the top of the list. But what else would you put there (and why?)". Does anyone have a top-5 they would want to share? (ideally with some kind of article reference that highlights why this is a valuable platform/service for advancing human rights.
