Pressure groups and influence on Twitter

Hi members I am currently supervising a PhD student who is examining how pressure groups like NPOs get their talking points into the mainstream media and public domain through using social media, especially Twitter. I was hoping members could provide some guidelines on useful literature to frame this discussion. The student is looking at public spheres and networked publics, but this seems not to engage sufficiently with the idea of actively strategizing around constructing messages to be taken up by the public. I was hoping there is literature that takes theories of agenda setting and influence/persuasion into the social media realm. I will really appreciate your suggestions. Family as a form of social coexistence is widespread in political, cultural and media debates; cultural politics with respect to family can stir elections, fill media content, sell products and (re)construct socio-cultural and -political discourses. The presentation of families in the media is contextual, culturally encoded and socially determined in accordance with or opposition to predominant cultural politics and political ideologies. The International Journal of Media and Culture (The IJMCP) invites contributions to the June 2019 special issue dedicated to “Family and the Media: Cultural Politics and Public Narratives.” The focus of this issue is on the analysis of (re)representations of family matters in diverse media. We ask: How and with which effect are family/families constructed/reflected in cultural politics and public narratives, in media as diverse as TV-series and film, (print) journalism and photography, blogs and microblogs (Twitter), social media apps (Snapchat or Instagram), radio and podcasts, or computer games? How do these media narratives construct, shape and/or influence public (political) discourses? The successful candidate will have the academic credentials required for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor. Salary will be negotiable, according to qualifications and experience. The ideal candidate will be a recognized expert in the relationship between media, technology, and democracy. In particular, the candidate will have a deep understanding of how our evolving technological infrastructure -- including digital platforms, advertising technologies, and artificial intelligence -- are driving changes in both the journalism and the broader media ecosystem. The holder of the Chair will also be actively engaged in the policy process, with an appreciation for how the relevant policies are developed, promoted, and implemented. The candidate will have an appreciation for the value of public scholarship in this area, and how it can both supplement peer-reviewed work and enhance the realm of policy making. And yet analyses and applications of those same data can do real harm. Algorithms used for setting bail can perpetuate racial biases. Calculations employed to improve the efficiency of postal delivery may divert already-scarce resources away from impoverished areas. Enhancing political engagement on social media platforms can promote misinformation, polarization, and distrust. And the list-unfortunately-goes on. How can we maximize the effectiveness of, and minimize potential harms resulting from, the use of data in contemporary democracies? One important answer is to bring more social science into our data practices. Social science perspectives permit a deeper understanding of the social and political processes that generate data-allowing us to more critically unpack what the data represent. And social science research can tell us a great deal about the likely effects of various applications resulting from data analysis. With this in mind, the Data in Democracy Summer School will bring together a select group of practitioners and academics for five days to learn about and apply crucial insights from the social sciences concerning the forms, functions, and impacts of data in democratic societies. Participants will receive a series of lectures with built-in practical exercises, engage in social and networking activities, and, on the final day, take part in a "hackathon" that capitalizes on participants' diverse backgrounds and experiences as they work together on a problem using real-world data. We are seeking participants from a wide range of fields and backgrounds, and we encourage anyone who holds at least a bachelor's degree (or equivalent work experience) and who works with quantitative data to apply.
