IEEE International Conference on Fog and Edge Computing (ICFEC 2018) (Deadline: Dec. 20, 2017)
by Zhuozhao Li 17 Dec '17

17 Dec '17

[We apologize if you receive multiple copies of this CFP.] ==================================================================== 2nd IEEE International Conference on Fog and Edge Computing (ICFEC 2018) May 1-3, 2018, Washington DC, USA URL: http://www.cloudbus.org/fog/icfec2018/ In conjunction with IEEE/ACM CCGrid 2018 (18th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster, Cloud and Grid Computing: https://ccgrid2018.seas.gwu.edu/) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Keynote speaker: Prof. Kenneth P. Birman, Computer Science, Cornell University. Building Smart Memories and Cloud Services with Derecho ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers **************** (Papers due: extended to Dec. 20, 2017) ************* The organizing committee is delighted to invite you to Washington DC for the 2nd IEEE International Conference on Fog and Edge Computing. The Conference will be held as part of/in conjunction with IEEE/ACM CCGrid 2018, which is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and ACM (Association for Computing Machinery). Call for papers The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm promises to make "things" such as physical objects with sensing capabilities and/or attached with tags, mobile objects such as smart phones and vehicles, consumer electronic devices and home appliances such as fridge, television, healthcare devices, as part of the Internet environment. In cloud-centric IoT applications, the sensor data from these "things" is extracted, accumulated and processed at the public/private clouds, leading to significant latencies. To satisfy the ever increasing demand for Cloud Computing resources from emerging applications such as Internet-of-Things (IoT), academics and industry experts are now advocating for going from large-centralized Cloud Computing infrastructures to micro data centres located at the edge of the network. These micro data centres are often closer to a user (geographically and in access latency) compared to the centralised cloud data centre. The aim of utilizing such edge resources is to off load computation that would have "traditionally" been carried out at the cloud data centre to a resource that is closer to a user or edge devices. This vision also acknowledges the variation in network latency from an end user to cloud data centre. Whereas the network around a data centre is often high capacity and speed, that near the user device may have variably properties (in terms of resilience, bandwidth, latency, etc). Referred to as "Fog/Edge computing", this paradigm is expected to improve the agility of cloud service deployments in addition to bringing computing resources closer to end-users. On the one hand, the development of Fog and Edge clouds includes dedicated facilities, operating system, network and middleware techniques to build and operate such micro data centres that host virtualized computing resources. On the other hand, the use of Fog and Edge clouds requires extension to current programming models and propose new abstractions that will allow developers to design new applications that take benefit from such massively distributed systems. The use of this approach also opens up other challenges in: security and privacy (as a user now needs to "trust" every micro data centre they interact with), support for resource management for mobile users who transfer session from one micro data centre to another, and support for "embedding" such micro data centres into devices (e.g. cars, buildings, etc.). The conference seeks to attract contributions covering both theory and practice of any of the aforementioned challenges, from the management software stack to domain-specific applications. Topics of interest (but are not limited to): Data centers and infrastructures for Fog/Edge Computing Middleware for Fog/Edge infrastructures Programming models and runtime systems for Fog/Edge Computing Scheduling for Fog/Edge infrastructures Fog/Edge storage Monitoring/metering of Fog/Edge infrastructures Fog/Edge Computing applications Latency/locality-critical applications Legal issues in Fog/Edge clouds Security and privacy - including support for new cryptographic approaches Modelling Fog/Edge environments - e.g. using process networks, agent-based models, Peer-2-Peer systems, etc. Performance monitoring and modelling Applications of Fog/Edge Computing Organisation: General Chairs: Rajkumar Buyya, University of Melbourne, Australia Omer Rana, Cardiff University, UK Program Chairs: Massimo Villari, University of Messina, Italy Haiying Shen, University of Virginia, USA Publication Chairs: Maria Fazio, University of Messina, Italy Jia Rao, The University of Texas at Arlington, USA Steering Committee Rajkumar Buyya, University of Melbourne, Australia Adrien Lebre (Inria, France) Omer Rana, Cardiff University, UK Anthony Simonet (Inria, France) Haiying Shen, University of Virginia, USA Massimo Villari, University of Messina, Italy For more information on the organization, see organization page. Berkman Klein Center at Harvard Now Accepting Applications for 18-19 Fellowships
by Daniel Oyolu 15 Dec '17

15 Dec '17

Hello Air-L Community! I'm the Core Program Coordinator at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University <https://cyber.harvard.edu/> and we've just announced our open call for fellowship applications <https://cyber.harvard.edu/getinvolved/fellowships/opencall20182019> for the 2018-2019 academic year. We're a public interest research center and community working to explore the Internet and new digital developments, touching a broad range of topics I know are of great import to people in the this community. Fellowships at the Center are opportunities for those who wish to spend 2018-2019 in residence in Cambridge, MA as part of the our vibrant community of research and practice, and who seek to engage in collaborative, cross-disciplinary, and cross-sectoral exploration of some of the Internet's most important and compelling issues. Fellows are supported in an inviting and playful intellectual environment - we have community activities designed to foster inquiry and risk-taking, to identify and expose common threads across fellows’ individual activities, and to bring fellows into conversation with the faculty directors, employees, and broader community at the Berkman Klein Center. We invite applications from people working on a broad range of opportunities and challenges related to Internet and society, which may overlap with ongoing work at the Center and may expose our community to new opportunities and approaches. We encourage applications from scholars, practitioners, innovators, engineers, artists, and others committed to understanding and advancing the public interest who come from -- and have interest in -- countries industrialized or developing, with ideas, projects, or activities in all phases on a spectrum from incubation to reflection. To make fellowships a possibility for as wide a range of applicants as possible, in the 2018-2019 academic year we will award a small number of stipends to incoming fellows. This funding is intended to support people from communities who are underrepresented in fields related to Internet and society, who will contribute to the diversity of the Berkman Klein Center’s research and activities, and who have financial need. *Applications will be accepted until Wednesday January 31, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.* I invite you to check out our full call <https://cyber.harvard.edu/getinvolved/fellowships/opencall20182019>, which has more information about our community activities and the application process. by Joly MacFie 14 Dec '17

14 Dec '17

You probably are familiar with, or have heard of, the Chatham House Rule, which protects the anonymity of discussants. Fortunately that has not been invoked for this, thus we are able to webcast what promises to be very good session. Note the participation, not only of ISOC's Sally Wentworth, but also Marina Kaljurand of Estonia, where there recently has been a crisis of confidence <https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2017/09/security_flaw_i.html> in the crypto behind their national ID card. 1pm NYC time. Open Captions. [image: livestream] <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/securitization/> Today, *Thursday 14 December 2017* the *Internet Society <https://internetsociety.org/>* and *Chatham House <https://www.chathamhouse.org/event/do-we-still-trust-internet>* will host a panel discussion *Do We Still Trust the Internet? <https://www.internetsociety.org/events/chatham-house-panel-discussion-do-we…>*in London. Over the past few years, there has been a clear shift towards greater ‘securitization’ of the Internet, where security is less about personal data integrity and network resilience, and more about national security and political control. This is evident through the practice of Internet shutdowns, data localization policies, attacks on the multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance and encryption backdoors. At this event, held in partnership with the Internet Society, participants will discuss the trend towards ‘securitization’, its implications and how to strengthen trust in the Internet, Participants: ** *Marina Kaljurand*, Chair, Global Commission on the Stability of Cyberspace; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Estonia (2015-16); *Sally Wentworth*, Vice President of Global Policy Development, Internet Society; *Patricia Lewis*, Research Director, International Security Department, Chatham House. Moderator: *Emily Taylor*, Associate Fellow, International Security and Editor, Journal of Cyber Policy, Chatham House.
