Incidental findings policies for internet research
by Jill Walker Rettberg 08 Dec '17

08 Dec '17

Have any of you had to write an incidental findings policy for a research ethics review? The ERC wants this for the ethnographic part of a project where involving fieldwork and interviews with people doing cell phone photography in order to understand everyday use of machine vision (e.g. algorithmic image filters, image recognition algorithms etc). The literature I've found on "incidental findings" is mostly medical - if you're doing brain imaging to understand ADHD and discover a brain tumour, that’s an incidental finding and you need to have a policy for what to do. This kind of incidental finding is extremely unlikely for an ethnography of internet photographers. If this is all the ERC means, I can probably just say there is little risk of incidental findings that affect the informants’ medical or psychological well-being. The exception would be if a research participant appeared to be suicidal, which certainly could happen – Terri Senft describes this exact thing in her book Camgirls: Celebrity and Community in the Age of Social Networks (2008). So what is a good way to craft a policy for a researcher who suspects an informant is suicidal? And are there other health/well-being related incidental findings that internet researchers should consider? More complicatedly, my university research ethics advisor also suggests I should have a policy for what to do if the researcher is looking through a participant’s social media feed or photos on their camera roll with them and sees child pornography or evidence of a crime – or if they see something problematic while doing fieldwork in an online forum or at a meetup. Should this be reported to the police? Or should one protect the informant? And where does one draw the line? The suggestion from my university is "In the informed consent form all informants will be informed about the researcher’s obligations to report issues of misconduct" - but this seems obviously far too broad, "misconduct" can mean almost anything. Perhaps actual crimes should be reported though. Though heck, reporting seeing a photo of someone smoking a joint or something seems rather different from finding child pornography in a feed. The purpose of the research in this case is NOT to understand any kind of crime or "misconduct", but to understand the ways we understand, use and are affected by algorithmic images and machine vision. The AoIR ethics guidelines (https://aoir.org/reports/ethics2.pdf) don’t mention these situations, though they include so many other useful considerations. I haven't found ANY literature citing reports on “misconduct” or crimes as related to incidental findings, although it's probably a good idea to have a policy if this kind of situation were to crop up. I know ethnographers have thought about these things for ages and written about them too - but maybe not as an "incidental findings policy"? Does anyone here have knowledge they could share? Special Issue on Mutual Shaping of Human-Robot Interaction
by Somaya Ben Allouch 07 Dec '17

07 Dec '17

Special issue: The Mutual Shaping of Human-Robot Interaction Topic overview Studies in human-robot interaction have shown that, when robots enter different contexts of our everyday lives, they influence and change those contexts beyond their intended use purpose alone. Social scientists have referred to this process as “mutual shaping” of technology and society. Mutual shaping implies that technological and societal developments do not proceed in parallel, or in a linear progression from technological development to societal application, but rather that technology and society continuously influence and (re)shape each other. Society changes as a direct and indirect result of the implementation of technology, which itself is created based on society’s (or a particular segment of society’s) wants, needs, beliefs, and practices. The mutual shaping of technology and society approach focuseson analyzing how social and cultural factors influence the way technologies are designed, implemented , used, and evaluated, as well as how technologies affect our construction of social values and meanings. Call for Papers The aim of this special issue is to collect an overview of theoretical and empirical state-of-the-art research contributions on lessons learned about the mutual shaping of robots and society. Therefore, theInternational Journal of Social Robotics invites researchers from the many disciplines and approaches that intersect with the development and evaluation of robot systems (e.g. human-robot interaction, human-computer interaction, human factors, engineering, computer sciences, (interactive) design, sociology, communication science, anthropology, psychology, etc .) to submit to this Special Issue. We invite a diversity of topics from researchers and practitioners from a wide variety of fields focusing on how social factors affect whether people choose to use robots, and (or) how robot design factors affect thesocial contexts in which robots are used. Topics include (but not limited to): • Human-robot (non)adoption and (non)use • Human-robot interaction • Mutual shaping of robots and society • Evaluation of robot applications and contexts of use • Socially intelligent robotics • Multimodal assessment technologies • Design of robotics systems • Social analysis of robotics • Social cognitive systems To submit your paper, login to the journal’s editorial system: [1]http://www.editorial manager.com/soro/default.aspx When submitting your papers, please select the option “SI: The Mutual Shaping of Human-Robot Interaction” from the “Choose article type” pull-down menu. CFP: Research Infrastructures, Digital Tools and New Directions in STS Research
by Lindsay Poirier 06 Dec '17

06 Dec '17

Brad Fidler and I are organizing a panel at next year's 4S meetings (August 29 - September 1, 2018) that discusses new digital research infrastructures for STS and conceptualizes possibilities for new collaborations between STS researchers and computer scientists. Please consider submitting an abstract by February 1, 2018 here <https://convention2.allacademic.com/one/ssss/4s18/>. 4S 2018 Sydney, Australia August 29 – September 1, 2018 *Theme*: TRANSnational STS *Panel: Research Infrastructures, Digital Tools and New Directions in STS Research* *Organizers*: Lindsay Poirier, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Bradley Fidler, Stevens Institute of Technology Increasingly, oral histories, field notes, and other qualitative materials produced in the humanities are being understood as humanities “data.” Rapid advances in data science are driving much of this change, provoking humanists to think through how to critically and ethically approach data management and to explore experimental possibilities for sharing, mining, and interpreting humanities data. This panel will explore possibilities for initiating new conversations with computer and data scientists regarding opportunities and challenges for producing information infrastructures and digital tools to support humanistic research. This task is not without precedent. On a prosaic level, Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) and the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) both originated in efforts by computer science to answer questions that long challenged humanistic scholars. On the level of tools, humanists rely on Optical Character Recognition (OCR), databases, and other information technologies that originated in STEM. However, collaborative efforts between computer scientists and humanists to produce digital infrastructures and tools sensitive to the assumptions and commitments that guide humanistic research have only emerged recently (through domains such as the digital humanities and critical code studies). Having long assessed the epistemic assumptions designed into systems of knowledge production, STS is uniquely well positioned within the humanities to contribute critical insight to such conversations. This panel seeks to bring together transnational STS scholars interested in: - assessing, critiquing, and advancing research infrastructures and digital tools for humanistic data management and analysis and; - identifying and evaluating possibilities for new collaborations between humanists and STEM researchers in this area. Open panel paper submissions should be in the form of abstracts of up to 250 words. They should include the paper’s main arguments, methods, and contributions to STS. When submitting papers to open panels on the abstract submission platform, you will select the Open Panel you are submitting to. Papers submitted to an open session will be reviewed by the open session organizers and will be given first consideration for that session. Papers not included in the session to which they were submitted will be considered for other sessions. Abstracts can be submitted here <https://convention2.allacademic.com/one/ssss/4s18/>. -- Lindsay Poirier PhD Candidate, HASS Fellow Lead Platform Architect, PECE RDA Data Share Fellow Science and Technology Studies | Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute poiril(a)rpi.edu | lindsaypoirier.com

Publications on ICT employees and employees who work in an augmented reality workplace
by Tammy Katsabian 06 Dec '17

06 Dec '17

Hi everyone, I hope this very-helpful mailing-list will assist me here.. (: I’m searching for publications on ICT employees who work only outside the employer’s premises – for instance, writing on costumer-services employees of Amazon or Microsoft who work from their home, many times from another country which is not the home-country of the company or the clients. I’m also interested in writing on employees who work from home by using augmented reality infrastructure, which connects them all to a shared virtual workplace. As far as I know there aren’t many articles on this last subject – so any reference here will be extremely helpful! Many thanks!!! Tammy Tammy Katsabian, Adv. PhD student, The Faculty of Law, The Hebrew University Research Fellow, The Cyber Security Research Center
