4S Sydney: Invisible Infrastucture
by Tim Jordan 05 Dec '17

05 Dec '17

Sally Wyatt and I are running this open panel stream for 4s, Sydney August 2018. Hope it's of interest to some of you. Tim 23. The invisible aspects of infrastructure Sally Wyatt, Maastricht University; Tim Jordan, Sussex University Infrastructure has long been of interest to STS scholars with different types (transport and communication) studied from different perspectives (historical, economic, ethnographic). One standard definition is that infrastructures are only noticed when they do not work. But, much infrastructure is very present; it’s hard to miss road and rail networks, and digital networks depend on massive investments in cables, satellites and servers. In this panel, we focus on the ‘invisible’ aspects of infrastructure, such as the work of maintenance done under the cover of darkness. Clinical research and testing often relies on the work of people and organisms not visible to patients. Knowledge work depends not only on classification (in labs, databases, libraries) but also on the work of technicians, software engineers and information professionals. But this is the point: what work is visible to whom, when and where? This is particularly the issue with the rise of the ‘gig economy’ in which the infrastructure of the internet becomes embedded within what are seemingly separate platforms. This panel aims to open up discussion about the invisible aspects of contemporary infrastructures of knowledge, consumption and production, by bringing together insights from STS about socio-technical ensembles together with ideas from (Marxist) sociology and political economy. Scholars are invited to reflect on the meaning of hidden infrastructures and the extent to which STS can recover the significance of infrastructure that has disappeared, because it is taken for granted, as in debates around the ‘post-digital’ that posit the internet as being ‘taken for granted’. CFP "Affordances and Architectures" 4S Sydney
by Jenny Davis 05 Dec '17

05 Dec '17

Submissions open! 4S Panel: "Affordances and Architectures: A Materialist Approach to Digital Design." (CFP below). 4S will take place August 29 - September 1 2018 (https://4s2018sydney.org/) 32. Affordances and Architectures: A Materialist Approach to Digital Design Jenny Davis, Australian National University; Timothy Graham (Australian National University); Baptiste Brossard (Australian National University) The design of technological objects and systems cannot be separated from the social structures within which they arise and operate. People and things are mutually influential and co-constitutive. This simple idea—that people shape technologies and technologies shape people—undergirds recent advancements in affordance theory and platform/infrastructure studies. Across disciplines, scholars are developing precise language and robust frameworks for understanding how social dynamics are built into socio-technical systems and how socio-technical systems structure social dynamics. These theoretical advancements arise through and alongside critical work on digitization and automation as an integral component of personal and public life (see especially Nagy and Neff 2015; Plantin et al. 2016; Davis and Chouinard 2017; and Evans et al. 2017). This panel seeks to implement, build on, and apply clear conceptualizations of “affordance” to better understand how the architectures of digital platforms and infrastructures take shape and exert force. An affordance perspective on digital architectures fosters questions about the social antecedents to design decisions as well as questions about social and institutional effects. For instance, what is the interplay between administrative medical interfaces and physician-patient relations? How do dating apps with “swipe” functions (re)formulate intimacy and courtship rituals? What agendas are embedded in digital maps, and how do these mappings inform experiences of space and place? How do vote-based visibility algorithms encourage or discourage dissent? We seek to strengthen a theoretical orientation towards the materialist study of digital design through serious treatment of technological affordances Open panel paper submissions should be in the form of abstracts of up to 250 words. They should include the paper’s main arguments, methods, and contributions to STS. When submitting papers to open panels on the abstract submission platform, you will select the Open Panel you are submitting to. Papers submitted to an open session will be reviewed by the open session organizers and will be given first consideration for that session. Papers not included in the session to which they were submitted will be considered for other sessions. Best, Jenny Jenny L. Call for Workshop Proposals: ACM Conference on Recommender Systems 2018
by Yong Zheng 04 Dec '17

04 Dec '17

*** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** -------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL for WORKSHOP PROPOSALS ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2018) to be held in Vancouver, Canada, 2nd-7th October, 2018 https://recsys.acm.org/recsys18/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- RecSys 2018 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The goal of the workshops is to provide additional venues for discussing novel ideas as well as recent results of research in progress. In 2018 our goal is to have a balanced workshop program which comprises workshop formats of different types and a combination of newly emerging, currently evolving, and historically understudied topics. Different full-day and half-day workshop formats are possible, for example: ● Workshops with novel interactive workshop formats and a relatively small number of participants. Such workshop formats might for example target at the exploration of a certain topic during the workshop through a moderated discussion or breakout sessions, resulting in a draft paper or report to be completed and published after the workshop. Particular priority will be given to these formats which require the active involvement of the participants. ● Workshops with the traditional workshop format on specialized topics; such workshops typically have their own paper submission and review processes. Proposals for continuations of existing workshop series are welcome, however, please include a brief statement on the necessity for the new edition, including a description of the outcomes of previous years and the expected novelty of this edition. In both cases, a subset of workshop papers selected by workshop chairs will also be allocated a presentation slot in a poster session to encourage discussion and follow up between authors and attendees. We encourage you to contact us by email to workshops2018(a)recsys.acm.org in advance with workshop ideas; we will work with prospective workshop organizers to help them design successful proposals. In particular for workshop proposals with novel interactive formats we are happy to assist you in further developing and implementing your ideas. Please contact us at least three weeks before the deadline. We encourage both researchers and industry practitioners to submit proposals. PROPOSAL FORMAT AND SUBMISSION The workshop proposal should be a PDF document no more than 4 pages long, submitted by e-mail to workshops2018(a)recsys.acm.org and organized as follows: ● Workshop title ● A short description of the workshop including the rationale for the workshop and how and why it fits the audience of RecSys. This description should include also the topic, format, and details about what type of submission is requested from prospective attendees. Please also add an explanation on how the workshop complements, rather than duplicates, the topics of the main conference. ● Name, email address, and affiliation for workshop organizer(s) and a brief description of their experience in organizing such events. ● Requested duration (half day or full day), and expected number of participants. ● Description of workshop activities. Outline how the workshop will be organized and how the time will be spent. In particular, please sketch how you will engage participants to foster more interactivity and engagement during the workshop. For more interactive workshop formats, also outline the process of selecting or inviting the participants. ● Description of plans for promoting the workshop and disseminating the results. ● History of prior workshops on this topic (e.g., including the number of submissions and attendees), if any. EVALUATION CRITERIA ● Ability of the topic to contribute to the continued development of the field of recommender systems. ● Level of complementarity of the topic to the main conference. ● Clear plan for attracting submissions, making the workshop itself productive, and disseminating results. ● Evidence that this plan will be successful. ● Experience of the organizers. IMPORTANT DATES ● Workshop proposal submission deadline: March 5th, 2018 ● Workshop proposal notification: March 26th, 2018 ● Workshop summary camera-ready deadline: August 6th, 2018 ● Workshop dates: October 6th and 7th, 2018 Example deadlines (workshop organizers are free to apply their own deadlines, although we encourage the organizers to follow the suggested deadlines): ● Call for Papers publication: April 9th, 2018 ● Paper submission deadline: July 16th, 2018 ● Reviewer deadline: August 3rd, 2018 ● Author notification: August 13th, 2018 ● Camera-ready version deadline: August 27th, 2018 Deadlines refer to 23:59 (11:59pm) in the AoE (Anywhere on Earth) time zone. WORKSHOP CHAIRS ● Alejandro Bellogín, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain ● Martha Larson, Radboud University, The Netherlands

Re: [Air-L] Advice: pitching STS work to AI scientists (MG)

Hi Maya, It doesn't look as though you have any replies to the list, so here are my thoughts, based on doing case studies in a different area, but using STS-style (social informatics) approach. There are undoubtaedly many people working in AI that take ethics very seriously -could you identify these practices and include them in your critical appraisal? You would be doing the AI community a service to map what's happening and the gaps in that map would fascinating from an STS perspective. Hope this helps -Ella Dr Ella Taylor-Smith School of Computing Edinburgh Napier University 10 Colinton Road Edinburgh, EH10 5DT Email: e.taylor-smith(a)napier.ac.uk http://www.iidi.napier.ac.uk/e.taylor-smith http://about.me/EllaTaylorSmith @EllaTasm Message: 1 Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2017 14:58:21 +0100 From: MG <mayamemes(a)riseup.net> To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] Advice: pitching STS work to AI scientists Message-ID: <4ec8b41e-2812-903c-7f2c-c62733245340(a)riseup.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Hi AOIR list, I'm writing to ask for advice on pitching doctoral work grounded in an STS approach to AI scientists at an ethics and society conference. (They expressly ask for early stage PhD and Masters students to apply). Does anyone have advice on how to shape work that is mostly critical of how AI science approaches questions of ethics to the AI science community itself? I imagine that anyone doing any kind of critical STS work and engaging with scientists working in that discipline might have insights and references. It would be nice to have my abstract accepted, but I'm also interested in engaging with this community. Data & Society Call for 2018-2019 Fellows
by danah boyd 04 Dec '17

04 Dec '17

Please forward as you see fit. Note that this year, we are intentionally accepting faculty fellows. <grin> Data & Society Call for 2018-2019 Fellows https://datasociety.net/initiatives/fellows-program/ <https://datasociety.net/initiatives/fellows-program/> We are now accepting applications for our 2018-19 fellows class. The deadline to apply is January 15, 2018. Please direct inquiries about the fellows program or application process to fellowsapp(a)datasociety.net <mailto:fellowsapp@datasociety.net> . Questions will not reflect negatively on your application. Don’t hesitate to get in touch! *Program* Data & Society is assembling its fifth class of fellows to join us from September 1, 2018. (Please meet our current and past fellows classes at https://datasociety.net/people/fellows/ <https://datasociety.net/people/fellows/> .) Data & Society works towards a future in which the values that shape technology are visible and intentionally chosen with respect for human dignity. We conduct interdisciplinary research and build a field of actors to ensure that knowledge guides development and governance of technology. Our annual fellows program helps ensure that new connections and perspectives deepen and expand our community’s understanding of the challenges and opportunities society faces in a data-centric world. Data & Society fellows have pursued academic research, written code, created art, brought together communities of activists and practice, run workshops, worked closely with Data & Society’s in-house research team and each other, and much more. Current and past fellows are academics and researchers, artists and activists, coders and technologists, journalists, lawyers, and community organizers concerned with the implications of data-centric technology’s role in reconfiguring society. We are engaged, individually and together, in interrogating and articulating those implications and developing frames that can help society address emergent tensions. The fellowship is intentionally broad and inclusive of a range of output and engagement. As we build the 2018-19 class, we’re continuing to embrace breadth and diversity, but we are providing some categories to help better guide applicants and to ensure fellows are supported within Data & Society’s programs and productively connected to others in the Data & Society community. *2018-19 Fellowships* For the coming year, we are seeking 8-10 fellows across four categories: 1) Arts and Culture: Artistic and cultural production can advance public understanding of the complexities of data-centric technologies and can drive individual and collective imagining of multiple futures. We are looking for arts and culture fellows who will connect to Data & Society research topics and whose work challenges commonplace narratives running through debate and public discourse around technology. 2) Organizational Bridging: Fellows from other organizations, companies, or public sector entities who are grappling directly with questions around data-centric technologies and automation bring a crucial, practical frame to Data & Society’s work. Bridge fellows will come with a mandate from their organization to explore a particular question or issue during their time at Data & Society and to bring that knowledge back to their home institution. With the fellow, we will actively seek to build a strong relationship over the course of the fellowship between Data & Society and the fellow’s home institution. We’re especially interested in applicants who play a legal or policy role in their home institution. 3) Computer and Data Science: Technical fellows at Data & Society bring a core research question to their time within the organization; they are also looking to explore the social, cultural and political implications of technological choices. Technical fellows may come from academia, industry, civil society, or the public sector. We expect technical fellows will have an advanced degree in computer or data science or equivalent, relevant experience. 4) Faculty Fellows: We are seeking faculty fellows whose Data & Society fellowship project will contribute to an existing, in-house research initiative. In this category, we invite applications from faculty of any rank who are at least three years beyond receipt of their Ph.D. by the start of the fellowship. Eligible fields include the social sciences (anthropology, sociology, political economy, science and technology studies, history, etc.); law, jurisprudence, or policy; business; or a social science or humanistic field as long as the applicant’s work engages the social and cultural implications of data-centric technologies and automation. *Participation & Cohort* While we are prioritizing four kinds of fellows for the 2018-19 year, the core intent of the program has not changed: This is not a fellowship for those who want to spend a year head-down on an independent project. Rather, this is a program for people who are looking for ways to create impact both within and beyond their field, who can see the value of their work within an interdisciplinary community – and on a bigger stage. Fellows commit to being in residence at the D&S loft in New York City for two days each week. Each fellow, over the course of their fellowship, will pursue a project or set of activities of their own design. Fellows are also asked to engage with D&S – both at the organizational level and with the broader community. This engagement can take a number of different forms, from organizing small group sessions with visitors, to developing workshops, to working on in-house publications, and much, much more. We ask that all fellows either participate in or lead a monthly reading group, as well as participate in a lightweight round of regular D&S activities designed to strengthen community and research connections. Beyond that, the choice of where and how to participate is part of the fellowship design process between the fellow and D&S staff. Together with our in-house research team and postdocs, fellows form the annual Data & Society cohort – a group of approximately 45 colleagues who come together as the core of Data & Society’s research and field-building efforts. Beyond the in-house cohort, Data & Society fellows are also connected to past fellows, our affiliates, and a broad field of actors both in New York City and beyond who regularly pass through D&S for workshops, seminars, social gatherings, and talks. *Projects & Themes* Potential fellows are invited to imagine a specific project or set of activities, in one of the four categories above, that they will execute to help society’s understanding of a world permeated by data. Successful fellowship projects inform, convene, intervene, or provoke – with an eye to broader impact. We are open to a wide range of potential outputs, from papers and op-eds to events, code, and art installations. We are also interested in creating connections and exchange between our in-house research and fellows’ projects. We also love it when our fellows experiment with new ideas or stretch our work and network in unexpected directions. We expect that the themes that run through our 2018-19 fellows class will be a combination of the familiar and the unexpected. Some of Data & Society’s ongoing, in-house research topics include: artificial intelligence; precision medicine and heath; media manipulation and disinformation; the future of labor; human rights, data, and refugee populations; and fairness, accountability, and transparency in technical systems. Again, we welcome applications that pose entirely new questions and topics and push D&S in new directions, as well as applications that complement and expand our current research themes. *Term* Residency typically runs from September 1 through June 30 of the following year. If you would like to apply for a fellowship but cannot commit to a full term, please flag that in your application, as we may be able to accommodate some variations. *Funding* Fellows commit to two days a week in residence for the full term and are offered a stipend of $25,000, with additional, approved project costs available to them. If we are able to accommodate a fellowship period shorter than ten months, the stipend will be pro-rated on a monthly basis. All fellows will have access to desks/workspaces, meeting rooms, email addresses, etc., and programmatic and organizational support to advance their work. As a 501(c)(3) organization, we support fellows in applying for both federal and philanthropic grants, and we work with fellows currently holding grants to craft an appropriate fellowship that allows them to honor commitments to grantors. While we welcome applications from outside the United States, we are currently unable to support the acquisition of visas. If you are applying from outside the United States and are accepted, you will need to secure your own visa and, depending on your situation, work permit. *Application Process* To apply for a Data & Society fellowship, we’ll ask you to complete an application at Submittable. You’ll be submitting information about yourself and your work to date, including: - cover letter; - resume or CV; - work samples; - project summary and brief (1000 word) proposal; - names and email addresses of three references. Note that references will automatically receive an email from Submittable, the application platform, prompting them to submit a letter of reference to Data & Society. Please make sure your references whitelist submittable.com. *First-round applications are due January 15, 2018.* Second-round applicants will be contacted for an interview with D&S staff, fellows, and/or advisors, and may be asked for additional information such as project budgets as they move through the review process. Successful applicants will be notified in the spring, with a public announcement to follow.
