Prevalence of Trolling Behavior
by Hayes, Rebecca M 01 Dec '17

01 Dec '17

Hello Everyone, I am searching for population-based research on the prevalence of trolling behaviors. I have some books (Phillips, 2015 and Coleman, 2014) on this topic, but can not find research that discusses commonality of the behavior. While I know it is difficult to study trolling, even defining it is up for debate, but I would like to read more research. Any suggestions? This has not really been studied within criminology, and therefore I am coming up empty-handed. Any advice is very much appreciated! Best, Becky

new materials for teaching/thinking about AI, Algorithms and Accountability
by Christian Sandvig 01 Dec '17

01 Dec '17

Dear AoIR colleagues, Following up on my September emails, a number of recordings and resources related to the conference are online. Two of them had wide participation from the Internet, so thank you to the Internet and the air-l mailing list for that. Some of the things available now: The Compressed Auditing Algorithms Film Festival - a ~45 minute program of short films and excerpts investigating depictions of algorithms in popular media and education (all videos online) The Computer Says No: The Bad News About Online Discrimination in Algorithmic Systems - a recording of a 90-minute interactive roundtable intended for a general audience How to Watch Them Watching You: Researching Social Media, Online Platforms, and Algorithmic Systems From the Outside - a recording of a 90-minute interactive roundtable intended for Internet researchers Just Google Me* - an alternative business card that you can hand out instead of your own, if you want to Algorithms Dérive - an app-based self-guided, collaboratively-produced tour intended to promote reflection about algorithms The Top 10 Kinds of Fairness - A 20-minute talk promoting a new research directions for the FAT (Fairness, Accountability, Transparency) technical community. It argues for an expansive definition of fairness that goes beyond “statistical” fairness or “comparative” fairness, and for automated monitoring for fairness as a research problem. All are at... http://auditingalgorithms.science/ ...with more things on the way. I hope this is helpful, Christian ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Christian Sandvig <csandvig(a)umich.edu> Date: Thu, Sep 28, 2017 at 10:41 AM Subject: Reminder: Starts TODAY: Live-streams of THE COMPUTER SAYS NO + HOW TO WATCH THEM WATCHING YOU (4pm EDT) To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Dear AoIR colleagues, A reminder that the first event (of two) starts today at 4 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (UTC/GMT -4 hours). Hope to "see" you "there" via the question tool or on twitter! Feel free to forward. Best, Christian ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Christian Sandvig <csandvig(a)umich.edu> Date: Thu, Sep 21, 2017 at 6:38 PM Subject: Mark Your Calendar: Live-streams of THE COMPUTER SAYS NO + HOW TO WATCH THEM WATCHING YOU (9/28-9/29) To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Hello AoIR colleagues, We'll be hosting a workshop with some familiar AoIR people next week. I'm writing to this list because we will be live-streaming two of our public events on YouTube and I am wondering if you would like to "attend." We will be taking questions from the Internet via Twitter and the BKC question tool. Even if you are not in the right timezone, I hope this will be of interest. I dare Europe to stay awake for the first one, and Australians to stay awake for the second one. Live-Streamed Events: THE COMPUTER SAYS NO: The Bad News About Online Discrimination in Algorithmic Systems Thursday, September 28, 2017 4:00-5:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (UTC/GMT -4 hours) http://auditingalgorithms.science/?p=53 HOW TO WATCH THEM WATCHING YOU: Researching Social Media, Online Platforms, and Algorithmic Systems From the Outside Friday, September 29, 2017 10-11:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (UTC/GMT -4 hours) http://auditingalgorithms.science/?p=64 The overall occasion is a workshop entitled "Auditing Algorithms: Adding Accountability to Automated Authority," explained here: http://auditingalgorithms.science/ Its goal is a white paper about this area of research, which I expect to emailing this list about again in the future. We are also working on some weirder participatory online activities -- if you like these topics you'll want to jump on in on them. More on that after these events. For more context, here is a related quote: "The equations of big-data algorithms have permeated almost every aspect of our lives. A massive industry has grown up to comb and combine huge data sets — documenting, for example, Internet habits — to generate profiles of individuals. These often target advertising, but also inform decisions on credit, insurance and more. They help to control the news or adverts we see, and whether we get hired or fired. They can determine whether surveillance and law-enforcement agencies flag us as likely activists or dissidents — or potential security or criminal threats….Largely absent from the widespread use of such algorithms are the rules and safeguards that govern almost every other aspect of life in a democracy. There is an asymmetry in algorithmic power and accountability…Fortunately, a strong movement for greater algorithmic accountability is now under way. Researchers hope to find ways to audit for bias….Society needs to discuss in earnest how to rid software and machines of human bugs." –Unsigned Editorial, Nature (2016) Hope you'll be "there", Christian (on behalf of the co-organizers) -- http://www-personal.umich.edu/~csandvig/

Advice: pitching STS work to AI scientists
by MG 01 Dec '17

01 Dec '17

Hi AOIR list, I'm writing to ask for advice on pitching doctoral work grounded in an STS approach to AI scientists at an ethics and society conference. (They expressly ask for early stage PhD and Masters students to apply). Does anyone have advice on how to shape work that is mostly critical of how AI science approaches questions of ethics to the AI science community itself? I imagine that anyone doing any kind of critical STS work and engaging with scientists working in that discipline might have insights and references. It would be nice to have my abstract accepted, but I'm also interested in engaging with this community. Re: [Air-L] Non-software uses of GitHub

Hey Jim, Open Source Publishing, a group that came out of Constant, a Brussels based arts collective, have been researching and using versioning systems in graphic design/typography. http://strabic.fr/OSP-Visual-Culture In case you don’t speak French, this video is in English: https://vimeo.com/107907361 OSP has specifically focused on what it means to use versioning systems for collaborative work on images rather than on text/code. They use git, and not github, due to problems with licensing in the latter. Also see: Libra Graphics Research Unit where much of this experimentation started. http://www.constantvzw.org/site/-Libre-Graphics-Research-Unit-.html Looking forward to see what you compile. s.

Open Access: "Communicative Figurations: Transforming Communications in Times of Deep Mediatization"
by Leif Kramp 30 Nov '17

30 Nov '17

New book series „Transforming Communications“ (Palgrave Macmillan) starts with edited volume (OPEN ACCESS): "Communicative Figurations: Transforming Communications in Times of Deep Mediatization“ edited by Andreas Hepp, Andreas Breiter and Uwe Hasebrink This open access volume assesses the influence of our changing media environment. Today, there is not one single medium that is the driving force of change. With the spread of various technical communication media such as mobile phones and internet platforms, we are confronted with a media manifold of deep mediatization. But how can we investigate its transformative capability? This book answers this question by taking a non-media-centric perspective, researching the various figurations of collectivities and organizations humans are involved in. The first part of the book outlines a fundamental understanding of the changing media environment of deep mediatization and its transformative capacity. The second part focuses on collectivities and movements: communities in the city, critical social movements, maker, online gaming groups and networked groups of young people. The third part moves institutions and organizations into the foreground, discussing the transformation of journalism, religion, politics, and education, whilst the fourth and final part is dedicated to methodologies and perspectives. Syracuse University School of Information Studies Doctoral Program
by Jennifer Stromer-Galley 30 Nov '17

30 Nov '17

Syracuse University's School of Information Studies welcomes applicants for our Ph.D. program. The interdisciplinary nature of our program is visible through the backgrounds of the 30 current doctoral students. These students hail from ten countries and have academic training in the social sciences, communications, business, computer science, librarianship, linguistics, information science, and others areas. Our doctoral program is a welcoming and inclusive place for scholars from under-represented populations, something we see as a defining element of our program. Doctoral students pursue individualized course plans that are tuned to their particular research interests and needs. This means advising and, more importantly, close working relationships with faculty members is a cornerstone of the Syracuse University iSchool Ph.D. program. This is why it is both residential and full-time. We celebrate the success of our recent graduates who are taking up tenure-track positions in premier research institutions and exceptional liberal arts colleges, excelling in academic and policy think tanks, and pursuing entrepreneurial success! Current students are earning awards for their publications and dissertation work, continuing a long tradition of such recognition. For 2018, we are particularly interested in speaking with applicants and seeing applications from those whose interests align with one or more of the following research areas + Social computing, social media, social networks, and crowdsourcing + Organizational impacts of ICTs (e.g., Citizen Science, FLOSS, mobile work, distributed scientific collaboration, and infrastructure studies) + Information policy, Internet governance, and telecommunications policy (e.g., Wireless telecommunications policy and telecommunication service markets) + Librarianship + Text and data mining, Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval + Computational social science, visualization, and data analytics + Data infrastructure and services in support of research + Information security and privacy Applications are due before 3 January, 2018. Please note that admitted students are assured of at least four year's funding (including summers) along with tuition and other support. You can learn more about the Syracuse iSchool faculty and interests at https://ischool.syr.edu/research/faculty-research-areas/. Looking for PhD students
by Herold, David [APSS] 30 Nov '17

30 Nov '17

[Chinese version below] Looking for PhD Students: Observing and Video-recording of the Use of Mobile Phone in Everyday Life Technological developments (for example, Internet access, social media, GPS) have contributed to the emergence of new practices and new forms of sociality: new ways of interacting with people (shaking your phone on WeChat), new forms of dating (location-aware dating platforms such as MoMo, ZuiYou), new ways of user-to-user services (finding a ride through Uber or DiDi), or new ways of paying for goods (electronic money such as WeChat Pay or Alipay). Our group is investigating these topics by observing, or even video-recording, people using technology in everyday life. We draw on ethnomethodology and conversation analysis to make visible our taken-for-granted ways of interacting with these technologies. We are looking for students with a background in sociology, anthropology, or communication, who would be interested in studying some of these topics by doing a PhD at the Department of Sociology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The deadline is 30 January 2018 (for admission 2018/2019) C and 1 December 2018 (for admission 2019/2020). CfP. 4S Sydney Open Panel. Messing with Methods in More-than-Human Worlds. August 29 - September 1 2018
by Jaz Choi 30 Nov '17

30 Nov '17

We invite you to submit abstracts for Messing with Methods in More-than-Human Worlds, an Open Panel at 4S Sydney, August 29 - September 1 2018 (https://4s2018sydney.org/) 74. Messing with Methods in More-than-Human Worlds Organisers: Jaz Hee-jeong Choi, QUT; Anne Galloway, Victoria University of Wellington (NZ), Larissa Hjorth, RMIT (AU) A multitude of political, technoscientific and ecological disruptions are challenging the ‘myth’ of human exceptionalism, forcing researchers to find new ways of understanding—and intervening in—a range of human/nonhuman encounters. From reconfigured definitions of ‘agency’ and the ‘social’ to renewed explorations of ‘co-presence’ and ‘mutual becoming,’ more-than-human approaches (see for e.g.: Kirksey & Helmreich, 2010; Buller, 2015; Despret, 2016; Bastian et al., 2017) can exemplify Haraway’s (2016) invitation to ‘stay with the trouble’ of human/nonhuman entanglements. But actually doing this research is hard. There is still a tendency, as Abram (2011) puts it, to speak “about such entities only behind their backs” instead of actively calling out and listening to them. And when we do succeed with that task, we still face the challenge of how to (re)tell these stories, or even trickier, how to ‘take action.’ This panel is a hopeful call for a collective, transdisciplinary effort to consider these methodological possibilities and limitations, and to share even our messiest experiments in creating and communicating knowledge necessary for thriving in more-than-human worlds. We welcome papers that think through these, and other, questions: What does it mean to do more-than-human participatory research? How does taking the more-than-human seriously reconfigure both notions and practicalities of ‘open,’ ethical research? What kinds of more-than-human (cosmo)politics are made public through different methods of ‘engagement’ and ‘impact’? What is the role of design and/or creative practice as both process and product in more-than-human research? How can indigenous ways of knowing revitalise human/nonhuman encounters, and serve to decolonise both ethnographic and creative practice? REFERENCES: Kirksey, S. & Helmreich, S. How to Submit: Abstracts close: Feb 1st, 2018 Open panel paper submissions should be in the form of abstracts of up to 250 words. They should include the paper’s main arguments, methods, and contributions to STS.
