ACM IUI 2018 Call for Posters and Demos
by Yong Zheng 28 Nov '17

28 Nov '17

*** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers: ACM IUI 2018 to be held in Tokyo, Japan, 7th-11th March 2018 http://iui.acm.org/2018/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ACM IUI 2018 is the 23rd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. In 2018, IUI will be held in the Hitotsubashi Hall in central Tokyo Japan from March 7th - 11th and will co-locate with the Japanese IPSJ Interactions conference. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. Along with 25 other topics in AI & HCI, this year we especially encourage submissions on explainable intelligent user interfaces for IUI 2018. ** Why you should submit to ACM IUI ** At ACM IUI, we focus on the interaction between machine intelligence and human intelligence. While other conferences focus on one side or the other, we address the complex interaction between the two. We welcome research that explores how to make the interaction between computers and people smarter, which may leverage solutions from data mining, knowledge representation, novel interaction paradigms, and emerging technologies. We strongly encourage submissions that discuss research from both HCI and AI simultaneously, but also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. It is large enough to be diverse and lively, but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels and doctoral consortium for graduate students. - IUI topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Affective and aesthetic interfaces - Big Data and analytics - Collaborative interfaces - Education and learning-related technologies - Evaluations of intelligent user interfaces - Explainable intelligent user interfaces. - Health and intelligent health technologies - Information retrieval and search - Intelligent assistants for complex tasks - Intelligent wearable and mobile interfaces - Intelligent ubiquitous user interfaces - Intelligent visualization tools - Interactive machine learning - Knowledge-based approaches to user interface design and generation - Modeling and prediction of user behavior - Multi-modal interfaces (speech, gestures, eye gaze, face, physiological information etc.) - Natural language and speech processing - Persuasive and assistive technologies in IUI - Planning and plan recognition for IUI - Proactive and agent-based user interaction - Recommender systems - Smart environments and tangible computing - Social media analysis - User Modelling for Intelligent Interfaces - User-Adaptive interaction and personalization ** Dates ** Submission Due: Dec. 22nd (FRI), 2017 Notification to Authors: Jan. 14th (SUN), 2018 Camera Ready Due: Jan. 21st (SUN) ** Submission - Poster and Demo ** *Demos* The demonstrations track complements the overall program of the conference. Demonstrations show implementations of novel, interesting, and important intelligent user interface concepts or systems. We invite submissions relevant to intelligent user interfaces and which address, but are not limited to, the topics of the conference. As mentioned previously, we have 3 events this holiday weekend. This is the third. ICANN, in its wisdom, has decided to dispense with remote hubs (awkward, unreliable) for its meetings in favor of these regional 'Read Outs' (friendly, rewarding). Experts and newbies alike have the opportunity to dig into details of the latest ICANN policy issues, even if packing 6 days of numbers and names wonkery into 90 mins is a bit of a challenge. This time round we have joined with SIPA in order to bring some students to the table. SIPA will also be providing the refreshments, which are sure to be awesome. Our full line up for the weekend: Sat Nov 25 10am NYU: Internet History for CS Teachers Workshop (still time to RSVP, no livestream) - http://isoc-ny.org/p2/9632 Mon Nov 27 9am Civic Hall: Internet in Venezuela: past, present and future - http://isoc-ny.org/p2/9639 Mon Nov 27 5pm SIPA - http://isoc-ny.org/p2/9645 [image: livestream] <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/icann60nyc>On *Monday November 27 2017* at *5pm*, the* Internet Society New York Chapter <https://isoc-ny.org/>* (ISOC-NY) and the Columbia University *Tech and Policy Series <https://sipa.columbia.edu/ideas-lab/techpolicy>* will present the *ICANN 60 NYC Readout <https://events.columbia.edu/go/ICANN>* at the *School of International and Public Affairs <https://sipa.columbia.edu/>* in NYC. Mainstreaming Gender and Sexuality - Panel Discussion
by Light Ben 27 Nov '17

27 Nov '17

Short notice, but all in the vicinity of Salford on the 14th December are welcome to join the panel discussion detailed below. A mini-repeat of bits of the roundtable at AoIR in Tartu, with a bit of a twist. Best wishes, Ben. Ben Light - BA (Hons), MSc, PhD. Professor of Digital Society Development Lead – Health, Wellbeing and Society Industry Collaboration Zone School of Health and Society Connected Lives, Diverse Realities Research Group University of Salford, Salford M5 4WT tel: +44(0)1612950159 | twitter: @doggyb web: www.benlight.me<http://www.benlight.me/> open access papers: http://usir.salford.ac.uk/view/authors/59563.html Recent Publications Include: Albury, K., Burgess, J., Light, B., Race, K., and Wilken, R. Panel Discussion 14th December 2017 1pm to 3pm Allerton Building L219 Hosted by the Centre for Applied Research in Health, Welfare and Policy Connected Lives, Diverse Realities Research Group This panel discussion interrogates why it is that much scholarly work on gender and sexuality remains at the margins of research into culture and society. For example, in a blog for the British Sociological Association earlier this year, Ken Plummer noted that LGBT issues and queer theory are still noticeably side-lined. Innovative feminist research methods, particularly those within the participatory action tradition, continue to struggle for the recognition commanded by traditional ‘malestreamed’ methods. As bell hooks contends, feminists of colour continue to experience racism and silencing. And, rather than being an integral and integrated part of undergraduate teaching and learning, gender and sexuality studies appear to be often a topic added on to other modules in many universities throughout the Western world: a token gesture. To facilitate the discussion, we have organised a panel of speakers around the hashtag #NSFW. #NSFW is used in digital contexts to flag content assumed to be inappropriate for consumption, or indeed production, in many workplaces (and indeed even given the existence of the hashtag #NSFL - not safe for life), our daily lives more generally. Usage of the hashtag is often highly gendered and sexualized, while at the same time, being intimately tied with the quest for diversion, amusement, and titillation #NSFW is that which both appeals and averts. #NSFW is an excellent example for a demonstration of the centrality of gender and sexuality in society in many different ways. This panel represents a beginning of a discussion of how we can move gender and sexuality studies from the margins of research into culture and society, and to the centre. It is a call to action. Join us to discuss how we can redefine what is considered mainstream. Panelists: Ben Light is Professor of Digital Society at the University of Salford, UK. His research is concerned with understanding people’s everyday experiences of digital media. He is author of Disconnecting with Social Networking Sites (Palgrave MacMillan 2014) and is currently working in the areas of digitally mediated public sexual cultures, dating and hookup apps, and is completing a book about #NSFW for MIT Press with Dr Kylie Jarrett (Maynooth) and Professor Susanna Paasonen (Turku). He has published in journals such as: New Media and Society, Cultural Sociology, Information Communication and Society, First Monday and Convergence. Susanna Paasonen is chair of the department of Media Studies and the deputy director of the School of History, Culture and Arts Studies. Her research interests focus on media culture: more specifically, on internet research, popular culture, sexuality, pornography and theories of affect. Her current interests are affect and media technology, the diverse meanings of the hashtag #NSFW and the documentary films of Jan Soldat. She is author of Carnal Resonance: Affect and Online Pornography (MIT Press 2011). Her research has appeared in journals such as Feminist Theory, European Journal of Cultural Studies, International Journal of Cultural Studies, , Sex Education, Somatechnics, Television & New Media, and Critical Studies in Media Communication. Jenny Sundén is Professor of Gender Studies at Södertörn University, Sweden. Her research interests are primarily in new media studies, game studies, cultural studies, science and technology studies (STS), feminist theory, queer theory, affect theory, and ethnography. She is the author of Material Virtualities: Approaching Online Textual Embodiment (Peter Lang, 2003) and Gender and Sexuality in Online Game Cultures: Passionate Play (Routledge 2012, with Malin Sveningsson). Her articles appear in Ada: A Journal of Gender, New Media & Technology; European Journal of Cultural Studies; Feminist Media Studies; Games and Culture; and Somatechnics.

Digital Rights in Australia report
by Fiona Martin 27 Nov '17

27 Nov '17

Colleagues may be interested in a report released today: Digital Rights in Australia: https://ses.library.usyd.edu.au/handle/2123/17587. At a time when social media technologies are increasingly redefining aspects of our professional and personal lives, Digital Rights In Australia investigates the ethical and legal challenges Australians face in using digital, networked technologies and the debates they are having about how to best manage their transformative impacts. Drawing on a national survey of 1600 Australians, focus group discussion and policy, law and regulatory analysis, the Digital Rights in Australia report covers rights issues in four areas: privacy, profiling and analytics; government data matching and surveillance; workplace change; and freedom of expression and speech regulation. Crucially it also looks at the major role of private, transnational digital platforms in reshaping the way people work, study and conduct business, their interactions with government and with each other. The research was conducted by Gerard Goggin, Ariadne Vromen, Kimberlee Weatherall, Fiona Martin, Adele Webb, Lucy Sunman and Francesco Bailo at the University of Sydney, and is a major outcome of the University’s Sydney Research Excellence Initiative (SREI). Re: [Air-L] Reading & annotating papers on Android Tablet and integrating with Zotero
by Axel Bruns 26 Nov '17

26 Nov '17

G'day Niels ! Count me as another happy user of Zotero + ZotFile; I did most of the reading for my upcoming book that way. I use GoodReader on the iPad as a PDF reader, and sync files between laptop and iPad via Dropbox. One small issue: with PDFs from some journals, ZotFile/Zotero sometimes get the page numbers for extracted text annotations wrong. This is the case with journals that append a cover page to a downloaded article PDF (e.g. Journalism Studies, and a number of other journals using the same CMS backend), which shifts the page numbers for extracted text by one. Not a massive problem as long as you're aware of it and apply manual corrections to the extracted notes that ZotFile generates. > Message: 4 > Date: Sun, 26 Nov 2017 13:08:36 +0100 > From: Niels ten Oever <lists(a)digitaldissidents.org> > To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > Subject: [Air-L] Reading & annotating papers on Android Tablet and > integrating with Zotero > Message-ID: > <c3397cb6-f43d-29de-99c8-b342e0967596(a)digitaldissidents.org> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 > > Hi all, > > Am very curious to hear your best practices for annotating papers on > tablets and keeping them in sync with your favorite Citation and > Bibliography tool and library. > > I am a happy Zotero + LibreOffice / Sublime + LaTeXing - user who > just obtained an Android tablet and who has the intention to stop > printing papers in 2018. > > All your recommendations on how to sync annotated papers between > tablets and laptops are very welcome.
