We welcome submissions of artworks and live performances from a wide range of practitioners and researchers in areas such as arts, design and technology including submissions from students and independent practitioners. In our daily lives, the digital has become the mundane, inseparable from our everyday routines and bringing us the ability to be interconnected on a global scale. The digital is integrated in every step of our lives, however, it’s often valued for its utilitarian use rather than looking at it as a creative or provocative medium. One way of approaching the post-digital is to bring analogue to meet the digital. In the post-digital era, we see a turn to vintage materials and craftsmanship, natural materials have come to the fore, and along with the practices of making them are once more being cherished. Designing for the post-digital does not mean blindly embracing nostalgia or turning away from technology – it means demystifying the digital through the design process and encouraging designs that equalise the status of digital and analogue, both in the materials and the practices. We invite interactive artworks, live performances, video prototypes/mockumentaries or any other type of artworks that use the post-digital to enrich emotional, bodily and cultural experiences through aesthetic explorations. Rather than focusing on representations of data and information, we welcome projects aiming for more provocative and critical reflection on the role of technology in our life. We seek submissions that articulate viewpoints and facilitate dialogue around the TEI conference themes as well as topics including but not limited to: • Humanization or dehumanization of technology in our contemporary world • Manifestations of electronic media – analogue as well as digital – in the physical world, and it’s possible political implications • Critical or discursive designs that engage with how human physical interactions may get represented in digital realms • Artworks engage with the “post-truth” era • Live Wizard-of-Oz performances that present believable or unbelievable interactions • Body as experience, instrument and interface • Artistic explorations of shape-, weight-, colour- and size changing artefacts • Novel interactions realised through traditional crafts or unconventional materials, professional artistry, craft or musicianship • Ephemeral interfaces • Haptic and multi-modal experiences • Mixed reality (virtual or augmented) from a tangible and embodied interaction perspective • Aesthetic experience through tangible or full body interactions ————————————————— Submissions: Submissions should be in the form of a short (4-6 page Extended Abstract Template) paper in PDF format that will appear in the TEI Proceedings and will be indexed in the Extended Abstracts portion of the ACM Digital Library. They may also include a short (5 minute maximum) video documenting the artwork. Submissions should include the author(s) name and affiliation – in other words, they are not blind. In addition, applicants MUST submit an additional installation information form along with their Extended Abstract describing the technical and logistical requirements of exhibiting/performing their work. All papers must be submitted electronically (.pdf) via the TEI Precision Conference site (https://new.precisionconference.com/submissions <https://new.precisionconference.com/submissions>). ————————————————— Selection process: Submissions will be selected based on their artistic merits and their engagement with issues relevant to the field of tangible and embedded interactive art. In addition, the logistical constraints of the venue may determine the eligibility of submitted projects. Confidentiality of submissions will be maintained during the review process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity. Review Criteria: • Relevant – The work must have a tangible aspect, in the form of an installation, performance, object or physical event. • Artistic – It must operate significantly and compellingly through its formal, conceptual, and experiential properties. • Embodied – The work must engage the human body beyond the traditional screen-pointer interface. • Computational – It must involve computational technology (digital or analog) in some aspect of its form or function. • Positioning – The work must be positioned within related areas of theory and/or practice. Accepted work will be exhibited in a venue that is open to conference delegates. Artists (or their delegates) will need to be available for installation and bump-out, and for facilitating interaction with their artwork at scheduled times. One author of each accepted submission must register for the conference before the early registration deadline in order for the final paper version to appear in the conference proceedings. The new Chair will lead the expansion of the department, recently created by combining the Information Systems Department and the Information Technology Program. The Chair will work closely with the Dean of the College in transforming the college into a prominent player in the NY/NJ tech community, which is a strong priority for NJIT. DEPARTMENT: Informatics has a strong research and academic emphasis on data intensive computing, human centered computing, game design, augmented reality/virtual reality, security, and network administration. The department is well-ranked nationally for information systems and game design. We offer ABET accredited baccalaureate programs in Web and Information Systems, Business and Information Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, and Information Technology. We also offer MS programs in Business and Information Systems, IT Administration and Security, and a PhD in Information Systems. The department enrolls over 760 undergraduate and 380 graduate students. The college enrolls over 2,700 students and is the largest generator of computing talent in the tri-state area. The college and department have strong connections with local industry and work closely with many corporations through student Capstone projects, internships, and joint R&D projects. QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must have earned a doctorate in a relevant discipline, and should be an experienced and visionary academic leader with a distinguished research record. The candidate should qualify for a tenured position in the department at the rank of Full Professor. The Chair reports to the Dean of the Ying Wu College of Computing. I am soon to teach ma research stream on 'Internet Governance & Human Rights' for final year JD students at Melbourne Law School. Since I was free to design the course and materials, I thought it would be nice to include some visuals - short videos, interviews, exciting prezis - anything else that would be stimulating and of importance to such course. From Big Data in Politics to the Politics of Big Data* A special issue for PArtecipazione e COnflitto (PACO) Guest Editors: Alice Mattoni and Elena Pavan *Call for Full Articles* This special issue aims to open a much-needed space for developing a critical and informed reflection on the multi-faceted nexus between Big Data and the study of political participation dynamics. It understands Big Data not solely in terms of large-scale datasets of textual or digital data that require us to tune our research practices. More radically, it starts from a conceptualization of Big Data as a complex set of cultural, political and scientific knowledge practices that challenge the traditional modes in which research questions are posed and framed, analyses are performed, as well as the ways in which results are communicated to the public and thus affect public discourse and debates. It also invites us to orient our attention towards emergent forms of activism reclaiming citizens’ agency towards the production, management and exploitation of (big) data, including - such as data activism, statactivism, data justice struggles, open data movements. Consistently, the special issue aims to provide a solid contribution towards the investigation of two interrelated aspects. On the one hand, it will engage with how Big Data are leveraging our understanding of participation and contentious dynamics within complex societies providing new methodological and informational resources to investigate structures, contents and mechanisms of citizens’ public engagement. On the other, it will contribute to develop a specific take on how Big Data become a contested research and political terrain characterized by strong power dynamics between private and public actors, and entwining with governance processes at all levels - from the national to the transnational one. Many of us likely associate this phrase with Steve Jobs’ introduction of the iPhone in 2007. But there are clearly other candidates for the ”This,” e.g., the oncoming bioinformatics redesign of species or the fourth industrial revolution of artificially intelligent robots. But ”This” is also, without question, the greatest challenge of our age: climate change. Accordingly, the 13th Human Choice and Computers conference centers on the question: ICT and Climate Change - What Can We Do? The Conference invites both academics and practitioners in the field of ICTs and Society to take stock of their engagements, review their focus, and assess what and how each and every one of us might be able to contribute to the transformations needed (and already beginning) in local, regional, national and international contexts, towards becoming the diverse, environmentally and socially conscious, and thriving communities. We welcome submissions that speak directly and less directly to the conference theme. “This Changes Everything” implicates both climate change and the interrelated global challenges most central to the Working Groups of TC9 and its National Society representatives, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals. *** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers: ACM IUI 2018 to be held in Tokyo, Japan, 7th-11th March 2018 http://iui.acm.org/2018/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ACM IUI 2018 *Student Consortium* Call for Papers Important Dates: * Submission Deadline: November 6th, 2017 (AoE 23:59) * Notification: November 27th, 2017 * Camera-ready Deadline: December 24th, 2017 * Doctoral Consortium Day: March 8th, 9th or 10th, 2018 (Days TBD) Overview The IUI 2018 Student Consortium provides an opportunity for Doctoral and advanced Masters students to present and receive feedback about their research in an interdisciplinary workshop, under the guidance of a panel of mentors selected from senior people in the field. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their research to use this unique opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. The consortium will be organized with 8 to 12 presentations by the students, whose applications have been selected by the Student Consortium chairs and potentially other reviewers. The strongest candidates will be those who have a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along in their research that they can no longer make changes. The final version of accepted SC submissions will be included in the main conference proceedings published in the ACM DL. Complimentary/reduced conference registration will be available for students. Student Consortium participants will also be given high priority when applying for the student travel awards. Moreover, we are working to provide partial reimbursement of travel/accommodation expenses specifically for the participants of the Student Consortium. More information will come soon. Objectives The objectives of the student consortium are to: 1. Serve as a supportive setting to provide/receive feedback on students' current doctoral and masters' research and guidance on future research directions 2. Offer each student comments and fresh perspectives on their work from researchers and students outside of their own institution 3. Promote the development of a supportive community of scholars and a spirit of collaborative research 4. Contribute to the conference goals through interaction with other researchers and conference events Submission Instructions To apply for the Student Consortium, please submit to the URL below a single PDF containing the following (in order): 1. A brief cover letter containing your full name, contact details, affiliation, web page, expected graduation date and target degree, the name of your thesis advisor, gender (optional), home country (optional), and whether you are a member of an underrepresented minority group (optional) - one page maximum. 2. Your SC submission: a document describing your thesis/dissertation research plan and your progress thus far. This document should be in standard ACM format (http://www.sigchi.org/publications/chipubform/sigchi-paper-format-2016/view) and should be no more than two pages long, including references. Key points the submission should include: Motivation for your dissertation research, goal and research questions, related work that frames your research, methods/approach to reach the goal, results if any, and next steps for your research. 3. Your CV (maximum two pages). Submit your single, combined PDF to https://precisionconference.com/~sigchi by November 6th, 2017. In addition, a letter of recommendation from your thesis or doctoral advisor should be sent separately by email to the Student Consortium co-Chairs at studentconsortium2018(a)iui.acm.org.
