We don't just want you to attend our event on human rights in the digital age. We¹re inviting you to set the agenda at RightsCon Toronto <https://www.rightscon.org/> (May 16-18, 2018) by designing and building a session through our Call for Proposals <https://www.rightscon.org/submission/> , open until November 24, 2017. CfP: Online Information Review special issue on "Social Media Mining for Journalism"
by Bahareh Heravi 16 Nov '17

16 Nov '17

--------------------------- Call for Papers ----------------------------------------- Online Information Review (OIR) Special Issue on "Social Media Mining for Journalism" Journal: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/loi/oir Special issue: http://bit.ly/oir-smj [[ Impact Factor: 1.534 ]] **Submission Deadline: February 28, 2018** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ AIMS AND SCOPE -------------------------- The exponential growth of social media as a central communication practice, and its agility in capturing and announcing breaking news events more rapidly than traditional media, has changed the journalistic landscape: social media has been adopted as a significant source by professional journalists, and conversely, citizens are able to use social media as a form of direct reportage. This brings along new opportunities for newsrooms and journalists by providing new means for newsgathering through access to a wealth of citizen reportage and updates about current affairs, as well as an additional showcase for news dissemination. As well as being a big opportunity and having changed the day-to-day practices in the newsrooms, social media has introduced a number of challenges when it comes to news gathering, verification, production, reporting and dissemination. These include real time monitoring of streams, event detection, noise filtering, contextualisation, source and content verification, fact checking, annotation and archiving . The development of more advanced algorithms and tools for journalists requires not only furthering research in computational techniques, but also engaging more closely with journalists to understand how they work, what problems they’re facing when using social media, and how their day-to-day workflows can be improved. In this special issue we are looking for contributions that address a variety of research questions from both theoretical and practical perspectives. For example, how can we best utilise social media for news production? What technologies can we use for breaking news detection, filtering, aggregation and contextualisation? How can we assess the veracity of social media content and sources? What moral, legal, and ethical issues arise when professional journalists use social media as a source? How can we organise, interpret, and retain a record of social media around news events? What does this record contribute to our larger understanding of news, and the writing of news? TOPICS OF INTEREST -------------------------------- Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Newsgathering from social media ** Citizen journalism ** Detection of eyewitnesses and topic experts ** Event detection in social media ** Social media content curation ** Fact-checking and verification of sources and content ** Credibility assessment ** Social media and fake news * Social media news analytics ** Social media analytics for news ** Analysis of news diffusion in social media ** Visualisation of news and social media ** Social media to measure public opinion on news ** Analysis of the effect of fake news on public opinion * Data and Computational journalism ** Robot journalism with social media as a source ** Algorithmic accountability and transparency ** Data driven storytelling ** Data driven investigative journalism * Ethics and digital citizenship ** Ethical issues concerning social media newsgathering and eyewitness media ** Social media news audiences and network gatekeeping ** Social media and censorship GUEST EDITORS ------------------------- * Arkaitz Zubiaga, University of Warwick, UK * Bahareh R. Reminder: CFP: Information Ethics Roundtable 2018
by Sille Obelitz Søe 16 Nov '17

16 Nov '17

Dear colleagues, Allow me to kindly remind you of the upcoming deadline for submissions for the 16th annual Information Ethics Roundtable (IER 2018) – the first edition of the conference in Europe! Please see details below. Best wishes, Sille ------------------------------------------------ Information Ethics Roundtable 2018 Surveillance, Algorithms, and Digital Culture University of Copenhagen, Denmark May 17-18, 2018 Proposals Due: February 5, 2018 Notification of Acceptance: March 5, 2018 Full papers due: April 23, 2018 http://www.ier2018.info/ The 16th annual Information Ethics Roundtable (IER) will explore the interconnections and interdependencies between Surveillance, Algorithms, and Digital Culture that exist in the contemporary information society. Our daily lives and activities take place in digital media; information provision is highly personalized; decision-making is guided (automated) by the use of algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence; personal information is traded on the information market by platforms and data brokers; and surveillance, in many forms, is increasingly pervading both the public-facing and more intimate aspects of our daily lives. In the 2018 edition of IER, we seek proposals that approach these interconnections and interdependencies through the lens of information ethics (writ large, to include those working in multiple fields and with differing methods). The Information Ethics Roundtable (held annually since 2003) is a yearly conference that brings together researchers from disciplines such as philosophy, information science, communications, public administration, anthropology, and law to discuss ethical issues such as information privacy, intellectual property, intellectual freedom, and censorship. Proposals for IER 2018 should be situated within the general field of information ethics (although participants are expected to come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds) and, ideally, should connect two or more of the following areas of inquiry: - Surveillance, privacy, and/or data protection
 - Algorithms, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence (AI) - Digital culture, digital media, social media, and/or other forms of digital media (non-)use
*Proposal requirements* We invite two types of proposals: (1) Papers: please submit a 500-word abstract of your paper. If accepted, you are expected to submit a full paper prior to the Roundtable, and you will be presenting the paper at the conference. The paper will not be stored in a public repository or published in proceedings. (2) Panels: please submit a 1500-word description of your panel. The description should include: i) description of the topic, ii) biographies of the panel members, ii) organization of the panel. It is a requirement that panels focus tightly on a specific emergent topic, technology, phenomena, policy, or the like, with clear connections between the presentations. Proposals should be sent to: sille.obelitz(a)hum.ku.dk<mailto:sille.obelitz@hum.ku.dk> Please include the subject line: “IER 2018 proposal” We are also interested in receiving expressions of interest to serve as a commenter/discussant for another person’s paper, as each author with an accepted paper will be paired with a commenter who will provide formal feedback and comments during the conference (after the initial paper presentation; discussants will be included in the official conference program). Expressions of interest should be sent to: sille.obelitz(a)hum.ku.dk<mailto:sille.obelitz@hum.ku.dk> by April 16, 2018, although decisions will be made on a rolling basis after March 5, 2018 (the paper notification deadline). Please include the subject line: “IER 2018 commenter.” *Deadlines* Submission of Proposals (papers and panels): Monday February 5, 2018 Notification of Acceptance: Monday March 5, 2018 Full Paper Deadline: Monday April 23, 2018
Registration Deadline: Friday May 4, 2018 Conference Dates: Thursday & Friday May 17-18, 2018 More information on conference website: http://www.ier2018.info/ Sille Obelitz Søe, PhD Post.doc. New Book: Constructing Digital Cultures: Tweets, Trends, Race, and Gender.
by Judith Rosenbaum-Andre 15 Nov '17

15 Nov '17

Hello all, I’m very proud to announce the publication of my recent book by Lexington Books, “Constructing Digital Cultures: Tweets, Trends, Race, and Gender”, which examines how Twitter serves as the intersection between popular culture and social identity. You can find more information on the book in the blurb below and on the publisher’s website: https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781498546911/Constructing-Digital-Cultures-Tweets-… <https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781498546911/Constructing-Digital-Cultures-Tweets-…> Twitter has become a space where ordinary citizens and world-leaders alike share their thoughts and ideas. As a result, some argue Twitter has leveled the playing field, while others reject this view as too optimistic. This has led to an ongoing debate about the platform’s democratizing potential and whether activity on Twitter engenders change or merely magnifies existing voices. Constructing Digital Cultures explores these issues and more through an in-depth examination of how Twitter users collaborate to create cultural understandings. Looking closely at how user-generated narratives renegotiate dominant ideas about gender and race, this volume provides insight into the nature of digital culture produced on Twitter and the platform’s potential as a virtual public sphere. Constructing Digital Cultures investigates arenas of discussion often seen on Twitter—from entertainment and popular culture to politics, social justice issues, and advertising—and looks into how members of ethnic minority groups use and relate to the platform. Through an in-depth examination of individual expressions, the different kinds of dialogue that characterize the platform, and various ways in which people connect, Constructing Digital Cultures provides a critical, empirically based consideration of Twitter’s potential as an inclusive, egalitarian public sphere for the modern age. Sincerely, Judith Rosenbaum Judith Rosenbaum-Andre, PhD Assistant Professor Department of Communication and Journalism University of Maine 414 Dunn Hall Orono, ME 04469 www.juditherosenbaum.com @JudithRBaum
