Dear all, The call for entries to the TEI 2018 Arts and Performances is published. We welcome submissions of artworks and live performances from a wide range of practitioners and researchers in areas such as arts, design and technology including submissions from students and independent practitioners. In our daily lives, the digital has become the mundane, inseparable from our everyday routines and bringing us the ability to be interconnected on a global scale. The digital is integrated in every step of our lives, however, it’s often valued for its utilitarian use rather than looking at it as a creative or provocative medium. One way of approaching the post-digital is to bring analogue to meet the digital. In the post-digital era, we see a turn to vintage materials and craftsmanship, natural materials have come to the fore, and along with the practices of making them are once more being cherished. Designing for the post-digital does not mean blindly embracing nostalgia or turning away from technology – it means demystifying the digital through the design process and encouraging designs that equalise the status of digital and analogue, both in the materials and the practices. We invite interactive artworks, live performances, video prototypes/mockumentaries or any other type of artworks that use the post-digital to enrich emotional, bodily and cultural experiences through aesthetic explorations. Rather than focusing on representations of data and information, we welcome projects aiming for more provocative and critical reflection on the role of technology in our life. We seek submissions that articulate viewpoints and facilitate dialogue around the TEI conference themes as well as topics including but not limited to: • Humanization or dehumanization of technology in our contemporary world • Manifestations of electronic media – analogue as well as digital – in the physical world, and it’s possible political implications • Critical or discursive designs that engage with how human physical interactions may get represented in digital realms • Artworks engage with the “post-truth” era • Live Wizard-of-Oz performances that present believable or unbelievable interactions • Body as experience, instrument and interface • Artistic explorations of shape-, weight-, colour- and size changing artefacts • Novel interactions realised through traditional crafts or unconventional materials, professional artistry, craft or musicianship • Ephemeral interfaces • Haptic and multi-modal experiences • Mixed reality (virtual or augmented) from a tangible and embodied interaction perspective • Aesthetic experience through tangible or full body interactions ————————————————— Submissions: Submissions should be in the form of a short (4-6 page Extended Abstract Template) paper in PDF format that will appear in the TEI Proceedings and will be indexed in the Extended Abstracts portion of the ACM Digital Library. They may also include a short (5 minute maximum) video documenting the artwork. Submissions should include the author(s) name and affiliation – in other words, they are not blind. In addition, applicants MUST submit an additional installation information form along with their Extended Abstract describing the technical and logistical requirements of exhibiting/performing their work. All papers must be submitted electronically (.pdf) via the TEI Precision Conference site (https://new.precisionconference.com/submissions <https://new.precisionconference.com/submissions>). ————————————————— Selection process: Submissions will be selected based on their artistic merits and their engagement with issues relevant to the field of tangible and embedded interactive art. In addition, the logistical constraints of the venue may determine the eligibility of submitted projects. Confidentiality of submissions will be maintained during the review process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity. Review Criteria: • Relevant – The work must have a tangible aspect, in the form of an installation, performance, object or physical event. • Artistic – It must operate significantly and compellingly through its formal, conceptual, and experiential properties. • Embodied – The work must engage the human body beyond the traditional screen-pointer interface. • Computational – It must involve computational technology (digital or analog) in some aspect of its form or function. • Positioning – The work must be positioned within related areas of theory and/or practice. Accepted work will be exhibited in a venue that is open to conference delegates. Artists (or their delegates) will need to be available for installation and bump-out, and for facilitating interaction with their artwork at scheduled times. One author of each accepted submission must register for the conference before the early registration deadline in order for the final paper version to appear in the conference proceedings. 8th Annual Emerging Learning Design Conference - Call for Proposals Emerging Learning Design is now accepting proposals for the 8th Annual Emerging Learning Design Conference (#ELDc18) May 31st - June 1st, 2018 at Montclair State University. The theme for this year’s conference is >From Learner Centered to Learner Experience (LX) Education has changed more in the last 25 years than the 250 before that. Whereas once the norm was teacher-focused, sage-on-the-stage, a shift is still going on that places the learner at the core of the learning experience. Driven by the wide adoption of design thinking and user experience processes, LX pushes to make sure the learner voice is integrated more purposefully by sharing the experience development and iteration process with those for whom it is designed. >From an emphasis on scaffolding and creating software with Learner Centered Design to the wide adoption of design thinking and user experience processes with Learning Experience (LX) Design the goal continues to be to create effective and meaningful experiences for the learner. ELDc18 seeks to bring together diverse voices and innovative approaches to designing with the learner in mind. The following topics are examples, but are in no way exhaustive or limited: - How might learners be involved in the design and evaluation of learning experiences? - What are examples of personalized learning and what can we learn from these experiments? - How can we use learning analytics to better understand aspects of learning experiences? - What are some organizational approaches to incorporating user experience research and iteration into the learning design process? *CFP: “Data Cultures, Culture as Data” – Special Issue of Cultural Analytics* Guest editors – Amelia Acker & Tanya Clement, University of Texas at Austin *“Mathematically, visually, and narratively, it matters which figures figure figures, which systems systematize systems” Donna Haraway Environmental Humanities 6 (2015), p. 160.* Data have become pervasive in research in the humanities and the social sciences. New areas, objects, and situations for study have developed; and new methods for working with data are shepherded by new epistemologies and (potential) paradigms shifts. But data didn’t just happen to us. We have happened to data. Karen Barad writes that “We are responsible for the world in which we live not because it is an arbitrary construction of our choosing, but because it is sedimented out of particular practices that we have a role in shaping” (102). Yet where is our agency in that responsibility? What is the role we play in the data cultures/culture as data we form around sociomaterial practices? How can we better understand how these practices effect, and affect, the materialization of subjects, objects, and the relations between them? How can we engage our data culture in practical, critical, and generative ways? In every field, boundaries have been drawn between data and human as if making meaning with data is innocent work, but these boundaries are never innocent. Questions are emerging about data cultures and culture as data—urgent questions that range across concerns with the datafication of culture including the codification (or code-ification) of social and cultural bias; the integrity of data and of human agency, subjectivity, and identity. This special issue of Cultural Analytics invites responses to these concerns. In 2018, IUI will be held in the Hitotsubashi Hall in central Tokyo Japan from March 7th - 11th and will co-locate with the Japanese IPSJ Interactions conference. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. The incoming student will be under the supervision of Dr. Michael Zimmer, Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Information Policy Research. Among the student’s responsibilities will be to assist Dr. Zimmer in various aspects of the PERVADE project, including project management activities, supervising undergraduate assistants, data collection, coding and analysis, and other tasks as assigned. The student will also assist with literature reviews, manuscript preparation, and dissemination of results, including conference presentations and publication opportunities. The incoming student will be funded on a 50% annual Research Assistant appointment (renewable for up to four years), which includes tuition remission, a monthly stipend (including summer), and eligibility for university benefits.
