Accessing data from closed groups on FB?
by Ylva Hård af Segerstad 08 Nov '17

08 Nov '17

Hello everyone, Since Facebook removed the possibility to scrape data from closed groups, I’m wondering what the latest approach folks are now using to access data from closed groups? If it is possible to approach FB and pay for the data, what would be the procedure (and cost!) for this? Working to Collate a List of Global South Politicians on Twitter -- Advice and Suggestions Appreciated!
by A'Ndre Gonawela 07 Nov '17

07 Nov '17

Hello all, I am an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan, and I am currently working on a research project in which I collate a list of politicians in the Global South who are active on Twitter. I was hoping that I would be able to draw upon the advice/knowledge within this community regarding politicians in the Global South who have used Twitter as a communications medium, suggestions for additions to the list, and/or advice regarding a direction I could take in which I could effectively and efficiently collect such data. I have already looked at Twiplomacy and have attempted to get at least the Head of State, Head of Government, and a major opposition leader for each of the countries in question. If you were to take a look at the list as it is now (linked here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L9O4y804L5fK038d0cUfUx-w9OMVi9Ug8ZE… <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L9O4y804L5fK038d0cUfUx-w9OMVi9Ug8ZE…>), you would see that I have already obtained a listing of 50 Indian politicians and 50 Nigerian politicians. My ambitious idea is to get a similar number of entries for the other countries in the list (for example Kuwait, South Africa, etc.). However, since i’m not familiar with a number of the political situations in each of the countries, and knowing that there are many prominent political figures who do not necessarily have a governmental or elected position, I was hoping to get the larger community’s advice and inputs (such as suggestions on key politicians to add to the list) regarding this project. Moreover, for everyone’s convenience, I have also created a Google Form (Linked here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfhkD4nUOf1EMB-WwHKyiGaOknEqtjdbkX… <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfhkD4nUOf1EMB-WwHKyiGaOknEqtjdbkX…>) in which you could provide your suggestions regarding which politicians I might be missing from this list. I appreciate everyone’s assistance regarding this! Thank you, A’ndre Gonawela

This should be an interesting discussion. Many of us were surprised when Cloudflare compromised their safe harbor status in the wake of Charlottesville, however justified. Call for Submissions: Politicians and Social Media in the Global South
by Joyojeet Pal 07 Nov '17

07 Nov '17

*Call for Submissions* *Politicians and Social Media in the Global South* A seminar/workshop at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Date: April 14, 2018 2345 North Quad 105 S. State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109 In the last decade, politicians in various parts of the world have invested in social media campaigns, including in settings where a relatively small proportion of the voting public is actually online. Leaders may use social media for a range of reasons such as to actively court constituents, to present a narrative on their political program to the international community, or to use the affordances of social media to frame the agenda on a specific issue. Social media can also present a means for politicians to bypass the free professional media corps to directly speak to the electorate, and exercise greater control over the story crafted about them. After an early phase of enthusiasm on the scope of social media to bring decentralized power to the people, we increasingly have a balanced view of the potential and risks of online behaviour for democratic societies. Today, we see a social media environment in which a vast majority of major national politicians in countries throughout the world build social media presences for a diverse mix of these reasons. What do these developments mean for the future of political campaigning? What tactics have worked? How is the online strategy impacted by ideology, national economic priorities, or political structure? To get at these questions, the University of Michigan is organizing a one-day seminar workshop to examine contemporary scholarship on political social media in the Global South. The goals of the workshop are to 1. Track the major trends in the use and spread of social media in election campaigns and in Global South settings 2. Highlight the cases of specific politicians, parties, communities or political issues discussed on social media 3. Enable interdisciplinary conversations to appreciate and incorporate alternate approaches towards studying The event will feature a mix of talks and small workgroup sessions to explore these topics, with specific attention to politicians and political collectives. We invite contributions that are based on original research on studies of politicians or parties on social media in Global South settings using qualitative or quantitative perspectives including but not limited to data sciences, discourse analysis, digital humanities, and ethnographies. Topics may include: · Social media strategies of political accounts · Political Networks and Affiliation online · Identity and Political Social Media · Framing of political issues on social media · Mainstream media engagement with political social media · Social media use in e-Governance We also invite talks on citizen behaviour and issue framing online, so long as the work highlights a connection to party systems or individual politicians Limited funding support is available to presenting attendees who require funding. Please send abstracts of 1200 words (plus citations) of original work with the subject line “Michigan Politics in the Global South Workshop” on or before December 20, 2017, to joyojeet(a)umich.edu. All submissions must include a 250-word bio of the corresponding author. If a specific dataset is being used for the abstract, authors are encouraged to also include a short description of the data. *Organizers:* Joyojeet Pal, University of Michigan School of Information Ceren Budak, University of Michigan School of Information *Sponsored by* The University of Michigan International Institute The University of Michigan School of Information The University of Michigan Department of Communications The University of Michigan Center for South Asia Studies

CFP: Alternative Social Media special issue of Social Media + Society
by Robert W Gehl 06 Nov '17

06 Nov '17

After Social Media: Alternatives, New Beginnings, and Socialized Media ***Call for Proposals*** Editors: Fenwick McKelvey, Sean Lawson, and Robert W. Gehl The editors seeks 500 word abstracts for proposed articles for a special issue of Social Media + Society on "alternative social media." The editors welcome proposals from scholars, practitioners, and activists from across disciplinary boundaries so long as the work is critical and empirically rich. Our call starts with a question: what comes after social media? It is hard to imagine something other than the current configuration of social media – of Facebook and Twitter – but signs of discontent abound. Social media companies have become deputized to police and moderate whilst being accused of poisoning civil discourse. Their integration of advertising and targeting signals a new epoch of promotional culture, but no one trusts the media anymore. As Brooke Duffy argues in (Not) Getting Paid to Do What You Love, everyone can create, so long as they don’t mind growing broke doing so. In sum, today’s social media is broken... but what’s next? For the past several years, one answer to "what's next?" has been "alternative social media." Alternative social media encompasses a wide range of systems, from diaspora* to Ello to Tokumei. In contrast to what Robert Gehl calls "corporate social media," such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Pinterest, alternative social media (ASM) "allows for users to share content and connect with one another but also denies the commercialization of speech, allows users more access to shape the underlying technical infrastructure, and radically experiments with surveillance regimes" (see http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2056305115604338) Thus, alternative social media may be understood in relation to larger histories of alternative media, documented by scholars such as Megan Boler, Nick Couldry, Chris Atton, and Clemencia Rodriguez, and carried through into social media alternatives by collectives such as Unlike Us (http://networkcultures.org/unlikeus/) Earlier instances of ASM included diaspora*, built as a critical response to the growing dominance of Facebook in the late 2000s, with a goal of decentralizing social media data and allowing end users more control over their personal information. Later, decentralized systems, such as Twister and GNU social, came online as alternatives to Twitter. The Pinterest alternative Ello gained a lot of attention, especially due to its manifesto with the opening provocation: "Your social network is owned by advertisers." Alternatives to Facebook and Twitter have even appeared on the Dark Web (see https://socialmediaalternatives.org/archive/items/browse?tags=dark+web for examples). As they have developed over the past several years, alternatives decried the censorship and manipulation of content found in corporate social media. Building on this, new alternatives dedicated to "free speech" arose during and after the contentious elections in Western countries in 2016 and 2017, including the Twitter alternative Gab. Proclaiming its defense of free speech – especially against the perceived liberal bias of Silicon Valley-based corporate sites – Gab promises freedom for everyone, including the "alt right" and white supremacists, to speak. But other networks, such as the federated system Mastodon, have been built to allow for powerful moderation of discourse, with Codes of Conduct that often prohibit hate, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or racist speech. Indeed, while they are wildly divergent in their politics, both Gab and Mastodon have positioned themselves as antidotes to corporate social media. These debates over speech in ASM echo the longstanding tension identified by alternative media scholars, where many alternative media developers seek to socialize media and bring it in line with leftist politics, but see their discourses appropriated by right-wing media organizations. Regardless of whether they are right or left, alternative social media face a simply reality: they just aren't popular. Compared to the billions of Twitter and Facebook users, alternative sites' user bases are tiny. Whether or not their goal ought to be massive scale, the powerful network effects of corporate social media – as well as the bewildering array of alternatives – certainly have stifled the growth of the alternatives. Still, the alternatives deserve critical attention, because they force us to rethink what we mean by "social media." What tethers so many people to so few corporate sites? And what actual "alternatives" to corporate social media do the current slate of alternative social media platforms propose? Topics that may be explored in this special issue of Social Media + Society might include: * ethnographic or participant observation engagements with alternative social media communities * software studies analysis of shifts in underlying ASM technologies * narratives from practitioners who have built, moderated, or extensively participated in ASM * comparative analysis of two or more ASM platforms * studies of ASM as political, technical or cultural discourses or desires * regulatory and policy discussion regarding controversies involving ASM * speculative proposals or fictions about new ASM that address existing problems * analysis of appropriation of ASM innovations by corporate social media systems ***Timeline/Important Dates [subject to change] DECEMBER 20 2017: 500 word abstracts and CVs/resumes may be sent to asm(a)robertwgehl.org JANUARY 20 2018: Acceptance notifications sent to authors MAY 15 2018: Full drafts due to asm(a)robertwgehl.org JULY 15 2018: Comments sent to authors by editors SEPTEMBER 15 2018: Final drafts submitted to Social Media + Society for peer review FEBRUARY 2019: Special Issue Publication Questions? New Book: Media Convergence and Deconvergence
by Peil Corinna 06 Nov '17

06 Nov '17

*** Apologies for cross-posting *** Hi everyone, we are very pleased to announce the latest addition to the Palgrave/IAMCR Global Transformations in Media and Communication Research Series, the book MEDIA CONVERGENCE AND DECONVERGENCE, edited by Sergio Sparviero, Corinna Peil & Gabriele Balbi (2017). This book includes chapters by Kathrin Friederike Müller, Jutta Röser, Luca Barra, Massimo Scaglioni, Caja Thimm, Uwe Hasebrink, Sascha Hölig, Mark Eisenegger, Mario Schranz, Angelo Gisler, Lothar Mikos, Matthew Allen, Dal Yong Jin, Jim Rogers, Hilde Van den Bulck, Paul Murschetz, Christopher Ali, Fei Jiang, Kuo Huang and Yanran Sun. https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-319-51289-1_1 About the book The book starts out from a critical view on media convergence and aims at explaining processes of change in different areas of media and communication by introducing and emphasizing a perspective on media deconvergence. Taking into account processes of diversification and fragmentation as well as unresolved ambiguities that are part of media convergence or unfold in parallel with it, deconvergence stands for the refusal to recognize the ongoing changes as linear, connected processes leading to predictable solutions. The focus on deconvergence can thus help shed light on the ambivalent nature of media convergence and the simultaneity of competing forces such as coalescence and drifting apart, or linearity as discontinuity. Its purpose is to provide alternative viewpoints, which are often overlooked in the dominant readings of the convergence concept. Table of Contents Part I Introduction 1 Media Convergence Meets Deconvergence (Corinna Peil and Sergio Sparviero) 2 Deconstructing "Media Convergence": A Cultural History of the Buzzword, 1980s-2010s (Gabriele Balbi) Part II Media Audiences and Usage 3 Convergence in Domestic Media Use?
