Lit request on analyzing tweets
by Luis Hestres 01 Nov '17

Hi all, Can someone recommend any must-read literature on how to analyze tweets with images holistically? Content analyses that treat the tweet’s text as indivisible from its image would be great. ICA Pre-Conf. Call for papers: Applying the Capabilities Approach to Media and Communications
by Heather Ford 01 Nov '17

01 Nov '17

For those of you interested in capabilities approaches, a call below for contributions to a pre-conference for the upcoming ICA conference in Prague (deadline for abstracts is December 15): CALL FOR PAPERS INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE 2018 PRECONFERENCE Applying the Capabilities Approach to Media and Communications May 24, 2018 Venue: Main Conference Hotel Abstract Deadline: December 15, 2017 Recent years have seen a growing interest in the concept of justice in media and communication studies. In the more general literature on social justice, an important contribution has come from the capabilities approach developed by Indian economist Amartya Sen and US philosopher Martha Nussbaum. The theory challenges utilitarian narratives and liberal notions of redistributive justice and has become the cornerstone of the United Nations' Human Development Index. Despite its potentially great relevance for media industries and production studies, information and communication for development, telecommunications and media policy, and digital media research, there has been limited use of the capabilities approach across the media, communication and cultural studies field. By bringing together for the first time scholars engaged in applying the capabilities approach to media and communications, this ICA preconference advances an agenda to create a new interdisciplinary focus in the field. It aims to build conceptual bridges across emerging frameworks for studying communicative capabilities, media practice, and digital literacies and to engage with normative debates about media justice, creative justice, and data justice. The preconference directly engages with the central theme of the ICA Annual Conference on "Voices" by inviting reflection on the ways we can address inequalities and enhance communicative opportunities for media workers and users in a global context. The preconference will open with a keynote address by Nick Couldry (London School of Economics) and feature panels from invited speakers applying the capabilities approach to policy debates, development interventions, and normative media theories. We also invite paper submissions from scholars interested in this topic and we will accept a small number of papers from this open call. CONFIRMED PARTICIPANTS: Nick Couldry (LSE) Heather Ford (University of Leeds) David Hesmondhalgh (University of Leeds) Tom Jacobson (Temple University) Krishna Jayakar (Penn State) Kari Karppinen (University of Helsinki) Dorothea Klein (Sheffield University) Robin Mansell (LSE) Giles Moss (University of Leeds) Jonathan Corpus Ong (University of Massachusetts Amherst) Amit Schejter (Ben-Gurion University of the Negev / Penn State) Noam Tirosh (Ben-Gurion University of the Negev) Thomas Tufte (University of Leicester) Abstract of up to 500 words and a short bio of the author(s) should be sent to Prof Amit Schejter (pennstateiip(a)psu.edu<mailto:pennstateiip@psu.edu>) by December 15, 2017. Please write IIPCAP: YOURNAME in the subject line of the email. Abstracts and bios should be sent as Word attachments, each in a separate document, one saved as YOURNAME:Abstract and the other as YOURNAME:Bio. Abstracts not sent according to the above instructions and not accompanied by a short bio will not be reviewed. Authors will be notified of their acceptance before January 12, 2018. A small number of abstracts will be accepted to the workshop and full papers are expected by May 1, 2018. Authors presenting at the pre-conference will be invited to submit their completed papers for review in a special issue of the Journal of Information Policy (www.jip-online.org<http://www.jip-online.org/>) to be published in 2018. The preconference will take place at the ICA venue on Thursday, May 24, 9AM-5PM. With financial support from the Institute for Information Policy at Penn State, cost per participant will be $50 (including two coffee breaks and lunch). Call for Papers: Journalism in the Age of Partisan Politics, Political Protests, and President Trump
by Harrison, Teresa M 30 Oct '17

30 Oct '17

Special Issue: Electronic Journal of Communication Journalism in The Age of Partisan Politics, Political Protests, and President Trump The current news environment is saturated with political tension and divisive issues. Legacy news media and contemporary news outlets race to publish compelling content as they struggle to maintain their audiences. Political leaks have become a staple of modern news. Journalists have found themselves covering ideologically charged protests involving immigration reform, Black Lives Matter, the KKK, environmental issues, and Civil War statues, while at the same time finding their authority and credibility challenged by persistent accusations of ethical violations, bias, and corruption. Meanwhile, social media sites provide an avenue for the public to present their own coverage and commentary related to all of these issues. Indeed, President Trump has turned toward social media as a way of presenting his own perspective on daily events. Further, online media and traditional news providers compete with the rumors, conspiracies, and “fake” news that permeates information space. Increasingly, social media readers fail to distinguish fabricated news from authentic news. This special issue will focus on journalism during this time of social upheaval and political partisanship. All theoretical and methodological perspectives are welcome. Possible topics for papers might include, but are not limited to: * ethical coverage of politics * journalistic credibility/ audience trust in the current political climate * political cartoonists’ response to political protests * The challenges of “fake news” to legacy and online news sources * The relationship between journalists and politicians * The role of political leaks in news coverage * Journalistic safety while covering political protests * Citizen journalists’ use of social media to share political content * The use of social media as a newsgathering tool * Audience perception of news coverage * The role of objectivity/fairness in political coverage * The significance of political experts as news sources * The role of the news pundit in political coverage * The value of political news and information Deadline: Submit manuscripts through EJC's online submission system at http://ejcojs.cios.org<http://ejcojs.cios.org/> by January 15, 2018 for consideration. Please be sure to submit to the journal section entitled: Special Issue: Journalism in The Age of Partisan Politics, Political Protests, and President Trump. Format: Papers should be prepared in APA 6th Ed. Style. Remove all author-identifying information from the main manuscript for blind review. Manuscripts should be single spaced with tables/figures inserted where they belong; double-space between headings, subheadings, and adjacent sections; avoid breaking tables across pages. Please send manuscripts in .doc, .docx, or .rtf formats (not html). Questions: Please address any questions to the Special Issue Editor, Jenn Burleson Mackay, Va Tech, email: jemackay(a)vt.edu. Professorship in Media Studies, Univ. of Amsterdam
by Richard Rogers 30 Oct '17

30 Oct '17

For the online job posting, see http://bit.ly/UvA-Prof-CMC Professor of Cross-media Culture, Department of Media Studies, University of Amsterdam Closing date 20 November 2017 Vacancy number 17-495 The Faculty of Humanities provides education and conducts research with a strongly international profile in a large number of disciplines in the field of language, history, and culture. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutions in the capital city. Almost 1,000 employees are affiliated with the Faculty, which has about 8,000 students. The Faculty of Humanities consists of eight departments. Media and Culture encompasses film studies, cross-media culture as well as global media studies. Together these scholarly fields and programs offer a comprehensive and critical analysis with both theoretical and practice-based modes of inquiry concerned with audio-visual culture as well as online and digital culture both in the Netherlands and internationally. For the study of media and culture there are two main entry points. The first is the study of the culture of media, including practices of production, programming formats and media aesthetics. The culture of production is studied alongside that of consumption, especially engagement and agency of the spectator, viewer, user and navigator. Media production and consumption are continually changing and challenged with the advent of new media, where there are new mobile screens, media formats, users and cultures of commodification and control. The second entry point is the study of media in culture, from the contents of cinema, domestic and urban screens, to the software and apps on mobile devices and tablets. In the shift from informational to social media, online culture is increasingly shaping sociality through public displays of connection and taste. More specifically, media and culture takes up questions surrounding the cultural origins and effects of media, drawing on traditions ranging from media archaeology and genealogy to cultural studies, political economy and critical theory. Media theory, in all its medium-specific diversity remains central as do media research techniques widely applied across the curricula. Substantively, Film studies engages with the transformative shifts in both the materiality as well as the screening of cinema. Cross-media culture addresses the radical transformation of popular media, including television, in the age of mobility, second screens, participatory culture, and global distribution. Global media studies provides means by which film, television and new media may be compared across cultures and borders, and inquires into how the study of media allows us to access the dynamics of globalisation. The Media and Culture team consists of four professors: next to the chair of Cross-media culture, there are chairs in Film Studies, Digital Heritage and Globalisation. The other team in the department is Media and Information, containing chairs in Journalism, New Media and digital culture, Archival studies, Cultural information studies and Computational and Digital Humanities. Profile Contemporary social and cultural practices – from personal friendships to political election campaigns, from education to commercial forms of entertainment – are shaped by a matrix of different media and by the continuous transformation of media forms and media technologies. While TV – with its reality shows, spectacular live events, and transmissions of global catastrophes as well as its continuing offer of imported and home-made fiction series and characteristic forms of storytelling, – is still of major importance, its impact changes as it is augmented and partly replaced by social media, mobile phones, and ‘second screens’. Therefore it is paramount to understand the specific aesthetic, social, political and economic dynamics of different media and the way in which content and user practices travel across these media, provoking new connections and modifications. The professorship for Cross Media Culture is expected to stimulate and develop approaches from different disciplines, ranging from cultural studies to critical theory and from political economy to production studies. The professor is furthermore expected to actively participate in academic and public debates on the on-going transformation of media culture. The knowledge of the history and continuing relevance of film, radio and television will be the starting point to map the conceptual, social, and cultural changes that come with digital, mobile and social media. The Chair in Cross-media culture is expected to cover, both in teaching and research, several of the following topics: • the transformation of critical media theory in the context of institutional and technological changes in media landscapes (e.g. discussions around creativity, materialism, ecology, convergence); • the changing role of media institutions, new forms of mediated politics, and the growing importance of social media, continual technological shifts in content production, circulation and transformation; • the changing relationship between modes of media production, media aesthetics, and user practices. The professor is expected to contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration with the film and new media sections of the Media Studies department, to expanding teaching and research links with public partners (such as EYE, Beeld en Geluid, Stedelijk Museum, City of Amsterdam), to expanding opportunities for students in practice-based learning and to developing new research and teaching initiatives. The professor in cross-media culture is expected to play an important role in both BA and MA teaching as well as PhD supervision, in particular in the television and cross-media culture track. In terms of research, this position has closest affinity with the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) and the National Research School for Media Studies (RMeS), and, depending on the profile of the candidate, the Amsterdam Centre for Globalisation Studies (ACGS). Candidates for the position are expected to meet the following requirements: • a PhD in media studies or a related field; • an excellent international reputation in the field of media studies; • an excellent academic publication record; • an experienced and enthusiastic teacher on all levels of academic training; • experience in developing new teaching programs; • experience with collaborative projects; • a proven track record of acquiring external research funding; • experience in the supervision of PhD-tracks; • an extensive national and international network with other academic and cultural institutions; • the ability to contribute to knowledge exchange in public as well as academic settings; • the ability to establish productive connections with other academic disciplines within as well as outside the department; • proven excellent management and leadership qualities. All foreign employees appointed at the Faculty of Humanities are expected to have a good command of both written and spoken Dutch within two years. Further information For further details, interested parties should contact: • Mr. Hotze Mulder, secretary of the selection committee T: +31 (0)20 525 3066 • Prof. Rens Bod, chair of the committee T: +31 (0)20 525 4946 Appointment The appointment will be permanent. The gross salary will normally conform to professorial scale 2, between €5,334 and €7,766 gross per month (€74,441 to €108,382 per annum, including 8% holiday pay and an 8,3% end of year payment) on a full-time basis in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) for Dutch Universities. In certain cases, however, different terms of employment may be offered. Job application Candidates are invited to submit a letter of application in Dutch or English no later than Monday, 20 November 2017, accompanied with a CV and a list of publications. The application should be addressed to The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Fred Weerman, Kloveniersburgwal 48, 1012 CX Amsterdam and may be sent in pdf-form by email to Hotze Mulder (see online job posting, http://bit.ly/UvA-Prof-CMC) Please indicate vacancy number 17-495 in the subject field. Applications will be received by a selection committee headed by the chair of the department of Media Studies, Prof. Rens Bod. Following a procedure which may involve a formal leadership assessment and a public trial lecture, the committee will make its final recommendation to the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. CFP #AoIR2018 Montreal
by Andrew Herman 30 Oct '17

30 Oct '17

Greetings from the #AoIR 2018 Montreal Conference Committee For those of you who were not present in Tartu for the great unveiling of the CFP for next year's AoIR Annual Conference, we are pleased to circulate here in all of its glory. Please let is know if you have any questions and, the conference deities willing, we hope to see you in Montreal! Andrew Herman Cindy Tekkobe Melanie Millette Jeremy Hunsinger Mary Elizabeth Luka Nathan Rambukkana The overarching theme of AoIR2018 will be Transnational Materialities. The theme is broadly rooted in the burgeoning implications of current massive global migrations of people and data, within the context of a growing materialist movement in cultural and media studies, media archaeology, software studies, science and technology studies, feminist materialism, object oriented ontologies of post-humanist philosophy, critical political economy, actor-network theory, and the like. These heterogeneous and polyvalent perspectives have opened up spaces for interrogating the socio-technical assemblages which comprise “the internet”. The “material turn” within internet research seeks to firmly ground critical analyses in the manifold physicalities and corporealities embodied and engendered within such networked technologies. This turn has been embraced with enthusiasm in Canadian communication and media studies, whose intellectual tradition has been shaped by a productive confluence of medium theory (e.g., Marshall McLuhan), spatial materialism of communication systems (e.g., Harold Innis), feminist media and social justice theory (e.g., Gertrude J. Robinson, Dorothy Smith), and political economy of media institutions and practices (e.g., Vincent Mosco). As a settler nation with complex contested histories, vast geographies, and ongoing struggles to achieve global economic impact, Canada is situated firmly in the middle of the pack globally when it comes to internet presence. Like so many other nations, Canada’s transnational aspirations are deeply tied to its efforts to integrate and grow a diverse population. Such interconnected orientations are increasingly mediated by internet technologies. These interconnections are materialist in nature, but deeply transnational in both institutional and cultural construction. This leads us to the theme of the conference: transnational materialities. While providing a direction, this theme is not meant to be limiting, as the spaces within it allow for reflexivity, critique, construction, interpretation, and a myriad of other positionalities. We seek research and analysis that finds its provenance in a multiplicity of methodologies, from qualitative work such as textual analysis, to quantitative projects, such as big data, to mixed methods projects that employ both kinds of research. Topics may include, but are not limited to: * global infrastructures, their networks, and materialities * the politics and policies of the internet’s transnational and material contexts, including the materiality of communication regulations and policies including issues around ICT4D, community informatics, piracy and copyright, and network neutrality * intersections of technology/race/ethnicity/embodiment, including First Nations and Indigenous networks and communication practices, and Francophone and minority language cultures, politics, and challenges in the context of transnational materialities * the internet as a set of spatial paradigms in material terms: information highway, data centres, cyberspace, virtual space, net, web, network, tubes * the materiality of new digital intermediaries such as the Internet of Things, AI, robots/robotics, automations, algorithms, VR, teledildonics * contemporary intersections of gender, race, class (etc.) and technology, including feminist interventions and backlash movements such as GamerGate * the role of internet technology in building affinity movements and transcending borders, e.g., the materiality of the hashtag across platforms, political solidarities across transnational borders, global fan cultures and media, and the role of internet technologies in the circulation of and resistance to “alt-right” discourses and hate speech * the shifting political and creative economies of streaming media, such as YouTube celebrities; porn channels becoming producers of mainstream television shows (xHamster) and educational content (PornHub); assemblages of “Internet Cats”; or weird/strange transnationalities/materialities of the internet * the politics of platforms as extensions and/or erasures of the self * social media, email, platforms, podcasts, etc. as actors/actants in networks * materialities of big/small/wide/deep data, its research methods and related possibilities 15 January 2018 Submission site opens for #AoIR2018 Montréal 1 March 2018 Submissions due for PAPERS, PANELS, ROUNDTABLES and FISHBOWLS, EXPERIMENTAL SESSIONS, and PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS 15 April 2018 Nominations for Nancy Baym Book Award<https://aoir.org/awards/nancy-baym-annual-book-award/> and Best Dissertation Award<https://aoir.org/awards/dissertation-award/> due 5 May 2018 Notification of acceptances for presenters 20 May 2018 Applications due for conference travel SCHOLARSHIPS and for DOCTORAL COLLOQUIUM 1 August 2018 Early Bird Registration Deadline for all presenters 15 August 2018 The full #AoIR2018 Conference Program goes live. 15 August 2018 Deadline for Visa Letter requests (for presenters only – Visa Letters not provided for attendees) 30 September 2018 Deadline for uploading accepted, non-blind, final version of paper and panel submissions 10 October 2018 Pre-conference Workshops 11-13 October 2018 Main Conference
