Reminder: Call for submissions - TEI'18 (Stockholm) Arts Track
by Asreen Rostami 28 Oct '17

28 Oct '17

[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message] Dear all, Submissions to TEI’18 Arts Tracks are due next week. We are happy to announce that a limited number of discounts will be available for self funded artists and practitioners taking part in the conference, please contact the Arts chairs for more information. We welcome submissions of artworks and live performances from a wide range of practitioners and researchers in areas such as arts, design and technology including submissions from students and independent practitioners. Important dates: • November 4th, 2017 (HST): Submission deadline • December 4th, 2017 (HST): Notification of acceptance • December 18th, 2017 (HST): Camera ready deadline https://tei.acm.org/2018/arts-track/ <https://tei.acm.org/2018/arts-track/> We encourage you to share this call with your networks and those who might be interested in submitting to the arts track. ————————————————— Call for submissions: The Arts Track at TEI 2018 invites submissions of art installations and live performances exploring the post-digital. In our daily lives, the digital has become the mundane, inseparable from our everyday routines and bringing us the ability to be interconnected on a global scale. The digital is integrated in every step of our lives, however, it’s often valued for its utilitarian use rather than looking at it as a creative or provocative medium. One way of approaching the post-digital is to bring analogue to meet the digital. In the post-digital era, we see a turn to vintage materials and craftsmanship, natural materials have come to the fore, and along with the practices of making them are once more being cherished. Designing for the post-digital does not mean blindly embracing nostalgia or turning away from technology – it means demystifying the digital through the design process and encouraging designs that equalise the status of digital and analogue, both in the materials and the practices. We invite interactive artworks, live performances, video prototypes/mockumentaries or any other type of artworks that use the post-digital to enrich emotional, bodily and cultural experiences through aesthetic explorations. Rather than focusing on representations of data and information, we welcome projects aiming for more provocative and critical reflection on the role of technology in our life. We seek submissions that articulate viewpoints and facilitate dialogue around the TEI conference themes as well as topics including but not limited to: • Humanization or dehumanization of technology in our contemporary world • Manifestations of electronic media – analogue as well as digital – in the physical world, and it’s possible political implications • Critical or discursive designs that engage with how human physical interactions may get represented in digital realms • Artworks engage with the “post-truth” era • Live Wizard-of-Oz performances that present believable or unbelievable interactions • Body as experience, instrument and interface • Artistic explorations of shape-, weight-, colour- and size changing artefacts • Novel interactions realised through traditional crafts or unconventional materials, professional artistry, craft or musicianship • Ephemeral interfaces • Haptic and multi-modal experiences • Mixed reality (virtual or augmented) from a tangible and embodied interaction perspective • Aesthetic experience through tangible or full body interactions ————————————————— Submissions: Submissions should be in the form of a short (4-6 page Extended Abstract Template) paper in PDF format that will appear in the TEI Proceedings and will be indexed in the Extended Abstracts portion of the ACM Digital Library. They may also include a short (5 minute maximum) video documenting the artwork. Submissions should include the author(s) name and affiliation – in other words, they are not blind. In addition, applicants MUST submit an additional installation information form along with their Extended Abstract describing the technical and logistical requirements of exhibiting/performing their work. All papers must be submitted electronically (.pdf) via the TEI Precision Conference site (https://new.precisionconference.com/submissions <https://new.precisionconference.com/submissions>). ————————————————— Selection process: Submissions will be selected based on their artistic merits and their engagement with issues relevant to the field of tangible and embedded interactive art. In addition, the logistical constraints of the venue may determine the eligibility of submitted projects. Confidentiality of submissions will be maintained during the review process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity. Review Criteria: • Relevant – The work must have a tangible aspect, in the form of an installation, performance, object or physical event. • Artistic – It must operate significantly and compellingly through its formal, conceptual, and experiential properties. • Embodied – The work must engage the human body beyond the traditional screen-pointer interface. • Computational – It must involve computational technology (digital or analog) in some aspect of its form or function. • Positioning – The work must be positioned within related areas of theory and/or practice. Accepted work will be exhibited in a venue that is open to conference delegates. Artists (or their delegates) will need to be available for installation and bump-out, and for facilitating interaction with their artwork at scheduled times. One author of each accepted submission must register for the conference before the early registration deadline in order for the final paper version to appear in the conference proceedings. UPDATE: We are happy to announce that a limited number of discounts will be available for self funded artists and practitioners taking part in the conference, please contact the Arts chairs related to your submission if you would like to take advantage of these discounts. If you have questions about the Arts Track for TEI 2018, please contact chairs <mailto:arts_chairs@tei.acm.org <mailto:arts_chairs@tei.acm.org>> Roby Taylor, Asreen Rostami and Vygandas “Vegas” Šimbelis prior to deadline. --- Asreen Rostami Department of Computer and System Sciences Stockholms University, Sweden TEI’18 Art and Perfromance Chair: http://tei.acm.org <http://tei.acm.org/> Work Phone: +468161649 asreen(a)dsv.su.se <mailto:asreen@dsv.su.se>

CFP - Special issue on the Big Data Challenge. From Big Data in Politics to the Politics of Big Data
by Elena Pavan 27 Oct '17

27 Oct '17

Dear all, we are glad to announce that we are editing a special issue of the open access, online peer reviewed journal Partecipazione e Confiltto - Participation and Conflict. *Deadline for full papers submission is the 10th of March 2018*. If interested, please read below for further information or check PACO's website at http://siba-ese.unisalento.it/index.php/paco/announcement/view/69 <http://siba-ese.unisalento.it/index.php/paco/announcement/view/69> Alice and Elena ** *The Big Data Challenge. From Big Data in Politics to the Politics of Big Data* A special issue for PArtecipazione e COnflitto (PACO) Guest Editors: Alice Mattoni and Elena Pavan *Call for Full Articles* This special issue aims to open a much-needed space for developing a critical and informed reflection on the multi-faceted nexus between Big Data and the study of political participation dynamics. It understands Big Data not solely in terms of large-scale datasets of textual or digital data that require us to tune our research practices. More radically, it starts from a conceptualization of Big Data as a complex set of cultural, political and scientific knowledge practices that challenge the traditional modes in which research questions are posed and framed, analyses are performed, as well as the ways in which results are communicated to the public and thus affect public discourse and debates. It also invites us to orient our attention towards emergent forms of activism reclaiming citizens’ agency towards the production, management and exploitation of (big) data, including - such as data activism, statactivism, data justice struggles, open data movements. Consistently, the special issue aims to provide a solid contribution towards the investigation of two interrelated aspects. On the one hand, it will engage with how Big Data are leveraging our understanding of participation and contentious dynamics within complex societies providing new methodological and informational resources to investigate structures, contents and mechanisms of citizens’ public engagement. On the other, it will contribute to develop a specific take on how Big Data become a contested research and political terrain characterized by strong power dynamics between private and public actors, and entwining with governance processes at all levels - from the national to the transnational one. Against this background, this special issue welcomes *full articles submissions* employing different theoretical, empirical and methodological approaches on Big Data, adopting a single-case or a comparative multinational and/or multiplatform perspective and exploring one or more of the following thematic areas: - Big Data, public opinion and institutional politics (party dynamics, political communications, etc.) - Big Data and the study of contemporary forms of collective action and unconventional political participation (social movements, digital activism, etc.) - Reflections on the epistemological and methodological implications and possibilities brought by Big Data in the study of political participation and contentious dynamics - Deconstructing and approaching critically datafication - Intersections between Big Data and governance processes. *Timeline*: *Submission of Full Articles: 10th March 2018* Provision of peer reviewed feedback: 15st May 2018 Submission of revised accepted articles: 19th June 2018 Publication of the Special issue: 15th July 2018 Articles should be no longer than 10,000 words, including notes and references. A maximum of 10 articles will be published. CFP: 13th IFIP TC9 Human Choice and Computers Conference: ‚”This Changes Everything”
by Charles M. Ess 27 Oct '17

27 Oct '17

Dear AoIR-ists, with the usual apologies for cross-postings and duplications: please share widely with those you think might be interested - 13th IFIP TC9 Human Choice and Computers Conference: ‚”This Changes Everything” – in conjunction with the World Computer Congress, 19th-21st September 2018, Poznan, Poland. Conference Chairs: David Kreps, Kai Kimppa, Louise Leenen, Charles Ess <http://www.hcc13.net> Conference Theme - Track Chairs: David Kreps and Charles Ess This Changes Everything. Many of us likely associate this phrase with Steve Jobs’ introduction of the iPhone in 2007. But there are clearly other candidates for the ”This,” e.g., the oncoming bioinformatics redesign of species or the fourth industrial revolution of artificially intelligent robots. But ”This” is also, without question, the greatest challenge of our age: climate change. Accordingly, the 13th Human Choice and Computers conference centers on the question: ICT and Climate Change - What Can We Do? The Conference invites both academics and practitioners in the field of ICTs and Society to take stock of their engagements, review their focus, and assess what and how each and every one of us might be able to contribute to the transformations needed (and already beginning) in local, regional, national and international contexts, towards becoming the diverse, environmentally and socially conscious, and thriving communities. We welcome submissions that speak directly and less directly to the conference theme. “This Changes Everything” implicates both climate change and the interrelated global challenges most central to the Working Groups of TC9 and its National Society representatives, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Submissions are also welcome, not just to the General Conference Track on change, but to the other foci of the Track Themes. (For complete track descriptions, please see the extended CFP on the conference website, <http://www.hcc13.net>.) Track themes: * Societal implications, effects and impacts of artificial intelligence - Track Chairs: Diane Whitehouse and Christopher Zielinski (WG9.2) * Including critical issues beyond the ICT context in codes of conduct/ethics -Track Chairs: Kai Kimppa and Penny Duquenoy (SIG9.2.2) * Our digital lives - Track Chairs: Petros Chamakiotis and Brad McKenna (WG9.5) * This changed everything - Track Chair: Christopher Leslie (WG9.7) * Gender in ICT - Track Chairs: Sisse Finken, Christina Mörtberg and Johanna Sefyrin (WG9.8) * ICT and sustainability - Track Chairs: Thomas Lennerfors and Per Fors (WG9.9) Climate risk, cyber-security, and the dark web - Track Chair: Louise Leenen (WG9.10) * Privacy, data protection, and automation - Track Chair: Taro Komukai (Japan National Representative) * ICT and an inclusive society - Track Chairs: Hossana Twinomurinzi and Jackie Phahlamohlaka (South Africa National Representative) Submissions Full papers are invited that address the Conference Theme, or any of the above Track Themes. All papers will be subject to double-blind review. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to revise their work in keeping with reviewers’ comments prior to formatting, and inclusion in the Programme and Proceedings. Travel, accommodation and all other details will be posted when available at http://www.hcc13.net/ and at http://wcc2018.put.poznan.pl Submissions will be through Springer’s OCS Website (via hcc13.net) with proceedings published in the AICT Springer Book series immediately prior to the conference. Important Dates Full paper deadline 15th January 2018 Reviews and revisions during February, March and April, 2018. Final Papers by 30th April, 2018.
