Censoring content is a growth industry, and Internet and social network shutdowns in response to civil protest and unrest are on the rise. Online surveillance is exploding and people are being increasingly intimidated or detained because of their online activities. Therefore it is vital for civil society and the media to work together in order to shape the Internet of the future and ensure it remains in the service of democracy. And the role of international media assistance needs to be reconsidered in this context. We are embarking on an exciting, challenging effort to reinvigorate how we teach FYW at Texas Tech. Already we teach almost 3,000 students a semester in introduction and advanced composition. We want to increase that number, but just as important, we want to improve the experience of the students enrolled in FYW, as well as those assigned to teach it as graduate teaching assistants. The successful candidate will contribute to our efforts to remake FYW, teaching 6 large-section (100-plus students per section with breakout sessions taught by TAs) FYW courses per year, as well as mentoring graduate student teaching assistants (TAs) assigned to support that teaching. Texas Tech University is designated as a Carnegie Tier One (Highest Research Activity) institution. It has a law school, a medical school, and colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, Architecture, Business Administration, Engineering, Human Sciences, Media and Communication, and Visual and Performing Arts. In what contexts have privacy preserving technologies been deployed to unlock new types of data analysis while guaranteeing meaningful protection of privacy? 2. Privacy and Ethics in User Research. Data-driven research conducted to understand people’s behavior online raises questions about the types of research practices and techniques that should be used to respect privacy (e.g. around de-identification and re-identification of individuals through data-mining, linking, merging and re-using of large datasets). How might ethical considerations guide new data collection and use practices so that they respect privacy and promote societal benefits for all? 3. People-Centered Privacy Design. The privacy landscape has for too long been dominated by long policy statements and formal consent processes. By leveraging design thinking, there is an opportunity to raise the bar and reorient our approach to privacy in a way that puts people at the center. How can organizations use design thinking to provide people better visibility and control over their data? And how can a more people-focused approach enable us to reorient toward a modern, innovative approach to privacy? (apologies for cross-posting) communication +1 is seeking proposals for Volume 7, "Intersectionalities and Media Archaeologies" Edited by Zachary McDowell and Nathanael Bassett The emerging field of media archaeology has opened up new avenues of research across fields and provided a way to challenge accepted historical layers of social and technical arrangements. Drawing from a variety of entangled theories and methodologies, bringing in German media theory, new materialism, digital humanities, software studies, cultural studies, Foucauldian frameworks, and others, media archaeology interrogates dead media, alternative technological schema, the composition of infrastructures, everyday objects, and other phenomena, providing new insights and recontextualization for scholars from an array of backgrounds. However, despite the interconnected promise of Media Archaeology, the practices and theories remain limited in their engagement with much of critical cultural communication and media studies. In the introduction to “What is Media Archaeology,” Jussi Parikka notes that “we need to be prepared to refresh media archaeology itself.” This collection seeks essays by critical scholars of communication participating in this ongoing emergence of media archaeology as method or theorization to study mediums, objects, conjunctures, and other areas of interest to the study of communication. This collection is meant to highlight and connect ways to theorize and “refresh” the concepts related to media archaeology in connection with the study of communication. We encourage intersectional engagements with and applications of media archaeological practices as they function theoretically, methodologically, spatially, institutionally, and in relation to the study of communication. With this collection we hope to help provide communication researchers a space in which to explore the promise of media archaeology as a critical set of lenses in the study of communication.
