Columbia Univ. "Plain Text" event today
by Isabelle Zaugg 02 Nov '17

02 Nov '17

Dear All, Writing to warmly invite you to an event today at Columbia University (see below). Isabelle Isabelle A. Zaugg, PhD Postdoctoral Research Scholar Mellon-Sawyer Seminar in Global Language Justice Institute for Comparative Language and Society Columbia University Thursday, 2 November 2017 at 6:15pm The Heyman Center, Second Floor Common Room<https://heymancenter.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8cc509338c6ddce0ed48…>, Columbia University<https://heymancenter.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8cc509338c6ddce0ed48…> New Books in the Arts & Sciences —panel discussions celebrating recent work by the Columbia Faculty Plain Text: The Poetics of Computation<https://heymancenter.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8cc509338c6ddce0ed48…> by Dennis Tenen This book challenges the ways we read, write, store, and retrieve information in the digital age. Computers—from electronic books to smart phones—play an active role in our social lives. Our technological choices thus entail theoretical and political commitments. Dennis Tenen takes up today's strange enmeshing of humans, texts, and machines to argue that our most ingrained intuitions about texts are profoundly alienated from the physical contexts of their intellectual production. Drawing on a range of primary sources from both literary theory and software engineering, he makes a case for a more transparent practice of human–computer interaction. Plain Text is thus a rallying call, a frame of mind as much as a file format. It reminds us, ultimately, that our devices also encode specific modes of governance and control that must remain available to interpretation. Dennis Tenen is Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, where he is a Co-Founder of Columbia's Group for Experimental Research Methods in the Humanities. Thanks and congrats to #AoIR2017 organizers!
by Michael T Zimmer 02 Nov '17

02 Nov '17

As I’ve now had time to digest and recover from #AoIR2017 in Tartu, I wanted to send my sincere thanks to the hosts, organizers, and everyone involved for an excellent conference. While I’ve only been to about a dozen AoIR conferences (and helped host one, and helped plan 6 others), this certainly was one of the best. Thank you, Andra Siibak, for your hosting and excellent program curation. And thank you, AoIR Association Coordinator Michelle Gardner, for everything that you do to help make the conference a success. And thank you, (outgoing) AoIR President Jennifer Stromer-Galley, for your leadership. And the entire AoIR Executive Committee, for your dedication to the Association. I’m really looking forward to #AoIR2018 in Montreal (no pressure, Andrew!) Call for the ICA 2018 Pre-Conference “Articulating Voice. The Expressivity and Performativity of Media Practices”
by Leif Kramp 02 Nov '17

02 Nov '17

Call for the ICA 2018 Pre-Conference “Articulating Voice. The Expressivity and Performativity of Media Practices” Sponsored by the Philosophy, Theory and Critique (PTC) Division of the International Communication Association Event date: 24 May 2018, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Prague, Czech Republic Venue: Main Conference Hotel Deadline for proposals: 10 January 2018 (300-500 words abstract) Organizers: Christian Pentzold (University of Bremen), Kenzie Burchell (University of Toronto), Olivier Driessens (University of Cambridge), Alice Mattoni (Scuola Normale Superiore), John Postill (RMIT University), Cara Wallis (Texas A&M University) “Media matter most when they seem not to matter at all.” (Wendy Chun) But how can we understand the practices through which innovations in media and digital data move from being unexpected, novel, and impactful to the negotiated, embedded, and habitual? The pre-conference takes issue with the mundane yet pervasive nature of media habits, rituals, and customs. It assesses the purchase of practice-based approaches in order to see under what conditions and with what consequences they enter studies in communication and media. In particular, we invite participants to consider the expressive and performative dimension of what people actually do and say in relation to media and to the wider communication ecologies in which these articulations take place. We are especially interested in contributions that examine how voices are expressed, represented, or muted and that study the ways practices of voice combine, overlap, or collide with other mediated activities in contemporary societies. With this, we strive for an explanation and critical appreciation of media practices whose accomplishment is a perennial exercise in which we find ourselves immersed. We welcome theoretical and/or empirical contributions on questions including: ● How can we theorize and study the interplay between media-related practices and technologies, discourses, or institutions? How are these constellations created, maintained, and transformed? How do praxeological approaches correspond to other inquiries into speech acts, media rituals, or media habits? ● What resources and skills are mobilized in order to perform voices? What is the meaning of the work that goes into activities of voicing? How do they contribute to or undermine the constitution of public spheres, privacy, and civic life in past and contemporary societies? ● How do we grasp media practices empirically, and how do we analyze them across modes of expression, across cultures, different times, and ages? How can we challenge and advance the kinds of translation and transformation happening in-between the situated enactment of media practices and the descriptions and stories of scholarly accounts? ● How can we understand the ways through which media practices are accomplished in social fields? How are they deployed in struggles for gaining voice and visibility as in political communication and journalism, participation and mobilization, health communication, or science communication? How have media practices changed over time and in relation to innovations in digitization and datafication? Responses to the contributions will be given by Elisenda Ardèvol (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya); Maria Bakardjieva (University of Calgary), S. Elizabeth Bird (University of Southern Florida); Nick Couldry (London School of Economics and Political Science). Please email a 300-500 words proposal to Christian Pentzold (christian.pentzold(a)uni-bremen.de) by January 10, 2018. Authors will be notified of their acceptance before January 31, 2018. by Andrea Guzman 01 Nov '17

01 Nov '17

I am asking that you please distribute this information through your appropriate networks regarding Northern Illinois University's M.A. program in Communication Studies, which does provide full assistantships (stipends and tuition waivers) on a competitive basis. The M.A. in Communication Studies, part of the Department of Communication, provides students with the opportunity to focus their graduate work in the area of media studies (including film production), journalism, rhetorical studies, or interpersonal, organizational, and persuasive communication. The study of technology is an integral aspect of work across many of these areas. For example, both Dr. David Gunkel and I teach courses on emerging technology, including the study of artificial intelligence and robotics from a communication perspective. My course this spring, "Automating Media," explores the integration of AI into media industries with a specific focus on journalism within the context of the ongoing automation of media production and consumption. Northern Illinois University is located in DeKalb, IL, USA approximately 50 miles west of Chicago. Additional information is available on the department's website: http://www.comm.niu.edu/comm/academics/graduate/ Faculty advisors or students interested in the program are welcome to contact me or the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Kathleen Valde, kvalde(a)niu.edu. Thanks, Andrea _____ Andrea L. Guzman, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Dept. of Communication Northern Illinois University alguzman(a)niu.edu

Please share with other AOIR members: Understanding the Business of Global Media in the Digital Age By Micky Lee (Suffolk University) and Dal Yong Jin (Simon Fraser University) Routledge (2017) https://www.routledge.com/Understanding-the-Business-of-Global-Media-in-the… This new introductory textbook provides students with the tools they need to understand the way digital technologies have transformed the global media business of the 21st century. Focusing on three main approaches – media economics, critical political economy, and production studies – the authors provide an empirically rich analysis of ownership, organizational structures and culture, business strategies, markets, networks of strategic alliances, and state policies as they relate to global media. Examples throughout involve both traditional and digital media and are taken from different regions and countries to illustrate how the media business is influenced by interconnected historical, political, economic, and social factors. In addition to introducing today’s convergent world of global media, the book gives readers a greater understanding of their own potential roles within the global media industries.
