*Call for Papers: BIAS - Bias in Information, Algorithms, and Systems* *A half-day workshop at the 2018 iConference to be held in Sheffield, UK on Sunday, March 25, 2018* http://ir.shef.ac.uk/bias/ More than ever before, information, algorithms and systems have the potential to influence and shape our experiences and views. With increased access to digital media and the ubiquity of data and data-driven processes in all areas of life, an awareness and understanding of areas, such as algorithmic accountability, transparency, governance and bias, are becoming increasingly important. Recent cases in the news and media have highlighted the wider societal effects of data and algorithms requiring we pay it more attention. The BIAS workshop will bring together researchers from different disciplines who are interested in analysing and tackling bias within their discipline, arising from the data, algorithms and methods they use. The theme of the workshop, bias in information, algorithms, and systems, includes, but is not limited to, the following areas: - Bias in sources of data and information (e.g., datasets, data production, publications, visualisations, annotations, knowledge bases) - Bias in categorisation and representation schemes (e.g., vocabularies, standards, etc.) - Bias in algorithms (e.g., information retrieval, recommendation, classification, etc.) - Bias in the broader context of information and social systems (e.g., social media, search engines, social networks, crowdsourcing, etc.) - Considerations in evaluation (e.g., to identify and avoid bias, to create unbiased test and training collections, crowdsourcing, etc.) - Interactions between individuals, technologies and data/information - Considerations for data governance and policy The workshop aims to identify potential avenues for future directions around the notions of bias, algorithmic transparency and accountability, with the concrete goal of generating a collaborative proposal for publishing a position paper (e.g., in ACM SIGIR Forum) and/or the coordination of a special issue on BIAS for the journal Online Information Review. With these goals in mind, the workshop will feature a keynote talk, presentations and posters from workshop participants, and thematic discussions in small groups. === Submission and Publication === The workshop welcomes the following types of submissions: - Extended abstracts of up to 1,500 words, - Short research papers of up to 6 pages, and - Full research papers of up to 12 pages. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least two members of the programme committee. Submissions should be formatted according to Springer’s LNCS style guidelines (http://www.springer.com/gb/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-gui…) and not exceed the word/page limit. The submission is to be done via EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=bias2018) All accepted submissions will be published as workshop proceedings on CEUR-WS.org (http://ceur-ws.org/) Their metadata will also be provided in BibSonomy (https://www.bibsonomy.org/) and everything will be linked on the workshop homepage, together with the program and presentation slides. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the conference and present the paper there. === Important Dates === - Abstract submission deadline: Jan 10, 2018 - Submission deadline: Jan 20, 2018 - Notification of acceptance: Feb 25, 2018 - Camera-ready paper: Mar 10, 2018 (Abstract submission: Please submit the title and (short) abstract of your work until January 10 to speed up reviewer assignment.) === Organisation === - Dr. Jo Bates, Information School, University of Sheffield, UK - Prof. Paul Clough, Information School, University of Sheffield, UK - Prof. Robert Jäschke, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany - Prof. Jahna Otterbacher, Open University of Cyprus -- Prof. Dr. Robert Jäschke Humboldt University Berlin, University of Sheffield, L3S Research Center https://www.ibi.hu-berlin.de/de/institut/personen/jaeschke < World Literature: http://weltliteratur.net/ > < http://bibsonomy.org >

09 Nov '17

================================================================== SPeL 2018 11th International Workshop on Social and Personal Computing for Web-Supported Learning Communities http://software.ucv.ro/~epopescu/spel2018 In conjunction with MIS4TEL 2018 (8th International Conference in Methodologies and Intelligent Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning) https://www.mis4tel-conference.net 20-22 June 2018 Toledo, Spain * Paper submission deadline: February 5, 2018 (preceded by a mandatory abstract submission by January 29) * All accepted workshop papers will be published by Springer in Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing series. ================================================================== MOTIVATION =========== The workshop follows the previous SPeL 2008, SPeL 2009, SPeL 2010, SPeL 2011, DULP & SPeL 2012, SPeL 2013, SPeL 2014, SPeL 2015, SPeL 2016 and SPeL 2017 workshops, held in conjunction with the SAINT 2008 conference, WI/IAT 2009 conference, DEXA 2010 conference, ICWL 2011 conference, ICALT 2012 conference, ICSTCC 2013 conference, ICWL 2014 conference, ICSLE 2015 conference, ICWL & SETE 2016 conferences and ICWL & SETE 2017 conferences respectively. The general topic of the workshop is the social and personal computing for web-supported learning communities. Web-based learning is moving from centralized, institution-based systems to a decentralized and informal creation and sharing of knowledge. Social software (e.g., blogs, wikis, social bookmarking systems, media sharing services) is increasingly being used for e-learning purposes, helping to create novel learning experiences and knowledge. In the world of pervasive Internet, learners are also evolving: the so-called "digital natives" want to be in constant communication with their peers, they expect an individualized instruction and a personalized learning environment, which automatically adapt to their individual needs. The challenge in this context is to provide intelligent and adaptive support for collaborative learning, taking into consideration the individual differences between learners. This workshop deals with current research on the interplay between collaboration and personalization issues for supporting intelligent learning environments. Its aim is to provide a forum for discussing new trends and initiatives in this area, including research about the planning, development, application, and evaluation of intelligent learning environments, where people can learn together in a personalized way through social interaction with other learners. The workshop is targeted at academic researchers, developers, educationists and practitioners interested in innovative uses of social media and adaptation techniques for the advancement of intelligent learning environments. The proposed field is interdisciplinary and very dynamic, taking into account the recent advent of Web 2.0 and ubiquitous personalization, and it is hoped to attract a large audience. TOPICS OF INTEREST ================== The workshop welcomes submissions covering aspects of collaboration, social interactions, adaptivity and personalization in technology enhanced learning, particularly related to issues about: * Social learning environments * Theory and modeling of social computing in education * Web 2.0 tools for collaborative learning * Personal learning environments * Lifelong learning networks * Virtual spaces for learning communities * Social networks analysis and mining * Computer-supported collaborative learning * Personalized and adaptive learning * Adaptation methods and techniques for groups of learners * Intelligent learner and group modeling * Collaborative filtering and recommendations for learners * Game-based social learning * Personalized mobile learning applications * Cloud-based social learning * Intelligent agent technology for social learning * Metadata, folksonomies and tagging * Semantic web and ontologies for personalized learning * Cognitive, motivational and affective aspects for personalization * Practice and experience sharing PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION ================================== The workshop papers should be formatted according to the Springer LNCS Authors Guidelines (http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0) The length of the manuscript should be 4-6 pages for short papers and 8 pages for full papers. Call for papers: Intimacies online, online intimacies
by Katherine Harrison 09 Nov '17

09 Nov '17

Call for papers: Intimacies online, online intimacies We are delighted to announce this international conference about intimacy online, digitally mediated intimacies and how intimacies influence (new) mediascapes. Online media are increasingly intersecting and intertwined with our daily lives, bodily and intimate practices, and relationships. This conference highlights how different digital, social and online media enable and/or produce new intimacies, as well as how practices and understandings of intimacy are both embedded in digitally mediated communication and generate innovative uses or forms of new media. We invite papers (or other forms of expression) that explore various media sites and forms, including (but not limited to) social media, digital media, online media and mobile devices. And we invite papers investigating various intimacies, including but not limited to intimate and/or affective encounters, relationalities, practices, belongings, desires, proximities, kinships, friendships, or communities, as well as online and /or digital affective intensities, viralities, and connectivities. Papers discussing both methodological and empirical aspects are welcome. Papers analysing the bodily and intimate doing of technology, and papers questioning the boundaries between body, media, technology and affect are welcome. Also, papers discussing the commercialization and capitalization of intimacies online are of interest. In particular, we welcome papers analyzing the ways in which new mediated intimacies (re)produce, configure and/or challenge power relations and hierarchal structures in relation to: • Sexual cultures, dating and hook-up, sexualities, and sexual identities • Kinship and new (queer) families and reproduction • Bodies and bodily markers of difference • Migration, nation, borders, and surveillance • Activism, resistance, counter publics, and subcultures The confirmed keynotes include Prof. Jack Halberstam (University of Southern California and Columbia University, US), Dr. Debra Ferreday (Lancaster University), and Dr. Sharif Mowlabocus (University of Sussex). Digital communication textbook
by Luis Hestres 08 Nov '17

08 Nov '17

Hi everyone, I teach an 'Introduction to Digital Communication' sophomore course. I use a book called 'Communication Technology Update and Fundamentals' by Grant & Meadows. But I would like to use a new textbook that addresses the social, political, cultural and economic aspects of digital communication technologies. Can anyone recommend any? I would also appreciate syllabi that are similar to this course, as I'm trying to revamp mine. Thanks! Luis - - - - - Luis E.
