Internet Research Ethics 3.0: invitation to interviews

Dear AoIR-ists, copy to aline franzke, The AoIR guidelines for ethical decision-making (2002, 2012) are living documents that continue to prove useful to researchers and ethical review boards alike who confront the multiple ethical challenges that arise in internet-facilitated research. But novel developments, such as the increased complexity of datasets, questions of “grey data” and data from mixed sources (governmental, corporate, university-based), embedded metadata, along with many others, have occasioned the AoIR project of developing additional ethical guidelines and resources for internet research. So an Ethics Working Group was inaugurated following last year’s conference in Berlin; a first stage in our work will be two ethics roundtables this coming week in Tartu that highlight such contemporary ethical challenges and their possible resolutions, and dialogues with researchers facing similar challenges. At the same time, the Working Group wants to collect examples and develop case-studies of such contemporary ethics challenges. We hope that an effective way of doing so is to invite interested researchers to short, informal interviews (e.g., instead of asking for more formal and time-consuming written accounts). Specifically, we would be very grateful indeed to collect your personal views and opinions about challenges you see in data-driven research. With your permission, these opinions and views may be used to build paradigmatic case-studies that will help improve the guidelines, add some flesh, so to speak, and create a broader and more complete picture about what needs to be addressed in the new guidelines and resources. aline franzke is an ethics WG member who has developed considerable expertise in the area of data ethics. We are very fortunate indeed that aline serves this fall as a research assistant in the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, with specific focus on furthering the research and work of the WG. aline will be available in Tartu to interview researchers who wish to contribute their experiences and comments. The interview may take only a few minutes, but will be limited to 30 minutes. Interviews will be audio-recorded and then transcribed: the original interview recordings will be deleted. Interviewees may remain completely anonymous: it is not necessary to give your name, institution or position. Interview transcriptions will be used only for the purpose of building the body of case-studies. Interviewees may also request to review any potentially public use of the case-study prior to its distribution or publication; they may further ask for either additional steps to protect confidentiality and anonymity, or simply withdraw their permission for the case-study to be published in any way. While challenging and sometimes difficult to document in these ways, we know that it is only by making personal struggles with data research transparent to a certain degree will we be able to respond adequately in the new version of the AoIR guidelines. Invitation: dialogues on internet research ethics 3.0

Dear AoIRists, On behalf of the AoIR Ethics Working Group and our colleagues contributing to two ethics roundtables this coming week in Tartu - I'm very pleased to invite scholars and researchers to the roundtables to engage in dialogue on the specific ethical challenges in your work. This is to say: the roundtables are structured not only to provide important examples of and reflection on contemporary research ethics challenges - please see the panel titles and participants, below: as well, additional time (15 minutes) in each roundtable will be devoted to one-on-one (or one-on-several, depending on interest) discussion and reflection between each roundtable presenter and researchers / scholars who are confronting the same or very similar challenges. So, for example, you may be interested in - Stine Lomborg (University of Copenhagen). Open data repositories: what are the Stakes for users’ whose data are re-purposed? This includes discussions of data activism and citizenship in relation to open data. - not only for the sake of Stine's presentation and experience, but also because you would like to talk with her about closely similar issues you're facing in your own project. Following the initial presentations (35 / 40 minutes) and open Q&A (15 minutes), Stine as well as the other presenters will move into the room for specific conversations on such shared issues, concerns, etc. Our concluding plenary wrap-up (15 minutes) will bring the results of the conversations to the larger group for final comment and discussion. Our hope is thus not only to offer potentially helpful resources and example resolutions of contemporary ethical challenges - but also to gain from attendees a more complete understanding of the ethical concerns confronting the AoIR research communities. (All of which is part of our larger remit to identify topics, issues, etc. that have emerged over the past few years that are not addressed either fully or in part in the previous guidelines issued by AoIR, but that thereby require more contemporary attention, reflection, and possible resolution.) At the same time, it has been clear throughout the development of the first (2002) and second (2012) guidelines that such shared dialogue and reflection are critical to our work on IRE: alongside new resources and insights - such dialogues are essential to the kinds of careful reflection and trust requisite to our community-based, process-oriented approach to ethics. And especially as our research projects and ethical challenges implicate participants from multiple disciplines and cultures, we hope that these dialogues will also improve our understanding of how to create and inspire such safe places. Especially if you and/or your colleagues are confronting such pressing ethical concerns or issues in your research, we warmly invite you to attend the relevant roundtable(s) and participate in these dialogues. We are embarking on an exciting, challenging effort to reinvigorate how we teach FYW at Texas Tech. Already we teach almost 3,000 students a semester in introduction and advanced composition. We want to increase that number, but just as important, we want to improve the experience of the students enrolled in FYW, as well as those assigned to teach it as graduate teaching assistants. The successful candidate will contribute to our efforts to remake FYW, teaching 6 large-section (100-plus students per section with breakout sessions taught by TAs) FYW courses per year, as well as mentoring graduate student teaching assistants (TAs) assigned to support that teaching. Texas Tech University is designated as a Carnegie Tier One (Highest Research Activity) institution. It has a law school, a medical school, and colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, Architecture, Business Administration, Engineering, Human Sciences, Media and Communication, and Visual and Performing Arts. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest of these, representing 28% of the total enrollment of 35,000. The university is located in Lubbock, a rapidly growing city of more than 300,000 on the high plains. Lubbock enjoys 260 days of sunshine every year. Description: The Incentive Auction is the most complex spectrum auction ever conducted It successively cleared 84 MHz of TV spectrum and re-allocated 70 MHz for mobile services. However, it also took approximately 4 years to design and bidding last 1 year and 1 day. Repacking of the cleared spectrum will take over 39 months before the spectrum will become fully available for the winning bidders. On the TV side, single entities owned multiple stations in many markets. In addition, the pricing algorithm left many anomalies. On the buy side, only one of the four national mobile operators entered any bids after the first stage, and only of the two smaller operators, with limited low-band holdings ex ante was successful in closing the gap with the stronger rivals. This conference addresses how well the auction achieved its policy goals. What may be improved? Should the FCC or other countries try to run two sided auctions again to clear spectrum for re-purposing.
