Christopher Clifton, Perdue University ? Lorrie Cranor, Carnegie Mellon University, Director CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory ? Lauri Kanerva, Facebook, Research Management Lead ? Helen Nissenbaum, Cornell Tech and New York University ? Jules Polonetsky, Future of Privacy Forum, Chief Executive Officer Overview As more human interactions move online and the amount and variety of information shared digitally continues to grow, decisions regarding the collection, sharing, and use of this data must take into account both ethical and privacy considerations. It is important that industry and academia come together to find joint solutions for making these difficult decisions regarding privacy and ethics to maximize the benefits of data-driven research and practices, while ensuring that harms and negative outcomes are prevented. To bridge communication between these communities, we are organizing a workshop for thought leaders from academia, industry and civil society to identify common goals, establish a long-term vision, and initiate working teams for tangible projects focused on responsible research ethics and privacy practices around user data. The workshop will kick-off with a keynote from Facebook?s Deputy Chief Privacy Officer, Rob Sherman, and a panel discussion from our advisory b oard mem bers. Workshop Themes 1. Data Analytics and Privacy-Preserving Technologies. How should organizations decide which data uses and applications are fair and appropriate? What are the strengths and limitations of privacy-preserving techniques, such as differential privacy and obfuscation, to remove sensitive information or add uncertainty to a dataset before it is released, or before further services are developed with data? In what contexts have privacy preserving technologies been deployed to unlock new types of data analysis while guaranteeing meaningful protection of privacy? 2. Privacy and Ethics in User Research. Data-driven research conducted to understand people?s behavior online raises questions about the types of research practices and techniques that should be used to respect privacy (e.g. around de-identification and re-identification of individuals through data-mining, linking, merging and re-using of large datasets). How might ethical considerations guide new data collection and use practices so that they respect privacy and promote societal benefits for all? 3. People-Centered Privacy Design. The privacy landscape has for too long been dominated by long policy statements and formal consent processes. By leveraging design thinking, there is an opportunity to raise the bar and reorient our approach to privacy in a way that puts people at the center. How can organizations use design thinking to provide people better visibility and control over their data? And how can a more people-focused approach enable us to reorient toward a modern, innovative approach to privacy? Workshop Goals Initiatives in each of these areas continues to gain considerable momentum, making it the opportune time to identify promising avenues for forming new academic and private sector collaborations. Toward this end, the goals for this workshop are to: 1. Convene experts in each of the three focus areas to highlight recent advances and integrate different perspectives from the various communities. 2. Foster new collaborations and start working together to forge meaningful progress in these areas by creating working groups. At the workshop, we will develop concrete project proposals and solidify new partnerships across disciplinary lines by drafting goal-specific research or design proposals. The teams will pursue these projects after the conclusion of the workshop. The outcomes of this inaugural meeting will be sustained through future workshops that will be co-created by our growing community ? if you attend this workshop, you will be expected to collaborate with your working group and return to the next workshop (in about a year) to present group outcomes. Call for Participation Our intent is to bring together experts from different fields who are engaging in research or initiatives in the themed areas outlined above. To encourage a diverse set of attendees, we ask those who are interested to provide their resume or CV and a 1 to 2-page submission that includes the following information (no specific format required): ? Biosketch. A one to two paragraph biosketch that provides an introduction to who you are and your background. Clearly articulate whether you come from industry, academia, or civil society. ? Project Theme. A description of your planned or existing research projects that aligns with one of the three themes. Clearly indicate the progress you have made, lessons learned, as well as the contribution of the work to the field. ? Influence. A statement on how you would be influential within your respective community in disseminating the workshop outcomes after the conclusion of the workshop. Please send submissions to rcn(a)fpf.org<mailto:rcn@fpf.org>. Submissions are due September 22nd, 2017, 11:59PM EST. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by the workshop program committee and will be accepted based on selection criteria that ensures a diverse set of attendees who are able to work together on the relevant workshop themes and goals. Limited travel funding will be available to workshop participants based on need. Fully-funded PhD studentships for ERC project DATAJUSTICE
by Lina Dencik 12 Sep '17

12 Sep '17

Dear all - the below may be of interest to you or someone you know. 2 fully-funded PhD studentships to work on the ERC Starting Grant DATAJUSTICE at Cardiff's School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies. Candidates will be part of the recently established Data Justice Lab (a further post-doc position in computer science and a post-doc position focused on law/policy will be advertised soon). The project DATAJUSTICE explores the meaning of social justice in an age of datafication. It is premised on two significant developments: 1. the shift to a focus on the collection and processing of massive amounts of data across social life 2. the increasing concern with the societal implications of such processes. Whilst initial concern with the technical ability to ‘datafy’ and collect information on ever-more social activity focused on surveillance and privacy, increasing emphasis is being placed on the fact that data processes are not ‘flat’ and do not implicate everyone in the same way, but, rather, are part of a system of ‘social sorting’, creating new categories of citizens, and premised on an emerging order of ‘have’ and ‘have nots’ between data profilers and data subjects. In such a context, questions of social justice and datafication require detailed study. This project frames this research agenda around the notion of ‘data justice’. The project will focus on developments in Europe and will combine the study of technical systems with the study of practices, experiences and policy frameworks in different contexts. It is principally concerned with examining the impacts of datafication on marginalized communities and implications for social and economic rights. Projects should particularly engage with developments in Europe concerning data systems and algorithmic decision-making in relation to one or a combination of the following areas: * governance of refugees and migrants * hiring and management of low-wage work * discrimination in law enforcement and policing. European Research Council (ERC)<https://erc.europa.eu/> studentships are highly competitive. You should hold a 1st or strong upper 2nd class Master’s or equivalent degree in one of the following disciplines: sociology, media and communication, politics, international relations, development studies, criminology, industrial relations or related disciplines. Experience working with social justice issues and marginalized communities will also be considered, and applicants with such backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. Deadline for applications: October 20th, 2017 Interview date: November 8th, 2017 Start date: February 1st, 2018 Apply here: https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/funding-and-fees/view/erc-phd-… For queries, please contact the Principal Investigator, Dr Lina Dencik (DencikL(a)cardiff.ac.uk) -- Dr Lina Dencik Senior Lecturer / Director MA Journalism, Media and Communication Co-Director, Data Justice Lab School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, Cardiff University Bute Building, King Edward VII Avenue, Cardiff CF10 3NB Email: DencikL(a)cardiff.ac.uk<mailto:DencikL@cardiff.ac.uk>, Tel: +44 (0)29 208 75461 Twitter: @LinaDencik Fellow, Center for Media, Data and Society, Central European University -------------------------------------------------------- MeCCSA mailing list -------------------------------------------------------- To manage your subscription or unsubscribe from the MECCSA list, please visit: https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?SUBED1=MECCSA&A=1 ------------------------------------------------------- MeCCSA is the subject association for the field of media, communication and cultural studies in UK Higher Education. Horst (The University of Sydney, Australia), Jolynna Sinanan (RMIT University, Australia) and Larissa Hjorth (RMIT University, Australia) Abstract Submission Deadline: 15 November 2017 Proposal Selection Notification: 10 December 2017 Initial Article Submission Deadline: 01 March 2017 Contact email: storingandsharing(a)gmail.com<mailto:storingandsharing@gmail.com> Technologies and technological infrastructures are often associated with social and economic change. Airplanes and the shipping containers (Levinson 2008) became mechanisms for the spread of globalisation, reshaping the production processes and the trade and consumption of goods from around the globe. Undersea cables and mobile phone towers are often associated with providing the infrastructure of the digital age, enabling the flow of information, communication, media, technology, commerce and other goods to move at a greater speed than experienced in previous eras. These possibilities continue to expand with the introduction of solid state drives, Bluetooth capabilities, smartphones, ‘the cloud’ and social media platforms that have fundamentally altered the practices of storing, sharing and circulating digital materials. Yet, the increasing capabilities for sharing and storing also have consequences for the ways in which we engage with and/or manage our digital data on a day-to-day basis. Research on digital materials in the home highlight how families and households now grapple with an increasing number of digital photographs, videos and other digital materials that are often stored on a range of outdated or defunct devices, formats and platforms. Memory size in domestic technologies has increased, but so have the number and size of files that host many of the mundane digital materials. These constraints prompt decisions about what digital material should remain, what can be deleted and where certain digital materials should be stored. Such decisions become even more difficult with the increasing infiltration of work into the domestic sphere, syncing and other forms of automation and the increasing number of channels through which digital materials can circulate. For many people the separation of digital materials that move between different domains has become more challenging - and messier - than ever. This special issue examines our everyday relationships with digital materials and the various platforms, devices, spaces and formats through which they are stored and shared. We ask contributors to this special issue to consider: How do people manage the proliferation of digital material in their everyday lives? What strategies and rituals do they develop to organize, curate or delete digital materials? How are existing cultural practices of sharing and storing in other domains shaping these strategies? What are the broader infrastructures, platforms, programs and devices that are enabling, hindering or changing people’s ability to navigate the ways they store and share digital materials? Papers in this special issue will explore the everyday ways we manage living in a world of digital data and may include the following topics: • Data transfer practices (e.g. moving digital materials from old to new devices) • Manual vs automatic syncing of digital materials • Temporalities of digital materials (e.g. long-term storage vs. transient data storage, changes of storing and sharing practices in relation to life stage) • Routines and practices (e.g. organising, cleaning or curating digital materials) • Non-sharing • Emergent categories of and distinctions between digital materials • Historical comparisons of sharing and storing of non-digital and digital materials • Specific studies of sharing or storing on or across specific platforms (e.g. WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Dropbox, iCloud, c-Share, Google Drive, etc.) Please note that the guest editors’ welcome submissions on a wide variety of theoretical and/or empirical contributions to the study of digital material beyond the suggestions identified. Submissions: Proposals should include the author's name and affiliation, title, an abstract of 250-300 words, and 3 to 5 keywords, and should be sent to the e-mail address no later than 15 November 2017: storingandsharing(a)gmail.com<mailto:storingandsharing@gmail.com> Invited paper submissions will be due 1 March 2018 and will be submitted directly to the submission site for /New Media and Society/: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/nms where they will undergo peer review following the usual procedures of New Media & Society. Approximately 10-12 papers will be sent out for full review. All other papers will be returned to their authors for submission elsewhere. Therefore, the invitation to submit a full article does not guarantee acceptance into the special issue. The special issue will be published in 2019. Request for literature on feedback/response on Twitter
by Bret Staudt Willet 11 Sep '17

11 Sep '17

Hi AoIR! This is my first time posting to this excellent listserv, and I'm grateful in advance for your help. I'm gearing up for my doctoral practicum this fall, looking at how educators connect and interact on Twitter. I'm focusing on how Twitter users experience engagement with their tweets. I'm thinking engagement can potentially be experienced as a feedback loop (like classroom clickers in educational research a few years back) or as a conversational response (as suggested in this interesting Twitter thread <https://twitter.com/leahbobet/status/902590526582607872>). If you know of any scholarly articles or work being done in the area of feedback/response on social media, especially Twitter, would you send my way? Again, thank you in this specific instance, but also thank you for the many ways I've already learned from this community in the past year. //Bret Bret Staudt Willet PhD Student, Michigan State University, Educational Psychology and Educational Technology http://bretsw.com - 717.575.2867 (cell) - @bretsw (Twitter)

After multiple years as a workshop, there’s a new conference emerging on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency. And there’s a social science/law/policy track (which I’m co-chairing). Like more CS-oriented conferences, this is a paper-oriented conference, but you have the option of making the paper archival or non-archival (the latter being key for submitting your paper to journals). Let me know if you have any questions! danah (danah(a)datasociety.net <mailto:danah@datasociety.net>) ----------------------------- Announcing a new Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAT*) fatconference.org <http://fatconference.org/> Paper registration deadline: Sept 29th Paper submission deadline: Oct 6th Conference: Feb 23 and 24th at NYU, NYC FAT* is an international and interdisciplinary peer-reviewed conference that seeks to publish and present work examining the fairness, accountability, and transparency of algorithmic systems. ICA Communication History Division. Call for papers for 2018 conference in Prague.
by Park, David 11 Sep '17

11 Sep '17

My dear colleagues: I contact you today to encourage you to submit your work to the ICA Communication History Division for the 2018 ICA conference in Prague, which will run from May 24-28 of 2018. Many of us are pursuing historical projects concerning new media, and I strongly believe that the Communication History Division would be a fine home for this kind of work. If you have any questions about the relevance of the communication history division to your own project, please do get in touch (park(a)lakeforest.edu) See below the call for papers for the ICA communication history division. Thank you, For Nicole Maurantonio (vice-chair) & Josh Lauer (secretary), Dave Park, chair of the ICA Communication History Division ICA COMMUNICATION HISTORY DIVISION The Communication History Division is dedicated to providing a base for the historical study of communication. Communication scholars from across the field and at different stages in their respective work should feel encouraged to submit scholarship to our division. We emphasize four key areas of scholarship: 1. The history of media and communication: this involves research concerning issues in the development of communication and media as critical facets of social, cultural, and political-economic life. Research generally classified as media history is a major component of this area. Much of the historical work in the field of communication addresses this set of issues; 2. The history of communication study: much as other social sciences (including psychology, sociology, anthropology, and economics) have subfields addressing their own intellectual histories, the history of the study of communication allows us to engage in a reflexive dialogue concerning the strengths and weaknesses of the institution of communication studies; and 3. The history of the idea of communication: scholars who address this issue take on one of the fundamental tasks of understanding how communication has been conceptualized, as well as how and why these conceptualizations have changed over time. 4. Memory studies: memory scholars frequently attend to communicative processes as they relate to the construction of social memory. This makes memory scholarship an important component of communication history. More details about the Communication History Division are available at our website: http://www.communicationhistory.org. Conference proposals: We welcome papers, panels, roundtables and poster presentations on topics that relate to these broad areas of historical inquiry. The division reminds potential contributors that `history’ is linked to numerous methodological and theoretical approaches to scholarship, and encourages submitted to think broadly about history. The Communication History Division accepts the following kinds of submissions, all of which should represent previously unpublished research: 1. Full papers: In accordance with ICA guidelines, these should be no longer than 8,000 words (25 pages) in length, plus tables, images, appendices, and references. Papers should be in12-point type, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins and with all identifying marks removed. 2. Panel sessions: Preconstituted panel proposals should include: • a 400-word rationale for the panel • a 200-350 word abstract for each of the papers on the panel • complete contact information for each panelist (Note: panel proposals should include the names and affiliations of all participants) • official panel listing as it would appear in the program • a 75-word description of the panel for the conference program Preference will be given to preconstituted panel submissions that include at least one graduate student presenting her or his work. 3. Roundtable submissions: Roundtables are intended to provide for a larger number of participants than the other sessions. Each participant offers a relatively short presentation. Roundtables are expected to foster interaction among presenters, and between presenters and audience members. Roundtable proposals should include: • a 400-word rationale for the roundtable • a 100-150 word abstract for each roundtable participant’s presentation • complete contact information for each participant (Note: roundtable proposals should include the names and affiliations of all participants) • official roundtable listing as it would appear in the program • a 75-word description of the panel for the conference program Preference will be given to preconstituted roundtable submissions that include at least one graduate student presenting her or his work. 4. Interactive poster presentations: Papers intended for the interactive poster presentation should be submitted in full paper (up to 8,000 words) format. Submitters of papers that are particularly well suited to be visual/interactive format of the poster session are highly encouraged to indicate this in their submission. ALL proposals submitted to CHD should indicate whether submitters are willing to have their papers/panels included in the Division’s interactive poster session for the 2018 conference. Please note that, in addition to scheduling conventional panel and paper sessions, the division may also offer an extended session, in which the presenters and audience have additional time to discuss the topics and themes involved. If you have any queries about submitting a proposal to CHD, please contact Dave Park (park(a)lakeforest.edu) Authors should submit papers and panel proposals to the Communication History Division online at the ICA website no later than November 1, 2017 at 16:00 UTC. Early submission is strongly recommended to avoid any technical glitches. Please follow the ICA instructions on submission carefully: to reach the conference website, go to the ICA home page at http://www.icahdq.org and follow the link for 2018 Conference Submission. ICA will send acceptance/rejection notices to submitters by mid-January 2018. Top Papers and Travel Awards Top papers will receive recognition awards at the group’s business meeting. The top two student papers will be awarded travel funding awards. To be eligible, student authors must indicate their status: please identify your paper as a student paper when submitting it through the ICA submission system, and not within the body of the paper itself. Papers jointly authored by faculty and students are not eligible for the student awards. The division will offer student travel awards based on ranking and financial need. To be considered for any award, the author must be a member of the Communication History Division. Reviewing Please volunteer to review for the Communication History Division: We encourage all faculty and graduate students with advanced knowledge about some aspect of communication history to volunteer to review submissions. Those who submit papers are still eligible to review. In fact, we encourage them to do so. We will do our best to match the three or four papers you are asked to review to your own research interests. The Division is very grateful to all who serve as reviewers for the annual conference. Please remember to volunteer on the ICA website, or email Dave Park directly (park(a)lakeforest.edu)

Dear Colleagues, Apologies for crossposting. Since 1999, I have maintained a collection of web pages that provides links to useful resources for people on the academic job market in communication studies, though others in critical humanities fields may find the materials useful as well. Over the year years, I have added material on other aspects of professional life and will continue to do so. You can find it at: http://sterneworks.org/Academe New this year: money advice for new scholars, the importance of revision in writing, how and why to avoid academia.edu, dealing with the continued over-citation of men (yes, like me), and more! I am always looking for good suggestions for material to add to the site, and as you'll see, I have used it to archive some material that has been circulated in other fora. If you have a suggestion for a link or a document worth archiving, or a correction to a typo or missing or expired link, please email me at jonathan.sterne(a)mcgill.ca<mailto:jonathan.sterne@mcgill.ca>. Please note that I do not post or keep track of job ads, nor am I interested in promoting commercial services or people's professional websites. This is purely for material that’s free and that I judge to be truly helpful for my intended audience. I intend to continue building the site, so suggestions for other areas to cover would be appreciated. Thanks for reading and feel free to share the link.
