For the last decade, UT Austin¹s Moody College of Communication has actively pursued diverse scholarly and creative initiatives related to interactive media and immersive media, which have led to continuous innovations in many of its programs including film and media production, journalism, advertising, organizational communication and technology, and health communication. By leveraging the College¹s existing expertise in interactive design and media, immersive media technology (including virtual and augmented reality), 3D production, experiential storytelling, and social science research, and by partnering with programs and faculty throughout campus, CIIMwill aim to transform both pedagogy and practice, creating new and innovative applications of next generation immersive technologies through interdisciplinary collaboration. Reporting directly to Dean Jay Bernhardt of the Moody College of Communication, the new Director will be charged with providing an innovative and inclusive vision for CIIM as a shared strategic resource for interactive and immersive media partners, both on and off campus. CIIM will provide a world class interdisciplinary research infrastructure, bringing together scholars, practitioners, production professionals, and students in support of collaborative research efforts from a wide array of disciplines across UT Austin¹s campus, as well with industry and the federal government through partnerships forged by shared interests and projects. The Director will be responsible for elevating the center¹s presence on campus, making CIIM a natural partner for many researchers and creative professionals, leading to increased extramural research support. The new Director will have an academic appointment as a tenured Associate or Full Professor in one or more of Moody College¹s academic units most relevant to his/her area of area of research/expertise. *Studies in Russian, Eurasian, and Central-European New Media *( www.digitalicons.org) invites submissions for its upcoming special issue *'Women and Tech in the Post-Soviet Context: Intelligence, Creativity, Transgression'* Guest editors: Saara Ratilainen (University of Helsinki), Mariëlle Wijermars (University of Helsinki) and Justin Wilmes (East Carolina University) The development of the internet as a democratizing tool fostering freedom of information, grass-roots activism, and peer-to-peer support is closely related to and engrained in hacker communities. In the early days of the internet’s development, these groups consisted primarily of young white men from with access to higher education and technology. In popular culture, the image of the successful programmer, software developer and ‘hacktivist’ remains predominantly male and is based on such well-known examples as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Edward Snowden, and Pavel Durov. Meanwhile, there are few if any stories or representations of women who have led the hacker revolution. As access to computer-programming-based technology becomes democratized on the user-end, gender (and other) inequalities on the developer side continue to persist with women drastically underrepresented in tech professions. These representations contradict what we know from history, including the fact that there are several women who have led crucial advancements in math and computing. Ada Lovelace, Victorian mathematician and daughter of Lord Byron, was notably the inventor of algorithms. She introduced the ‘calculating machine’ one hundred years before the existence of modern computers. Another pioneering female computer scientist and feminist figure, Joan Clarke, worked as a cryptanalyst in the British Government’s Code and Cypher School with the task of decrypting the German Enigma machine code during World War II. Clarke’s work was brought to the attention of international film audiences by *The Imitation Game *in 2014 and biographies of Lovelace are being published in different languages. Despite some renewed interest, we still know far too little about women’s work in computing, internet activism, and technology industries in general. *Studies in Russian, Eurasian, and Central-European New Media *( www.digitalicons.org) invites submissions that address women, feminism, and the internet in post-socialist contexts to be published in a special issue ‘Women and Tech in the post-Soviet Context: Intelligence, Creativity, Transgression’. The issue aims to consider what is it like to be a female programmer, online activist, or digital artist in the era of global connectedness through the internet. According to a study conducted by HackerRank (blog.hackerrank.com) of the ten nations with the best women coders three are Eastern European/post-socialist countries, which prompts the question whether female programmers are better off in post-socialist countries than they are in Silicon Valley? Against this background, the issue also seeks to examine feminist activism and women’s creative work online. Did Pussy Riot pave the way for transnational feminism to grow through online communications? What is the role of internet-based ‘cyber feminism’ (feminist theorizing, critiquing and exploiting the internet and new media technologies) ) for the grass-roots work of women’s groups across the post-socialist space and beyond? How do women artists, writers, and poets advance their careers through online networks and computer programming? Call for Chapters: Book 3 of Learning, Education & Games (LEG) - 100 Games to Use in the Classroom and Beyond

Hi all, I am excited to announce a call for chapters for the third book in the Learning, Education & Games series, published by ETC Press: Learning, Education, & Games Volume 3: 100 Games to Use in the Classroom and Beyond Editor: Karen Schrier Quick summary: For the third volume, we aim to create a guide for educators who want to use games, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in the classroom (or in other educational contexts, such as libraries, homeschool environments, afterschool, or camps). This guide will include case studies of 100 games/interactive experiences that could be used for education (including K-12, preschool, and higher education). In each case study, we will explore how real educators have used the game – what they learned, their tips and techniques, and what worked and didn’t work. Each case study will be approximately 1000 words (or fewer). Who we are looking for: Previous case study authors/Revisers: For those authors who wrote case studies in books 1 and 2—we invite you to reshape your work into a case study for book 3! New Authors: We need some authors who can write brand new case studies and can either interview educators, work with educators, and/or write about their own use of games in the classroom. Educators: We need educators who have used games in their classrooms and can either write case studies, be interviewed by authors and offer examples of how they use games, and/or who can collaborate with authors to explore how they use these games in their classrooms. About the LEG Book Series: The Learning, Education & Games SIG (part of the IGDA – International Game Developers Association) created a series of books on games and learning with ETC Press called Learning, Education & Games. The first volume in the series focused on the design and curricular considerations related to creating and using games for learning, such as designing for diverse audiences or designing for social studies, STEM, or music learning. The book also delves into specific design issues, such as aligning goals, designing for an audience, playtesting, and assessment. Check it out: http://press.etc.cmu.edu/content/learning-education-and-games-volume-one-cu… The second volume focused on the challenges of creating games and implementing them in educational settings, and covered issues such as gamification, using games to support ASD (autism spectrum disorder) students, selecting games for the classroom and library, homeschooling and gameschooling, working with parents and policymakers, and choosing the right tools for game development. For instance, we had short case studies on games such as Quandary, Minecraft, Civilization, and Foldit. Each chapter had approximately three case studies of games in it, and each were approximately 500-750 words. What is LEG? The Learning, Education and Games (LEG) SIG is a community of game developers, designers, educators, policy-makers, researchers, and entrepreneurs interested in the intersection of learning and games. This could include issues related to the design, development, distribution, promotion, use, and assessment of games in both formal and informal learning contexts; as well as both commercial off-the-shelf games and games made primarily for educational purposes. LEG is affiliated with the International Game Developers Association as a recognized Special Interest Group. LEG “officially” meets annually at the Game Developers Conference. Otherwise, LEG hosts monthly virtual meetings via Slack. LEG’s mission: - Grow and sustain a robust community of developers, educators, policymakers, and researchers, through a series of virtual and in-person meetings, workshops, online dialogues, and other shared activities. - Serve as thought leaders and advocates for the intersection of games and learning, both in classrooms and other contexts (healthcare facilities, after school programs, not-for-profits, corporate sector, government, military), such as through new collaborative projects and grants, or through the use and promotion of our ETC Press series of Learning, Education, and Games books. - Create, promote, and share resources related to the design and use of games for learning, such as standards and guidelines, case studies, models and exemplars, and an online database.
