communication +1 CFP - Intersectionalities and Media Archaeologies
by Zach McDowell 20 Sep '17

20 Sep '17

(apologies for cross-posting) communication +1 is seeking proposals for Volume 7, "Intersectionalities and Media Archaeologies" Edited by Zachary McDowell and Nathanael Bassett The emerging field of media archaeology has opened up new avenues of research across fields and provided a way to challenge accepted historical layers of social and technical arrangements. Drawing from a variety of entangled theories and methodologies, bringing in German media theory, new materialism, digital humanities, software studies, cultural studies, Foucauldian frameworks, and others, media archaeology interrogates dead media, alternative technological schema, the composition of infrastructures, everyday objects, and other phenomena, providing new insights and recontextualization for scholars from an array of backgrounds. However, despite the interconnected promise of Media Archaeology, the practices and theories remain limited in their engagement with much of critical cultural communication and media studies. In the introduction to “What is Media Archaeology,” Jussi Parikka notes that “we need to be prepared to refresh media archaeology itself.” This collection seeks essays by critical scholars of communication participating in this ongoing emergence of media archaeology as method or theorization to study mediums, objects, conjunctures, and other areas of interest to the study of communication. This collection is meant to highlight and connect ways to theorize and “refresh” the concepts related to media archaeology in connection with the study of communication. We encourage intersectional engagements with and applications of media archaeological practices as they function theoretically, methodologically, spatially, institutionally, and in relation to the study of communication. With this collection we hope to help provide communication researchers a space in which to explore the promise of media archaeology as a critical set of lenses in the study of communication. Please submit short proposals of no more than 500 words by December 3rd, 2017 to communicationplusone(a)gmail.com. Upon invitation, full text submissions will be due April 1st, 2017, with expected publication in September, 2018. About the Journal The aim of communication +1 is to promote new approaches to and open new horizons in the study of communication from an interdisciplinary perspective. We are particularly committed to promoting research that seeks to constitute new areas of inquiry and to explore new frontiers of theoretical activities linking the study of communication to both established and emerging research programs in the humanities, social sciences, and arts. Other than the commitment to rigorous scholarship, communication +1 sets no specific agenda. Its primary objective is to create is a space for thoughtful experiments and for communicating these experiments. Editors Briankle G. Chang, University of Massachusetts Amherst Zachary J. HASTAC Scholars Applications are Due October 15
by Kalle Westerling 20 Sep '17

20 Sep '17

** Sorry for cross-posting ** HASTAC Scholars Applications are Due October 15 Now is the time to apply for HASTAC Scholars, or encourage your students to apply! The application period closes on October 15. Please apply here or share this link with interested colleagues and students: http://bit.ly/apply-to-hastac-scholars. HASTAC Scholars is a student-centered network of Ph.D., Masters, and some undergraduate students who are interested in engaging the intersections of technology and learning. HASTAC Scholars apply this interest in varied ways, both in-person and online: by writing about their own work—their research questions; by amplifying amazing things happening on their respective campuses and regions; and by helping to develop online conversations, hosting local events, and representing HASTAC at other events. Scholars organize Twitter chats and host webinars to share tools, expertise, and resources. Taken together, these activities provide opportunities not only to share knowledge with others, but also to learn from peers about various technologies and tools, all while gaining expertise in particular skill sets, such as in conducting interviews, writing reviews, and participating in other intellectual, artistic, or community-based conversations. All graduate and undergraduate students are welcome to apply. Scholars who identify as members of historically underrepresented or marginalized groups are especially encouraged to apply, as are groups of students who are part of the same program. The application is not lengthy, and the program connects students with a valuable network of peers across the country. Starting last year, Scholars will be admitted for a two-year cycle. During their second year, Scholars are encouraged to take on greater leadership and peer mentoring roles. We think that this extended timeline will go a long way toward building peer mentorship structures and keeping consistent activity and energy on the site year-round. For anyone with questions, I will host an AMA (Ask Me Anything) about the application process<https://www.facebook.com/events/125513291510473/> this coming Monday at 12noon EDT via Twitter #HASTACScholars. Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions at scholars(a)hastac.org. All best, Kalle Westerling Director, HASTAC Scholars

19 Sep '17

Hello everyone - I’m writing to let you know about a faculty position in Interactive Media & Game Design at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica, NY. The details and link to the application forms are below, but I’d like to use this space to editorialize about a couple of things… - Our IMGD program is about a year old, and we have seen incredible response from students and the community. The growth enables us to hire faculty, and we anticipate that several positions will open up this year and in the coming years. - We’re building new facilities as we speak - classrooms, VR/AR lab, and proposals in the works for a Library of Play and more. And, next month we will cut the ribbon on new facilities for advanced manufacturing that includes a makerspace, 3D printers, and other related engineering facilities. - We’ve got an energetic and diverse group of faculty who have built the program, and funded research projects that include faculty from engineering, biology, game design, and more. - The search committee is currently reviewing applications, and will be moving quickly to invite applicants for phone interviews. So even though there is no deadline posted on the ad, I would encourage anyone interested to apply within the next couple of weeks, ideally no later than October 2. I’m the dean of the college where the program is located, and it’s difficult to contain my excitement about it :) I’d be happy to answer any questions, and please spread the word if you know colleagues who would be interested! https://sunypoly.interviewexchange.com/jobofferdetails.jsp?JOBID=82736 The Department of Communication and Humanities at SUNY Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Interactive Media & Game Design (IMGD) to start in August 2018. We also seek candidates with experience with video gamer culture and industry practices. We seek candidates with demonstrated commitments to supporting and cultivating diversity in the university and/or interactive media professional environments. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a robust research agenda, and to shape our new IMGD program and to help it grow into new, state-of-the-art facilities that will be available for the Fall 2018 semester.
