Dear all, Thanks to both Becky Hayes's, first for the question on social media definitions, and also for the article. This is something I am also working on and I would second the Fuchs recommendation as he goes through a number of competing definitions which is valuable. I would also recommend these two, as both have definitions of social media that challenge how we think of the social and also how we think of the media. For example, van Dijck argues social media are not actually social, they are connective and about automating social metrics. Humphrees helpfully suggests that social media does not necessarily need to be digital, which I found refreshing. - Jose van Dijck's Culture of Connectivity https://www.amazon.co.uk/Culture-Connectivity-Critical-History-Social/dp/01… - Ashlee Humphrees, Social Media: Enduring principles, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Social-Media-Principles-Ashlee-Humphreys/dp/019932… Hope this helps! CfP (reminder): Special issue 'Women and Tech in the Post-Soviet Context: Intelligence, Creativity, Transgression’, Studies in Russian, Eurasian, and Central-European New Media
by Mariëlle W. 25 Sep '17

25 Sep '17

Less than 3 weeks remain to submit your abstracts for our upcoming special issue. We look forward to receiving your proposals! *Studies in Russian, Eurasian, and Central-European New Media *( www.digitalicons.org) invites submissions for its upcoming special issue *'Women and Tech in the Post-Soviet Context: Intelligence, Creativity, Transgression'* Guest editors: Saara Ratilainen (University of Helsinki), Mariëlle Wijermars (University of Helsinki) and Justin Wilmes (East Carolina University) The development of the internet as a democratizing tool fostering freedom of information, grass-roots activism, and peer-to-peer support is closely related to and engrained in hacker communities. In the early days of the internet’s development, these groups consisted primarily of young white men with access to higher education and technology. In popular culture, the image of the successful programmer, software developer and ‘hacktivist’ remains predominantly male and is based on such well-known examples as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Edward Snowden, and Pavel Durov. Meanwhile, there are few if any stories or representations of women who have led the hacker revolution. As access to computer-programming-based technology becomes democratized on the user-end, gender (and other) inequalities on the developer side continue to persist with women drastically underrepresented in tech professions. These representations contradict what we know from history, including the fact that there are several women who have led crucial advancements in math and computing. Ada Lovelace, Victorian mathematician and daughter of Lord Byron, was notably the inventor of algorithms. She introduced the ‘calculating machine’ one hundred years before the existence of modern computers. Another pioneering female computer scientist and feminist figure, Joan Clarke, worked as a cryptanalyst in the British Government’s Code and Cypher School with the task of decrypting the German Enigma machine code during World War II. Clarke’s work was brought to the attention of international film audiences by *The Imitation Game *in 2014 and biographies of Lovelace are being published in different languages. Despite some renewed interest, we still know far too little about women’s work in computing, internet activism, and technology industries in general. *Studies in Russian, Eurasian, and Central European New Media *( www.digitalicons.org) invites submissions that address women, feminism, and the internet in post-socialist contexts to be published in a special issue ‘Women and Tech in the post-Soviet Context: Intelligence, Creativity, Transgression’. The issue aims to consider what is it like to be a female programmer, online activist, or digital artist in the era of global connectedness through the internet. According to a study conducted by HackerRank (blog.hackerrank.com) of the ten nations with the best women coders three are Eastern European/post-socialist countries, which prompts the question whether female programmers are better off in post-socialist countries than they are in Silicon Valley? Against this background, the issue also seeks to examine feminist activism and women’s creative work online. Did Pussy Riot pave the way for transnational feminism to grow through online communications? What is the role of internet-based ‘cyber feminism’ (feminist theorizing, critiquing and exploiting the internet and new media technologies) for the grass-roots work of women’s groups across the post-socialist space and beyond? How do women artists, writers, and poets advance their careers through online networks and computer programming? The proposed articles can include (but are not limited to) themes such as: - Female coders - Women in software developer communities - Gender representation of hacktivism - Women and artificial intelligence - Feminist groups online - Feminist internet sites - Female gamers/women in the gaming industry - Women’s online poetry and literature - Women in digital art - Female idols on Runet - Female pioneers of Runet - Women in the history of computing and internet in the post-socialist context Please send an abstract of 350 words and a short cv to the issue’s editors Saara Ratilainen (saara.ratilainen(a)helsinki.fi) Mariëlle Wijermars ( marielle.wijermars(a)helsinki.fi) and Justin Wilmes (wilmesj15(a)ecu.edu) by *15 October 2017*. * Deadline for abstracts: 15 October 2017 Notification of acceptance: 20 November 2017 Deadline for full articles: 31 January 2018

CFP: Sustaining Community Media
by Dr Andrew Ó Baoill 24 Sep '17

24 Sep '17

Colleagues, I am guest editing a special issue of the Journal of Alternative and Community Media (JoACM), with Dr Salvatore Scifo of Bournemouth University. Our topic is Sustaining Community Media: Challenges and Strategies. We are seeking short abstracts (100-150 words) by 15th November, with full texts of accepted articles due next March. Please see full text of call below. We would welcome your proposals and informal inquiries - projects engaging with questions of technology and techno-social systems will be welcome (amongst the other themes suggested below). Please circulate to others you think might be interested. Regards, Andrew -- Dr. Andrew Ó Baoill NUI Galway, Ireland andrew.obaoill(a)nuigalway.ie <mailto:andrew.obaoill@nuigalway.ie> Journal of Alternative and Community Media - Special Issue - Call for Papers Guest Editors: Andrew Ó Baoill, National University of Ireland, Ireland (andrew.obaoill(a)nuigalway.ie <mailto:andrew.obaoill@nuigalway.ie>) Salvatore Scifo, Bournemouth University, United Kingdom (sscifo(a)bournemouth.ac.uk <mailto:sscifo@bournemouth.ac.uk>) Sustaining Community Media: Challenges and Strategies Maintaining community media organisations requires ongoing attention to a number of factors. Radio and TV stations, as well as national and international community media organisations must consider funding, governance structures, changing political and economic conditions, while building, consolidating and extending relationships with their listening communities. The concept of sustainability has been widely used in the context of communication for development paradigms, as a lens for assessing the health and success of that sector. This special issue will provide an opportunity to reflect on questions of resilience and endurance as they arise in alternative, radical, oppositional, and community-grounded media, and to explore the various interdependent factors that can impact the ongoing stability and health of community media projects. Concurrently, the association of the term with questions of ecology prompts a reflective and ethical concern that extends beyond the immediate or parochial, and we expect papers that will, in a holistic fashion, explore the role and operation of the sector in the context of broader socio-political concerns. Community media have been the focus of an increasing amount of scholarly attention as they have grown in size, from social movement theorists, to political economists, to those focused on governance and organisational communication. As Atton and Hamilton (2008: 26)1 note in their analysis of the political economy of alternative journalism, the “general political-economic dilemma for any critical project is that it needs resources with which to work, but those crucial resources are present only in the very society that it seeks to change or dissolve.” This special issue will build on existing knowledge, together with exploration of contemporary case studies, to explore the numerous challenges faced by community media activists and organisations in nurturing long-term projects, and identify strategies and best practices for building a sustainable sector. Questions of sustainability have an immediate practical relevance to those working in the field of community communication - many projects that emerge from the context of short-term tactical media projects struggle with questions of funding and volunteer engagement as the focus of their horizon changes. Also, the workforce and paperwork required by some funding schemes might be a barrier to the search of medium and long-term support. Beyond this, we encourage submissions that tackle the ethical tensions that arise, for instance, for those looking to create media that is at once independent, critical, and financially stable. To what extent is it possible to have a media project that is both oppositional and institutionalised? What compromises or additional work is necessary? How to balance the possible conflict between aims of the stations and those of funding bodies? In challenging contributors to focus on the interplay of practical considerations of funding and resources, together with questions of mission, key commitments, and values, we expect to foster a constructive debate that has the potential to draw on a range of historical examples, as well as explore some distinctive issues arising in the contemporary context. In what ways do the lower barriers to entry for digital publishing support and challenge the development of enduring oppositional projects? With neoliberalism prompting the expansion of commercial logic into ever more areas of human activity, what are the pressures faced by projects grounded in an opposition to commodification and capitalism more broadly? 1 Atton, Chris, and James F. Hamilton. Alternative Journalism. London, Sage, 2008. Areas of focus might include the following, with projects that draw together a number of tensions in creative and challenging ways particularly welcome: Capital and recurrent funding; building revenue streams Regulatory challenges and solutions Governance and organisation Cooperation and health of the sector Localism and defining community Maintaining and refreshing relationships with communities Pragmatism versus idealism Abstracts due: 15 November 2017 Notification of acceptance: 1 December 2017 Publication: mid-to-late 2018 Submission Guidelines: Please send an electronic copy of your 100-150 word abstract via e-mail text to both Guest Editors, Andrew Ó Baoill (andrew.obaoill(a)nuigalway.ie <mailto:andrew.obaoill@nuigalway.ie>) and Salvatore Scifo (sscifo(a)bournemouth.ac.uk <mailto:sscifo@bournemouth.ac.uk>), by Wednesday, 15 November 2017. Authors will be informed about the acceptance (or not) of their proposal by Friday 1 December 2017 and will be expected to submit their full paper according to JOACM guidelines (see https://joacm.org/index.php/JOACM/pages/view/authors <https://joacm.org/index.php/JOACM/pages/view/authors>) by 15 March 2018. The issue is expected to be released in mid-to-late 2018.

Best Regards, Salvatore ----------------------------------- Journal of Alternative and Community Media SPECIAL ISSUE - CALL FOR PAPERS Guest Editors: Andrew Ó Baoill, National University of Ireland, Ireland ( andrew.obaoill(a)nuigalway.ie) Salvatore Scifo, Bournemouth University, United Kingdom ( sscifo(a)bournemouth.ac.uk) Sustaining Community Media: Challenges and Strategies Maintaining community media organisations requires ongoing attention to a number of factors. As Atton and Hamilton (2008: 26) note in their analysis of the political economy of alternative journalism, the “general political-economic dilemma for any critical project is that it needs resources with which to work, but those crucial resources are present only in the very society that it seeks to change or dissolve.” This special issue will build on existing knowledge, together with exploration of contemporary case studies, to explore the numerous challenges faced by community media activists and organisations in nurturing long-term projects, and identify strategies and best practices for building a sustainable sector. Areas of focus might include the following, with projects that draw together a number of tensions in creative and challenging ways particularly welcome: • Capital and recurrent funding; building revenue streams • Regulatory challenges and solutions • Governance and organisation • Cooperation and health of the sector • Localism and defining community • Maintaining and refreshing relationships with communities • Pragmatism versus idealism Abstracts due: 15 November 2017 Notification of acceptance: 1 December 2017 Publication: mid-to-late 2018 Submission Guidelines: Please send an electronic copy of your 100-150 word abstract via e-mail text to both Guest Editors, Andrew Ó Baoill (andrew.obaoill(a)nuigalway.ie) and Salvatore Scifo (sscifo(a)bournemouth.ac.uk) by Wednesday, 15 November 2017. Authors will be informed about the acceptance (or not) of their proposal by Friday 1 December 2017 and will be expected to submit their full paper according to JOACM guidelines (see https://joacm.org/index.php/JOACM/pages/view/authors) by 15 March 2018. The issue is expected to be released in mid-to-late 2018. We encourage you to circulate this email among your networks. -- --------------------------------------------------------------- Joly MacFie 218 565 9365 Skype:punkcast -------------------------------------------------------------- -
