Hello Rebecca, One definition of social media I found helpful was from Graham Meikle’s book: “networked database platforms that combine public with personal communication”. **Apologies for cross-posting** Hello, We are currently circulating a Call for Posts for Transmissions, a companion blog to Social Studies of Science. Founded in 2017, Transmissions disseminates ideas in motion, signals contentious and developing topics, and powers emerging STS dialogue and debate. The site works with the dynamism and flexibility of digital media to communicate, fuel, and circulate emerging, time-sensitive, and usefully inchoate material; a conduit for generating new questions, positions and tensions, and channeling them into longer-term research projects. We are currently accepting posts under ‘Dispatches’, which provide timely, topical discussions of STS issues: replies to recent publications, reactions to current events, or position pieces (less than 1000 words). Dispatches can cover any topic relating to STS. To view current and archived posts, please visit www.ssstransmissions.org<http://www.ssstransmissions.org/>. Final CFP: Platform Urbanism - AAG 2018, New Orleans, USA
by Scott Rodgers 28 Sep '17

28 Sep '17

Platform Urbanism Call for Papers/Panellists Association of American Geographers Conference 2018 New Orleans, USA, 10-14 April 2018 Organizers Susan Moore (University College London) Scott Rodgers (Birkbeck, University of London) Sponsors Digital Geographies Specialty Group Media and Communication Geography Specialty Group Urban Geography Speciality Group Outline Talk about ‘platforms’ is today all-pervasive: platform architecture, platform design, platform ecosystem, platform governance, platform markets, platform politics, platform thinking. But just what are platforms? And how might we understand their emergent urban geographies? As Tarleton Gillespie (2010) argues, the term ‘platform’ clearly does discursive work for commercial entities such as Facebook, Amazon, Uber, Airbnb and Google. It allows them to be variably (and often ambiguously) described and imagined: as technical platforms; platforms for expression; or platforms of entrepreneurial opportunity. Indeed, as emergent spaces, platforms – both commercial and nonprofit – entail so many ambitions, activities, services, exchanges, forums, infrastructures, and ordinary practices that conceptualizing their general dynamics is difficult, perhaps even pointless. Yet platforms do appear to have considerable implications, geographical as well as political. For Benjamin Bratton (2015), cloud-based platforms such as Facebook, Amazon and Google form a fundamental layer of what he calls planetary-scale computation, perhaps representing new forms of geopolitical sovereignty. This ‘sovereignty’ is, however, neither generalized nor homogeneous: in manifests in geographically uneven intensities and extents. This session invites original research and conceptual reflections that explore, debate and critique the notion of an emergent ‘platform urbanism’. Recently, Nick Srnicek (2016) deployed the phrase ‘platform capitalism’ to encapsulate his argument that platforms not only mark a new kind of firm, but a new way of making economies. Here – in a move similar to Henri Lefevbre’s (1970/2003) in The urban revolution – we suggest a speculative substitution of ‘urbanism’ for ‘capitalism’, placing an emphasis on the possibility of irreducible, co-generative dynamics between platforms and the urban. Contributions may address a wide range of commercial and nonprofit platforms – including those related to social networking, user-generated content, location-based technologies, mapping and the geoweb, goods and services, marketing, and gaming – and their relationships with various forms of urban living and urban spaces. Expressions of Interest We intend to organize 1-2 paper sessions, depending on quantity and quality of submissions, followed by a panel discussion session. Expressions of interest must be emailed to both Susan Moore (susan.moore(a)ucl.ac.uk<mailto:susan.moore@ucl.ac.uk>) and Scott Rodgers (s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk<mailto:s.rodgers@bbk.ac.uk>) by 1 October 2017. Those proposing a paper presentation should send an abstract of 250 words; those interested in participating as a panellist should include a short outline of their intended contribution in their email. Reminder: Starts TODAY: Live-streams of THE COMPUTER SAYS NO + HOW TO WATCH THEM WATCHING YOU (4pm EDT)
by Christian Sandvig 28 Sep '17

28 Sep '17

Dear AoIR colleagues, A reminder that the first event (of two) starts today at 4 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (UTC/GMT -4 hours). Hope to "see" you "there" via the question tool or on twitter! Feel free to forward. Best, Christian ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Christian Sandvig <csandvig(a)umich.edu> Date: Thu, Sep 21, 2017 at 6:38 PM Subject: Mark Your Calendar: Live-streams of THE COMPUTER SAYS NO + HOW TO WATCH THEM WATCHING YOU (9/28-9/29) To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Hello AoIR colleagues, We'll be hosting a workshop with some familiar AoIR people next week. I'm writing to this list because we will be live-streaming two of our public events on YouTube and I am wondering if you would like to "attend." We will be taking questions from the Internet via Twitter and the BKC question tool. Even if you are not in the right timezone, I hope this will be of interest. I dare Europe to stay awake for the first one, and Australians to stay awake for the second one. Live-Streamed Events: THE COMPUTER SAYS NO: The Bad News About Online Discrimination in Algorithmic Systems Thursday, September 28, 2017 4:00-5:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (UTC/GMT -4 hours) http://auditingalgorithms.science/?p=53 HOW TO WATCH THEM WATCHING YOU: Researching Social Media, Online Platforms, and Algorithmic Systems From the Outside Friday, September 29, 2017 10-11:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (UTC/GMT -4 hours) http://auditingalgorithms.science/?p=64 The overall occasion is a workshop entitled "Auditing Algorithms: Adding Accountability to Automated Authority," explained here: http://auditingalgorithms.science/ Its goal is a white paper about this area of research, which I expect to emailing this list about again in the future. We are also working on some weirder participatory online activities -- if you like these topics you'll want to jump on in on them. More on that after these events. For more context, here is a related quote: "The equations of big-data algorithms have permeated almost every aspect of our lives. A massive industry has grown up to comb and combine huge data sets — documenting, for example, Internet habits — to generate profiles of individuals. These often target advertising, but also inform decisions on credit, insurance and more. They help to control the news or adverts we see, and whether we get hired or fired. They can determine whether surveillance and law-enforcement agencies flag us as likely activists or dissidents — or potential security or criminal threats….Largely absent from the widespread use of such algorithms are the rules and safeguards that govern almost every other aspect of life in a democracy. There is an asymmetry in algorithmic power and accountability…Fortunately, a strong movement for greater algorithmic accountability is now under way. Researchers hope to find ways to audit for bias….Society needs to discuss in earnest how to rid software and machines of human bugs." –Unsigned Editorial, Nature (2016) Hope you'll be "there", Christian (on behalf of the co-organizers) -- http://www-personal.umich.edu/~csandvig/
