„The Mediatization of Time“ – ZeMKI International Conference 2017
by Leif Kramp 06 Oct '17

06 Oct '17

ZeMKI international conference „The Mediatization of Time“ December 6-8, 2017 Conference venue: Swissôtel Bremen Hillmannpl. 20, 28195 Bremen, Germany Organizer: University of Bremen, ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research http://www.zemki.uni-bremen.de Topic: Recent innovations in the digitalization and datafication of communication fundamentally affect how people conceptualize, perceive and evaluate time to create the kind of world they live in. The conference invites participants to think through the interplay of media and data in respect of the way social time is constructed, modulated, and experienced. This allows to appreciate how new technologies and representations deeply affect the temporal organization of today’s media suffused societies, and it also sheds light on transformations in mediating time. We assume that mediatization as a fundamental societal change that interweaves with the development and spread of communication and information technologies leaves its mark on the ways we process and order the pace, sequence, rhythms and of social reality. This conference invites to think through the role of media and data people have or had at hand to time their interactions, relations, and states of being. The conference is organized by Christian Pentzold and Christine Lohmeier from the ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research, University of Bremen in cooperation with Anne Kaun, School of Culture and Education, Södertörn University, Stockholm. Registration for non-presenting participants is open until November 30, 2017. New Book: “Internet Research Ethics for the Social Age: New Challenges, Cases, and Contexts”
by Michael T Zimmer 05 Oct '17

05 Oct '17

Dear AoIR colleagues, We are extremely happy to announce the publication of “Internet Research Ethics for the Social Age: New Challenges, Cases, and Contexts“, co-edited by Michael Zimmer (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and Katharina Kinder-Kurlanda (GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences), published in the Digital Formations series by Peter Lang. Peter Lang: https://www.peterlang.com/view/product/82023 Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Internet-Research-Ethics-Social-Age/dp/143314266X/ We were privileged to work with over 40 world-class contributors — many of whom are part of the AoIR community – and we couldn’t be happier with the results. From our introduction: > Our goal with "Internet Research Ethics for the Social Age: New Challenges, Cases, and Contexts" is to directly engage with these discussions and debates, and to help stimulate new ways to think about – and work towards resolving – the novel eth- ical dilemmas we face as internet and social media-based research continues to evolve. The chapters within this volume – which present novel ethical challenges, case studies, and emerging research contexts from a collection of global scholars and researchers – accomplishes this in three critical ways: > > First, as internet tools and social platforms continue to evolve at a rapid pace, Internet Research Ethics for the Social Age highlights new research contexts and case studies that introduce readers to unique uses – and related ethical concerns – of the current state-of-the-art technologies and platforms, including crowdsourcing on Amazon Mechanical Turk, the health sharing platform PatientsLikeMe, new forms of data visualization and facial recognition platforms, and automated tools for flagging potentially suicidal behavior online. > > Second, Internet Research Ethics for the Social Age recognizes the broad disci- plinary terrain impacted by internetbased research, and brings together discussions of ethical issues from the familiar domains of the social sciences (such as commu- nication studies, sociology, and psychology) alongside perspectives from computer science, data science, gender studies, museum studies, and philosophy. The result is a more inclusive umbrella of domains that can learn from each other and collab- orate to confront the challenges of internet research ethics. > > Third, Internet Research Ethics for the Social Age provides a global approach to the challenges of internet research ethics, bringing together contributions from researchers in diverse regulatory environments, as well as those dealing with the complex ethical dimensions of researching platforms and users in geographically diverse locations. Global regions and cultures represented within the volume include Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Asia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Join us for a roundtable session at AoIR2017 in Estonia where we will officially launch the book: https://www.conftool.com/aoir2017/index.php?page=browseSessions&form_sessio… We will have a few extra copies on hand for sale, and the proceeds will go toward the AoIR Conference Scholarship Fund. New Book: Theorizing Digital Divides
by Massimo Ragnedda 04 Oct '17

04 Oct '17

Apologies for cross posting *Out now* Massimo Ragnedda and Glenn W. Muschert, *Theorizing Digital Divides <https://www.routledge.com/Theorizing-Digital-Divides/Ragnedda-Muschert/p/bo…>*, Routledge, 2017 *Description* This volume examines and explains the phenomenon of digital divides and digital inequalities from a theoretical perspective. Indeed, with there being a limited amount of theoretical research on the digital divide so far, Theorizing Digital Divides seeks to collect and analyse different perspectives and theoretical approaches in analysing digital inequalities, and thus propose a nuanced approach to study the digital divide. Exploring theories from diverse perspectives within the social sciences whilst presenting clear examples of how each theory is applied in digital divide research, this book will appeal to scholars and undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in sociology of inequality, digital culture, Internet studies, mass communication, social theory, sociology, and media studies. *Table of Contents* *Introduction: Massimo Ragnedda and Glenn W. Muschert* *Section 1: Using classical social theories to understand digital divide* Chapter 1. Glenn W. Muschert and Ryan Gunderson, *The Sociology of Simmel and Digital Divides: Information, Value, Exchange, and Sociation in the Networked Environment* Chapter 2: Massimo Ragnedda and Maria Laura Ruiu,* Social capital and the three levels of digital divide*. Chapter 3: Tomohisa Hirata, *Do contemporary media technologies and the architects of them fill the role of the psychoanalyst for the users of them?* Chapter 4: Barbara Barbosa Neves & Geoffrey Mead, *The interpretive and ideal-type approach: Rethinking digital non-use(s) in a Weberian perspective* *Section 2: Associative and communicative perspectives* Chapter 5: Gerard Goggin. *‘Disability and Digital Inequalities: Rethinking Digital Divides with Disability Theory’*. Morten Hjelholt and Jannick Schou. *The Digital Divide and Citizen Classifications* Chapter 14: Emma A. Jane, *Gendered cyberhate: a new digital divide?* *Afterword. Jan Van Dijk * *Endorsements* Prof. Steve Jones (UIC Distinguished Professor of Communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago). This book provides a much-needed wide-ranging theoretical foundation for research on the digital divide. While scholars and activists have done yeoman’s work identifying, studying and narrowing digital divides, Ragnedda and Muschert have put together the theoretical infrastructure with which we may understand past efforts and move forward with new ones. Prof. Bridgette Wessels (Newcastle University). This is a welcome volume that develops our understanding of digital divides. It does so through a highly informed understanding of current theoretical knowledge of digital divides in a range of disciplinary perspectives. The authors combine to extend this knowledge in meaningful ways to address the nuances and complexities of digital divides. The theoretical developments will be extremely beneficial for scholars and students working in the area of digital divides. Deadline extended - CFP AAG 2018, Making Smarter Environments: The Environmental Politics and Practices of Smart Cities
by ryan burns 04 Oct '17

04 Oct '17

Hello all, Please find below our CFP for the 2018 American Association of Geographers Meeting in New Orleans below. Best, Ryan --- Within smart cities debates, the dominant discourse suggests that smart technologies will improve sustainability, efficiency, and environmental control, yet much of these claims have been taken for granted, furthering post-political urban environmentalism. We see this as an opportunity for critical geographers and political ecologists to investigate the politics of urban environmentalism at the nexus of big data, smart technologies, and data-driven governance. Recent work has brought attention to these issues. For example, Gabrys (2014) identifies the ways in which smart cities enroll environments - surroundings, natural processes, and technological milieu - to shape the range of possible ways of being in the city. Likewise, Luque-Ayala and Marvin’s (2016) work on urban atmospheric control and “nowcasting” shows how computational power extends a logic of control onto natural processes, such as storm surges and flooding in the city. Recent work on “environmental big data” has also pushed forward concerns about the practices, devices, and subjects involved with environmental monitoring, raising new questions about epistemologies and ontologies of nature in the city as well as the politics of socio-environmental control (Gabrys 2016; Lippert 2016; Garnett 2016; Fortun et al 2016). Critical questions are still to be answered, however, as smart cities and IoT agendas proliferate. They include questions of the decision-making practices around the geographic-ecological placements of data centers, the implications of sensors for real-time monitoring of air and water pollution, and the nature of the performativity and social construction of open data categories such as "environmental" data. To this end, we are soliciting abstracts for a series of organized sessions to be held at the annual meeting of the American Association of Geographers, to be held April 10-14 in New Orleans, LA. We would be particularly interested in work addressing the following topics, although we are in no way limiting our solicitation to this list: - How do smart cities and/or urban data mobilize particular conceptions of “the environment”, and what are the implications of this process? - What are the politics and environmental considerations/limitations around the locations of data centers or other data infrastructures? - What sorts of more-than-human assemblages are enrolled to understand, manage, and respond to smart cities’ environmental implications? - What roles do smart infrastructures play in the production, management, representation, extraction of value, and economies of “natures”? - How does “environmental stewardship” and “corporate responsibility” play into discourses of smart cities’ environmental implications? - How are particular publics “called into being” by smart infrastructures in response to socio-environmental concerns? - How are environmental justice movements mobilizing smart technologies or environmental data to fight injustices? Fortun, K., Poirier, L., Morgan, A., Costelloe-Kuehn, B., & Fortun, M. (2016). Pushback: Critical data designers and pollution politics. Big Data & Society, 3(2), 2053951716668903. Gabrys, J. (2014). Programming environments: environmentality and citizen sensing in the smart city. Environment and Planning D: Society and Space, 32(1), 30-48. Gabrys, J., Pritchard, H., & Barratt, B. (2016). Just good enough data: Figuring data citizenships through air pollution sensing and data stories. Big Data & Society, 3(2), 2053951716679677. Garnett, E. (2016). Developing a feeling for error: Practices of monitoring and modelling air pollution data. Big Data & Society, 3(2), 2053951716658061. Lippert, I. (2016). Failing the market, failing deliberative democracy: How scaling up corporate carbon reporting proliferates information asymmetries. Big Data & Society, 3(2), 2053951716673390. Luque-Ayala, A. & Marvin S. (2016). Urban Atmospheric Control: Nowcasting and the Modulation of Infrastructure. Presentation at 2016 AAG. Participants should send abstracts to both Anthony Levenda ( anthony.levenda(a)ucalgary.ca) and Ryan Burns (ryan.burns1(a)ucalgary.ca) by October 17th. -- Ryan Burns, PhD Dept of Geography University of Calgary http://burnsr77.github.io

CFP: AAG 2018 Popular Geopolitics across multiple mediums Session organizers: Katrinka Somdahl-Sands & Darren Purcell Popular geopolitics is a subfield of geopolitics, which studies how cultural products intervene in the pre-existing geopolitical practices. Most of the popular geopolitics literature has focused on the scale of the state and how popular culture influences ideas of nationalism. Papers of that kind are welcome to submit for inclusion, however in this panel we are also looking for papers that look at different scales, multiple media forms, and those that push past the Anglo-American centric analyses that have dominated the subdiscipline.
