Since the 1920s, he argued, new technological ‘gadgets’ that improved domestic efficiency, new options in private transport to take people to and from their homes, and new media, such as the radio, which brought news and entertainment into the home have fostered an ‘at-once mobile and home-centred way of living’. Throughout the late twentieth century, family television consumption practices and the domestication of new media technologies were regular topics for media, communication and cultural studies. In the early 21st century, the rise of smartphones and the turn to mobile media led to a focus on the convergence of intimate forms of communication with the presence of digital media in more public spaces, such as the city and the street. There is a resurgence of interest in the home in digital media research, and for good reason: the digitally mediated home is the site of household politics including intergenerational conflict and anxiety; it is a key factor in the economics of digital inclusion; and it is at the centre of a significant intensification of digital media technologies in everyday life. Taking the concept of ‘home’ less literally, domestication–the process of bringing new technologies home, making sense of them, and finding new uses for them–is a key part of the innovation and embedding process; it is also how new the cultural logics of new technologies become normalised and entangled with our work, our leisure, our intimate relationships, and our daily routines. Mobile technologies create complex flows of social relationships, personal and public communication, across the boundaries of work and home, private and public space. At the same time, the particularities of material spaces within homes offer diverse geographies of media production, consumption, and entrepreneurship: teenage bedrooms, kitchens and garages are the sites of cultural innovation, from new forms of storytelling to games and software development. And intertwined with the metaphors of comfort and enclosure, are less pleasant realities – homes are not always safe; and digital media can be implicated in household conflict and domestic violence. This symposium will feature a range of national and international scholarship on the changing relationships between digital media technologies and the home – as space, as place, and as a troubled metaphor for belonging. Possible Themes * Smart homes and digital living: assistive technologies; the internet of things (aka the internet of shit<https://twitter.com/internetofshit?lang=en>); AIs and automation; pet wearables; contemporary and retro-futuristic representations of the digitally enabled home; new frontiers for direct marketing (e.g. Unruly and News Corp’s The Home<http://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/campaign-tv-unruly-launches-2000-sq-f…>) * Digital inclusion: digital technologies in the household economy; digital ability, agency and control in the household; digital media use in rural and remote homes. * Place, space and mobilities: the domestic and mobile geographies of media use and production; the mediatization of family spaces; digital media as a tool for regulating and governing household space and time * Media consumption, production and audience practices: kids and the ‘screen time’ debate; connected and multi-screen family viewing; work-life balance; the internet of toys; ‘let’s play’ and unboxing videos; vernacular creativity and mundane media. * Learning at home through digital media: early literacies and digital media; learning technologies; the home as a node in connected learning ecologies; social media entertainment, digital games and learning; maker culture Please submit paper proposals to Michael Dezuanni <m.dezuanni(a)qut.edu.au<mailto:m.dezuanni@qut.edu.au>> by 30 June 2017. Proposals should include an abstract of 250–400 words along with a brief bio of no more than 100 words. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by 10 July 2017. Draft papers (3000–4000 words) of accepted presentations are to be submitted by 13 October 2017 for sharing and discussion among symposium participants. Please note that there will be no registration fees for this event, and daytime catering will be provided; however participants will be responsible for funding and arranging travel and accommodation if required. *Emerald Studies in Media and Communications is delighted to announce two new calls with a due date of January 15, 2018:Theorizing the Digital: Social Theory and Power, Media, and Everyday Life: Expanding the Intersectional. Call for Theorizing the Digital: Social Theory and Digital Culture* We welcome submissions using a wide variety of data and analytic techniques, assuming they are rigorously employed. We also welcome theoretical submissions, assuming they focus squarely on the topic of the volume. Methodological papers will be considered as long as they are grounded in theoretical concerns. The scope of the volume is wide and includes application of classical and contemporary theorists in media contexts. Any topic that engages the volume’s theme is welcome. Potential topics could include: ethics, practices, and politics of “big data”; self, identity, and community; privacy, publicity and surveillance; personal and algorithmic patterns of curation; social network formation, maintenance, and change; news and (dis)information; visual representations; memes and virality; politics; mediated embodiment, etc. *Call for Power, Media, and Everyday Life: Expanding the Intersectional* We welcome submissions using a wide variety of data and analytic techniques, assuming they are rigorously employed, and theoretical or methodological submissions, assuming they focus squarely on the topic of the volume. The scope of this volume is wide, as it aims to contribute phenomenological and epistemic knowledge to the growing field of intersectionality. Submissions are welcome on any topics that speak to intersectionality as it relates to media including gender, race/ethnicity, class, sexuality, and ability. Since 2006 the PhD seminars have focused on various aspects of e-voting including technical aspects, legal challenges, identity management, verifiability of the vote, etc. The workshops took place in various locations in Austria, Catalonia, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. The goal of the colloquium is to foster understanding and collaboration between PhD students from various disciplines working on e-voting. To this end, the program allows plenty of space for discussion and initiating collaboration based on presentations by attendees. What makes this colloquium special is that it is truly interdisciplinary, where PhD students from legal backgrounds are joined by PhD students with computer science and cryptography backgrounds and by social scientists. Master students in e-voting and related areas are also welcome to participate. Each interested participant should submit his/her research proposal (or alternatively ideas for papers, open problems, or other issues where feedback from colleagues would be helpful etc.) of some two pages length using the conference platform. In addition to this proposal, participants are asked to fill out a questionnaire about their PhD project. This questionnaire will be send by email to participants who have submitted their proposal. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Award is presented annually by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research (www.cccsir.com) and recognizes excellent student-authored papers. Julien's paper, "The Information-Technological Media of Imgur, Reddit and Twitter," uses Couch’s foundational work on information technologies to evaluate some sociological research since the time of his writing, and to argue that each unique website studied constitutes a distinct information-technological medium. Julien holds a BA in Religious Studies from Grove City College in Pennsylvania, and recently completed his MA in Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The Couch Award was established by the Couch Center in 2002 as the centerpiece of an extensive awards program. Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines, and winners are selected by a committee of university professors. The winner receives a cash award as well as the opportunity to present the paper at the international conference of the Association of Internet Researchers in October. The Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research is a non-profit organization established to promote the scholarship of the late Carl J. Couch and his academic associates. Online social networks and social media sites enable numerous users to collaboratively create online information by producing new content and by establishing new links between people, information, and services. At the same time, these user leave digital traces on the Web, which provide unparalleled research opportunities for studying questions in sociology, psychology, behavioral science, or political and economic science. While the study of human digital traces has attracted attention from different communities, understanding human social behavior via non-invasive methods remains a challenging task and an open problem. Tackling this challenge requires new methods, instruments and techniques as well as an interdisciplinary effort from researchers across disciplines such as computer science, humanities, social sciences and others. This workshop seeks original submissions on either methods or practices at the crossroads of these various disciplines. We invite submissions that may include the following topics, but are not limited to: ** Studies of online communities ** Communities of practice, online participation ** Graph partitioning and community discovery ** Link prediction ** Location-aware social networks and mobility ** Expertise and trust in online social networks ** Crowdsourcing and social media ** Information diffusion in social networks ** Social influence ** Opinion formation in social networks ** Social bots and their role in shaping of public opinion ** Studies of human culture based on online social networks and encyclopedia, computational methods to assess human culture along different dimensions (such as language, food, music, literature etc.) ** Using social media to study psychological and social phenomena, and corresponding methods to assess such phenomena via web-based investigations ** Biases in social media, such as population biases, channel bias, self-selection bias, etc and computational methods for assessment and correction ** The study of limitations of tools used in digital humanities, extension of traditional source criticism into the development of systematic "tool criticism" ** Social and individual inequalities on the web, e.g. gender or race disparities, computational methods and instruments to assess and track inequalities ** Studies of political processes and dynamics on the web, such as elections, political unrest, grassroots movements ** Predictions with social media, e.g. stock markets, spread of language, culture, memes or diseases ** Longitudinal studies of social phenomena and social change on the web ** Computational methods to assess and improve social and/or individual well-being via the web ** Studies investigating the role and causal impact of algorithms in facilitating social interactions on the web Submissions: ============ Submissions: We solicit research papers (max. 8 pages) in the ACM conference paper style. Acceptance of the papers will be either as full (regular) or short/demo papers with the corresponding presentation slots. Papers accepted as full will be published in the ACM Digital Library and papers accepted as short/demo will be published in special online workshop proceedings.
