CFP: All Things in Moderation: The People, Practices and Politics of Online Content Review – Human and Machine Dec 6-7 2017, UCLA
by Sarah T. Roberts 31 Jul '17

31 Jul '17

Greetings, AoIR - It’s my great pleasure to announce the following event and related CFP. On December 6-7 2017, UCLA’s Department of Information Studies, part of the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, welcomes participants to a two-day conference on commercial content moderation (CCM) of user-generated social media material. At All Things in Moderation: The People, Practices and Politics of Online Content Review – Human and Machine we will offer a new forum bringing together those interested in the multiple challenges related to CCM, and to content moderation of all kinds. The goal of this foundational event is to map the current landscape from a number of perspectives. During these two days, scholars, students, journalists, policy makers and CCM workers will share their insights in order to generate a discussion about the challenges, methodologies and frameworks that are necessary to integrate a comprehensive, academic study of commercial content moderation, other kinds of online moderation, and its outcomes and implications into existing paradigms in labor studies, information studies, computing and internet history, public policy, internet governance and media studies, to name but a few. Beyond analyzing the contemporary case of CCM across the social media and other digital industries, we anticipate that All Things in Moderation will require a look to the past and to other media sectors, as well as a gaze into the future, to anticipate the problems related to CCM and to our social media-reliant world, and to collectively think about solutions. We anticipate a fruitful gathering. Please join us on the beautiful UCLA campus this December. The conference is _free_ for participants, but space is limited. Please register early (https://atm-ucla2017.net/registration/) and visit the call for participation (https://atm-ucla2017.net/about/) to submit your proposals for papers, sessions and other interventions. We look forward to hosting you at UCLA! Sarah T. Roberts, Ph.D., Conference Convener Patricia Ciccone, Conference Coordinator --- S a r a h T. R o b e r t s, P h. D. Sort the Shelves - A UCL Research Study
by Shekhar, Sid 31 Jul '17

31 Jul '17

Hello All, My name is Sid Shekhar and I am a student researcher at the Department of Information Studies at University College London (UCL) where a staff member and I are studying the difference between people's preferences between books that they have read and book covers of books that they haven't read to develop a new system for recommending books to new readers. Whether you have highly refined book tastes or simply have 5 minutes to spare - here is a fun little web application where you can 'sort the shelves' and reorder the books to reflect your preferences: www.sidshekhar.com/bookshelf<http://www.sidshekhar.com/bookshelf> You taking a few minutes out of your day to visit the link above and complete the 4 short tasks on the website would be a huge help to our research as we are trying to gather book preference data from as many people as possible. We would love to hear any feedback you have as well. All data collected will be kept anonymised and private. Thanks so much in advance for taking the time! Sid Shekhar

Final CFP: Cultures of Capitalism 6-8 december, Wellington NZ
by Taffel, Sy 30 Jul '17

30 Jul '17

Just a quick reminder that the CFP for this conference closes on 1st August... Cultures of Capitalism Cultural Studies Association of Australasia Conference 2017 December 6-8 Massey University, Wellington Campus, Aotearoa New Zealand Keynote Speakers: Professor Patricia Hill Collins (University of Maryland), Professor Jodi Dean (Hobart and William Smith Colleges), Professor Jeremy Gilbert (University of East London), Professor Wendy Larner (University of Victoria, Wellington). The relationship between capital and culture is hotly contested. On the one hand, dominant political discourses valorise "culture" as the solution for ailing communities, cities and industries. Discourses of neo-liberal globalization claim that, in the face of mass migration, war and climate change, communities equipped with the "right" culture will adapt and endure, while others will be left behind; discourses of urban planning celebrate culture as the key to revitalising municipal economies through creativity and social participation; and discourses of post-industrial work, parsing radical shifts in the manufacturing sector, champion cultural, intellectual and creative labour as the paradigm for new forms of work. On the other, a range of critical voices, many of them associated with Cultural Studies, offer a decidedly less rosy vision of the relationship between culture and emergent capitalist formations. For these critics, nascent technologies of capital have led to a renewed reification and exploitation of racialised, sexualised, and classed populations, even as newly precarious conditions of labour give rise to affective economies marked by depression, antagonism and the "crisis ordinary." The 2017 Cultural Studies Association of Australasia conference will focus on the work that cultures do in constructing, contesting, and constituting new capital formations. While the "culture industry" critique cast culture as the opiate through which economic dominance is propagated, cultures can potentially mediate economic conditions in multiple and heterogeneous ways. This conference invites contributions that explore these mediations. In doing so, we return to one of the key concerns of early cultural studies: to make sense of the mutually-determining relation between culture and its capitalist context. If, following Stuart Hall, we understand 'culture' as the production of meaning through language and representation, what are the modes of communication through which capitalism/s are created? How are capitalism/s materialised in different spaces? How is it embodied in different identities and communities? What is the role of the economy in shaping the possibilities for culture? What is the role of Cultural Studies as critical praxis in the present economic time? Papers are invited to address, but are not limited to, the following themes: * The cultural politics of neoliberalism * Precarious and/or immaterial labour * Digital capitalism * Capitalist affects * Trump, Brexit and the resurgence of capitalist nationalisms * Capitalism, culture and technology * The cultural and creative industries * Capitalism, culture and sustainability * Cultures of surveillance and war * Cultural identity and globalisation * Cultural resistance and activism * Productive and unproductive cultures * Base, superstructure and mediation * Formal and real subsumption of culture * Representations of capitalism, class and markets * Political economies of online, digital and social media * Anticapitalist, Socialist, Anarchist and Communist cultures * Racial capitalism * Critical theory, Cultural Marxism and Cultural Studies The conference also accepts papers that fall within the general disciplinary area of Cultural Studies. We are also happy to accept submissions for pre-formed panels: if you wish to submit as part of a pre-formed panel, please indicate this in your submission. In addition, to the regular conference events, we will also be holding a pre-fix day for postgraduate students and early career researchers. Early bird registration costs for the event will be $350 NZD for faculty and fully waged participants, and $250 NZD for students, adjunct faculty and unwaged participants. Registration will include membership of the CSAA. If you are interested in presenting at the conference, please send a 250 word abstract with your name, e-mail address and affiliation to csaa2017(a)massey.ac.nz<mailto:csaa2017@massey.ac.nz> by August 1 2017. Special Issue on E-Politics of Immersion - Immersive Storytelling in Digital Ecosystems

Abstract Announcement for International Journal of E-Politics (IJEP) 8(3) International Journal of E-Politics (IJEP) Volume 8, Issue 3, July - September 2017 GUEST EDITORIAL PREFACE Special Issue on E-Politics of Immersion - Immersive Storytelling in Digital Ecosystems: ‘Down the Rabbit Hole' Christian Stiegler (Brunel University London, United Kingdom) To obtain a copy of the Guest Editorial Preface, click on the link below. www.igi-global.com/pdf.aspx?tid=186959&ptid=158509&ctid=15&t=Special Issue on E-Politics of Immersion - Immersive Storytelling in Digital Ecosystems: ‘Down the Rabbit Hole'<http://www.igi-global.com/pdf.aspx?tid=186959&ptid=158509&ctid=15&t=Special…> ARTICLE 1 The Politics of Immersive Storytelling: Virtual Reality and the Logics of Digital Ecosystems Christian Stiegler (Brunel University London, United Kingdom) This article applies and extends the concept of social media logic to assess the politics of immersive storytelling on digital platforms. Digital platforms such as Facebook are offering all-surrounding mediated environments to communicate in Virtual Reality (‘Facebook Spaces') as well as immersive narratives such as Mr. Robot VR. This article provides an understanding of the politics of immersive storytelling and of its underlying principles of programmability, user experience, popularity, and platform sociality, which define immersive technologies in the 21st century. Wiggins (Webster Vienna Private University, Austria) In direct response to the rise in fake news as a socio-cultural and political phenomenon, this article presents an analysis of the factors that may help to explain the reception of fake news. In addition, recent pronouncements made by the Trump White House seem to challenge the nature of an objective truth. An immersive narratology emphasizes that different universes of discourse can intermingle and overlap, with fact and fiction becoming difficult to distinguish in our increasingly mediated lives. A tenable definition of fake news is offered prior to exploring historical antecedents of fake news. Persuasion, construction, immersion, distribution, and polarization represent the core factors that demystify the reception of fake news regardless as to whether an individual believes a story. A concluding discussion offers a critical evaluation of the potential of fake news to augment the news media landscape in the coming years. Blast Theory's A Machine to See With (2010) is a pervasive fictional experience that enables users, through the technology of their mobile phone, to become immersed within a fictional crime scenario across a real geographical setting. Dennis Del Favero's art project, Scenario (2011), by contrast, is an interactive and immersive story that takes place in a 360-degree digital cinematic space called an AVIE (Advanced Visualization and Interaction Environment). This immersive world is a mixed reality environment, a meeting place where five real users and ten digital screen characters converge and interact through the technology of motion sensing. Participants are virtually wired into the immersive world through the performance of their movement. This paper will explore both of these artworks through original interviews the author has conducted with each of the artists. This article investigates some of these assumptions, via an analysis of an undertheorised aspect of VR that has emerged in recent years – the 360° film. It argues that 360° film represents a much more important aspect of VR than has been previously recognised. In so doing, the article establishes this medium as an important field of study, and argues that ultimately, it will be the commercial infrastructure for this content which will define the parameters of immersive storytelling.
