Conference Themes The overarching conference theme is 'mLearning and Design for Social Change and Innovation'. Higher education institutions are called upon to provide for the competencies and skills that foster design for social change and innovation. In addition, knowledge and skills alliances are encouraged by funding bodies to cultivate, share and disseminate competencies that foster social entrepreneurship and innovation. However, little is known on how mlearning can facilitate this process, how it can contribute towards social change, innovation and entrepreneurship. The Program Committee may require an accepted paper to be adapted into a short paper or poster. All papers must be prepared according to the ACM SIG Proceedings Template format (see the conference web site for further information). The papers must be original contributions not submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere. A submitted contribution should clearly indicate the conference topics it targets. Since 2006 the PhD seminars have focused on various aspects of e-voting including technical aspects, legal challenges, identity management, verifiability of the vote, etc. The workshops took place in various locations in Austria, Catalonia, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. The goal of the colloquium is to foster understanding and collaboration between PhD students from various disciplines working on e-voting. To this end, the program allows plenty of space for discussion and initiating collaboration based on presentations by attendees. What makes this colloquium special is that it is truly interdisciplinary, where PhD students from legal backgrounds are joined by PhD students with computer science and cryptography backgrounds and by social scientists. Master students in e-voting and related areas are also welcome to participate. Each interested participant should submit his/her research proposal (or alternatively ideas for papers, open problems, or other issues where feedback from colleagues would be helpful etc.) of some two pages length using the conference platform. In addition to this proposal, participants are asked to fill out a questionnaire about their PhD project. This questionnaire will be send by email to participants who have submitted their proposal. In 2016 the two previously bi-annually held conferences, EVOTE and VoteID, were merged into the annual E-VOTE-ID conference. The second joint conference will take place in October 2017. Social Media and Chinese Digital Diaspora in Australia: Local Findings with Global Implications Call for papers for special issue of Media International Australia (MIA) Edited by Haiqing Yu (UNSW) and Wanning Sun (UTS) This special issue aims to bring together original research papers from a diversified range of disciplines in arts, humanities, and social sciences to examine the role of digital and social media platforms and practices in forging news forms of civic engagement among the highly diversified and stratified Chinese diaspora in Australia. It asks for critical engagement with two key concepts: digital Chinese diaspora and digital citizenship—both highly contested and evolving concepts. Key issues to be discussed include but are not limited to: o What are the emergent digital and mobile communication practices among Chinese diaspora and how do they impact on their (socioeconomic, cultural and political) life in Australia as multicultural citizens? o To what extent do these digital practices create new forms of civic engagement and enable Chinese migrant communities to participate in public life in Australia? o What are political, social and economic impacts of flexible sense-and-meaning-making practices among the Chinese diaspora on their understanding and exercising of ‘citizenship’ in Australia? Existing scholarship on Chinese diaspora and diasporic media has focused on how the Chinese diaspora use various media and communication platforms and networks to maintain connections to the “Motherland” and to reconstitute the home abroad. Recent work has traced new developments in diasporic Chinese media, has updated the current landscape of diasporic Chinese media and communication (particularly with the proliferation of digital platforms and new modes of communication), and has documented the impact of China’s soft power initiatives and “going global” policy. This work has also pointed to a new, and seemingly intractable, tension: the emergence of stronger links between new migrants in the diaspora and China on the one hand, and a continuous desire for a global, postmodern and hybrid Chinese diasporic identity, on the other hand. This tension is played out in relation to media production, circulation, and consumption, and it manifests itself mostly acutely through individual digital media practices. The growing importance of social media among the Chinese diaspora calls for detailed and systematic inquiry into the implications of this development for Australia’s multicultural policy, social cohesion and effective engagement with China. This special issue welcomes critical case analyses of the role of digital and social media in the lives of Chinese digital diaspora in Australia. It encourages a focus on the relation between Chinese diaspora’s engagement with social media (both Chinese and international) and their participation in Australian public life. It is hoped that this special issue will update scholarship on Chinese diaspora and diasporic media in the era of digital/social media and contribute to the theorization of flexible and digital citizenship. 1st of November 2017, University of Helsinki, Finland Feeling data: emotion and affect in datafied worlds - workshop Scholars working in the interdisciplinary field of ‘critical data studies’ have begun to address the effects of ‘datafication’ - understood as the conversion of qualitative aspects of life into quantified data – on the economy, public life, and self-understanding. The workshop focuses on the emotional properties and affective forces of datafication with the intent of exploring how these perspectives could operate as a fruitful starting point for thinking about future societal trajectories in terms of datafied power, domination, and agency. The goal is to bring together scholars working with questions of the emotional and the affective with the intent of demonstrating how the two research streams could strengthen each other. With a focus on emotional dimensions of datafication, addressing emotional engineering, emotion tracking, and everyday engagements with data, the goal is to explore the communication of the emotional, but also the various kinds of agencies, both human and non-human, that the focus on the emotional can uncover. The exploration of the affective exposes atmospheres, temporalities, energies and rhythms involved in datafication and living with data. Together these research streams point towards the central role that forces such as the non-human, non-quantified, non-linear and non-cognitive play in datafication, raising questions about inequality, discrimination and data in/justice and how to overcome them.
