Perhaps of interest Gianluca Miscione University College Dublin <http://www.ucd.ie/mis/members/gianlucamiscione/> http://www.ucd.ie/mis/members/gianlucamiscione/ On Monday, 21 August 2017 11:08:13 UTC+1, David Seibt wrote: Dear list, please find attached a call for papers for our edited volume “Digitalized Industries: Between Domination and Emancipation”. The book critically explores the contingent political effects of the current wave of digitalization in industries and raises the question of their potential for social emancipation. It brings together different perspectives on the debate along four of its most prevalent topics: organization, work, design and the body. We welcome empirical, historical, as well as theoretical analysis that situates industrial production in a larger social context. The deadline for the abstracts is 10th of September 2017, maximum length is 500 words. Best wishes, David Seibt

ASIST workshop on 'Conducting successful research'
by Caroline Haythornthwaite 20 Aug '17

20 Aug '17

FYI. A workshop at the Association for Information Science and Technology annual conference, Washington, DC Crystal City Hyatt (Oct. 27-Nov. 1, 2017). Conducting successful research: From problem identification to research and from outcome to translation in the field of information October 27, 2017 Time: 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm Samuel K. W. Chu The University of Hong Kong Javed Mostafa The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Caroline Haythornthwaite Syracuse University Hong Huang University of South Florida https://www.asist.org/am17/sessions/conducting-successful-research-from-pro… Abstract for "Conducting Successful Research: From Problem Identification to Research and From Outcome to Translation in the Field of Information": To survive and thrive as a researcher or professorial staff, we need to be productive in our research, and able to publish in high quality conference proceedings and key academic journals. Universities worldwide are now emphasizing on the societal impact of academic research. In order to be successful, productive and influential in their research, it is usually necessary for researchers to know how to propose important research questions, be creative and innovative in seeking research grants, carry out research strategically, write up research results rigorously, and translate research outcomes into a real-world solution. Presenters in this workshop will serve as volunteers in sharing their secrets of success in becoming productive, innovative and/or effective researchers. Apart from learning the theories and ideas on achieving these various outstanding traits of success in research, participants of this workshop will learn how they may upgrade their conference papers into journal articles (e.g., from an ASIS&T paper into a JASIST article). Participants will also have a chance to join a mentorship scheme through this workshop. Through this mentorship scheme, experienced researchers who have published in JASIST (or other top journals) will work with one or more participants to upgrade their conference papers into highly-ranked journals (For details, see https://goo.gl/X9yQNB)

Quantified Workers in Precarity conference and two book launches.

Like earlier forms of capitalism which taught workers to act like machines, the current wave of digitalised work, which includes tracking technologies, automation and surveillance, means that we work with and alongside machines and have even started to think like computers and to compete against them. Machines largely self-manage, do not complain, do not call in sick and do not make mistakes, but humans do all of these things. Quantification, datafication and platformisation of work via new technologies introduce unprecedented possibilities for stress and a range of symptoms emerging from psychosocial violence (also tracked). The precarity of the modern worker is central to understanding the quantified self at work. Precarity is the purest form of alienation where the worker loses all personal association with the labour she performs. She is dispossessed and location-less in her working life and all value is extracted from her in every aspect of life. Because precarious workers are constantly chasing the next ‘gig’, spatial and temporal consistency in life is largely out of reach. Capital encourages universal communication and machinic devices appear to facilitate this communication within precarious conditions: but only in quantified terms. Thus, anything that cannot be quantified and profiled is rendered incommunicable – meaning it is marked and marginalized, disqualified as human capital, denied privilege, and precarious (Moore and Robinson 2015). Workers are compelled to squeeze every drop of labour-power from our bodies, including work that is seen, or work that has always been measured in Taylorist regimes; and increasingly, work that is unseen, such as attitudes, sentiments, affective and emotional labour. What are the impacts of technological change and precarity on workers? What are we doing about it? Some Project Findings. *Measuring and Tracking Affective and Emotional Labour.* For Moore’s *Work, Agility and the Quantified Self* funded project, working alongside a company in the Netherlands, Dr Moore interviewed; and the project team including Dr Lukasz Piwek carried out surveys; with 30 workers who were given FitBits, RescueTime and daily lifelogging emails where results were aggregated on personalised and shared dashboards, over the course on one year, during a period of corporate merger. The company sought to improve employees’ health and productivity, a project that the company called The Quantified Workplace. Moore did not set up the project, nor consult on it, but worked as lead social scientist alongisde the project. Her findings demonstrate that workers began to take note of affective and emotional labour in ways they had not previously done. While findings showed increased self-awareness and subjective productivity toward the beginning of the project, these tendencies decreased by the end of the project. Findings show an increased sense of autonomy, desire for coaching and support. Interestingly, workers’ sensitivity to privacy increased (email Moore for further information). For the BA/Leverhulme funded project, Dr Moore also carried out field work in car factories and technology centres. Her next project will look at the risks of psycho-social violence and harassment in digitalised working environments. *Note: On 29th August, Claudia Hammond will be speaking about the Quantified Workplace project and interviewed Dr Moore about this project for the documentary ‘Every Step We Take’, on Radio 4 at 9 pm.* *Keynote Speakers* *Dr Phoebe Moore <https://phoebevmoore.wordpress.com/about/> ‘The Quantified Self at Work, in Precarity’* *Prof Rosalind Gill <https://www.city.ac.uk/people/academics/rosalind-gill> ‘The Quantified Selves of Academia’* *Prof Martin Upchurch <http://www.mdx.ac.uk/about-us/our-people/staff-directory/profile/upchurch-m…> ‘Is a Robot after your Job?’* *Plenary Panels and Book Launch Roundtable* Dr Ruth Cain <https://www.kent.ac.uk/law/people/academic/Cain,_Ruth.html> Mental Health: the ‘recovery imperative’ and the new welfare-to-work Dr John Danaher <http://www.nuigalway.ie/business-public-policy-law/school-of-law/staff/john…> Freedom and Domination in Quantified Work Dr Kylie Jarrett <https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/media-studies/our-people/kylie-jarrett> Valuing ’Er Indoors: Quantification, domestic work and digital labour Dr Stevphen Shukaitis <https://www1.essex.ac.uk/ebs/staff/profile.aspx?ID=2745> Knows No Weekend: Class Composition & the Psychological Contract of Cultural Work in Precarious Times Dr Christopher Till <http://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/staff/dr-christopher-till/> Precarious work and the energy crisis in semiocapitalism *Prof Sian Moore? I've just written about the doxing of the Charlottesville marchers
by David Brake 18 Aug '17

18 Aug '17

Dear all, Inspired by recent events, I have put out a scholarly-ish blog post here http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/mediapolicyproject/2017/08/18/the-dangers-of-doxing-… <http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/mediapolicyproject/2017/08/18/the-dangers-of-doxing-…> giving three reasons why doxing is toxic (yes, even doxing folks who look like nazis) and suggesting how policy-makers might tackle it. I hope you find it interesting and maybe useful for teaching in the upcoming year. New book: Discourses of Social Media. Public, Political and Media Issues.
by Philippa Smith 17 Aug '17

17 Aug '17

(Apologies for cross-posting) · For those AOIRs who have inquired about/are interested in the ways in which digital communication and social media affect political and journalistic practice, and vice versa, please see this book just released last week. My colleague Helen Sissons and I have a chapter included that looks at the comments section of news websites as interactive spaces. BURGER Marcel, Joanna THORNBORROW & Richard FITZGERALD (eds.) (2017), Discours des réseaux sociaux. Enjeux publics, politiques et médiatiques. Discourses of Social Media. Public, Political and Media Issues. Bruxelles: DeBoeck. Available here: http://www.deboecksuperieur.com/ouvrage/9782807306028-discours-des-reseaux-…. There are chapters in both English and French. Below are excerpts about the book from the editors: "Using a range of theories and approaches from sociolinguistics, interaction analysis, conversation and discourse analysis, and multimodal semiotic analysis, all the contributors to the book analyze the relationship between interactive environments and social interactions. In particular, they explore how social media users represent and construct space and place as object and context, and they address questions that include: What kinds of places and spaces are being constructed through digital communication and for what purposes? How are these relations between virtual, digital and real, concrete environments being managed in locally situated interactions? With what kind of linguistic markers and resources, and according to what stakes?... The chapters in this book combine both practical considerations, as for instance, in their observations of platform users' discursive actions, as well as addressing ethical and anthropological issues, as for instance in their analysis of the consequences of those actions in both 'virtual' and 'real' environments. " · Also, for a closer look at how news organisations cope with digital technology issues, please see this article we have also published: Smith, P. and Sissons. H. (2016). Social media and a case of mistaken identity: A newspaper's response to journalistic error.
